As you're likely now aware, we'll be reissuing some of the Dave's Picks releases on vinyl, re-mastered from the original analog tapes by Jeffrey Norman. We won't be releasing them all, but we'll be curating some of our and your favourites on an occasional basis. Last year, Vol. 1 from 5/25/77 came out on vinyl, and the second release will be Vol. 23, the magnificent show from 1/22/78 in Eugene, OR. This show is dynamite from start to finish, with a few upper-tier Grateful Dead moments from the 1977-1978 period. The unique "Close Encounters" theme and "St. Stephen" are the centrepieces of what is considered one of 1978's best second sets. We have more great Dave's Picks planned for vinyl release, so stay tuned, but for now we hope you'll dig the long-sold-out-on-CD Vol. 23. - David Lemieux

Close encounters in Eugene, Oregon! We are not alone in saying this one could be considered top-of-line Grateful Dead from 1978. Yes, as the tales have been told, 1/22/78 conjured up vibes of the Be-in, Altamont, Yippies, Psychedelia, Woodstock, Free Speech, Acid Trips, heaven for one lucky concert-goer, and of course, aliens. If you wanna know what we're on about, there's no better way to experience the show than with this lovingly-restored version from legendary sound engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson's recordings. Witness sets packed with bright and vibrant gems like a surprisingly heavy "Row Jimmy," a freshly tender "Ship Of Fools," and a transcendental "The Other One." And if you have levitated too far, Jerry's "Close Encounters" solo (ironic, we know) will reel you back in and set you right up for the powerful crescendo of "St. Stephen" and the band's shake-it-all-about boogie-down finale.

Yeah, these discs are screwed, especially sides 2 and 3 for me. When I asked for a refund all I got was an undeliverable message, BOOOOOO! Got me thinking about future vinyl purchases for sure, this one just.doesn't.cut.it. PM to Marye, our resident hero...

Took me awhile to find how to comment - I've had similar quality issues with DP Vol. 23 - every disc sounds like someone walked on it. Side 2 Peggy-O has a blemish that sounds like it would take the diamond off the cantilever.
    Quality inspection!
Will take a good look at ordering any additional vinyl. You spend this kind of $$, you should expect a good product. Quite a difference to the 1977-05-07 Boston RSD release.

Is this set hand numbered (or numbered at all) like the Dick's Picks sets?

Yes my DaP 1 has 4637/5000 stamped on the back. I also have the DiP 19 vinyl 687/4500 which is hand written, it appears, on the back (in sharpie?). The sound is excellent on both releases. I was hoping they'd go in numerical order as I am missing Dave's 1-11 on CD. My missing Dead years. But I guess that isn't the business model they are after here which is just fine. They're all a gift.
Cheers
Edit: My Light Into Ashes 2 LP says Limited Edition of 7200 on the back (gatefold LP packaging) but no individual number on it. The original Dick's Picks CD series did not have numbers but all the Dave's Picks do.

The DaP1 was stamped. The two from Brookhaven (DP3, DP8) as well as the Real Gone (DP19, DP33) that I have were numbered in pen/sharpie.

The listing shown on Dead.net appears to be only 4 of the 5 discs. The show can't end of side H "Space" can it?

Where is the "Close Encounters" theme? Where is "St. Stephen"?

It looks like Sides I and J were inadvertently omitted from the track listing, where the final 2nd set songs NFA > Around and Around and US Blues should fit.

It was amazing. I was living in Bend, OR, over the mountains from Eugene, where I had been in the UO. I remember driving over the Mackenzie Pass in the snow to get there and back (actually, I don't remember if we drove back; I had a girlfriend in Eugene then. She (1) may have come to the show with me (2) had me spend the night. So sorry I don't remember. It was a long time ago. I do remember parts of the show - Terrapin suite, not generally one of my favorites, was amazing. And I think it was the only time I saw them do Bertha, probably my favorite live Dead song. So, if I can scrape up the bucks, I'm gonna get a copy. Problem: shipping it to Israel, where I live now, will probably cost a fortune. So, I'll look into it. So glad, though, it's been published on vinyl. Maybe someone at Dead HQ could take pity on me and find a way to get it to me for a reasonable amount of money. Does it count that I play acoustic Dead at tribute shows here in Israel. Yes, there is a great Deadhead scene here.

Alan - hopefully it will count that you were at the show as well. I once borrowed a folk singers acoustic in a bar in Ventura, and played Ripple while he chatted up my girlfriend. Some people will steal the clothes off your back. He asked me if I knew any English music. In a word....no.

