I think the mix JC had with the boards from 94-95, to my ears, sound fantastic. It doesn't seem many are in circulation but the "true" boards that are have a very "clean" mix, IMHO. I really wish the great spring 1993 tour was recorded in this way, but alas they werent. Also, I thinnk the drums/space segment from shows really showcase the potentail of this particular recording process. Mickey and Billy were some real MVP's in those final two years of the band

Just my 2 cents

Rock on, gang!

Hopefully another DHB today!

Edit: 22 was nice, but the 23 JG seems to be really enjoying ole Brucey helping out!

Uncle T: love that show! Lotso good sheet on fall 91…oh David?

Jonathan: agree, Cutler made things sound very clean, facilitated by removing all the speakers off stage and isolating the drums. His mix on ITD to me is the sound of the Grateful Dead. His recordings are pristine…BUT!!…no offense, we always thought his live mix in person was way too quiet.
People used to hassle him about it too.
I preferred Healy in the hall, but Cutler on tape…but hey, just my two centavos from someone who’s stereo could be heard two houses away…with all the windows closed lol. Those were the days, thought R&R was never gonna die…

Minglewood sure comes out swinging! And that lucky/joyful wave (dopamine? heh-heh) that we all seek hit me as Jerry lifted off in the Sugaree. 1st set is strong all the way through the super-powered Lazy Lightning > Supplication closer. It's certainly among the best versions I know of ...

X-factor: The mid section jam in Eyes is long and uniquely detailed, with Phil and Keith weaving some magic tones in and around the drummers as Bobby holds the center down and Jerry flits and dances creatively over the top of it all.
(edit: They definitely find some more of this in the middle of The Other One also)

Now on to Drums > Other One etc. - through Brokedown ...
Always worth a listen 🎶 😊

Cool story:
My uncle was part of the crew that built the stage and helped unload the Dead's gear that day - and for other bands over '73-'74, (which I'm pretty sure included the Allman Brothers) ... I thought perhaps he was the tall guy with dark hair and mini pony tail just to the left of the dude wearing the top hat in the first pic within the HCS box booklet (he's tall and wore his hair kind of like that, etc) ...

But he tells me that instead, he was able to watch the 5.13 show from the side of the stage that day (!) and did the same set up gig for the epic 6.16.74 WoS show at the same location (!!)

I lucky to be in the Spectrum when the boys broke out Unbroken Chain. A truly incredible moment. With that being said, during Crazy Fingers I thought Jerry might just fall directly through his mic and off the stage. Very strange/scary feeling. Its funny though, i"ve listen to that show and the Crazy Fingers is not as bad as I seem to remember, funny how that works.

Another amazing thing is the Visions Of Johanna from the night before is a stone-cold classic performance by the big guy!

I was there, and got an Unbroken Chain.
Also got a Take Me To The River, as we were on the banks of the Mississippi.

Jerry throws in an extra “but I try” on Crazy Fingers.

I’ve listened to the recordings many times. Probably biased because I was there, but I think that they are good shows for the era.

This run has some nice moments. The Alabama to open 3/19 has a pretty fired up Garcia, he even throws in a Alabama!!!! after one of the verses

Followed by Bill Evans Box: Everybody Still Digs Bill Evans

Usually wait until I’m finished with the tour to compare, but since y’all been having a nice convo…
Knew nothing of early 95 going in. Hadn’t even hit the Boxilla show.
Have heard plenty of negative hype, but one thing I’ve learned chasing all these shows is usually, nothing is as good or bad as the hype declares…
So mostly, been pleasantly surprised, until Omni shows, where unfortunately the weird, glitch like inconsistency’s have started to be a regular phenomenon.
We only saw the cool Pittsburgh “rain” show, and the last 2 in chi town.
Same phenomenon, only more pronounced and often, but same reactive feelings: WTF? Like how could he do a pretty fine job here on the 30 of Visions, then be so bad on LSD? Just one example, but with no viewing, listening only, it’s so weird, one minute he’s fully there, five minutes later he’s not, sad….still breaks my heart : (
But besides a couple good vocal flubs during one of the Oakland or Philly shows, (sorry, forgot to note them?) not much out of the ordinary percentage wise, as far as blunders. On the other hand, been lots of well played and even big moments on the tour so far. The first Salt Lakes were decent, followed by a very enjoyable show that David used for Boxilla, including a nice Visions of Johanna, first one since the two in 86. By some weird cosmic swirl we were fortunate to have witnessed the first on 3/19/86 and the last one on 7/8/9.
But lots of other highlights, and overall I’d say good batting average.
Standouts so far, have been 2/21, 3/18, and the very fine outing on 3/23!
Also enjoyed were the first nights from Oakland, Philly, and Charlotte. The rest, decent, but…
But by Atlanta, things have clearly changed. Again, not as horrible or phenomenal as some reviews out there, but the WTF? to well played ratio is most definitely going south…I could list more examples of both, but I think ya get the drift, and folks need to listen and form their own thoughts…
Promising to hear there’s still some positive vibes to be had, (thanks for recommendations guys) so, if I don’t get JD 🤞mañana, we’ll be off to the Mid!
Onward!

