Welcome to The Eleven(th) year of the Dave's Picks series! The momentum of the series keeps moving forward, and we can truly say there is no end in sight to the series. As we've said before, as long as you keep digging and supporting the series, we'll keep putting them out. Which is to say a huge thank you for keeping the series going! We do what we do because of you, and you keep inspiring us to do our best. And above all, you make it fun! As odd and challenging a year 2021 was, we were able to release five (!) incredible Grateful Dead shows in 2021 through the Dave's Picks series, starting with the magnificent Vol. 37 from 4/15/78, to Nassau on 9/8/73, the Spectrum on 4/26/83, and most recently 7/18/90 AND 7/19/90. Plus a healthy amount of bonus material where it would fit and where appropriate. Oh, and the subscribers' Bonus Disc from 9/7/73 that came with Vol. 38. As great as the four from 2021 were, we're already feeling 2022 will outdo it, and we've only selected Vol. 41 and Vol. 42 so far, as well as a lot of progress toward Vol. 43. But that's all for another time. For now, please know how much your enthusiasm means to us. We get as excited as you do every time a Dave's Picks is released. So thanks for coming along for the ride, and sharing the journey with us. We have a wonderful year of Grateful Dead archival releases ahead, and we can't wait to share it all with you.

Is there anything better than the Dead automatically showing up at your door four times a year? We think not. We're holding steady with a numbered, limited-edition of 25,000 for each of the four Dave's Picks 2022 releases. But make no mistake, the best bet is to subscribe, sit back, and relax because you never know how fast each title will go when we put them up for sale, and there have been plenty of times where we're done in a day.

If you're new here, in addition to the four releases in 2022, totaling 12 CDs, you’ll also get the subscription exclusive bonus disc, which remains one of the most highly sought-after collectables we release, and free domestic shipping. Subscriber bonus discs are not released outside of this offer. Early bird subscribers can nab a sub at $99.98 (regular pricing will be $115.92).

Thanks for the feedback on the 72 show, gents. Yes, the 72 Wichita show, Dave's #11 smokes!
I do like the 81 show Cousins, but yeah, the audience patch at the end of the show is a bummer, but overall I still like it.
Cousins, December 80 Oakland shows, that was me and I will keep the hope alive that at some point they put out a 1980 Box.

Edit: Hope you heal fast Hendrixfreak.

Maybe I should say that this was very much British humour as was...Benny Hill has been all but air brushed out comedy history in this country. You would often get beautiful women in their early 20s fawning over less beautiful men in their mid 40s on British T.V. in the 70's-presumably because the script writers were invariably men in their mid 40's.

I'd forgotten about that 1984 30 Trips show, and only noticed it in the first place because it was recommended on here. I can remember thinking it was a great show - although I can't now recall why. Looks like that's my next Dead show sorted out!

Benny Hill reruns ran late night when I was a kid.
Funny stuff for a 11-13 year old, and I probably missed half the jokes.
One I still remember was a sign that said “Jackson’s Tool Works”, and then someone spray painted on the sign “So does mine”.
Hah, still funny to this day.

It suffers mostly because Jerry is painfully low(KeithFan has an equalizer hack to fix that...) 30 Trips included a few shows that could have been standalone releases(1967, 1975, 1984), and more than a few that could not(1972, 1981 with the post-space audience patch)
Did someone mention December Oakland shows? These were very consistent and would make a great box.

The Fall 1972 show that I played recently which blew me away was Dave's Picks 11- Wichita 11/17/72. Fantastic-and with a great Playing from 11/15 on the third cd as an extra.

Funny, I can't remember who won the War of 1812, but I can remember cornball dialogue from decades ago. (Though I was too young to "get it" when "Goldfinger" first came out in, what, 1964? It was only later that I came to appreciate some of the macho puns.)

That's currently an issue here at Chey HF, so I don't laugh too loud at Sid. Frankly, it looks like he had it made. But behind the scenes (there's a pun in there somewhere), who knows?

Deadvikes, I'll have to go back to the fall '72 show in the 30 Trips box (Waterbury?) My memory of listening to that show is that it was under-whelming, considering the band's Sept-Oct hot streak. And, honestly, I've been waiting to listen to the '72 and '73 shows in Listen to the River until I had arthroscopic surgery on my ankle, which took place this past Monday. (I give both '71 shows a top rating.) So I'm supposed to stay off the foot for awhile, then into a boot for 3-4 weeks, then pursuing the usual late winter fitness for spring in the backcountry. So... short story long, it's time to crack the '72 shows sitting on my coffee table while I put my foot up. Plus, I'm still working my way through the Dylan '66 tour box!! Years after its release. So you see the "freak" in "Hendrixfreak"......