Some have had success using guest check out.
The store requires a different password now than your old one.
Separate from your rest of the site password.
Been that way for a while now.
That said that check out has had gremlins too
Hard to say. Good luck. Maybe Marye is looking over us?

I was trying to make an order, and then thought I would add a second box to my cart. The order then went through super quick. Made me think of an earlier thread i saw questioning what they thought Rhino's selling model was. Now I will have to cancel one of the sets.

Totally unable to complete preorder without getting a “busy or call your card provider” message, or “value can’t be 0” type error using PayPal

Any ideas folks? Managed to successfully navigate the changes for this years’ DP subs, so not sure what’s different about this one….

Added a second set, order went through like an express train. Apparently.

If anyone in the UK wants a set, please message me. This has been a bit of a mess quite frankly. I’m no sure I trust the process has worked despite confirmations. I used the well known electronic payment provider option but wasn’t prompted for multi factor authentication etc. We’ll see. If no takers, I’ll have to try a figure out how to cancel one set, which will be fun indeed!

Ordered mine yesterday when it went live. Bought just one, didn't use PayPal to complete just typed in info. Ever since they've made changes to the site, I can't chnage my profile pick or sign in to my account, but I can still sign in as me to post. Other times PayPal doesn't work as mentioned. Lotsa loose belts and toothless gears around these parts lately.

Hi there fella!

If my mental ‘rithmatic is right, £135.80 give or take a tuppence or two… Plus whatever the import duty and handling charge the wonderful striking Royal Mail add. One benefit is that it’ll be only one handling fee obviously.

I think you can safely say around £155 all in, but I’m not 100% sure on duty rates right now.

If you want it, I’ll guarantee you won’t pay a Penny more than what you’d pay to order it yourself, plus you’d save a tenner on handling, and I’ll cover the last leg from me to you. Entirely up you and no need to rush a decision or take me up on it chap. Would be my pleasure though.

Drop me a line outside of the comments section if you want to have a catch up or sound off further…

Thanks very much for that. I can't decide about this. I'll give it some thought, an drop you a line tomorrow, if that's alright. In the mean time, if anyone else contacts you and says they are interested, then don't let me stand in the way.
It's a pity they can't release these albums on Amazon UK - just looking this morning, both 3/1/69 and the St Louis 1971 show are there on vinyl at quite good prices comparably. In fact, 3/1/69 is so reasonable, I'm tempted to buy it again!

The international shipping for two boxes in one order is $34.02 moe expensive than buying them individually (except you can't).

I am also concerned that the cost of importing 2 sets will be higher proportionally than one.

I have submitted a request to ask for the cancellation of one box. 🤞

Seems to be an issue when shipping outside of U.S. I got a generic response from my email that was useless and then sent screenshots. They said they would forward to I.T. Dave also asked me to send screenshots on twitter so hopefully it gets sorted out before it sells out!

I think it has already been mentioned - but no harm again - I had trouble at first ordering Dave's 45 as a stand alone a la carte set a few weeks ago. But when I signed in as a "guest" it all went through okay. Might be worth a shot if you haven't already tried it.

I preordered the 5LP 1978 show in February but still have no evidence I'll even receive it outside my original order. I emailed customer service. Their response was pretty much useless: unfortunately we cannot tailor a specific response due to a high number of inquiries, blah, blah...

I buy as much as i can and spend lots of money here as you all do. But this endless "hurry up and buy now before they're all gone" business model Rhino has poisoned the Dead with has really grown tiresome. It should really go back to how it was pre-Rhino where the music was always available and reprints of titles were a thing. Just my thoughts on it all.

Yes, I agree with that. High number of enquiries? Is that a joke? - probably a recorded message that was put there about 5 years ago.

Curious as to what people think of this album. I am buying more and more vinyl, and haven't been disappointed with any Dead ones so far. But with 6/10/73 coming out it has stiff competition.

Mine arrived on Saturday in the UK - alas the box was damaged, dinged corners and splits in the top and bottom seams of the tray, along with light scratch marks on record 5 (and lots of paper bits from the inner sleeve cut outs). The cardboard mailer was the low level sort that I thought nobody had used for years offering minimal protection - so different from normal Rhino packaging. Alas Rhino Customer Service very busy and seem to be in Groundhog Day with automated replies. Fingers crossed they get their act together soon and sort it out.
