All hail the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows!

The Grateful Dead played more than 2,000 concerts, but none continues to spark interest and provoke discussion quite like the band's performance at Cornell University's Barton Hall on May 8, 1977. It is one of the most collected, traded, and debated concerts by any band ever, has topped numerous fan polls through the years, and was a favorite of the group's longtime archivist Dick Latvala, who stated: "Enough can't be said about this superb show." Even Uncle Sam got into the act in 2011 when the recording was deemed so important to the history and culture of the United States that a copy was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.

CORNELL 5/8/77 was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson. After several years the master tapes were seemingly lost for good, but that all changed at the end of 2016. The lost tapes finally made their way back home to the Grateful Dead vault, making it possible to officially bring the world this legendary show. The complete live show has been transferred and restored by Plangent Processes and remastered by long-time Grateful Dead engineer, Jeffrey Norman.

Totally missed any announcement about this one = SAD

Hey y'all. Somehow I completely missed the announcement on this (was there one? I'm subscribed to the emails..), and I guess I had not dropped into my local brick & mortar for a while or I would have snatched this up. Been waiting for a repress for years, the 'flippers' made it impossible the first time around (and I didn't know there was a 2nd either).

Does anybody know if it's just gone, gone, gone? Because I don't even see a product page on this site, nothing to indicate whether it will be coming back or not. I can possibly get a sealed copy at only a 50% markup, which still hurts but it could be much worse.

    5/7/77 - vinyl. Much joy.

Well, it's hugely enjoyable to listen to, I'll say that much. It sounds really good - I know the cds do too, but I haven't, and am not going to compare them. Quite wasteful really...but what the heck. L.P.s always inspire me to listen to Dead shows one album at a time, which means I focus on the music more than if I collapse in a heap and late hours wash over me. But again - I could easily take the same approach with cds, of course - but I don't seem to.
There's no surface noise at all on the records I have listened to. As is well known, it's a great show too - especially from Mississippi Half Step onwards. This version of Music Never Stops is exceptional, spiralling away there out of my speakers.
The last side is just over 6 minutes long - U.S. Blues and that's your lot.

They do take up a lot of space L.PS. but never seem to cause quiet the clutter that cds do. I think it's quite important, as you get older, to get rid of extraneous rubbish, and fill your house with what gives you the most joy.

Thanks for warning. I not sure if I buy this stuff for the sound fidelity, I have the cd's and I'm sure they will sound just fine. I buy the vinyl stuff mainly because I'm an idiot who thinks this stuff will be worth money someday that my kid can use. I also a completist (fancy way of saying asshole). I'd like to have all the Europe 72 in cd & vinyl, same with May 77 collection. I've been buying the Dave's and Dicks in vinyl. Maybe someday if you have cd & vinyl sets you can at least get what you paid for it. Well see.

Sometimes I wonder if the prices you see in resale are A) prices they really get and B) will only sell at these prices while there are old fucks like me willing to pay. Maybe when the last of this generation dies off our kids will just throw all this stuff in the can or sell for pennies. I'll be dead, I won't care! :-)

PS - already have the Lyceum maxi box,,,, that was a chunk of coin!

PPS - I might be willing to spend that amount again on an axe!

PPPS - Tubes first (gonna order tomorrow)

    Changing sides

Well yes, of course, the fact that you have to get up and change sides with L.P.s every 20 minutes or so is a given with all records, not just 5/9/77. If you think 20 minutes is tough, you should get 5/19/74 on vinyl. One of those sides is precisely 6 minutes 38 seconds long.

I never compare sound quality with L.P.'s and cds that I have. Taking that into account, I played Dicks Picks 33 on vinyl earlier this week - that's 9th and 10th October 1976, and that sounds beautiful - possible the best sounding record I have of the Dead. It fits the style of music they were playing then, too. Exploratory but very elegant. Almost refined. There isn't any unpleasantness, put it that way. I would say the value of that outstrips the cost.

Don’t overpay for 5-9-77 vinyl, it doesn’t sound better than the CD (and you have to get up and flip it every <20 minutes).
I got the vinyl on release day at a local brick and mortar for, I think, $90.
If you’re going to spend $300 on vinyl Might As Well put those funds towards the Lyceum vinyl Box if you don’t have it already.

