When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

I was on the job at an all day presentation that I was video taping, running the camera and recording. I learned about it during a break at 11 am. It was hard for me to concentrate the rest of the day. I felt a big hole in my life. Later friends gathered at our house and we all went over to GG park to join the heads gathering together in grief. There was a large circle of heads on the grass, with lots of candles and pictures of Jerry, and people singing along to guys with guitars and drums.

The day the news of Jerry's death broke, I was starting a new job in a new city and pretty overwhelmed by everything that entailed. I was unpacking boxes, meeting new people, shaking lots of hands and nodding vigorously as my new bosses explained my new duties, and I didn't have much time to think about it.

Until later. That evening there was a gathering of people in the park near my new apartment, so I went down there to listen to the songs and read the signs and try to process the whole thing.

    I'm still processing.

I, too, was surprised by huge public outpouring of grief. My primary show-going years were the late '70s and early '80s, a time when the Dead was widely considered a cult band that was barely relevant to the music biz or mainstream culture. By 1995, I had not been to a show in years, and I didn't realize how big the "cult" had become. But the public reaction to Jerry's death--the front page stories, the mass gatherings, the musical tributes--was a lot like when John Lennon was killed. And that was when it first hit me that the Dead's audience was damn near as big as the Beatles.

And I think it's bigger now than it was then.

TTB was great at Red Rocks, btw. I also traveled up to Bend to visit a friend and caught a show (just one of the two) there. It was super cool to see some of the same folks I had met at RR, some of whom were following TTB through several cities on the current tour. Strangers stopping strangers. High fives, hugs, and other things were exchanged. Reminded me of the olden days, it did.

Well, yesterday actually. I can remember that Jerry's death was reported on the national news and was front page news the following day. Apart from my one Deadhead friend, this surprised everyone else I knew. The Dead obviously were nowhere near as well known in the U.K. as The States, and most of my friends assumed they were just a strange acquired taste of mine. An obscure cult band from the 60's with a very limited following. They didn't know anything about you lot.

One of the second-best things about this music (the music itself being numero uno) is that we all LOVE it, but love it differently. We're all rooting for the same team, but one of us loves this one player, while someone else loves another; one person thinks the 19XX team was the best, while another person is SURE that the 19XX+2 team was the best. But to quote Blues Traveler--it's all in the groove.

Be kind, then rewind.

Good morning rockers!!!

Thoughts on April 1971, the most acidest of months.........

Like May 1977, April 1971 could be split into two boxes. But I'm guessing that they wouldn't necessarily sell too well. Not everybody is a fan, and show to show there's a lot of repeats. I've been asked to consider only one eight show box set, so let's contemplate............

First, leave out the Fillmore East shows. Bits and pieces have been released already, and big chunks are going to be in this new box. Although it certainly would be nice to have the 26th, a super fine show that doesn't get the love that the 28th and 29th get. And, lol, it contains the absolute best, jammiest Good Lovin' and a nicely slunky Hard To Handle.

Next, leave out Duke. Not a bad show, but probably the "most average" of the April shows.

Next, leave out the Manhattan Center shows. These are good shows which would make a nice three show mini box. (I really wish they would adopt this format---one big box and one mini box per year). The 6th especially is nicely weird and ends with a blazing, burn-down-the-house version of Truckin'. Very unusual position for Truckin'.......

So, what's left? Lots of gooey Good Old Grateful Dead goodness............

4/8/71 Boston. Include it for the rare-in-April Dark Star.
4/14/71 Bucknell. Ethereal, otherworldly show. This one does have some sonic issues, not so bad as Scranton.
4/17/71 Princeton. Back in the days of tape trading this achieved classic status, maybe rightfully so due to the choice Pigpen material. I know that not everybody likes Pigpen stuff, but if you don't care for it why are your reading this? LOL,,,,
4/18/71 Cortland. A bit short but it rocks plenty hard.
4/21/71 Providence. Was there something in the water? Super crunchy show, maybe the best non-FE show from April.
4/22/71 Bangor. Similar to Cortland. Short, sweet, hard rocking, and funny. A favorite here............

So, that's only 6 shows. To get to 8 I'd probably include 4/7 and 4/15. Certainly worthy shows..................

In closing, anybody who would like a copy of my work on 1971, drop me a PM. It still needs work and is up to almost 300 pages, so too big to email, would have to use the transfer service.

And finally, if anybody is looking for 1971 live Dead recordings, I might just be able to help you out with that..............

Music is a moral law, it gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.....

Rock on!!!

Looking at the show/set list it's really not that important to me now to buy the whole box. When I only desire 7 shows so no reason to own the others to just take up space. I'll grab them off eBay a few days after release date.

