When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

I was on the job at an all day presentation that I was video taping, running the camera and recording. I learned about it during a break at 11 am. It was hard for me to concentrate the rest of the day. I felt a big hole in my life. Later friends gathered at our house and we all went over to GG park to join the heads gathering together in grief. There was a large circle of heads on the grass, with lots of candles and pictures of Jerry, and people singing along to guys with guitars and drums.

The day the news of Jerry's death broke, I was starting a new job in a new city and pretty overwhelmed by everything that entailed. I was unpacking boxes, meeting new people, shaking lots of hands and nodding vigorously as my new bosses explained my new duties, and I didn't have much time to think about it.

Until later. That evening there was a gathering of people in the park near my new apartment, so I went down there to listen to the songs and read the signs and try to process the whole thing.

    I'm still processing.

I, too, was surprised by huge public outpouring of grief. My primary show-going years were the late '70s and early '80s, a time when the Dead was widely considered a cult band that was barely relevant to the music biz or mainstream culture. By 1995, I had not been to a show in years, and I didn't realize how big the "cult" had become. But the public reaction to Jerry's death--the front page stories, the mass gatherings, the musical tributes--was a lot like when John Lennon was killed. And that was when it first hit me that the Dead's audience was damn near as big as the Beatles.

And I think it's bigger now than it was then.

TTB was great at Red Rocks, btw. I also traveled up to Bend to visit a friend and caught a show (just one of the two) there. It was super cool to see some of the same folks I had met at RR, some of whom were following TTB through several cities on the current tour. Strangers stopping strangers. High fives, hugs, and other things were exchanged. Reminded me of the olden days, it did.

Well, yesterday actually. I can remember that Jerry's death was reported on the national news and was front page news the following day. Apart from my one Deadhead friend, this surprised everyone else I knew. The Dead obviously were nowhere near as well known in the U.K. as The States, and most of my friends assumed they were just a strange acquired taste of mine. An obscure cult band from the 60's with a very limited following. They didn't know anything about you lot.

I heard a laugh I recognised come rolling from the earth
Saw it rise into the skies like lightning giving birth
It sounded like Garcia but I couldn't see the face
Just the beard and the glasses and a smile on empty space

Arrived on the porch Thursday, no shipping notice. All good, safe and sound. I agree, a box this big and expensive should have prier notice before arriving. I'm gonna have to wait a little before I can get my hands on it, cause I'm out of town for a few days. Oh well, I waited this long, I can wait a little longer. Looking forward to everyone's comments on boxzilla2. As always, I enjoy everyone's stimulating conversation, thanks, all!

When your the first, none of the file names are in the "ripper", so I typed all the titles (almost all)

Hi there,
I see we've joined the club the same day in 2007.
And now we've got the same problem.
No shipping notice, no tracking number, nothing.
Hope we'll be getting the jewels soon.
Good luck and best wishes

I’ve had no tracking email but someone here posted the FedEx phone number and it said my box would be delivered Tuesday. After lunch today I went outside to throw out the garbage and my box set was between the garage and garbage container, lol! FedEx delivered and never knocked on my door or rang the doorbell, oh well I’m just glad I found it. I’m ripping cds now and starting the box with 7/15/89. Now I’ve just got to find something to transfer the cassette to digital…

For the positive messages for recouping. Means a lot for Dane and BTK and Nite to respond. What I wouldnt give to meet almost all here. Sit around an old camp fire telling stories.

DaneHead: This is the 50th anniversary of me seeing 2 out of the 5 Elvis the pelvis shows.

As I stated before his band cooks. Between 1975 and a year later Elvis changed dramatically. Found a local newspaper article that discussed the weight gain and considerable drop in quality of performance.

Hoping all get their boxes soon. Mine will wait to start of week to open. One consideration for those waiting. There is always going to snags in business operations. It takes a lot of people to get this stuff delivered. For instance, some areas of Fedex or any other logistics company might be low on employees. I am sure many here know how packets and the internet work, same packet delivery can be found in nationwide shippers. Fortunately, in most shipping, they have have minimal packet/ package loss.