Sid James was best known for being in the "Carry On" series of films that ran from the late 1950s to the mid 1970s. Their stock in trade was saucy humour - with every double entendre they could think of being thrown in for good measure. A well endowed young woman would appear with two matching ornaments. One of the male characters would say -"Cor..she's got a lovely pair." Sid James would say "Not arf" and unleash the dirtiest laugh this side of Keith Richards, and British cinema goers would fall out of their seats laughing. Not quite the French New Wave, but a period piece for all that.

I was curious what your thoughts were on the 30 Trips 72 show?

I think they will put out some sort of an eighties box set. Of course, you never know what Dave and Co will come up with next. I know what I would like to see, Alpine Valley baby! 1980 December Oakland...... Not sure if they will ever happen.

Nice to hit more of that May 77. I think this was the last unreleased show from that tour besides the rest of Pembroke Pines and the other Fox show. 40 hasn't even hit my mailbox yet. Supposedly Friday.

Having been a subscriber since the last year of the Road Trips series, Dave has taken a lot of twists and turns through the band's career. I believe a good 60s show is long overdue. I'm sure there's still some nice recordings of "Bears Sonic Journals" lurking. Of course the seal has yet to be broken for the Hornsby and Welnick eras. The two at the top of that list for me are 4/1/91 and 4/26/91.

Also still hoping for 7/29/88, an Alpine 89 box with all of the video and audio. I could lust shows for the next 12 or 12 years.

Ordered. Best way to get these.

The vinyl versions should whet some appetites.

But personally, 77 not being a go to year, and having soooooo much 77 already, I’ll probably only dig it once or twice…
But hey, ya cant win em all!
Congrats to the 77 freaks!

Wissinoming Dead Head called this one.. and perhaps one or more other people somewhere on the Dave's Picks 40 thread. I certainly understand '77 fatigue, but it's a great show, a stunning recording and one that makes perfect sense to throw in the subscription opener slot.

Great call.. I don't recall anyone nailing one of these releases out of the blue.

Subscription - check. Onward.

Done and done! So glad to get the Dave's #1 Vinyl Mosque show as I missed Dave's Picks 1-12. What was I doing those years?!? I bought all my Dick's Picks at my local record store but when he went out of business I lost track of the series as I did not have a PC yet (yes, I'm an admitted technophobe). A friend has hooked me up with some of that but I can't wait! Got to order another CD cabinet and get all this organized. Better yet it's off to the thrift store for some more college kid decor to match what I have.
Cheers!

Edit: Still no ship notice for #40 yet for me in Colorado. What, me worry? Nope, I've got the subscription.

I think the subscription has stayed at $100 for many years, and now they're adding a fifth show and a CD to the final selection each year?! Pretty easy decision . . .

For those who grumble about whether Rhino should be allowed the keys to The Vault, consider that Dave mentions that Mark Pinkus and Rhino have been easily convinced to "give away" an extra CD each of the past two years in order to get a fifth show released. That does not seem like an action a thoughtless, faceless corporation would do. And as I mention often--go look at the music Rhino puts out; it's all small-run collectors items. You won't convince me that Rhino isn't a pretty cool company, one that is run by music lovers.

Awesome!
I never had this show on cassette or CD-R, so it’s not burned into my synapses.
The copy I have on a HD is the Bertha Remaster, and I think that I’ve heard it fewer than 5 times.
So, DaP 41 will basically be a new show for me, and it’s a Normanized Betty.

On paper it doesn't really look as though it has any qualities not already explored in the other shows already released from May 1977. And explored more effectively, come to that. But I have never heard it, so I may be wrong about that. I'm sure it will sound beautiful, whatever. Good news for 1977 completists, but I still tend to feel I already have enough from this month and year. I don't play all the shows from May 1977 I already have in one 12 month period - which suggests to me I should walk on by for this one.

I must be an idiot, but I've read that damn Dave page 6 times and can not see where 5/26/77 is the pick? My copy of LL Rain on that show is good, official will be better!!!

Update - ok found where 5/26 is mentioned. I'll be honest, almost always never listen to the Dave seaside talks. Sorry Dave, great picks, but seaside talks,,,, not my thing!

I'll venture a theory. Dave says that No. 41 has been in contention since the first Dave's Pick. So, this selection was an easy one for him, logistically, as he's got bigger fish to fry -- like the 2022 box and other projects. Note he said that some projects planned for 2022 will be pushed back to 2023. Having put out two '80s shows in a row, then a '90, his "safe" move was well-known territory: spring '77. The real mystery is where does he go from there? He's plopping a '90 US Blues encore onto a release that may or may not be related. (Hard to imagine another '90 release so soon.)

So the 2nd release of the year, with subscription bonus disc, seems a pivotal choice.