Really enjoying the 71 and 81 discussions. Great to see Doc put out such a narrowly focused summary of April 71. It's got my attention so time to revisit some of these gems with a fresh season and hungry ears.

Gotta admit, Boulder 81 did not captivate me when it came out, although I do remember liking the Chinacat I Know You Rider (and who doesn't). So I'll give that a fresh listen too.

Thanks all.

Howdy Doc,
Thanks for all the info and thoughts on 1971. Hats off to your deep knowledge of the era. I would love to PM for '71 work and more. Please advise? Cheers!

Recorded by Dan Healy and Don Pearson . . . just curious what listeners think. The booklet photo shows a tape box labeled as 2nd generation soundboard. What are we hearing on the DaP discs? The amount of crowd noise/cheering seems especially noticeable (but I need to compare to other releases); was this a deliberate nostalgic choice to max out the ambience of DL2's first show? (It's a great show--saw most of my shows in '87, and pretty sure I did not see one this good). Is this a matrix mix, that fabled combination of direct soundboard feed and open mics above the audience? (Did I get that right?). For contrast, a random drop into Samson on DaP 53, also recorded by Healy, and the sound seems much more clear, immediate, front and center. Any insights? Thanks!

...I thought there was a way to look all that up on this very web site, the Dead's. If not I can tell you a place where I have been referencing Dead shows for awhile now. Its got something to do with Carnegie~Mellon College of Computer Sciences. I can't even remember how I found the web page in the first place but they only have the shows and tours from 1972 onward till 1995. I think a Head put it together, anyways I googled "Grateful Dead Tour-By-Tour: 1974" or another date and it took me to a page where I could look & access the main page with all the years available that I had mentioned.
Anyways, I don't know if this gets 'Hey Nowed' for obvious reasons but I tried to keep it vague.

Good morning Proudfoot, these quotes are for you............

No doubt one may quote history to support any cause, as the devil quotes scripture. The nice thing about quotes is that they give us a nodding acquaintance with the originator which is often socially impressive.

LOL I know, quotes about quotes, Ted Lasso, this could go on forever. Do for this life as if you live forever, do for the afterlife as if you die tomorrow.

Yes I use a lot of quotes, mainly to get people's attention and hey occasionally get people to ponder and wonder about interesting things. Been asked about this many many times, I never pretend to take ownership of such things. Sorry to disappoint. My favorite source is Brainy Quotes. I know, shameless plug for which I'm never compensated. If we will be quiet and ready enough, we shall find compensation in every disappointment.......

The only real progress lies in learning to be wrong all alone......

Rock on!!

Happy St. Helens Day! There was a Dead show in town less than a month after that eruption. Might make for a good Dave pick some day, (wink, wink) maybe?
Anyways I can't wait to dig in to this Big Box, I'm still wondering when the time table might be for arrival. Will it be shipped before release day now that it's sold out? Tree trimming time is right now, irony for me it was a few pre~season digging jobs that helped cover the cost.

I dropped a Dead one on one of my friends, a retired psychologist, last week. We were talking about the choices we make in life ,and why we make them. It suddenly occurred to me - "It's not the real thing, but it's close enough to pretend" from either Saint of Circumstance or Lost Sailor. She thought it was excellent, and could be applied to many things in life that we accept. She asked where it came from. The Grateful Dead, I proudly told her. I think she was expecting it too come from a loftier source. It just goes to show.

Hey RYXS thanks for the reminder! I saw the Dead in Portland that night and experienced the complete dusting of the Rose City right before its big Rose Parade. Excaped in a Dust Blizzard on a Greyhound Bus at 3 in the morning, on my way to Seattle for the next show. Good times!

I'm thinking that when this box drops, there will be so much to talk about, with 20 different shows all at once! Can't wait.

Doesn’t get any loftier than that.
It’s just that most people don’t comprehend it.
Which is why we are the lucky ones.

Thanks for the flashback in time Nitecat! I always enjoy reading those, unfortunately I missed out on that trip. I was too young, only just over 4 & a half years of age at the time. Though I sure remember the ash fall aftermath, it seemed like a weird snow but everyone wore dust masks.
Anyways,.... Back to the Box. Yeah I've been thinking of just that, what shows I will cherrypick first. Got to admit, the 1971 shows from Port Chester & Fillmore East are real temping to start with as well as the 1969 Fillmore West. Mostly 'chop shows' except the one Port Chester gig, but I don't sweat that for the primal era too much. Them are hard to find whole apparently, and any and all are good for me. Truthfully the Nassau 1973 show would be a nice start, and kinda coincides with the latest Dave's Pick release. The 1991 Vince era show I am highly interested in, sounds like a real rocker. Though I also dig that 1993 show with the newer material from the 'lost early'90s' album that was never conceived. That '93 disc also has that 1982 filler I've been jonesing for.
Speaking of Brent's era,... The 1981 shows from Hampton & Hartford I really want to get onto my iTunes, I will probably mix them up all Super 'Chop Show' style. One great big blended double show! The 1983 & 1984, Frost & Greek offerings respectively also perk my ears, so I could start listening there even. Red Rocks 1979 I'm sure is a groover too!
Getting back to Keith & Donna, that 1977 Winterland show is a goodie no doubt and the 1978 Philly gotta be damn fine too!
Wow! How dizzying the thought of it all, and still enjoying the ride.

