When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

I was on the job at an all day presentation that I was video taping, running the camera and recording. I learned about it during a break at 11 am. It was hard for me to concentrate the rest of the day. I felt a big hole in my life. Later friends gathered at our house and we all went over to GG park to join the heads gathering together in grief. There was a large circle of heads on the grass, with lots of candles and pictures of Jerry, and people singing along to guys with guitars and drums.

The day the news of Jerry's death broke, I was starting a new job in a new city and pretty overwhelmed by everything that entailed. I was unpacking boxes, meeting new people, shaking lots of hands and nodding vigorously as my new bosses explained my new duties, and I didn't have much time to think about it.

Until later. That evening there was a gathering of people in the park near my new apartment, so I went down there to listen to the songs and read the signs and try to process the whole thing.

    I'm still processing.

I, too, was surprised by huge public outpouring of grief. My primary show-going years were the late '70s and early '80s, a time when the Dead was widely considered a cult band that was barely relevant to the music biz or mainstream culture. By 1995, I had not been to a show in years, and I didn't realize how big the "cult" had become. But the public reaction to Jerry's death--the front page stories, the mass gatherings, the musical tributes--was a lot like when John Lennon was killed. And that was when it first hit me that the Dead's audience was damn near as big as the Beatles.

And I think it's bigger now than it was then.

TTB was great at Red Rocks, btw. I also traveled up to Bend to visit a friend and caught a show (just one of the two) there. It was super cool to see some of the same folks I had met at RR, some of whom were following TTB through several cities on the current tour. Strangers stopping strangers. High fives, hugs, and other things were exchanged. Reminded me of the olden days, it did.

Well, yesterday actually. I can remember that Jerry's death was reported on the national news and was front page news the following day. Apart from my one Deadhead friend, this surprised everyone else I knew. The Dead obviously were nowhere near as well known in the U.K. as The States, and most of my friends assumed they were just a strange acquired taste of mine. An obscure cult band from the 60's with a very limited following. They didn't know anything about you lot.

He smiled - shook his head - "that's a lie," said he

"I been on a mountain top observing from a cloud
Been in the hearts of workers milling with the crowd

I said, "It's nice to see you lookin' back in shape again

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they gunned you down"

He said "I heard that rumour, what can I do you for?"

"Have you written anything I might have never heard?"

From the corner of my eye I saw the sun explode
I didn't look directly 'cause it would have burned my soul
When the smoke and thunder cleared enough to look around
I heard a sweet guitar lick, an old familiar sound

I heard a laugh I recognised come rolling from the earth
Saw it rise into the skies like lightning giving birth
It sounded like Garcia but I couldn't see the face
Just the beard and the glasses and a smile on empty space

No email from dead see it in FedEx but this is on a slow boat from China! For 700$ perhaps maybe they could use something other than a row boat! Takes every ounce of fun out of it. Offer expedited shipping already or Dump Warner and use Round records they have it together.

The 1981 & 1984 shows are big standouts & sound great, although lots of repeats on the 1981 material.
Weren't both 1989 shows recorded in multi-track during this time period???
These are just soundboard recordings on the box set....feels kinda like Spring 1990 again, which wasn't put out in multi-track even though it was recorded that way.
Also, for the amount this Box Set costs, is an audience recording(8/20/83) really acceptable?!?! matrix or not...

Thanks for the heads up, Colin. I have just checked out what is on this and it looks a amazing. Two previously unreleased concerts, as well as a the remix of the Chicago 1974 show that has been out for ages. The actual album, " Hall of the Mountain Grill" is also great. I'll bet it sounds superb with Stephen Tylers remix, going off what he has done with the earlier albums.
If you ever get a chance to see them again, I wouldn't hesitate.

Hope everyone is enjoying, or will enjoy, the Box when it arrives.

Somebody mentioned Aiwa decks. BITD I had an Aiwa walkman recorder/player, which I snuck into clubs to record shows when I didn't want to deal with levels on my D5. This cool Aiwa had stereo audio mini inputs so I could plug in better mics. I did a lot of clubs that way. Great deck, lasted a long time.

I think the box is very nice. Nice work from all those involved.

But am I the only one who thinks the cd's are "Leaning" the wrong way? Sitting with box open the titles seem to face the rear. I thought maybe they put the "sleeve" in backwards. But I couldn't get it out to flip around, so I left it.

Also got to say the shit was well packed. The way the book held the cassette tight was nice, form inserts did good. It was definity ready to ship.

As we used to say in the cell block i was in..... Better to have your stuff ready, then your shit packed.

Wow . . . awesome news!

I've had a feeling a HOTMG reissue was on the way for a while now and was hoping it would might include the Edmonton Sundown show. To get that, PLUS a remix of the Chicago show, PLUS another from the 1999 Party tour, is rich pickings indeed.

For anyone interested who hasn't read it, I can thoroughly recommend Andrew Lauder's book Happy Trails, which covers, amongst other things, this era of Hawkwind and the 1999 Party tour. Andrew would have arranged for the recording of all those shows. He also talks about catching one of the Dead's Feb 1970 Fillmore East shows on his first night in the US.

