8/17/91 Shoreline
The second set 8/17/91 is IMHO one of the best sets of Grateful Dead music I’ve ever heard! I know every note and it never fails to “take” me there!!
Epic Morning Dew…. Garcia singing with absolute emotion and Hornsby turning in some amazing work as well
Gonna bust this out!!
Dave’s #50 bonus disc
Played this last night and it really hit the spot. Very inspired playing!
This Estimated Prophet is probably my “most of the time” favorite
Kirk to bridge...
Rahsaan would have to be a firm top 5 favourite Jazz artist @chez Cole, esp. from Inflated Tear through Other Folk's Music. Played "Dog Years in the Fourth Ring" all the way through today - a great core sample from the early 60s to mid-75.
Kezar 5.26.73
Such a great recording (pretty sure it's by Betty) ... up there for best of the year - with Keith and Bill really clear/up front, more so than many other dates > although Kid Candelario's are often excellent in the late winter and along the way in '73 as well.
The energy is stellar all the way through - with all players contributing with gusto. Put that together with the fidelity quotient (above), and you get an all-time favorite.

3/24/73 Spectrum
I couldn't resist, I listened to this one a lot when the Dave's Pick was released. #32
I love how loud and clear Bob's guitar is.
After this I'll get into something completely different before #54 comes :)
3/24/73 & Other Shows
Great release. I'd take the momentum from Philly and listen to Baltimore back to back. Each is a great compliment to the other that venues you used to be able to drive to in about an hour and a half. RIP Philly Spectrum.
Not sure if anyone has noticed.. and it's not my thing at all, but pleasant to listen to. If anyone has SiriusXM they have been airing this segment called "Fan-voted Top 30 Grateful Dead concerts" lately. It's kind of tacky yet I have found myself getting completely sucked into some of these shows.
I have caught both 10/8/89 (the other Warlocks show) and 5/3/72 this week plus a couple others that I had not hit in a while. Shows that have gotten multiple listens over the years and as a result are often overlooked as I seek a road less travelled.
I guess they polled listeners or something so there's no surprises on the shows selected. But these shows are highly regarded for a reason. Good fun and put a smile on my face on an otherwise cloudy day.
right now
the 5/26 Kezar jam
earlier some Rahsaan Roland Kirk - I could find The Inflated Tear but Dog Years in the Fourth Ring eluded me. Thanks Kate_C.
earlier still some Thelonious Monk w/ Johnny Griffin - Complete Live at the 5 Spot 1958. Want to revisit this later today.

So, I finished up 3/24/73, I…
So, I finished up 3/24/73, I forgot how great that Playing In The Band is! If I were to make a list of my favorite PITBs that one would be pretty high up.
I had wanted to get back to my Early 80's spring time releases but I felt like I owed #53 another go, this time I put the actual disc in the tower before I put it away for a while :)
Edit: I saw the SiriusXM poll on Facebook, you got to pick five shows from a predetermined list, I wrote in a couple of my own, there were some great ones missing, and I'm not voting for Cornell.. HA. I forgot all about it though...
Jim, I may take that advice when #54 comes and play them together, I try not to get over saturated in a year when there is a new one coming out from that same time.
Taking in 7.19.74 today ...
In keeping withe birthday show theme > Therefore next I'll be going back to Santa Fe 9.11.83 (Mickey's) for a dose of something different before the new DaP shows up.
Also definitely going to hit Philly (& perhaps Springfield?) in conjunction with Baltimore ... So much great music!
Other items: Jim, check PM. Thanks
Recent > U2: Achtung Baby! (pretty awesome - also happens to be something musical my esposa and I agree on) & Ditto, but completely different: Gregory Allan Isokof (sp?) ... Tones for a very mellow Sunday morning (yesterday), with coffee.
Family Nonsense
yep, some kind of issue before that was worked out, DZ apparently can't use the Zappa Plays Zappa tag now for some odd reason but music last night was all Frank with a Bon Jovi break out, though they have worked out some new arrangements intro and outros. Still using the Roxy SG that was his father's guitar but the Lyre trem is gone and the pups look different. Better than ever, solos just burned, Montana and Cosmik esp. SQ was perfect, loud but clean. Sported by Dweezil's sweetheart wife Megan for this show after she learned I missed another show due to ice storm. Listened to 7/8/78 on Serious on ride back to Vermont today
Ridin' with Red Rocks
Did I hear my name? My ears are buzzing.
No wait. That's the amps before the 2nd set!
Good road trip tunes.

