Joined:"Stop Booing Us Then!"I can't remember the where the clip I saw that was at or on, but Bob and The Band are in a taxi cab somewhere in the U.K. after a show and Dylan is hollering out the window in response to someone's inaudible yet supposed positive comments.
I wonder how much influence all that specific negativity had upon his songwriting then? Top that off with being a bit spegeetered on them "diet pills" I sort of understand why he could become a cynical assholio!
Personally I dig the Rolling Thunder Review era and the "Street Legal" album. Though the final tour with The Band in 1974 was a pinnacle of music. Dylan is the one musician with the most 'eras' and longevity through metamorphosis it would seem, Even more than The Dead.
Neil Young also had similar life tribulations and musical themes to his long professional career journey. Though I think Neil was honestly a true 'hippie dream' believer {till he wasn't} unlike Dylan who may have really never been. - daverock
Joined:Dylan on filmTwo other good dvd's - I haven't got the blu ray discs of these or Don't Look Back, are "The Other Side of the Mirror", which features great performances from the Newport Folk Festivals of 1963,1964 and 1965 and Martin Scorsese's " No Direction Home" which takes us up to May 1966.
We can't really know about another's drug use unless they tell us about it themselves. But if pushed, I would say his work in the 60's seems more driven by amphetamines than any other drug.

Joined:I’m not a Dylan historianBut maybe the earlier comments that he was taking speed is what influenced his song writing.
If he was taking acid instead, his writing may have been more like the hippies at that time.I had previously considered getting the Dylan Box but then decided against it due to the lack of variety in the set lists.
I do have the Don’t Look Back Blu-ray, which is pretty good. - daverock
Joined:A Complete UnknownI saw this film earlier today. Really enjoyed it, too. When I got back home I dipped into the 1966 box set of live recordings, with Copenhagen and then Dublin from 1st and 5th respectively. Great stuff - although you do basically get the same set repeated over and over again. The first 3 songs of the electric set have always seemed a bit of an odd choice to me, considering all the other great songs he had at his disposal. But it's a great box to own - one to take all year to get through, though.
RYXS - it's not just his music that seems at odds with the psychedelic dream - from 1965 his attitude to his audience and peers seems quite hostile too. In some ways, his behaviour seems a bit more in line with the punks of the following decade than with hippies of the 60's.
Curiously, in some ways Pete Seeger comes across as a more sympathetic character than Dylan, with his life long commitment to civil rights and support of left wing causes and community based projects.

Joined:End of a Hippie Dream?Daverock seems to be right on about that lyrical subject matter. I may be a youngster and all this was before my time but analytically speaking I can hear exactly that point that was made! The early folksy stuff of Dylan was way more peaceful fun time 'hippie' than Hwy61 and it's gritty element of hard time living. What a trip!
The songs "Ballad of a Thin Man" and "Tom Thumb Blues" really set the true tone of the motif from the book-ended "Rollin' Stone" to "Desolation Row" and all of the last gasps of any good time hippie dream desperation along the way. Weirdly that album was in 1965~'66. The Dead and the happy San Francisco scene was just swinging into full bloom. I guess Dylan had foreshadowed something that wouldn't be realized out west till a few years later at the festival in Altamont. What happened Bob? Was it the New York City living? - daverock
Joined:Words are birdsThe most psychedelic album Bob Dylan cut, to my ears, is Bringing It All Back Home. Lyrically, not musically. Mr Tambourine sounds like a celebration of tripping to me. There is also a sense of fun and wonder on that album that seemed to disappear on the albums that followed. Not that I don't think Highawy 61 and Blonde On Blonde aren't great - amazing records - but they had a hardness about them that didn't exist before. And Positively 4th Street must be one of the harshest songs ever written. Welcome to the summer of love!
With Rainy Day Women, I'm sure he was aware of both connotations of the word stoned. The fact that he never stooped to explanation encourages different interpretations. Which is surely for the best.

I saw Garcia and Hunter play there one night and Hunter said ,I remember when this place was a grocery store, we used to shop lift here. I saw Muddy Waters play there, Big Mama Thorton and Charlie Musslewhite one night. I saw Garcia play a fantastic acoustic show there one night I believe it was Jan. of 86 , hopefully it will be released one day.