It is troubling though. We need Warner to correct the notification process. I worry about a possible Dave's theft. Although chances here are small. I wouldnt want a box outside over night. I actually saw the fedex guy pull up. He handed straight to me. I asked him if he needed to take a picture. He said, "your good."

The show on the cassette, is it also on CD?

I understand the marketing gimmick, harking back to the days of old when bootlegs were traded on cassettes (the good ol' days), but shouldn't it also be provided on CD so that people who no longer have cassette players don't have to struggle to find a way to get the music off the cassette?

Wait. Let me get this straight...

So, the last 4 Dave's Picks, DaP 51 thru 54 are still available for purchase? With DaP 51 having been released in July of 2024, and still not sold out?

I remember a few years ago Dave's Picks being sold out within hours, not months or years.

I think it's time for TPTB to release everything and call it a day. There are some premo golden age shows (70s) people are still waiting for that should be released now.

Stop playing games. The few remaining living members of the band will not be adversely affected by cutting to the chase and releasing the better stuff now. Stop dragging it out. There's not much time left, for heaven's sake.

....Yeah, it's not real wood. I was wrong in my pre~order days mussings but I only had to go with the photos on line at the time. The latch is a real piece of metal though!

To answer H.C. Sunshine's query,.... No, the Big ~60th~ Box sold out about a month ago and was first announced like the second week in March. There's been much kibitzing about the cassette tape practically but symbolically I love it!

Gary - hope you are doing better.. if you have money to spare - there came a really nice book/4 cd-set last year; "Elvis - Now In Person 1972" - a few years before you saw him - when MGM filmed some shows for the movie "Elvis On Tour" ..

...OOooohhhhHH Yeah! Just loving that Nassau 1973 show, and especially the "Bird Song" they played. I really like the '73 versions of that song but the autumn of 1972 has some great ones too, namely from the 'ice cream show' late August in Springfield.

Ya know though? The best shows from 1973 have a "Bird Song" AND "Here Comes Sunshine" in the playlist! Some specific dates come to mind; 3/22 In Utica, NY. Of course 6/10 @ RFK in D.C., and from the PNw Box there's them fabulous renditions from Vancouver BC 6/22. Also that awesome Dave's 2021 Bonus Disc with the killer cover art crow from 9/7 in Nassau.

Yeah that 'PitB' from the 3/16/73 is pretty hot jamming' too! Jerry's playing pretty heavy there, on a more uptempo furious bent note jam. Good Stuff!

Sunshine - I agree there, that it might be more appropriate to release any great unreleased 70's...and 60's... shows now rather than try and fit them in with any long term strategy. Assuming that people who favour those years are older than people who like the 80's and 90's, they might not have as much time left as those who favour later years.

One of the many liberating things about sailing past your 65th year, as I did a few years back, is that anything you fancy doing, or think you might like to try, you can do now, rather than wait for some time in the distant future. Every day is New Years Eve. Health problems ? - give over, you're still alive.

Is not listed on the digital version. (in Store)
Starts with the June '69 shows.
So if they didn't bother to make it available there, not likely a digital one is forthcoming.

EDIT: Now I see it listed in the comments section description (but it says "Cassette") for FLAC, so it's hard to tell if it will be there or not. And the recent post there says issues still exist on the downloads. So maybe you get the physical copy of the cassette with the download? Maybe that would explain why someone asked why there is a $15 shipping charge for the download?

Does anyone who received the box set know what the tape BIAS & EQ settings for it are? Normal, High, or Metal? Does it have Dolby and if so, B or C?

