- TheeAmazingAce3339 months agono one is bragging...
we, if i may speak briefly for the core 30 Dayers...
are all about kindness & support of each other...
the negativity & close-mindedness of most of the dead.net "regulars" thankfully rarely infects our little corner on this site...
so please, take that on back to the Dave's Picks Subscription page...

ps... is it freakin midnight yet?!? - deadheadned9 months agoi brag every year at this time
i tell family, friends & strangers every November about how this 30 Dead Days community is one of the most kind & sharing & peaceful on the internet. i look forward to this each year with great anticipation, and i soak up every bit of all of this.
thanks & love to all involved !(can't brag about my track record, tho. i'm just enjoying the ride.)

points to the fact that it's a version from before it was recorded. I actually started from the release date of Wake of the Flood so I ended up searching a few extra months but if you go to Wiki and look up recorded date and search backwards from there it's not too far. For those who needed for me to spell it out.
Comment
a relatively stress-free 9 fo 9...
there exists a maddening piece of paper ripped from my notepad with EVERY timing for EVERY PitBand btwn April 1979 - March 1985!!!!!!!
it's become a battle trophy...
texted gr8phul a pic of it, both sides, and he said "wow, Ace... that's amazing!" to which my retort was "that's my line..."
anyways...
oh damn, anyone see the Ravens comeback yesterday?!?
lastly, there is something, ummm... unique that occurs about midway thru the show... ♤
((( interesting placement for said show as well )))
Cain Did NOT Catch Abel Rolling Loaded Dice This Morning
Good news! The answer does not appear in my Windows Media Player this morning, so I get to listen to a bunch of Half Steps!
Deja Vu
All over again!
Damn shame
...that they never played Mississippi Half-Step, Tennessee Jed, and Alabama Getaway in the same show.
And that's not even including California Earthquake, The Maine Ten, or New Mexicali Blues.
This might be the toughest one yet
There are so many versions out there and i have already listened to about 50. Many are too long to fit so that's good to have automatic exclusions.
Half Step
Found today’s selection pretty quick, knew right away the year & the end of the song provided an easy clue.
Thanks for the vibes & scavenger hunting
Half Step Boogaloo
Got it on the second try, luck be a lady today!
I need to buy a lottery ticket.
Got it first try, second day in a row, by luck. Almost disappointing in a way.
Across the lazy river
That is me today, thought i had it but when i synced to double check it was perfect till the chorus then fell apart. Have another 25 or so to shuffle thru. I love this song but i am just hearing it without paying attention so i might have gone right by the one.
Lets try coffee and see if it helps the focus.
Am 2 days from completing another trip around the sun, so i am beat...lol
Whats up with you WILD BILL, how b life and the family?
WackaloonQ
Hey! I'm doing good. Hope you & your family is doing well. I went crazy listening to two years of Wharf Rats yesterday. LOL. I did find it even though it was filler on Dave's Picks 11. I would have sworn that Donna & Bob joined in the chorus of Wharf Rats in '72, but no.
Farewell to you old southern skies
I’m on my way! To me it seems easy to narrow down to a couple years. Also, I think this song was perfectly executed. With the smooth melodic piano and Bobby’s tone and nuances are on point. What tuned me in to my pick was the calm outro when Jerry was crossing the lazy river with such warm and soulful passion it was very smooth and unique compared to other versions.
Soul
Indeed! Co5mic charlie you are so right - Jerry's guitar outro is sublime and truly soulful, and even in the first break he instills the best kind of blues into this sometimes boisterous song.
"If all you got to live for is what you left behind..." maybe, but this is a heck of a show - looking through my past searches I see that I've bookmarked this one three times (and I'm enjoying some more of it as I write this). So thankful for the renewed memories and this wondrous music we can all share.
Just like crazy Otto, just…
Just like crazy Otto, just like Wolfman Jack,
Sittin' plush with a royal flush, aces back to back.
On my way-ee-ayy
This was more of a treat after yesterday's trick :)
Drum intro ...
