When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

I was on the job at an all day presentation that I was video taping, running the camera and recording. I learned about it during a break at 11 am. It was hard for me to concentrate the rest of the day. I felt a big hole in my life. Later friends gathered at our house and we all went over to GG park to join the heads gathering together in grief. There was a large circle of heads on the grass, with lots of candles and pictures of Jerry, and people singing along to guys with guitars and drums.

The day the news of Jerry's death broke, I was starting a new job in a new city and pretty overwhelmed by everything that entailed. I was unpacking boxes, meeting new people, shaking lots of hands and nodding vigorously as my new bosses explained my new duties, and I didn't have much time to think about it.

Until later. That evening there was a gathering of people in the park near my new apartment, so I went down there to listen to the songs and read the signs and try to process the whole thing.

    I'm still processing.

I, too, was surprised by huge public outpouring of grief. My primary show-going years were the late '70s and early '80s, a time when the Dead was widely considered a cult band that was barely relevant to the music biz or mainstream culture. By 1995, I had not been to a show in years, and I didn't realize how big the "cult" had become. But the public reaction to Jerry's death--the front page stories, the mass gatherings, the musical tributes--was a lot like when John Lennon was killed. And that was when it first hit me that the Dead's audience was damn near as big as the Beatles.

And I think it's bigger now than it was then.

TTB was great at Red Rocks, btw. I also traveled up to Bend to visit a friend and caught a show (just one of the two) there. It was super cool to see some of the same folks I had met at RR, some of whom were following TTB through several cities on the current tour. Strangers stopping strangers. High fives, hugs, and other things were exchanged. Reminded me of the olden days, it did.

Well, yesterday actually. I can remember that Jerry's death was reported on the national news and was front page news the following day. Apart from my one Deadhead friend, this surprised everyone else I knew. The Dead obviously were nowhere near as well known in the U.K. as The States, and most of my friends assumed they were just a strange acquired taste of mine. An obscure cult band from the 60's with a very limited following. They didn't know anything about you lot.

Forgive me if this has been asked all ready, but ...
I procrastinated too long on this box and blew my opportunity.
Any chance dead.net would make individual shows available for download?
(kinda like they did with the Europe '72 box/discs).
I can't bring myself to spend 500 bucks on a bunch of flac files, but wouldn't mind spending 100 bucks or so for the '71 Fillmore East and Port Chester shows.

But still able to post comments, go figure.
My offer is still standing if anyone gets buyers remorse, PM me. There was one on eBay for $1,649.00 NOW GONE. I wouldn't have went that high especially when I'm only interested in 7 shows. To those who bought as as preorder remember this,
The waiting is the hardest part.

I always think they want WAY too much for the digital files.

400 & 500 bucks and you get NO physical stuff? The books and box are only worth 100 bucks?

Digital prices should be more like 100 bucks, they already have the digital files, cost nothing to send out.

I would think they lose a chunk of available money by pricing them that high. Most will get a copy from someone, but maybe if the files were 100 bucks more people would buy versus getting a copy.

But what do I know?

Think the flac/alec files include a digital copy of the cassette?

Ok for several weeks now I've had this stupid tune stuck in my brain and have not been able to figure out what song and no luck with internet searches. I thought this group was my last chance.

Don't even know if these are the words (if I knew the real words I've would have found on internet)

Kinda a driving beat, male voice

"standing on the corner, singing to my soul, everybody here just loves to rock and roll, everybody here just loves to rock and roll"

Anybody?

Am I too far off base to say maybe you was thinking of the 1970s Dobie Gray song "Drift Away" and you was just a little off on your lyrics?
If not, then I have no idea but am totally of piqued curiosity to whom the band is and their song that sounds pretty cool from just them snippet of lyrics and no actual music.

Not drift away. That has a floating beat, this is driven. Words maybe totally wrong.

I'm a finder of lost things and I never stop looking. Dropped a nut in the grass, I will look for weeks for that nut even if i used another nut and moved on. But I am VERY GOOD at finding lost things.

I could have been Travis McGee.

I just knew this group threw such a wide loop on music somebody will know.

Maybe I'm wrong! :-)

"Gold" - John Stewart (Stevie Nicks helps).
And I always thought that was Warren Zevon, oops.

Took her like 2 seconds once I read her your post.
I really thought that was a Warren Zevon song.
Speaking of John Stewart's bio, which was interesting, Warren's is amazing.

Just played it for my steel-tip darts team Tuesday while we were throwing! I bring a boombox and a playlist, and I had "Gold" on there this time, as it's one of my favorite tunes from my formative years listening non-stop to the radio. Followed it up with "The Breakup Song," as that has a very similar rhythm.

As long as we're on lost classics, Diesel's "Sausalito Summernight" is a great tune, as is "Slipping Away" by Dave Edmunds, but I'm just now learning that it was written by Jeff Lyne!

Be Kind, rewind.

I think I'll probably listen to the Berkeley Greek show first. See how closely it matches up with memory. But I really want to listen to that one start to finish, so it kind of depends on when the box gets here and what my day is like when it does.

If I don't have time to do a whole show, I'll cue up the '69 bits. Because '69. (Huh. Huh huh. Huh huh huh huh. As Butthead would have it.)

I'm going to try not to get too crazy about shipping notices and whatnot. I generally get my Daves and my boxes about a week after the drop dates, and I'm just going to assume it'll be along somewhere between say June 6-11. It's a bigger package, heavier too, and maybe that complicates the shipping somehow and things will take a little longer. Then again there's 'only' 6,000 of 'em to deal with, a relatively small number, so maybe that speeds things up?