They definitely went era appropriate on the tape 😆. It appears to be a normal type 1 no nr 60 minute cassette. I have recently started putting together my ability to play tapes. I’ve bought head cleaner rubber conditioner demag. Pulled my Aiwa 3 head deck out of storage ( as I mentioned earlier I had a Dragon in the 80s but it’s been dead and gone a long time). What I’ve found is stuff is hard to find but available for a price. It appears that they only make type 1 now. The days of buying bricks of Maxell II-s tapes are gone. And I believe type IV isn’t available at any price. I will connect this week. Looking forward to it
On another subject I bet the people working the subscription etc. releases would rather not dump all of it available on the market . Dave could ride this all the way to retirement 🤣.

A good friend of mine does archival audio restoration projects as a hobby/part-time job. I'll probably see him in person about 10 days. If nobody has posted digital files by then, I will ask him to digitize the cassette. He's a good dude, not a 'head but he respects the Dead. He'd do it, and he'd do a good job. I'll be surprised if somebody else doesn't do it before then, but ... help on the way for everybody who (like me) no longer has a cassette player.

Sound logic and that's kinda what I thought. Fits the theme of those days and the cost would be much higher otherwise. Also gives the widest audience to those needing to play it nowadays. It's a bit ironic though, given their emphasis on sound quality, but it'll sound way better than the copy I don't have!

Yes, only Type 1 tapes still manufactured. Unopened Maxell XLll or TDK-SA are out there but most are asking at least $6.00/tape or more. Seen used but recordable (tab not removed) ones for less, usually around $3.00 each. One guy has some unopened Type lV metal for $45.00 each! Really? Listed for weeks now and haven't sold so there's that. I bought some various brand unopened Type l tapes for around $1.00 each that sound just fine. Actually sound very good (from a good deck) if you don't oversaturate them. I still have 2 cars with a tape deck in them.

At times I've thought that this "cassette" would arrive and actually be a CD that was shaped like or decorated to emulate a cassette, or that the cassette would have a slot with a SanDisk in it, a disk with the show on it--a disk that one could slip into a laptop/phone/mp3player, but the reports from those who have the box in hand have disabused me of those notions! :)

Yeah! AiWA were an awesome brand with good, clear quality sound AND Big BASS! They made great portables as their brand of 'walkmans' that wasn't a Sony. Good brand too though I might add. Also them always came with solid good headphones, not quite the 'ear muffs' but they were beefy in sound as well as manufacture. Comfy too I recall, but alas they always ended up broke in some way eventually.

If anyone isn't going to listen to their tape can you send me a PM? I will be more than happy to help ship it to me, I LOVE jamming out cassettes on my stereo! ✌🏼

I finally figured out how to utilize the FedEx app to find delivery notification. The box should be here in Maine by Tuesday. Fingers crossed! The trick to the FedEx site, I think, is to also sign up for the Delivery Manager. I got confused (so I listened to the music play), and I finally signed up for that, and then I saw the tracking information in all its glory (Gnarlywood LLC appeared)! If any of you are still trying to figure this out, let me know. I might be able to help. I can't wait to see this beautiful box and jam out to some Good Ol' Grateful Dead!

I received shipping notice at 4am Thursday with an expected delivery date at around noon tomorrow. I know another poster who received no shipping notice at all. We both got our boxes Saturday in the 10-11 am time frame

4 Winds: Haven't received my box yet, I hope she's enjoying the ride.

Made me chuckle

As for older heads liking older GD and younger heads liking 80's and beyond, I'm not sure I agree with that assumption. Could be, but doubt it. Regardless, I think they are going to release things as they see fit and I don't see that changing.

I haven't received my shipping notice. At some point this week I expect to see the box sitting on my front porch when I get home. My big concern is that the size and weight don't displace my house off it's foundation. It's an old house afterall...

Looking forward to what might be the last big, biggie box? Will they save enough powder and will there be demand for this on their 75th Anniversary. Speaking of.. I thought long and hard about going out to San Francisco this summer, big fan of California and the GD. I decided against it, it has zoo potential and it would have greatly eroded my coinage. I hope those that go have a great time without me.