I'm sure 5-26-77 will provide a solid rock-out for me, but it clearly triggers Mr. Analytical. Yet Dave keeps us guessing. So..... of course I re-subscribed. Like going to all three nights of a GD run so as not to miss the magical moments, in case Dave favors us with more '69 -- the likeliest candidate for an "early" GD show.

Okay, just running my fat mouth. More coffee!

Dooood, I did the down-and-dirty math. In my case, $100 for annual Dave's subscription, $200 for the box. So, with tax and tip, roughly $1 per day per year. See how easily that can be rationalized? Another view is that $300 is a month's worth of groceries to stay alive. Or $300 is far less, in non-emergency veterinarian bill years, than it cost to care for my beloved 18-year-old cat. On the other hand, I didn't buy a stitch of clothing for the past year, yet I spent ~$500 on paddling gear for my packraft adventures.

Oh, the ultimate keys to my financial madness: I am not married, nor do I have children. Just ~4,000 CDs and 1,000 books (after taking hundreds to the library).

Dennis, just tape your credit card to your computer monitor to make it easier and learn not to worry......

Kinda burying the lede with the Dave's Picks Vol 1 Vinyl wasn't mentioned in my email, I didn't see it until I came back to the site today and clicked the Almanac linque. Then I saw limited to 5K and almost had palpitations until I found the linque for it and saw it was still available. Much more reasonable way to complete my collection than plunking down 500+ bucks and hoping the CDs didn't peel or anything. I've had digital copies of 1-4 since 2012-13, but not paying those insane prices for the physical copies. Vinyl will work, though I don't really want DaP 4 9-24-76, but the collector/fanatic in me wouldn't let that go by. But definitely looking forward to 5-26-77, those Sugarees at the end of that tour were monsters. The setlist looks inspired and different. And I love, love, love Jack a Roe.

And I could care less about a 1990 US Blues encore. I hope it's simply released via 30 Days of Dead.

Eta: they really need to revisit this asinine no linque policy, where one has to edit the damn word into a non-word, and perhaps reformat dates. Exceedingly frustrating.

I really thought 2021 would be my last run on the Dave’s subscription, mainly due to some really muddy customer service issues in the past, something many of us experienced, including the dreaded “No Reply” to any contact attempts. However, knock on wood (hits himself below the belt), the service was exceptional this year. It was like flying cargo on StayALoft Airlines, but being upgraded to Business Class on Cathay Pacific. Regular emails from “Dave’s Pick Priority Service” were like the stewardess coming by asking if the cabin air was lemony-fresh enough for me! A big difference. I wrote them the other day just inquiring where #40 may be, and I had 3 (!) answers in less than 24 hours, with the final one a resolution, item shipped, apologies all around, how lemony-fresh is the air now?

So kudos where kudos are due! Nice job, Rhino! No one expects “perfect”, just take care of your customers.

DaveRock - Those are insane import fees you are being charged in the UK. I’m in Canada, and they tend to be hit or miss here - sometimes there are no import/duty fees, despite size or weight, and sometimes the snowflake you ordered is being “held until settlement of funds”, because they like to be dicks.

Regardless, this has been a pretty darn good year for Dead.net, and 2022 looks great from my view.

We now return to regularly scheduled broadcasting.

I remember Rhino Records when they were a hole-in-the-wall record store in Westwood. You know Comic Book Store Guy from the Simpsons? He used to work there. They specialized in selling obscure shit like Wild Man Fischer and Ya Ho Wha 13, and would let fly streams of sarcastic remarks whenever a kid like me would wander in with his peach fuzz moustache looking for a Burritos Brothers album or whatever. I loved the place.

It was definitely run by music lovers back then. But I think at this point, it’s just another division of Warner Entertainment, Inc. They’ve done lots of interesting reissues … but also lots of awful shit that you couldn’t pay me to listen to. I realize that one man’s “awful shit” is another man’s pleasure, but let’s just say that for every much-needed reissue of a great album by the Replacements or David Crosby, they’re also reissuing Whitesnake, Rod Stewart’s 1980s dreck, Foreigner, and other stuff that I never want to hear again.

My point being: there’s no musical judgment being exercised here. Rhino is just reissuing whatever they think is going to make money. If there are people out there dying for Super Deluxe limited edition vinyl reissue of Whitesnake Unzipped, well, Rhino will put it out there. If they’re willing to allow Dave to put out an extra CD per year, it’s because they’ve noticed that what Dave puts out sells out. They’ve noticed that, for whatever reasons, the marketing for the deluxe-package limited edition DaP CDs works in a way that Road Trips somehow didn’t. And their response is, apparently, to let Dave do more or less whatever he wants … as long as they keep selling.

Anyway … more ’77 is a good thing. It sure woulda been a lot cooler if it’d been ’69, but hopefully we’ll get some during this subscription year. Wish they would release info in 42 and 43, given that they’re already chosen and all.