There's just no way for me to know, so I'm-a try not to think about it. Try.

Sad to read about Simon House. He helped make "Warrior On The Edge Of Time " one of Hawkwinds best albums.

I actually saw Hawkwind at The Barbican in London last Monday. Incredible. Probably 50% new stuff and 50% more well known songs. Including the opening two on "Warrior" - "Assault and Battery" into "The Golden Void."
I've no idea how often I have seen them. First time was in 1973 and the last was 2019, with most years inbetween at least once.

First.. I somehow lost track of this thread, and now that the box is sold out, it's a bit difficult to navigate to.

What show first? I swore when Boxzilla came out I was going to listen to the shows in reverse order. But I couldn't resist.. 67 had my attention and I did 66 first, because, well, why not? And the rest fell in order. I have to admit, the later era shows exceeded expectations, which was nice. Even 86 was surprisingly well played and had this great little gem, a wonderful Comes A Time, to soothe my 86 anxieties.

I will either go in reverse order or in order. It will give something my OCD to do while I enjoy the boxset.

I always try to read the liner notes in close proximity to when I listen to the shows. It gives my Alzheimer's something to do while I quickly forget the write-ups and get back to my true passion.. telling all the young hipsters outside to get off my grass while shaking my fists in a fit of uncontrollable fake rage. Try it sometime, it will wash all your troubles away.

Offhand, I cannot think of a better way to absorb and take it all in. Looking forward to it.

I was also thinking of going for the '69 Fillmore stuff or Greek Theatre first. For me though it's more about the time of year. I like going in order but I won't have the patience to wait for some of these. I'm pretty excited for the early '80s stuff.

Nice to see properly addressed for the carrier in use. Should be uneventful, direct to house vs PO.
Starting with cassette, maybe jump to 3/20/77 because b-day, then return to an orderly fashion from the beginning. Probably show up around the 8th. Woo hoo.

Yeah, what a tough call! Well, I probably will find myself starting with the Nassau 1973 show. That's as a straight through listen, not just a rip to the computer. Also I'm starting there definitely due to the recent Dave's release being on the brain and it's from the same era and tour in fact. Though also because of a happenstance of me scoring Dave's #32 {Philly 1973} from the web store last week. I can see indeed why that Philly show was in Betty's personal stash, the 'jam' between "Truckin>> & >>Dark*Star" is fantabulous! Followed by a sublime "Sing me Back Home" by Jerry. {3347/20000} in (just a bit outside) PdX, 5 & 1/2 years later!

Anyways,... The 1981 Brent shows in Hartford and Hampton will be a solid second and third choices and promptly ripped to the iTunes for a mega mixing up super chop show, (I know, the sacrilege!) The 1977 Winterland, 1978 Philly, 1979 Red Rocks, 1983 Frost, 1984 Greek, & 1982 Landover filler are all too tough of calls as for what to play next but all are in the running. God knows in what order, maybe I should have a lottery?

No disrespect to the other shows in the box! (1989s,1991,1971,1972, Primal et al.,...)

So if I’ve not received an email and when I go back to the order emailing March and clicking on the order gives me 404 page not found. Do I just muster up a little patience? Since my basket at the store is empty it doesn’t show me past orders, sigh.

This is the response I got the other day

“Unfortunately, we do not have an estimate as to when account access will be restored.

If you have any currently processing orders, you will be sent a confirmation email when your shipment goes out.

I apologize again for this frustrating experience.

If you have any questions, or would like to check on your order status, please let me know”

It appears that an email will be sent when the item is dispatched. I wait with bated breath.

43 years ago I was up in S.F for a benefit show by the Grateful Dead. Fun night. Boz Scaggs, Country Joe, John Cipollina and others also played. It was a benefit for Vietnam Veterans.

No word from the Dead, but FedEx has my package and are saying it’ll be here in the south suburbs of Cleveland by 6/1.
This might be one of the times where I never get a shipping notice.

…about 12 hours after I saw that my FedEx account has an inbound package coming to me from Vista, CA. Thanks to Bluecrow’s timely post from 5/23, I opened a case with the Store late last Friday afternoon and requested a change of address from my PO Box to my residence. FedEx Home Delivery evidently is now being used for my order, not their SmartPost service, again due to the size and weight of the package. On Sunday evening, I received an emailed acknowledgment and confirmation that my residence address is going to be used in place of my PO Box number, which is what is showing on FedEx’s tracker. Expected arrival in NJ is Monday, 6/2. Here’s hoping that Oro, TooMuch, Bluecrow, and everyone else who weighed in on this with me will get their packages delivered timely, without incident, and in good condition

Well I'll be darned: received a shipping notice just now, and according to the tracking info, it's supposed to arrive on Friday!

Naturally, this happens to be a Friday when I will be out of town. Until Monday! But the wife will be around and hopefully will get home from work in time to snatch the package away from potential porch pirates. Which generally aren't a problem in my neighborhood. Knock wood.

I can't imagine my brain allowing me to go through this box in any order other than chronologically.

This latest Dave's is a good one, eh?!

Having finally finished my first listen to 04/14/78 from the Devils box, I am now giving DaP37 (04/15/78) a second-ever go-through before finishing up the box with 04/16/78.

Be Kind.

She’ll be coming ‘round the mountain when she comes.
She’ll be driving six white horses when she comes.
Oh, we’ll all go out to meet her when she comes.
Oh, we’ll all have chicken and dumplings when she comes.
We’ll be singing “Hallelujah” when she comes.
HAHAHA!