Spent many hours at both Keystones, small clubs where you could get really close to the band, and I don't recall these shows selling out(tickets at the door only) At the Berkeley location, Jerry and the band had to make their way through the crowd to get to the stage; cool room upstairs with a foosball game, and couches. These days are long gone; I always get nostalgic listening to Like a Road!
Pretty sure BTK went to a few of these :-)

Smokin'
PF - 30 Days in the Hole come from one of their best studio albums - "Smokin'". The 3rd album "Humble Pie " and 4th "Rock On" are also good.
The album that is usually considered their best, though, is the live "Performance: Rockin' The Fillmore" from 1971. That's where the most well known version of "I Don't Need No Doctor" comes from. I am not so keen on this one overall - there are some very, very long r'n'b style tracks on here, which do go on a bit. 23 minutes + of "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" and over 16 minutes of Muddy Water's "Rollin' Stone". They'd have been better keeping things under 5 minutes if you ask me.

Are you burning audio DVD’s?
Colons: Why I Love Them
Actually, I don't know why: I just do. I once used to like to use a lot of dashes--you know the kind I mean? But eventually I realized: colons are just better.
And man oh man I used to love me some Humble Pie. That Rockin the Fillmore album was pretty much IT for me in the first year of junior high. Because it fucking rocks, obviously. Frampton plays some nice leads, Marriot is just a force of nature. I remember spending quality time with Smoking' and Eat It, too, when they came out. Thirty Days in the hooooole!
I've actually been surprised how the Pie seem to have been forgotten. Some of the music from that era got accepted into the classic rock canon, destined forever to be played on FM classic rock stations, and some ... didn't.
I don't want to call out any of the bands that DID get immortalized but truly ain't worth the time it takes to hear their songs once let alone 57,389 times. So I won't. Because there's always somebody out there who loves that band that I think is shite and it's just opinion anyway so why start in?
But I'm just sayin: the Pie ruled. Surprising they aren't more well known these days.