Your lovin give me a thrill, but your lovin don’t pay my bills.

Keep in mind Dave is the legacy manager for the Grateful Dead and he does not work for Rhino. Rhino has a 10 contract to release the Dead's music and the other "stuff" they put out.

I believe the band still has input on what gets released.

That Mike - the high charges are a big reason for me not buying as much-ie. everything - that Deadnet releases these days. I didnt think twice about ordering the 71-73 box, and it's so good that even though I may have been ripped of by UPS, I'm still glad I got it. But Dave's Picks....not so sure about that, now. I'm not subscribing, but if anything comes out from the years I like, I'll swoop like a Golden Eagle. I know this means missing the bonus-but so be it.

Rationalize? No, that's why my wife has credit cards!

But really, if that is going to be the "etching" on the 10th side!!!! Give!

How can you NOT have it!!

I had to have AND once again, no turntable!

And Jim, you WILL need that second cup for the jug being pour between now and 1/1.

Subscribed again. After getting shutout of DaP1, I won't make that mistake again. The early bird for us with in the US is a no brainer. If you go al a carte 3 times, what's the total including shipping? If you went with only the first three shows with a guesstimate of shipping @ $8 a release you'd be already @ $110 plus tax. If you went with #40 plus two others you'd be @ $120. If you get one you don't like, flip it or miracle it to someone.

SpaceBro, I do like your suggestion of what was missing in Dick's 3 to be part of DaP41 instead of DaP40 encore.

This was a big year on the vinyl releases from Dead.net - 5/3/72, 12/10/71, 10/18/72 - now 5/25/77. Putting them out before the price of vinyl skyrockets due to petroleum prices going up.

I wonder what the 1972 rerelease is - rerelease the 3 LP of Europe 72 or release more whole shows from Europe on vinyl?

PS my DaP40 arrived today (#18100) second one ending in Robert Parrish, wonder if he smoked a fatty with the boys when Walton was with the Celts...

Dooooooooood! "Psychedelic toe jam" -- you cats are on a roll today.

Yeah, the toad licking. My younger cousin tried to harangue me into "kissing the toad." That and taking ayahuasca, a potentially very dangerous agent outside its cultural context. See the ethnographic literature on out-of-body experiences, of which I've had one in 48 years of regular psychedelic usage. "Total destruction of the ego," my cousin assured me, with enthusiasm, adding that someone has to attend you as you puke and shit yourself. I said, "Hey, with no ego, there's no Hendrixfreak! No 'there,' there." Besides, if I can't take it solo, or without a diaper, I ain't goin' there.

Gonna blast the first set of Oct '72 from the box tonight. There's another point I'd like to share. Without the squeaky tight songs of the first set, you wouldn't get the full escape velocity of the second set.

Hey, two cents is all I've got. (Except this small, pillow-sized bag of ...... ya know.....

for those keeping score;
Quick count of 28 full and about a half dozen partials out of 60 shows for the year.
Including 41, which is another off this early list of Dave’s.

Dave's Picks 1 (5 25 77) ... my copy's disc 1 is degrading ... Promised Land will not play ... so I'm looking for any kind soul who might be able to help with such a problem ... just a clean copy of the music would be phenomenal if no one wants to part with the actual officially released Disc 1 ... thank you

Hey guys, don't give me any ideas. I'm a very impressionable middle aged man.

My python boot was too tight....

Thank you to the kind soul ...

Also, with 5 26 77 scheduled for release, what's left from May 77? Looks like 5 18 77 at the Fox is the last unreleased show aside from the NYC Palladium shows from late April-early May ... (and the 5 22 leftovers of course)

and what will Dave's 42 be? Seems like 74 is a good candidate even though unreleased shows from that year are becoming increasingly scarce ... 6 20 74 seems to be crying out for release amid all the other spectacular June 74 releases ... 2 23 74 with a 2 22 bonus disc? ... September 74 Paris shows? Anyway, I'm still salivating over the prospect of a 5 26 73 release here someday ... happy Halloween.

I'd rather lick psychedelic toes than psychedelic toads. It has to be the right person though - and you should ideally get their consent first.

Isn't that about snakes? Remember that rhyme from my one Florida trip when I asked the locals right after the deadly colored one slithered by at our picnic.

Red touch yellow, kill a fellow (coral snake, deadly). Red touch black, friend of Jack (king snake, imposter/charlatan, harmless). But they look almost identical.

Poison Dart Frog.., well.. any frog that looks like the hallucinations in Homer's frog licking trip will kill you. There are yellow and black, blue and black and red and black types. Don't lick them boys and girls.

Never remember those thing like, leaves of 3 quickly flee, berries white take fright.

I only remember if pain is in right arm I'm having a heart attack.