Yeah I got a package coming shrouded in mystery ? No shipping email no tracking No. I hope it's the box from dead dot without a net, and not from the "Uni-Bong-er"

Sorry to hear that so many are experiencing various problems, or at least weirdnesses. In my case, I got a timely shipping notice, it turned out to be accurate, and 1334 arrived on the shipping date. Will wonders never cease! I happened to be out of town all weekend, but my wife scooped it up off the porch and set it in my office room. And now I'm home and listening to it. With a big smile on my face.

Also, as someone who has often been skeptical of the value of the swag that gets appended to these boxes, I feel obligated to say: this time, there's some pretty cool swag. The box is cool. It is indeed BIG, but it's not that heavy. And it just looks cool. I like the 'travel guide' book, and the map, and the snapshots. Love the bumperstickers. Props to everybody involved in putting that stuff together.

Listening to the Greek show right now: audio pretty sketchy for the first couple songs, but you can hear somebody dialing in the mix on the fly and by the time we get to Brent's solo on CC Rider, it's pretty good. Pretty pretty pretty good. And then it gets better.

So, just stopping by to say there's at least one very happy customer out there. I'm digging it the most, and looking forward to many happy hours with this set. If you're still waiting on a shipping notice, I hope you get yours soon.

It is blank and comes with postage.

You have to record onto it what shows from the vault you want released and then mail it back to Dave.

I would say everything from '69 to '78 is reel to reel, '79 to '81is cassette, '83 to '87 PCM, '89 to '94 DAT?? The reel to reel , cassette, maybe the PCM were Plangentized??

This will be my first listen of anything from the Nassau Coliseum Dance Concert run. I am really stoked. Good things can come to those that wait. I have a first print of the Swell Dance concert poster that I bought at the Psychedelic Shop, Market Street, San Fran. It was bought December 30, 1986. Plan on having it finally framed this summer. Will look great in my AV room. I am sure that the Dance Concertwas discussed a month or two back. I missed it unfortunately but plan to go back and read a lot of comments.

What happened to me health wise was this. In the deep south, where I live, we went about 5-6 weeks with no rain. When you have spring pollen spewing every where and no rain makes the air horrendous. I saw one day that Atlanta had the all time record for extremely poor air quality about 8 weeks ago. That is pollen plus ozone. At the same time that I was struggling with breathing I also developed a high fever, not extreme. I had to battle a 3+ degree fever two times. Meaning, the fever broke but then returned. All the fun stuff, coughing up blood and blowing blood from sinuses. Did I also get covid or rsv? Never know because my dumbass never went to the doctor. Did think a couple of times of going to hospital as the lungs had a lot of fluid. I hope our resident Doc might enlighten me about chest and dangers of fluid on the lungs. OK enough of that.

Weird thing as a result, I didn't order the BBBox until there were less than 300 left. Not to criticize, but the act of scarcity is truly the new marketing tactic/mantra.

I will say, I can't wait to give my undivided attention to this box for quite a long time...

I am consuming this like I did trades back in the day: jumping all over from era to era and listening by set, not whole show (except one).

I started with 5-1-81 Set II and then 9-16-87 Set I.

Took in both sets of 11-21-85 and then 11-22-85 Set II. The 11-22 set was new to me and I'm an instant fan on first listen. That one may be the hidden gem of the set for me.

I really like how they tracked the 11-21-85 jam. The She Belongs to Me (an absolute fav for me) includes about a minute and a half of the transition jam at the beginning and a bit at the end. I like that. For me, the movement into the song is as crucial as the song itself in some instances and this is indeed one such instance. I bet some will grumble about this but I really like the decision!

I realized that half this box set is comprised of Brent shows. This feels like it was conceived for heads that came of age in the 80s. I love it!

Anything Betty recorded will be 1/4 inch including '79
Cassettes are easily identifiable by the sound, particularly the top end
A little more difficult to be precise after that but yes DAT appeared in the early 80's
DAT also doesn't require speed correction (Plangent) as it is locked