... is key, but watch out for the cut point.
On The Mark
That's how I did it too but sometimes you have to reach back, if you know what I mean.
I Had The Mark Just As Plain As Day
This one was medium tough. No Windows gimme this time. I had to listen to over a year's worth of half-steps but I was able to find the one with the right marks before too too long.
Sometimes...
the cue ain't straight in line... Great version today. Fun to search. Good luck all.
Hello, baby, I'm gone, goodbye
After listening to about 40 versions of 1/2 Step
I think I finally got this one
Should make it 9 for 9
I'm on my way, on my way
Oh Donna!!
Love Donna's vocals on these Half Steps. She added a layer of sweetness to many songs. It's funny she says "Thank you" at the end. I wonder if Jerry used that line from The Big Lebowski... "Shut the %$#@ up, Donna! You're out of your element!!" Haha!!
Official hint
is actually helpful.
Still waiting for explanation of why yesterdays song was an officially released track when we are told they are not. The reason this bugs me is I skip officially released versions because we're told they're not gonna be one of those.
Well it was a bonus track
Can we get clarification that bonus tracks don’t count?
This song.....
seems to embody so much of what Jerry Garcia represents for me musically. I enjoy it everytime I hear it. Especially when he says "Pappy sat down and cried," or sometimes "Saddy dat down and cried." I can't imagine how challenging it must have been to keep straight all those lyrics, all those notes, chord changes and intro/outros, all the while trying to please everybody all at the same time and doing it all with one finger short of a full deck and a bloodstream full of god knows what. Just want to say for all that andmore............... THANKS FOR EVERYTHING. 😊
@geododge - All over again!
Yep, I headed down that same road and nailed it on the first swing.
And you know it makes me wonder
What's going on. . .in the vault, hmm.
Across the Rio!
What a great day and a great Half-Step. The hint today is actually helpful. Also, I find it rather serendipitous that someone mentioned the Ravens a few days ago. That is all I've got to say about that.
Why was the hint helpful
Can you elaborate?
Back on track
Just when it was beginning to feel fruitless, I listened to the music play. Phew
Lost my boots in transit Babe
Tired of smokin leather!!!
Guitar solo did it for me
Had to hear that guitar solo to make sure. He stays down in the mid to lower register to start instead of climbing right away.
How many people play?
I wonder how many people submit answers each day? and how many are correct? I see lots of familiar names in the comments, as well as some new ones.
Maybe it’s just me…..
Feels like I had to look across the Rio Grande, across that Lazy River…
Six of one...
I have found that no matter how long I search, I never find: 1) any meaning in the "hints" 2) any idea of what specific show these songs are from. Thus, I just guess. I still enjoy it and all...but it would be REALLY neat if the hints actually meant something.
No hints?
Check out my post from the OK City show day. The whole post was one big clue. I find more "clues" in the intros/outros, lyrical flubs and time signatures than anything else really. Lastly, if not doing so already, some type of earbuds/headphones or noise canceling system helps these old ears immensely. Keep on swimming. I agree the searching can be fun. Best of luck!
bragging rights
I have made it a point of not to brag about my personal 'correct guess' percentage because we inevitably get thrown a curve ball like a Casey Jones soundcheck from 1995, or something with a dubious date or venue.
True on so many levels
If all you've got to live for is what you've left behind, get yourself a powder charge and seal that silver mine
I continue to find new meanings and applications to Hunter's words as I continue on my way.
What a gem today...

is what you left behind
get yourself a powder charge
and seal that silver mine
Hunter the Wordsmith
“Every song falls short of the glory of what a song could be. That's why the urge is there to start again and yet again. Often it's the fault of rhyme. I've discovered a hundred times that there just aren't enough rhymes to say what I wanted to say, so I said something else instead. Sometimes it was a better thing, but the thing I meant to say went unsaid. So there's an opening for another song.”