It's a tough call, paying over the odds for something that has now become deleted. I have just paid over the odds for the Allman Brothers Band Brothers and Sisters 4cd box on Discogs. And frowned when I saw the first cd is scratched - but it plays okay so...
I have also just realised it was released in 1973, so it's possible ANOTHER box set will come out this year making the tatty one I've got obsolete. It's a ruddy jungle out there.

I know the second I spend the money, the dead will announce the HUGE box set that I just got to have!

Bad enough Little Feat just announced Sailin' Shoes and Dixie Chicken redo's.

Also need tubes for my pre-amp,,,,,, CAN NOT believe what a tube set can cost!!!!

Thanks for the word on 5/9/77.

PS - No word on 46 yet,,,,, I'm hoping (not to hard), that by some miracle it just shows up tomorrow (with my shot glass!)

I've just had a look on Discogs UK and they have a copy of 5/9/77 for £165-00 + £5.00 postage in England. It's described as opened but never played. It will obviously cost more to post to the U.S. - but not such a bad price as it stands. If you wanted, I could buy it and then you buy it off me, with the postage etc - or order it direct yourself of course. Or none of these things!

First comment (as usual) UPS sucks. Over a week to get it from California to Dallas. Took the PO 10 hours to put in my hand after they got from UPS. Logistics my ass!

I like the simple boxes they seem to be putting the May 77 collection in.

The blow away factor is the 10th side etching,,,,, without doubt the best etch yet.

For the record,,, I think it's a pressing and not an etch. Etch makes it sound like a laser did the picture,,, which I doubt.

I know I will buy all the May 77 stuff as it comes out. BUT, I had a scary thought the other day,,,, the cost of the whole Spring 1990 boxes,,,,16 shows!

Also for the record... I am working to get stereo back online and a turntable hooked up :-)

Is this a re-issue of the same mastering/processing as the original 5/8/77 release. This one highlights plangent processing but I can't find the old info for the original release a few years ago. Is there going to be any sort of improvement on the sound or where these records cut from the same originals. Also this version is 140g records and the last was 180g vinyl. Any ideas? I'd order but I already have the other edition.

Can anyone tell me if there is anything different from the original pressing that was released by dead.net a few years back? Have they done anything different or is it just re-release (which is good bc ebay sellers have this way high $$ ...
also: were the original master tapes used to put it on vinyl (was it mastered specifically for vinyl or was it the same mastering as they used for the CD?)
I have the May 77 box set so I'm kind of like Abraham and Isaac 'sitting on the fence' here ... I need some help on the way before I buy ...

THANKS!!!!

They came out with a Limited Edition of, I believe, 7700 copies with the announcement of the Get Shown The Light box set. It was so popular, they announced a second version, not sure how many, but said nothing about a Limited Edition, but slightly different colors. Then there was a version, which the artwork matched the cd, only 4 lp’s. Now there is this one, which looks to be the same as the second one, processed by all the good parties, Glasser, Norman, Plangent, etc. I may have left out some details but that’s all I have.

So this looks like a re-press to me given the amount on here and the pre-order status. If they already had them leftover from the last release it wouldn’t be a preorder. Guess the email was wrong. Oh well happy to finally get one!

Hey All,
Regarding any Q’s about what this 5 l.p. product is, original release date, 180G , 140G , remastered or not, matrix #’s, identifier’s, etc etc, go to the database over at discogs.com and take a look around…
Yours,

I was just starting to quite fancy it, too. Still...ne'er mind. I got the vinyl copy of Dicks 19 - 10/19/73 delivered today. It sounds great to my ears. As a show, it starts quite modestly, and builds up as it goes. Not a year where first sets blow me away, as a rule, but the second sets are up there in the clouds.

Now I received an email that this has been shipped. I also received a notice from UPS - but when I check the tracking it says only a label was printed. so it looks like these are back in stock.

I got the same mail,,,, look for the product in 10 days!

Shipped to them seems to mean we sent a mailing list to UPS. Now UPS has to print labels and label all the packages, then start the slow process of actually moving them thru the mail system.

I have an extra copy of 3/1/69 fillmore (vinyl) and should be getting an extra copy of 1 from the vault.