I took a look at the big box from 10 years ago and there seems to to be a much lager number of "years best show" in that one ; (surely) 68, (likely)75, (likely)82, (maybe)85/86, (surely)89, (maybe)91, (surely)94.. - than in the "kid brother box" - which really just seems to have; (surely)93.. what do you gentlemen think ? How many shows have been released since 2015, 120? 130? I'd argue there's probably a few years' bests in those.

By definition you can only have 30 years' best shows and you've picked 8 from 30 Trips. Probably the vast majority of the remainder have already been released, either before or since 30 Trips, in other forms.

Then it's down to what you consider the years best show. For me, Valentine's Day 1968, that came out as a Road Trip, has yet to be equalled by anything else I've heard from that year. You can debate what the best shows are from each year, but 1970, Harpur College? 1971, Austin or the second night from the Listen To The River Box? 1973, one of the Here Comes Sunshine Shows? 1976, several contenders have already been release as they have for 1977. I'm sure many with far greater knowledge and expertise than I could pick up this argument and, where I've made a choice, disagree with it.

Point is, I'm not sure how many years best shows are left in the vault and anyway would you rather have a years best show from a poor year or the 10th best show from an excellent year?

I would like to see a 70's box, but I don't think that will happen.1970 didn't make it in the ETR box, so that leaves Dave's Picks? June 1970 Fillmore West would make a great four Disc release!

ps, Plus a nice upgrade?!

Guys, why would you hatchet up the greatest '71 shows instead of doing what should be done...release them in their entirety!?! The legendary February '71 shows should have been a box set: 2/18, 2/19, 2/20, 2/21, 2/23 and 2/24 are all epic. Instead of just releasing these epic shows as a 6-show box set, you've made it a treasure hunt to find them and some aren't even complete? To own 2/18, you have to buy the American Beauty 50th Anniversary remastered album. To get 2/19, You have to buy Three From The Vault. To get a hatcheted up morsel of 2/20, you have to buy Enjoying the Ride box (and you're only getting crumbs of this amazing show). To get 2/21, you have to buy Working Man Dead's 50th Anniversary album. To get 2/23, it's unreleased at present. To get 2/24, you must buy Enjoying the Ride box. Folks, February '71 was all meant to be a boxed set!!!!!!!!!!! These shows are so important to the GD legacy and everything could have been fixed after Three from the Vault was released. But instead, you've chosen to put us on a treasure hunt to track down this epic 6 night run, throwing some shows on obscure releases and then hatcheting up 2/20/71 on Enjoying the Ride?!? And then there's April of '71. Another amazing future box set of epic shows and you are somehow blowing this opportunity as well? We don't care that some has been released on Ladies & Gentlemen...Release them all in their entirety and stop HATCHETING up these amazing shows!!!!! I am fortunate enough to have all the SBs from these epic shows but most don’t have them.

Remorse.....
If anyone out here in DeadLand suffers from a case of it PM me. I've lost hope of TPTB releasing an AME.

If you're wondering why some of the shows in the Enjoying box are incomplete, you might want to check out the recent episodes of the Deadcast podcast thing, where they talk about what some of the issues were.

Spoiler alert: sometimes there were problems with missing reels, unusable tapes, musicians getting dosed and disappearing before they could finish the show, and that sort of thing. Not sure if they explain all of the incomplete shows, but they do talk about some of them.

I’m referring specifically to the ‘71 shows. The complete shows are all in the vault and could have been released that way. In the case of 4/25, they decided to release everything but what they already released on Ladies & Gentlemen so now completists must spend time putting the show back together with all of the unnecessary edits and repackage the show in its entirety. In the case of 4/27, I get that The Beach Boys got dosed that night (by the dead:) and were terrible on stage but everything the Dead performed by themselves that night should still have been included. And don’t get me started on hatcheting up 2/20!?! It’s all very unfortunate.