Yeah the 4th is an aud, but luckily no chatter.
Shows not bad at all? Can’t believe how many “reviews” call this worst ever…FFS. I’m so over the internet in that every idiot can just regurgitate some BS they read online…so it must be true! This is why our country is phucked: no critical thinking at all, just monkey see, monkey do. Is it FW 69, of course not their 26 years older and have constantly progressed/changed, but it’s far from worst ever! In fact, both these Bama shows so far (5th End of first) are far more consistent than the Atlanta shows, though not as “on” perhaps as the Mid?
I mean if I would have saw the 5th, (either really)I would have enjoyed it, though probably grumbled about not catching DS, Unbroken etc lol (picky ass DH).
I’m just so perplexed by folks “opinions”…and I blame all this tech and more specifically the misuse of it. It’s not supposed to replace thinking, but that seems to be what’s happened in the last thirty years…how bout, just listen to a show WITHOUT reading reviews etc, and actually critically listen, not get hung up on what year it is, the recording quality, or what some dipshit says online…if ya get confused just LISTEN to the music play!…ok, sorry, rant over lol
Hey kid, git off my lawn! ; )
Yep, GD 101, nothing is usually as awesome or horrible as the sheep say!

4/1&2: These we’re back on track after Atlanta, with the first night decent, not a ripper, but more consistent etc. The second night was very nice, I’d say in the ballpark with 2/21, 3/18, and 3/23. Conekid scores!

Stumbled across something/place/show called "2 Meter Sessions". Looks like a Dutch tv show with musical people.

Anyhow, youtube had a playlist of 476 cuts from this show. All studio quality. I grabbed them all, but I thought this would make a nice background sound when people are over.

I think i searched for 2 meter sessions.

Throwing it out there.

A couple weeks ago friend linked 2 meter Sessions #461 with JJ Cale - good stuff!! Will have to take a deeper dive in what's available.

Listening to 5/16/81 (Disc 1 - Barton Hall from Porch Crusher #1). Edit - fun listen - had forgotten that SBD source ends after the Nobody's Jam and its an audience from Stella Blue through the UJB encore.

:) that's what I got right now.

Oro,
Can you give us a rundown of your favorites of '95 when you are done?
I only got to see the Grateful Dead in '94 and '95, I have always thought that the tapes aren't all that bad and a lot of people never bothered to listen to them, some of it is quite nice.
There was a time when a few older heads would be down right mean to me about it, telling me "you didn't see the Grateful Dead"

More of the same: it’s not fall 73, but mostly pretty dern good and JG has been consistent and more energetic than some previous from the year!
So far, only the atlanta shows would have been a disappoint.

Will do Joey. Though it may be a bit as I may switch gears for while and do the final death tour later…chever way, I’ll try to report back asap!

“Joey, Joey, what made them come and blow you away”
Unfortunately there can be some tribalism within our culture just like elsewhere. And I’m sure you can understand some of this just from hanging out on dnet. etc…it’s cool folks dig what they dig, but some seem obsessed with proving what THEY like is best! I don’t compare apples to oranges so I find good sheet everywhere, I mean it is the dang nam GD!
Don’t let anybody influence what you dig! My advice is always to not read online crap until after I listen, if at all, “if you get confused just listen to the music play”, not the “noise”!
Ok, onto 5/21…

DaP 16, CD 3…most definitely in my top ten single best discs of all time!

Great sound and performance, from the start to the finish - as are all three of the DK shows from this tour.

