When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.
ENJOYING THE RIDE maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive collection spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.
With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.
These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.
Are you going to test the…
Are you going to test the FLAC files before releasing them? After all, you never fixed the Friend of the Devil FLAC files.
Do the downloads include every show in the box?
I'm not seeing 2/20/71, 4/25/71, 4/27/72 or 8/23/80 in the Track Listing. But they are listed under Product Details.
Maybe that's why it's $100…
Maybe that's why it's $100 more than the ALACs.
How many files won't work?
It's been months since Friend of the Devil was released, and that had over 30 corrupt files... that have never been fixed. Shelling out 500 bucks in hopes there isn't the same problem again is a hard no. Maybe fix the last release before focusing on a new one.
FotD
@ RealOutkasty:
At least the FotD digital files have been pulled from the store with the exception of the one show that had no corrupted files. Seems like a pretty large admission of failure to me.
EDIT: My cynical side says that part of the reason they were yanked from the store was the comment thread.
Proactive
Email I just fired off to the emails I got from the FotD debacle:
"One simple question, and please also copy the answer to the comment thread on the FLAC pre-order page:
Are you going to test the files before you publish them to avoid a repeat of Friend of the Devil? I note that you've pulled those files from the store with the exception of the one show that never showed any errors. You're asking us to drop $500 on this item; I think it behooves you to produce proof in the comment thread that all of the files are properly encoded and are decodable. I'll point your attention to this app:
AudioTester 1.7. You'll have to search for it because you won't let me point you to it.
Post a screenshot proving that all files decode properly and you'll get a lot more business. Be prepared to offer full refunds for anyone who uses the same tool to show the files you stated as good are actually corrupt.
You've made us all very wary of purchasing downloads. The only one who can fix that is you."
EDIT: Initial reply was "we're escalating".
EDIT 2: I do note that there's no mention of 24/96 or 24/192. If this is all at 16/44.1, there's a much better chance it won't get bodged.
Flac Download Fiasco
What's the definition of insanity? According to the Oxford English Dictionary it is "extreme foolishness or irrationality." Given the horrible technical AND customer service experience of the Lyceum hi-res and FOTD hi res releases, it would be insanity for any of us to purchase this...
I am only interested in downloads because a) there is enough plastic in the world and we need to stop that madness b) the sound quality of hi res is better than cd and c) my non-digital music collection is referred to in our home as "the albatross." I can't bring anything into this house related to the GD and not annoy people. So, I guess what I am saying is- I am insane and I am annoying...I want those 1969 shows polished up by Norman.
So much for proactive
Today's trenchant comment on my emails pointing out the serial failures of download editions:
Hello Ned,
Thank you for your email and your feedback.
We will pass along your comments.
Please stay tuned to Dead for any developments, and thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Mac
EDIT GRIPE: They've so screwed down the post rules that I cannot even use the word for the cloth thing a basketball goes through without triggering the "no linky" filter.
Do You Listen?
Bloddy 'ell, please let us know if you've fixed the file integrity issues for downloads. I sure as hell don't need another 60 CDs laying about the place, but will be forced into buying these due to the utter lack of respect you give to the downloaded versions.
You do know that us Deadheads just might know a bit or 24 about recording formats & data integrity?
Fingers Crossed...
I was too slow to get the physical set, even though I have no interest in having the box and media itself, so despite my better judgement, I went ahead and purchased the FLAC version. Got my download notifications (all 30 or so of them) and am going to download this evening and verify them.
ALAC download issue
Purchased ALAC version of Enjoying The Ride boxset. After download and import into Apple Music track 6 Dire Wolf from 1994-10-03 Boston Garden is missing. I attempted a redownload from the provided hyperlink with similar results. Anyone else experience a similar issue with either ALAC or FLAC purchase? Thanks in advance.
ALAC Download Issue for me as well
Same issue that was posted above - missing Dire Wolf from the 94 Boston show. It’s missing entirely from the zipped folder that was downloaded.
Corrupt Zip Files
All but 6 of the zip files are corrupt and cannot be unzipped. So far, I only have:
Boston Garden
Deer Creek
Shoreline
Frost
Henry J Kaiser
Oakland Coliseum
Others having the same issue?
After all these years.
Warner has No Dam clue how to put digital files up for download succesfully. More importantly the issues some are having here are exactly what happend with Friends of the Devils Corrupt files and WARNER seems to not give a sh!& and just keeps doing the same DAM thing! Is there anyone who can make it work? PATHETIC! However I spent almost a thousand bucks on the box set and vinyl and I don’t even get a simple shipping notice from this pathetic vendor. Mr Pinkus are you alive in there?
Boston Garden '94 FLAC
Dire Wolf is NOT missing on my FLAC download for Boston Garden 10/3/94 FYI.
44k?
I'm noticing that several of the sets are in 44.1k resolution instead of 192k. I don't remember seeing any notes about this in the store, and double-checked again to confirm I didn't miss something.
Can anyone at GDN confirm this is correct? I didn't catalog them all yet but for example, Boston Garden 10/3/94 is 44k resolution.
I've also done integrity checks so far on 10 of the 20 sets, just using FLAC "test for errors" option and so far no errors. I'll hopefully complete the rest by tomorrow evening EDT.
FLAC File Checks
I've run integrity checks on all files in each of the 20 FLAC download zips, and all passed. This was just using the flac "-test" switch for internal integrity check, since there are no md5 signatures shared in the download.
No issues with decompressing the zips either- if you ran into problems with that, right-click the zip and tick the "Unblock" box, then click OK. Then unzip it.
Now here's hoping that there's no other audio glitches like some of the previous releases...
PDF of Booklet?
I've been really enjoying listening to these shows, although I'm only a few into it so far. No problems with downloading, unzipping, pulling mp3 files. Thanks for that, for sure.
However, where is a pdf copy of the booklet? At a discount of only $100 from the physical box, this is a radical omission. The 30 Trips Lightning Bolt USB drive included a pdf of that book. Please make this available. A zip of the cassette contents would be nice, too.
44K
In some cases, that's the best that can be done.
From the product page:
This High Definition Download Of 24-Bit Audio Was Created Using The Best Source Audio Available. Because The Source Material Spans Many Years And Is Culled From Many Formats, Sample Rates Will Vary By Show Between 44/24 And 192/24.
Extra Bits
PCM and DAT would not be needed with those higher bit rates since they were not recorded in those higher bits you would be adding extra bits you don't need.