what Crow said…Real, good old fashion R&R kiddies! Check it!
Conekid: never tried?
Used mostly to record Sabres games before I had a DVR, and back when the Sabres didn’t suck! Also to upgrade some VHS tapes etc.
Haven’t used it in years…I do like to record DVD audio digital direct (no conversion) to the Masterlink, then down res to Redbook, especially when they have more ambient mics than the CD releases. It can do higher res discs too, but the higher res requires much more disc space. Theoretically I could do hi res stereo blu-Ray direct and burn those as Hi res discs, or down res to redbook, but in that case I’d just play the BR disc on the Oppo…but, can’t rip to my server as configured unless I go redbook.
Forgotten rockers
Crow - that seems like a golden opportunity to mention other bands that time has forgotten. And the first one that came to my mind were The Pirates, formerly of Johnny Kidd and...who re-formed circa 1977. I went along to see them knowing nothing about them. They were a 3 piece who took the stage all dressed as actual pirates. At a time when most people who attended rock gigs looked as though they were starving to death, they looked unfashionably well fed. And old. Way over 30. So it didn't look very promising.
But as soon as they started the first number they were off, taking us with them. Incredibly tight and energetic - they were of a completely higher standard to any punk band I saw around that time. This was rock n' roll alright. The guitarist, Mick Green, whacked merry hell out of his telecaster. Astonishing.
This was recognised by other rockers in the industry. Lemmy endorsed them and recorded with them, and Mick Green joined Dave Gilmour as a guitarist in Paul McCartney's rock n' roll band in the 1990's. The last time I saw them live, in a small club around 2006, I was standing next to no less a luminary than Jimmy Page. But I don't think they ever got the credit they were due from the public.
Maybe I'm wrong, and everyone on here knows all about them! It would be great if they did.
JRAD is finally coming to Vegas....
....three shows in late April.
Dave's Picks
Are we feeling a seaside chat today??
I hope so.
I was looking at the number that are still for sale and it doesn't look good from a sales standpoint. The only one that is sold out from last year is #49. From 2023, you still have 46-48.
I was looking on eBay the other day and I saw #52 being offered for sale for $20. That would be less than their cost after sales fees etc.
Anyway, I hope these all sell out at some point and it appears the days of being sold out in a day or two are over.
DV and DaP
Howdy DV, warm enough out there for ya lol. We’re looking at 10 below zero this WE with -25 wind chill, but I bet that’ll be balmy comparatively to y’all, brrrr
And Sorry for your loss : (
I feel bad for Sam I Am as this might of effected his career negatively, which sucks cause it wasn’t all his fault. He got no protection, and I think his receivers dropped more passes than I saw all year! Really, they need to get a more multifaceted approach to compete at the top. But it was a great run, till the last couple.
BUT!
That’s what’s great about the Dead…ya always win!
That is if you can get it delivered ; )
I’m guessing Tuesday DV, but could be today?
They don’t seem too concerned about the numbers yet, and I bet they could drop em down to 18 or 20k and still be happy. Remember they started with what ? 12K and seemed tickled pink when they sold out.
I think it’s good they don’t sell out so quick as it gives folks who don’t live “here”a chance to get one in a reasonable time.
Gotta wonder if some of those picks impacted that though? Seems like 49 sold in the Goldilocks zone: not too fast, not too long, just exactly perfect lol. Hmmmm, makes ya wonder?
Only time will tell.
Stay warm up there broheim!
Onward!
Perhaps it Was the EBay Situation?
I'm recalling (in some measure, IIRC?) that the 'resellers' were cut out of the market - or it was made much less remunerative for them - due to rules changes over this stretch of time ... So yes, it is good to see folks who might have been shut out get fair chances. I also would not think there's an issue with dialing the production run amount back somewhat and having these releases return to selling out, say, in an average of 2 to 3 months time.
Tru Dat
S-W-B
It did seem like they stopped selling out as quick when the new tax laws came into play. I agree, couple months to sellout seems just exactly perfect.
53..
Will the new Daves be a "Betty Board" or a Healy tape (Dicks 20 were both recorded by Healy) ?
Dave's Picks
Appreciate the feedback guys.
Danehead, yes, it will be a Healy recording as Betty was not with them on this tour due to the passing of Rex.
So, a couple years ago, the IRS, under the current administration wanted to tax all transactions for the year that totalled over $600. This would include eBay, PayPal, Venmo, etc. The old cap was $20,000. This would include selling a bike on Craigslist or CDs on eBay. They received so much push back they increased the amount to $5,000. This is still in place for 2025.
I agree, if they sell out in a couple of months, that would be great. Seems like we are far exceeding that time frame as we have Picks from 2023 still for sale. Anyway, I just feel like it would be much better for all of us if the music they put out sells out.
I can't remember the last time one sold out in hours or even a couple of days, despite Dave claiming, some sell out in hours. I think you have to go back to 2017 or 2018 when this was happening on a regular basis.
OB, yes, we have a two day reprieve from the below zero weather here. Never fun to be below zero. Hang in there man.
And oh yes the Vikes. How would you like to be a fan of this team. I don't even get mad anymore. New quarterback same old sad story, offensive line is terrible. I could keep complaining but it is not worth it.
The owners however, will pat themselves on the back for a great regular season.
Go Bills! I will be pulling for them.
Selling
Hey DV, aren’t those caps based on profit or net gain, not cost of item and profit? And if you didn’t have receipts you had to pay both?
And didn’t that factor in because who the hell has Receipts for DaP for instance?
Hey…it’s a dry cold here, not like back in the tundra along the damp shores of L Erie, bbrrrr, I’ll take zero and sunny here over 20, overcast, and drizzling back there. (No offense to the good hearty folks there, but I did pay my dues there for over three decades ; )
OB
Yes, so, the reporting threshold is based on gross. It is up to the individual to show the IRS how much they paid for the items and how much was profit. Yes, if you don't have receipts for your cost, you would owe taxes on the full $5,000.
I think it was good in my opinion to move from $600 to $5000. Do you want to be taxed on your garage sale profits? Or the bike you sold? Not me.
Stay warm out there.
In the Long Run
I think probably the main reason the DaPs don't usually sell out anymore is the limited edition is now twice as big as it used to be. Let's not overthink this. It's easier to sell 12,000 than it is 24,000. It's not rocket science.
Also, I don't think we need to worry too much about this. There's been no indication that they need to sell every copy of every item in order to keep the series alive. In fact it would be incredibly poor planning to budget the series so that you have sell 24,000 to make any money. There's going to be a break even point that's well short of the full run, if Dave & Co. know what they're doing. And considering the series has lasted more than 50 volumes, I'm thinking they probably do.
Fingers crossed
For a seaside chat tomorrow
Music used to be released on Tuesday, but I believe it's Friday now
Just my 2 cents
Rock on, gang!
Comic books used to be released on Wednesdays....
....wonder if that's still true? Haven't collected comics since the early '90's. Got 13 long boxes worth.