2/27/69. A Classic
2/27/69 is in my top 5 of Grateful Dead shows. The Dark Star is the Dark Star that all other Dark Stars are measured against.
3/24/73 - perhaps a few days early or a few days late
depending on how you look at it
or maybe just exactly perfect
np - Row Jimmy
omfg - Bobby's guitar intro on LLR (a gorgeous version)

more on 3/24/73
That was a fun listen!! Thanks JoeyMC - it was your comment about how good that Playing was that had me wanting to drop the needle (so to speak) and listen to the whole show and not just jump in at the jam like I am occasionally want to.
At some point, I think in Disc 2, I had the thought that there were 2 different mixes/sources being used. I checked the liner notes and both Rex Jackson and Kidd Candelario are credited for recording the show. So it would seem both were running decks. The HCS Box was the first time I was aware that it was fairly common to have 2 (or more?) crew members recording a show in '73. Under the recording credit for 3/24/73 is an entry: "10" tapes provided through the assistance of ABCD Enterprises, LLC." ABCD being the folks who orchestrated the return of the Betty Boards. But Betty isn't credited here, rather its credited to Rex who seemingly was running a deck with 10" reels. It struck me as odd - not sure I've seen anything returned by ABCD that wasn't credited to Betty herself but then again its not something I've paid strict attention to. I'd like to see a song by song breakdown on which source was used throughout this show. I don't have detailed listening notes cause that would have been too much work, but to my ageing brain at least, one of the 2 sources had some incredible nuance in the mix and I'm wondering who pulled it. And of course my ears could be just making stuff up. Anyhoo - fun stuff. The Sing Me Back Home right up there with Veneta. Listening to the pre Dark Star jam again right now - it is a beauty.
edit - Charlie Miller upload of 3/24/73 credits 10" tapes to Betty not Rex and another non-CM transfer of Betty reels mentions that first reel for show was unusable because of mold and water damage.
'73 Tapes
Bluecrow
I'm happy you went back and dug it. :)
While listening to 3/24/73 I noticed the change in sound, and I just assumed it was a patch, and not really thinking about that fact that it was another board, which it is...
Now, in the HCS box seaside chat video Dave talks about having multiple board sources to choose from, Bear, Betty, and Rex? not Kidd?
This seemed nuts to me, I always wanted to ask someone like Gans maybe, ya know if Betty or Bear is pulling tape why does anyone think they need to? Like with everything going on its just strange that multiple members would be running decks like that...
Edit: I don't know how many sources per show, probably two depending on the show, but he did have more than one source between three people over the course of those 5 shows, I think...
EDIT: Ok, it was probably on the Deadcast where Dave discusses the sources because I don't think it's the "office Chat"
OK LAST ONE: if you go to about the 8 minute mark in the Daves 32 "riverside chat" Dave explains the sources a little, the 10" 3/24/73 reels did go back somehow with the Betty stuff.
11/14/73 San Diego
from 30 Trips - a Kidd Candelario recording
Big Railroad opener??!!
thanks J-MC for tracking down those references
edit - listening to the China > Rider and in the initial transition jam Weir is soloing as per usual for the era - he's in left channel (which is where he's been) but then quickly switched to hard center with Jerry over to left channel in Weir's previous slot. As soon as Weir's solo ends, another hard switch with Jerry returned to center and Bob back to left channel. Is that a source switch or is Kidd simply dialing in his preferences on the fly mixing on what he wants to hear right then and now as opposed to a straight soundboard or house mix with no goofing around?? I'm guessing it's Kidd and that there are some nuances to the boards - as in they're literally shifting the soundstage on the fly as to what their ears want to hear. Thoughts?? Hard evidence?? Thinking it has to be obvious if you're working with the reels but has anyone seen a real discussion re this sort of thing?? Thought about this for a good while as to possible radical mix changes on the fly in the 73/74 era but first time posting about it.

Highlights need not be mentioned. The whole show is just so well played over and over again and again. Best listened to straight through.
And a great example of how synchronous the band played on this tour. Its not that the ideas just keep pouring out from everyone, but that they keep landing into the music so well. Really magical stuff going on.
4/16/78, 10/28/84
So far at least this would be my pick for the best of the box. TBF I haven't listened exhaustively, but this is the one I keep coming back to.
Speaking of shows I come back to, I'm about to fire up 10/28/84.

