When Bobby started working on ACE at Wally Heider’s Studio in San Francisco in early 1972, he wasn’t planning for the Grateful Dead to be his backing band. It just happened. “I pretty much knew in the back of my mind what would happen,” Weir told Crawdaddy a few months after the sessions. “I go and get the time booked and start putting the material together. Everybody gets wind of the fact I got the time booked and I may be going into the studio. So, one by one, they start coming around…”

It made sense, the band was already familiar with most of the music, having road-tested six of the album’s eight songs, including “Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Mexicali Blues,” and “Playing In The Band,” destined to become one of Weir’s signature tunes. ACE also marked the beginning of Weir’s long-running collaboration with lyricist John Perry Barlow and includes early standouts “Cassidy” and “Looks Like Rain.”

My cd version arrived on release date, of course I didn’t order it from this site. Amazon UK gives the vinyl release date as February 3rd so it’s presumably delayed since the announcement. You could look at your version of the Amazon website to see if they give the same date. Expecting updates from this site is a fools game. I just sit back and wait for the items to arrive.

Edit: Looking again it might be a different version on Amazon because it’s described as 2 discs. Looking at this site they say the LP version is in stock so hopefully you’ll get a shipper notification soon.

Just wondering when they plan on shipping this product? In the past, when I preordered something, it was delivered on the sale date! Now, I can't even find out if my order has shipped, on the sale date! You seam to have the money taking part down, how about fixing your delivery/tracking system!

50th anniversary for Garcia and Ace and just now you're dangling this 2023 release with additional material that is dubious at best. We're all aging rapidly out here and would appreciate a more concerted effort. Skipping this one. I'll get by with my original scratchy records and initial CD releases.

Great lp back in the day

I have a copy and I won't be purchasing this one, and I don't think putting the slow music of the wolf pack as the 2nd cd is really much of a selling point. There should have been a great 70 show released with this, or outtakes, or just about anything else.

I'm a bit surprised this one hasn't attracted more comments. It's not being promoted in a very appealing way, but it was quite good, in it's day. I played my old album yesterday to remind me..and yes....still a good one. Nice acoustic guitar rhythm at times, and what sounds to me like Jerry playing a tele on Mexicali Blues ( probably a strat) and someone strumming a 12 string on Cassidy.

It's a bit late now, but it would of been an interesting project to release an album of all the songs written by Garcia/Weir/Hunter from 1971 and 1972, that didn't appear on a named Dead studio album, and present them as whole. That would cover songs off Skull and Roses, Ace, Garcia's First and Europe 72.

So glad to see the Ace 50th release. I would have preferred to see some studio outtakes but a live show old or new is always welcome. Now I can hope for a 50th Rolling Thunder release (with outtakes).

Yes, that would have been great if they had included some 1972 live music to compliment this release.

It's very trivial...but I'm not keen on the way they keep referencing him as "Bobby". I can't remember if my mum ever called me Davy, but if she had I am sure I would have asked her to stop when I got to the age of about 6.

Why no live songs from 1972?