Note: I was fortunate enough to visit this venue, albeit briefly, some 9 years on from this show - along with the amusement park around it more extensively, while on an exchange program. I stayed with the family (of Lars) Rasmussen, and a man of that name eventually became the prime minister of Denmark (!) ... But visually he bears just a passing resemblance to the young man I knew there. It's a common name; I guess it's possible that it is/was him.

I recall it was an amazingly happy and calm, free and safe place. Many folks welcomed me into their home and took gracious care for my good experience/s. We two teenagers could ride the train into Copenhagen and explore really - anywhere - at that time. He showed me all the standard tourist spots of course, along with the less heralded (cool) locales. We went to Aarhus and out to Odense by bus as well. And so, I will always have a fondness for most everything/everyone Danish, and all the good things they bring to the world.

I like to think that a bunch of their fine spirit shines through (channeled by the GD) greatly in both this show and in Aarhus, along with the 3rd date that features the television broadcast.

Prost!

Providence, RI - another show from the 30 Trips Porch Crusher. The night before at the Spectrum is part of the 60 Years Box.

Very very fine Let It Grow to close Set I. Unusual jammed out intro into Samson to start Set II - cool beans! Edit - a seriously fun Set II!! Wowza!! Edit 2 - had so much fun last night I'm circling back at dawn to Disc 2 with Set II through Rhythm Devils. The boys are lit - a firing-on-all-cylinders show. Jerry had an extra couple of sips of root beer. The delicate Jerry outro for Eyes > Rhythm Devils is very cool and I dig this early iteration of "Drumz".

In Celebration -
Because today would have been/is Phil's 85th Birthday.

(4.27.85 crowd)
We want Phil! ... WE WANT PHIL!

"Hey, we all want Phil ...
(elicits several chuckles)

Mickey, I think: "Well you can't have him - He's ours!!"

... Jerry: "We're gonna hang onto him for a while. "
We love you, Phil

Great show and there is an excellent Healy Ultramatrix source mastered by Charlie Miller. Sweet spot mix to my ears including Phil loud and clear. Crowd just bit there, more of a hint then feeling like you're actually in the audience (except during Drumz where it feels a bit more out in the crowd but still just about exactly perfect.) I've said it before and I'll say it again - this show should be released.
Edit - on this listen through it seemed the vocal mix got a little muddy by post-drums, more distortion, and the audience was a bit more present - still a great listen but mix not quite in the sweet spot it seemed to be at start Set II.

Seem to drag a bit at times and more subdued? Some cool jams though, and first time I’ve seen GL play bass, and Big Brown no less! He’s ok, but I think I prefer him on guitar?

5/24/95 currently…Bird Song, so far so good…

I wore that 86 River Bend tape. I had started to get the tape collection going pretty good. Had the River Bend tape with a week to 10 days of the show. Also enjoyed the Rubber Bowl show as we got tapes fast. Also received the Greek shows about as quickly and enjoyed all three but wore out summer soltice as it had a nice smokestack. I have written before about my Pig-smoke. It was Pig's rendition on Bear's choice that sunk the hock in this phish's mouth.