11/14/73 & 4/16/78
continuing on my 11/14/73 query - C Miller 2008 upload of 11/14/73 SBD has Weir shifting to center and Garcia to left during Weir solo out of China Cat. The only circulating audience, a mono recording, doesn't seem to reflect any change in the PA. So it looks as if Kidd was indeed occasionally dramatically shifting instrument position in his reel mix to suit personal taste. I've noticed that sort of move in other shows and assumed it was a patch but now it seems that in some instances at least its simply Kidd mixing it up (so to speak).
Totally agree on 4/16/78 - awesome show.
Weir guitar shift China > Rider
In these examples Garcia isn't traded out and switched left like in 11/14/73. Rather, it seems that Weir is simply layered on in the center. To my ear it gets a little crowded at times.
Salt Lake City 2/28/73, a Kidd tape, DiP 28. Weir's guitar shifts from left to center during his lead out of China Cat ~3.40 to 4.20.
Des Moines 5/13/73, a Kidd tape (HCS Box). Weir's guitar shifts left to center during his lead out of China Cat ~3.34, don't really hear it shifting back in this example even well into Rider. Unrelated there appears to be a source patch on the opening chorus of Rider.
UCSB 5/20/73 - a Kidd tape (HCS Box). Weir's guitar shifts from left to center during his lead out of China Cat ~3.27 - 4.39.
These were first 3 released Kidd sbds that I had at hand and could test. I'm convinced Kidd was doing this on a regular basis on the China > Rider transition - maybe its limited to that. Not sure if its limited to '73. Can't remember which show I first really noticed this (and thought it was a source patch), but sure its not any of these - maybe something in the Winterland '73 box. Upcoming Baltimore DaP 54 is Kidd show.
Edit - listening to 5/13 and between Big River and Bertha Bob strums the opening chords to an old school Dancing (last played 12/31/71) and Billy echoes it on the drums for a sec?!?! Damn - missed opportunity!!
4.17.72 Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen
Anniversary ... The sound and mix are Stellar - It's just a fraction uneven in places (in the first set, perhaps due to the TV production element), but they are very 'dialed' on the syncopation/psychedelic dimension. Here's a special shout out to Keith's playing - which is fantastic and clear.
Bob: "Get your souvenir posters in the lobby, and kewpie (sp?) dolls of all of the band members."
What?! Why didn't my trunk come with kewpie dolls and a poster ?? 😉
The Casey Jones - first song for the TV - is quite Fine, as they go ...
McBride and Happy Bunny Music
Christian was tremendous last night at Dartmouth, his ensemble of young lions (bears?), Ursa Major as well. Thanks to the college for a post concert reception with all the musicians. In case you might wish to pick up any of Bears Sonic Journals, there's a holiday discount right now, use BUNNY20 code at check out for 20% off (Merch Mountain website).
Degüello....
....ZZ Top. A great slab of wax. Gotta mix it up to keep it fresh!
McBride, becoming quite the established star in the jazz world. One of our contemporary greats. 'But Who's Gonna Play the Melody?' with Edgar Meyer is fabulous.
Tivoli April 17, might just be my favorite from the tour. The Cold Rain and Snow opens the show into something as mournful as it is blissful. Really sets the tone. Definitively GD.
Re: 73 Tapes (and Winterland '74, what could have been)
Dave's #13 is perhaps my favorite Dave's Pick (2/14/74) but I was so disappointed to see this get an individual release, much like #25, Berkeley Community Theatre 72, because they ruined what would have been two killer box sets.
BlueCrow, sent you a PM.
6/16/74 Des Moines
Disc 1 of RT Vol 2 No 3. Is it a coincidence that it's a Kidd recording and starts out with China > Rider??
Man do I love this show. Edit - this Playing is one of my all time favorite things ever.
Jim - back at ya.
Checking out the Hults Bruk website for no particular reason.
Edit - how the heck was I not aware that there was a vintage/antique line of axes and hatchets trademarked American Beauty - circular logo with rose at center, American (top) and Beauty (bottom) - made by American Hardware and Supply Co. in Pittsburgh?? My goodness.
5/14/74 Missoula
DaP 9
FTR - Bob was mixed center for 6/16/74 and Kidd did not mess with the mix during China > Rider cause it was already just exactly perfect What a spectacular recording - once again think several of these '74 shows that got released in part need to get plangent and full show release.
Also - I'm thinking the American Beauty logo on those antique American Hardware and Supply Co. (Pittsburgh, PA) axes and hatchets was a direct influence on the cover art for American Beauty. Can anybody point me to some direct discussion of said cover art?
And finally, a tip of the hat to the Cubs and that crazy win over the Diamondbacks. Following the score and I'm like WAT IS HAPPENING??
Have a great weekend everyone.
