Finally... had the chance to watch the blu-ray on an extreme high end 5.1 home theater set up. I knew the incremental improvement to the video, however the audio quality on a system capable of such resolution was outstanding, kudos to those involved with remastering that. We do not have enough high quality video from pre hiatus days.

Too much going on yesterday so rewind on the 9 and of course ya can’t stand on just one leg lol
Good working music…putting some cabs and shelving in laundry hall

Yes, the Blue Ray from 2005 is outstanding. Also love the added DVD with bonus footage, interviews, etc

Not sure if there is anything else out there before 1974, that hasn't come out already. The 72 partial Denmark show and the Sunshine daydream release.

Would be great if there is something else out there.

Onward to the 2nd set - adding in the sublime Morning Dew from the next night in Santa Barbara.

aka the bonus disc from the New Years Eve 1976 Live at the Cow Palace. At Oro's suggestion sort of. It has two songs off the latest release! The Let it Grow > Might as Well. Likely have not played this CD since I got it BITD I'm guessing. A bounty of treasures on that shelf.

I'm seeing this was a Dave trial balloon or sampler of sorts as all the selections have been released in later incarnations of Road Trips and Dave's Picks. Includes 6-9-76, 10-2-76, and 9-24-76 (this Playin'>Supplication>Playin' is cool!).

to the capitol theater in passaic NJ
for some FUN
@ the trips festival
with ZERO & SOUNDS of SAN FRANCISCO
and KINGFISH with BOBBY

I remember we got a very memorable early version of
"victim or the crime" acoustic solo by Bob
and a very cool "easy to slip"
this was the only time I got to watch
John Cipollina play guitar
and I remember the light show was really cool also

I played this one yesterday. A Rocket to the Moon. I always miss off Hey Jude at the end, though. Maybe I should give it another go - I might be pleasantly surprised. Although it's not a song I like, generally. Apart from the Wilson Pickett version with that blistering solo by Duane Allman.

So IMO, no DaveRock you're not missing much ... Stick with Wilson Pickett and Carry on.

This afternoon was February 3, 1978, Dane County Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin. Makes me want to jump back into the Friend of the Devils box. Jerry has a more brittle but 'grabbier' tone than '77, which I assume is from trading the Travis Beam out for Wolf? Either way, the dissonance is a little spookier, ghostlike. Works great in the space segments.

Fivebranch - going off photographs and sound, it seems Jerry started using the Wolf in Fall 1977. I agree - a much hotter sound than that of 1976 and the first half of 1977.

3/24/95 yesterday: not bad, JG muffs a couple vocals but plays well and seems good overall. Can’t believe how many late era shows don’t have SBs?
JC must have not been giving board patches?

Many/most that I’ve heard that are labeled ‘SBD’ are actually ear monitor.
I read years ago that the ear monitors were run by a separate soundboard on side stage which is why you can hear the band members talk to each other.
I don’t think that they sound as good as a true ‘SBD’.
I suspect that the true SBD’s do exist, due to the ease at the time of just recording to a HD, and they are being withheld.

A lot to do today!
3/17/95 currently
3/18&19/95 Shlater…

RE: Late era SBs…
I’m guessing John Cutler wasn’t letting folks patch in direct for whatever reason. I would certainly assume they made recordings.
I.e., Like the DATs used for the released DaPs…
Yeah, Harry Popick, the longtime monitor guy (at big mix desk left of Phil) might have been eventually delegated to making recordings? That would make it less likely for direct feeds to tapers…I’m guessing he must have had a master mix for guests or himself (he can hear any of the mixes individually or any combination) since the individual musician mixes were custom, which often did not include all the other musicians and definitely would have had things in their mix at different levels so a feed like that would probably sound pretty goofy to a civilian? i.e., smidge of kick drum, low bass, loud vocals, yours a tad louder, JG, no Vinny…you can customize it any way you like.
Now if someone had a comprehensive, balanced mix, THAT, could sound good, but in my experience, most musicians don’t want everything, or certain things up in their mix, if in it at all.
BITD we didn’t have in ears, so you often would just put certain things in your floor monitor mix, since you’d still hear most of the instruments etc from their amps (and often the PA) I mostly had vocals, a little kick drum, and any acoustic instruments I couldn’t other wise hear. It gets easily cluttered up so you learn to use just what you really need. But they of course were on a whole different level utilizing dozens of channels all custom mixed to their preferences.
Very interesting though? We’ll have to learn more about it.
There definitely are monitor mixes on arch labeled as SBs, but you’d have to think they have better stuff than that in the vault.
PLUS!, remember, this is the digital age now and folks were starting to bring in some serious digital gear by the end…so I can see the band not allowing direct hi res board feeds to such gear, which you could only really guarantee by not having any direct feeds. Pesky DH pranksters would find a way given the opportunity lol
Berry interesting…

