“Welcome to the unique, enduring phenomenon of the Grateful Dead in New York City, a mutual devotion, forged in concert, that ran for nearly as long as the band itself—from June 1, 1967, a free show in Tompkins Square Park on the Lower East Side (ahead of the band’s official, local bow at the Cafe Au Go Go), to the Dead’s last Garden run, six nights in October 1994…the Dead’s affinity for New York City…was instant and arguably their most profound with any city aside from San Francisco.” - David Fricke

They got on the bus to the Port Authority, rode in on the Long Island Railroad and the New Jersey Transit line. They traveled North, South, and West on the 1, 2, and 3 subway lines, their numbers growing as they descended upon Penn Station. Some rolled up in those iconic New York yellows. Some walked excitedly through the bright lights of Broadway and Times Square, meeting up with old friends on the way and picking up a few new ones too as they ascended The Garden's stairs. Maybe you were among them - lightly buzzed on the way in, fully aglow on the way home. New York City was in its prime and damn if the Grateful Dead wasn't going to rise up to meet it! If you were there, we call on you to join us as we recapture that MSG magic and if you weren't, we invite you along on the epic journey that is IN AND OUT OF THE GARDEN: MADISON SQUARE GARDEN '81 '82 '83.

This digital collection celebrates the band’s rich history at “the world’s most famous arena,” introducing six previously unreleased shows recorded at MSG between 1981 and 1983. It offers a front-row seat to the Dead in the early 1980s, an overlooked and underestimated era of rebirth for the band. At the time of the recordings, the group featured Brent Mydland. Mydland’s vocal power and colorful keyboard palette energized the band, invigorating older material like “The Wheel,” “Truckin’” and “Eyes of The World.” He also gave the band more musical flexibility, which encouraged them to dust off rarely aired treasures like “Dupree’s Diamond Blues” and “Crazy Fingers.”

IN AND OUT OF THE GARDEN touches on the three-year period after 1980’s GO TO HEAVEN was released, a time when the Dead were constantly on the road, playing more than 200 dates. While they were in no rush to return to the studio during this time, they continued to write new music. In 1982 and ’83, the band performed most of the songs that would appear on 1987’s IN THE DARK. The new collection includes performances of four songs from that album – “Touch Of Grey,” “Hell In A Bucket,” “Throwing Stones,” and “West L.A. Fadeaway” – plus the B-side, “My Brother Esau.”

Due September 23rd, it features newly restored and speed-corrected audio by Plangent Processes, mastered by Jeffrey Norman.

    Liner Notes?

Great collection, but no Liner notes by award-winning music journalist David Fricke. At least I couldn't find any such file in the downloads.

Edit: I have been informed that liner notes do not come with the digital edition, and should not have been included in the Product Details.

Enjoying these shows! One small thing - it would be great if the cover art in the files wasn't all the same. Looks like there is different imagery for each show if you get the physical discs. That would be a nice touch with the downloads too.

FLAC download worked without a hitch. File sizes look correct-ish for the bit rate. Just need to listen to make sure it's all there.

Note: I didn't use pre-order access. I purchased from the web site and got the download urls at the end of the purchase process.

Yes, I am having the same issue that says the download is not available yet. This is %$#@ ridiculous! If Dead.net doesn't have the capability to offer a purchase that downloads properly at the time it is offered then they shouldn't take your money until the download is available.

How about letting us know the resolution of the digital downloads? Why is this information no longer in the description as it was in earlier releases? Huh?

Is this truly a digital-only release? Not against that, but a very big change. Dead.net buried the led.

How in the world does one offer a limited edition digital product?

Release is sold as a box set and digital downloads. I don't buy cds anymore if there is a download option. Does this short circuit the "limited edition" game? I haven't a clue.

I don't buy downloads myself, but it occurs to me that with this medium, the extortionate shipping costs to non American countries are side stepped. As well as the limited edition trick being potentially negated.

The resolution is in the product description

ALAC - 44k/16b
FLAC - 192k/24b

Thank you to whoever updated the description. Now that I know, I'll be ordering the FLAC digital downloads.

If someone could do the same for the Lyceum downloads, that would be helpful as well.

Thanks.

On September 23 you will receive a notification of downloads, but they will not be available. No one will respond to your support requests. Eventually, probably a couple weeks later, you'll be able to download music. Plan your enthusiasm accordingly.

It seems like every time I pre-order a digital release, there are issues with the download. For this release, I'll wait until the issues have been resolved before I place an order.

Edit: To be fair, a few of the box set downloads had no issues. I honestly can't remember which ones, but there were a few.

Please wait until release day. Unfortunately, some will order on that day as well and they well may be unavailable. At least we will know whether or not the downloads work.

So, the product description still says the download will be available on 9/23 while the box set has been delayed until 9/30. An oversight? Perhaps. I guess we'll see.

Only one concert in the digital download as already been posted by others. Is each concert scheduled to be in a different download because of the file size of the zip file?

Only one show available for download (10/12/83) out of the six purchased, despite being sold as all six shows available today for d/l (9/23)
Looks like others having same issue.
Contacted customer support (hah) ...
Totally lame.

I am extremely disappointed that only the 10/12/83 show was available when I downloaded the box set this morning. I paid a lot of money for this and was excited to listen this morning. Dead.net had months to make things ready for release day and failed. Very poor showing...

The file “In_and_Out_of_the_Garden_Madison_Square_Garden_81_82_83_101283_Digital_Album_Live_FLAC.zip.download” doesn’t appear to be a valid download file.

Anyone else dead in water?

I submitted a support ticket and got a response quickly from Sherry who said she has sent the request to the digital download team. At least they were quick on responding. I think they need a new digital download team though.

After the download, only the first show unzipped. OH, NO, I thought. Not again. However, this time I was not to be denied. I got a new version of WinZip for Mac and manually unzipped them. I'm now a happy camper. A little more work, but it's totally worth it. Sounds great!