And he paid the GD juggernaut for it

All lame quips aside, yeah, the hatcheting is annoying

But as BTO sez , "so I took what i could get "

(Full disclosure.. I did not drop the bux for this box)

I hear ya. I don't necessarily disagree with your premise, but I'll take what I can get. In this upcoming box, one show I'm particularly interested in, is the 1989 Deer Creek show. It may not be the best of '89 or even the top 20 of that year, but it was the first performance at that venue which they went on the play until 1995, and I'm excited to own it.

That said, if DL and the Rhino team said that they will put releases on a hiatus, take 5 years (arbitrary--no idea how long it would take) to master everything left in the vault, then put it out in fairly basic packaging (think Dick's or Road Trips) and throw it all up on the site to whomever wants it, I would be okay with that...hell, I would prefer it.

But I'm guessing there is some marketing strategy in play that shows the slow drip method works. DL is trying to keep things relative and thinking of themes and other interesting ways to release stuff which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. But I often wonder, how long until the end is near, until they decide whatever is left in the vault IS NOT worth releasing?

Does anyone know what shipping method they will use? We should be getting shipping notices soon if it's a big heavy box and we are to actually receive it on the 30th.

Once an item is sold out, why not start shipping?

Send me my box!

Shipping is either via UPS or FedEx. If a PO box is used, then the carriers will hand over to either UPS Mail Innovations or FedEx Ground Economy. Generally the day or two before release date, shipments are not necessarily tied to be received on release date, but on or about. This is from my past experience with purchases from this site

Sorry, don’t think that’s correct.
Certainly not been our experience…
Especially since the contract disputes between USPS and UPS.
We have things constantly denied/returned because of this nonsense.
If anything is shipped via UPS or FedEx to the PO, they’ll return it…

Which is why if we knew, we could simply address it accordingly.

Have rec'd non-subscription items, like magnets (54 I got #1) via Fedex ground. My subscription items start out UPS, end up with Mail Innovations (an info black hole, and "not a day definite service"...the worst, imho).
Yeah, would be nice to pick the shipper at time of order to avoid returns, mis routes, sloppy handoffs.

The interesting part is the non-sub items arrive several days before sub items, consistently, though shipped same day. Fontana vs Oceanview.

I contacted UPS about their contract ending with USPS, as has been commented upon heretofore, and was told that Mail Innovations was not affected, only Sure Post. I have not had to change my shipping address, which is to my PO Box, and have received my Dave’s Pickses on schedule. As far as the big boxes are concerned, I believe the orders will be picked up by FedEx Ground Economy which will ultimately be handed over to USPS. This is how my copy of the DaP 2 vinyl box was delivered to me last fall. I believe my order for boxtrosity will be going the same way. Of course, I do understand Oro’s concerns and I guess I’ll be a little apprehensive about the possibility of a non-delivery or return to sender until I see how the tracking goes once shipping gets under way

And yes, all our DaPs go the hybrid route (sorry don’t know proper term as their similar) what I call smart post, and have only had one get mixed up, and that was because somehow the home address got used instead of the PO Box by Rhino, but they made it right, so all good!
BUT…!!!😁, some of the boxes have been sent standard UPS, which was fine, since we knew ahead, and were able to address accordingly…

Thanks for the USPS/UPS update, last I checked it hadn’t been resolved, so helpful to know! Shanks!

Edit: of course the beauty of straight UPS is you can change the address in route ; )

In same boat as Oro - my shipping address for this is a small town PO Box with no local postal delivery.

UPS Mail Innovations still works with USPS on "mail" including small packages. Upper weight limit is 3 lbs. That's why its still used for Dave's Picks.

From what I see there is currently no UPS service where you can ship larger packages that get handed off to USPS. Any attempt to ship a larger package to a PO Box should be rejected by UPS at origin (not that that always happens I'm guessing).

So for us PO Box people, the 60th Boxzilla has to be shipped either FedEx SmartPost or USPS itself. Guessing the former but we'll see soon enough.

Hard to believe that this is coming our way in the next little bit. Super excited. Hoping that the shipping goes smoothly, fingers crossed.

Of all the riches within, and there are many, my first listen will probably involve the John Deere Time Machine and traveling back to my youth in the summer of 1980 - Alpine 8/23/80, my 4th show. No circulating soundboard. Lost Sailor > Saint was part of the listening party and it sounded really sweet. Alpine was a beloved venue and that was the first show the GD played there.

For the 50th, Boxilla was sent via FedEx to me. I remember because I was in training offsite that week and weatherwise it was stormy. I feared that the box would get wet, so I had the box be held at FedEx for customer pickup. Conveniently it was off the highway between the training facility and my house! Looking forward to the new release, did not get the vinyl since it's a chopshop...