I don't think this is a money making exercise
This astonishing body of work needs archiving before the tapes deteriorate
We are both funding this and benefitting from it
Long may it continue!
RIP David Lynch
I was shocked and saddened to read of David Lynch's passing. I have been watching his films since I saw "The Elephant Man " in a cinema in Oldham back in 1980. No other film maker has had the same impact on me. I only finished re-watching the 3rd series of "Twin Peaks" two days ago. Amazing. What an imagination and way of expressing it. It was also through following him that I learned about transcendental meditation. Something to think about today.
"In the long run"..
"Hear Hear".. bw from Copenhagen..
Eraserhead
It was Eraserhead I saw at the cinema in 1980, not The Elephant Man.
Eraserhead
Probably the weirdest film I have ever seen. I've never seen chickens the same way since.
Stone Man Dave & The Pirates
Thanks for this mention.
On utube found an album of Johnny Kidd & The Pirates (a two cd set called The Very Best of.....)
Downloaded it. Nice 50's / 60's rock. Would have called them "oldies" in my youth. Some great stuff.
The tube also had two live shows from "the pirates", from 77 and 79. Grabbed them both.
As always I thank the community for pointing out music stuff. NO one can know every group, ever. But as a group we throw a large loop.

Selling cont
First, 24000 X $100 = 2,400,000 (more for ala carte), so it’s not like their not making any money. And that’s just DaP, there’s also boxes, merch, other music, and miscellaneous shwag, which you’d think the series helps bolster.
And, it’s probably helping to foster a new generation of fans/consumers.
Not sure about Plangent costs, but double dipping with vinyl sales surely helps reduce that, AND they already have the shows/tapes in the can, don’t need much editing, and perhaps Norman has a contract so not charging them full hourly rates, so guessing there’s still good profit for tapes that were just sitting around and considered commercially useless BITD.
I think Ian makes a good point that part of this may be for us to fund the digitization of the collection whether for some specific reason and/or historical archiving.
Remember when the whole terrapin station museum was a thing with that fine 3/15/90 release to supposedly raise funds…and specifically Mickey saying they wanted to digitize the collection so there’d be a kiosk that you could order up any show on the way in and pick it up on the way out. But that led to the public blowup after Mickey saying Phil got the liver of a jerk because he didn’t want to give all their rights/ownership away and hear Truckin’ every time a Chevy commercial came on, just to cover the large digitization cost.
So maybe their getting two birds stoned with one joint as TPB Ricky would say, in that they get things digitized, we pay for it, and they get paid doing so, and we get fine, cleaned up shows…
As far as rocket science, 24K was selling just fine until the tax scare went down (thanks to DV for explaining all that). So that, and let’s face it, none of us is getting any younger, so losing some folks, and others perhaps interest is waning and/or some are saturated enough. Mix in some lesser grade shows and yeah, it’s not rocket science…but again, if they were happy with 12K, anything above that should be bueno.

It's always feels good when I mention a band on here and someone follows up - so good on you ! The amount of bands and musicians who have been recorded, but who we haven't heard yet must be infinite.
Elephant in the Room?
Is it me, or did that first “game” have more BS questionable calls in one game then I’ve perhaps ever seen watching sports for over six decades?
Sure there have been single horrible calls that have been more dramatic or impacted the outcome of a game, but from start to end, seemly nonstop, especially every time H seemed to have a nice play. FFS! Disgusting!
No offense to any fans, it’s not your fault it’s fixed…
By comparison, I don’t think I noticed any calls in the late game until well in the third quarter, and it was correct and non controversial!
It’s disgusting, the NFL has reached new new lows of blatant greed and corruption! The players have no discipline: can you name any other job that pays as well but doesn’t require you to master the basics of the game, it’s just about look at me and showboating.
But that second game, yowsa, that’s the shit!
I’ve been rooting for the underdog underrated Commandos since last year, just like the Lions before they became a big deal, so I knew Washington would go all Commado lol and have a chance, but figured D would ultimately win, or if not, Washington would only scrape by at the end…wow, didn’t see that coming. And if either of these REAL teams would have played the Chefs, the refs wouldn’t have been able to throw enough flags to overcome the slaughter.