Oh, yeah they had a talk feature so they could communicate verbally if need be, which since certain individuals didn’t have everyone in there mix could be helpful,., it was fun when occasionally that would accidentally get into the main PA mix and we’d hear it out front.

Heck, just another day of squabbling over policy, eh? Oh... you mean DOA types, not actually intra-office conflict, my bad...

So I had to look back at the setlists for
The Byrds Sweetheart of the Rodeo (rec'd March-May 1968)
The Byrds Live at the Fillmore (Feb 1969) and
Gram Parson's Flying BBs @ Avalon (April 1969)

Looks like Sweetheart has You're Still On My Mind (Luke McDaniel) as do the Byrds and FBB live sets. A year later in their live sets, both the Byrds and FBBs were playing Close Up the Honky Tonks, as well. Huh, thought I'd see more overlap. The Byrds in early '69 were pretty sharp edged with their brand (Turn, Turn, Turn, Eight Miles High, So You Want to Be a Rock 'n Roll Star, etc) and the co-written (McGuinn/Parsons) Drug Store Truck Drivin Man, while GP and the FBBs went full-on country with Dark End of the Street, Undo the Right, You Wiin Again, She Once Lived Here, but added their special sauce, Hot Burrito #1 and #2, Lulcille (Little Richard!). Real nice harmonies by both bands.

What's my point? Always the question! Just interesting to see the McGuinn thread weave with the Parsons thread and then how they went their ways afterwards. Guess I need to explore the earlier Byrds studio albums for the pre-Gram piece of the puzzle. Probably only heard a few singles on AM radio at the time. BTW, the Byrds live recording is pretty darn good, but Owsley's tape of Gram's FBB is warmer, more detailed. (And OOP.)

FYI: The Slim Harpo live disc I mentioned the other day is from 1961 and its incredible (1 of 5 discs in the Bear Family box). You're in the room as a crowd is partying and after a raucous dance set Slim brings out When the Saints Go Marching In as a sing-along. Another world, another time, but the recording takes you there.

Lastly, got the two-disc Dylan of Though the Open Window, figuring that'd be enough. Well, Disc One is so good that I up and ordered the 8-disc version.

Gotta immerse myself as the days get shorter (Dec. 21 is coming, a big day each year for me) and facism rages seemingly unchecked.

Rambling on a Monday morning, HF

Woke up at 3, had gotten a booster yesterday and feel like I've been run over by a truck. Unfortunately, I can't stay home; there are four homicides at my office, and I have to take care of at least two. Welcome to my world...............

Thanks to our resident Shredder Extraordinaire for the shout out, you're a good man Charlie Brown..............

A nice chunk of 2/8/70 was played at deadnet late last month, do they have the rest? Would love to hear a high quality copy of that entire Dark Star.......

I usually don't pick my commute music until I'm in that shower. Been going back through early 1972 AOM and early 1970, great stuff. Maybe I should go take that shower now..........

Dipped into 6-19-76 and it was more uptempo and raw than I recall, at least Disc 2. That PitB is quite excellent not particular "76" if you catch my drift. Then on a whim I skipped ahead to "High Time" and at ~9 minutes, it was not just flawless but heartfelt. Very much a JGB vibe as are many of the slower tempo songs in that month of re-launching. I'd credit Jer for rehearsing the band's harmonies (actually, he'd been working with Donna and Keith in JGB) and insisting on modest venues to get the groove back on.
Then I caught The Byrds live at Fillmore West June '69 and wondered whether they did some overdubbing -- sure didn't sound like one pedal steel, one electric guitar. Anyway, excellent stuff and I want to go back to McGuinn pre-Gram Parsons to sort out the influences. Finally, a live disc of Slim Harpo that really topped it all off. Musta been very early '60s, will correct later. Cheers to the Doctor of '71.

    Paz, HF