    All such a blur?
Have always remembered River Bend as being one of my top @ Shows.
Maybe getting decent inside seats for the only time influenced a little?
Definitely think ya had to be there!
It’s deceptively excellent. Even, well played, sorta laid back mid-west vibe, building solos up nicely versus the more forced? manic stadium shows of the time.
It’s a shame there’s not a better source for the full show.
History/memory of course is a fickle mistress, but my recollection was of a large barge rollin by (really close behind the amp on the Ohio river) during Big River, and an old Mississippi River Paddle boat during Ship of Fools, and that the crowd reacted appropriately. But I can’t hear it on the Aud? The fact that I recall something so specific tells me I’m correct, if not fully accurate! Man we really foraged in the fungal forest this tour, hell all year, so ya know, shit gets funny lol Seem to also recall a LOT of fireworks after the show.
Next memory is pulling into Nazareth feeling about half past dead….or in reality Akron Rubber bowl. I swear I remember burning tires or some such weird ominous energy as we drove in, adding to a muggy overcast kinda day, but who knows? It definitely was muggy, and seemed really overcrowded in front of the SB etc…and we were kinda of understandably burnt by tgen, that running on manufactured energy at some point quits feeling good.
My recollection of the show was it was one of the most lack luster shows I saw, but the one time I’ve heard it I didn’t think it was that bad? We shall see soon…certainly set/setting played a part with this one. For sure a huge setting let down after the awesome Riverbend experience!
Thought Dylan coming out was gonna be cool, but it didn’t really work, think luckily Jer kept it from totally falling apart?
Then it was back to Bu faf which after sleeping hard in own bed and resting up was big fun. Like some of the other stadium gigs, maybe a bit forced etc, but good energy and ya had to be there when the sky/clouds opened up and let a direct shaft of sunlight on Jer during Fire!
Went solo but met up with different folks, including Phinster who you can see us in the video, especially if you’ve ever seen the non broadcast one of the first set. There’s just one camera mostly static I think, at the SB, and we’re just below it in the bottom mid right of the screen. I’ll have to look this up on Tubes of you this WE…
But I walked out to a main road and got picked up without even trying, immediately by a buddy, not going, but took me a few miles outta his way and dropped me off right in front of Rich Stadium, or the Ralph as it was known locally. First of five mostly good shows there.
Petty/Dylan was decent, but quite the juxtaposition and let down after the boys.
After, I wandered the lots and ended up hanging with this really kind, beautiful gal who was trying to get a ride to the Rainbow gathering, so being a road warrior in those days and thinking it was in Allegheny State park (not too far away) instead of much farther Allegheny National Forest down in Pennsitucky. So mr Bright idea gets a quick ride home, where I had recently moved back to, borrowed the family car as I didn’t have one, and proceeded to give the young lady a ride…well, didn’t find out the mistake until we arrived at the State park with not a freak in sight. That’s when the lightbulb went off about the National Forest…
By now it’s getting very late, but I can’t just leave her in the middle of nowhere, so kept going until, luckily, we ran into some travelers on their way there at some all night gas store.
She gave me a big hug and a kiss and an awesome tape from 85 Red Rocks!
Ok, not great situation, but figure I’ll fill the tank back up mañana and, well,, Opps, forgot the old man had to go to work so as I pull in well after dawn, there he is standing in the driveway and non too happy lol as he’s just about late for work!
Luckily, the old man RIP was always fairly cool, and it did lead him to give me a small loan to by my awesome 73 LTD with 30K original miles from a guy he knew. Man that car was awesome and went on to hit dozens of shows over the years until I had to junk it in 92 due to rust etc. When I took it to the JY, the guy asked if it still ran, to witch I reached inside, turned the key and started her up, what a car! I miss it like a good dog or friend!
    Man what a year!
Folks like generalize about JG and the drugs and how horrible he was etc, but it’s not accurate. Yeah he looked terrible, but if you see past all the BS and listen, he plays consistently well, not necessarily stratospheric 72, 77, GOAT, but often good, and I haven’t heard “the voice” yet this year, though there were a few shows he suffers from the ole vocal flubs, but not much, and when didn’t he?
No I think it’s more like Bob related in a semi resent interview: the guy just unfortunately took horrible care of himself. Diet, smoking, lack of exercise alone would do it, so not a shock he ended up with major diabetic troubles, we perhaps were just too young/dumb to realize such things BITD? No I think the drug problems are overblown in the context of over all health, to the unfortunate point where I’ve read folks who just categorically write off the year without objective consideration of just the music. But hey, that’s just me and I’m sure there’s folks who’ll disagree, which is fine, but too bad…

I ordered the PPV back on 1989-06-21, Summer Solstice show. I still have the video tape. It was a great show. As many heads agree that I have spoken with, wish it could have been Brandford instead of Clarence but still awesome. Phil thunders on the opening of Estimated. I am sure I have watched it on youtuber, but not certain. Always wished they would release that as an official release "View from the Vault." Not sure why they didn't include it as a bonus in the "All the year's combine" box. Was speaking to another poster friend about this very topic last weekend.

For me an awesome day, after being semi-retired, I am now considering full blown retirement. Unfortunately, related to health issues. But being in the deep south, to look out and see blue sky is awesome. With the gulf to the south, we usually have many gray days, akin to Seattle. And starting the day out as a green day with tasty coffee and listening to some tasty music is fine indeed. Just finished listening to the new Brother Cain album, it will be released tomorrow. It is exceptional if you like hard southern rock. Right now have on ABB at the Beacon March 27, 2009. Has some great guests. This afternoon (?), tonight March 21, 1981 - Dave's#56. Sweetest green day.

    Hopefully more l8tr