Andrew also has a chapter in Sideways Through Time : An Oral History Of Hawkwind In The 1970s

I just got a tracking # from Dead dot net CS - thank you Heather! I submitted my request using the link in the Enjoying the Ride release email. The box was shipped via FedEx Smartpost which is exactly how it needed to be shipped to a PO Box if the initial carrier is FedEx. Label created morning of 5/28 and FedEx had it by that evening. It should be dropped off at the Post Office by "end of day" - for our PO that's 3-30 MDT. Headed there momentarily. No shipping notice from dead dot net. I opened a FedEx account several days ago but it does not show up there. Interestingly, I was in contact with another CS rep on 5/29 and all he told me was my order was "processing" and I should wait for a shipping notice even though at that point it was already in FedEx's possession.

Edit no package and no clue where it is in the FedEx - USPS system. Ran into the fact that FedEx service in our area is often lousy - UPS (and USPS) is far far better. Departed regional in-state FedEx Smartpost depot on 5/30 and nothing more than that. Can't get a real live CS at FedEx. FedEx tracking # not recognized by USPS. Not a happy camper.

Second edit - finally got through to a live CS person at FedEx on my 6th or 7th attempt. They were able to provide a USPS tracking # and now I know where box is at (still 300 miles away.) Probably arrive tomorrow but not scheduled until Wednesday. Not clear to me if CS at Dead dot net has access to both tracking #s but if they do they should be providing both.

Usually when I snap pix of the Dead cds for their covers to download, I do it on this one particular table. It's got a fake wood veneer so it makes the albums look kinda 'rustic' like, comparable to the American Beauty album cover, only the wood looks like a border around the cd cover art.

Anyways since this ~60th~ Big Box is already in that 'wood' color theme and motif I thought to do different by these shows. Crazy idea came to me as I hovered over the open box, was to use the larger flat foam piece that covers the removable shelf holding the swag.
Whaddaya know!? Wowza, it sure looks cool! I would describe it as sorta 'spacey' like a photo of star clusters from a telescope. Makes for a really spectacular backdrop for the cd cover photos.

My box appears to stuck in shipping limbo. Got my FedEx tracking info from CS on Sat 31st. Tracking only says label created 5/28 and that’s it. No other updates since. I can only hope it’s just delayed waiting for a full pallet or truck or something.

The waiting is difficult, but a lesson in patience nonetheless. Really looking forward to getting my ears (and hands) on this one.

Happy for all those who have received their’s.

Shipping here in limbo…

Smyler - great looking book. I hadn't heard of this, so thanks for highlighting it. Many superb bands from the early 70's underground mentioned on the cover - Amon Duul 2, Can, Man and The Groundhogs for starters. The latest addition to my pile of books to read.

Mine was originally scheduled to be delivered on Sunday. Then I got a, “No attempt made, delivery scheduled for next business day.” Actually got close enough yesterday that I could see the map of the truck in my neighborhood, and it went right by my street. Then I got a, “Your package is delayed due to operational reasons.” So, hopefully the third time’s the charm. 1030-230 delivery window.
Maybe the Grace Note database will be populated by then, and I won’t have to type in CD and track names.

I believe so. I grabbed a copy of DaP 45 during week of site migration. Email confirmation encouraged use of Shop app to track.

I didnt bother loading it, just using the tracking number and pasting it to USPS tracking, goods coming via Mail Innovations, so a spell of no visibility, came back on the radar today as having made it from Fontana to Windsor CT, which for me means it'll arrive in NH in 2 more days.

Just now I received an answer from Scott at customer service who said that my box had indeed shipped. It has shipped with DHL eCommerce. It left Whittier, CA on May 29 and is currently on it's way to the Netherlands.

Got mine today Tuesday 6/3. Had a FedEx note yesterday that something was on the way, but silence from Dead.net. Not their normal level of customer service.

Starting at the beginning. The old TEAC W-6000R still works. This is a fun little trip. It has that Owsley "you're in the room" sound to it. I was struck by the low fidelity compared to CD.

Remember how we got swag like ticket facsimiles and back stage passes in past box sets? And folks got different stuff?
Now, this box contains 4 photos. I got:
12/31/90 Oakland
July '88 Oxford, Maine
8/12/79 Red Rocks
Fillmore East 1971

Are we all getting something different?

#0278 found its way to the local Post Office this morning. The number matches the month and year of my first show - 2/3/78 Dane County - nice touch!

A beautiful presentation. Truly brings a tear or three of happiness to my eyes to be "gifted" with this. Rays of sunshine for the soul. A heartfelt "Thank you!!" to Dave L., Mark P., Jeff N., Dave. G., the others who had a hand in putting this together.

I'll have to dig out the H-K deck for the cassette. Honestly think its a fun touch that they did that! I think someone here (edit - DeadHeadBrewer) said that they didn't have a tape deck and they mentioned it to a friend, who replies "I got one!" and they're gonna get together and let it rip. That's the spirit!

May the Boxzilla deliveries continue apace!

yes sir
this is the "LIVE GD"
just like it was after Brent,
just how I remember it,
while shakin' my bones

well, you know,
what better way
to start a 60th celebration
than with, of course a
"touch of grey"
headphones on, volume up,
hair standing-up on my arms
and a tear to the eye
MAN, those were some FUN times
with the boys!

ROCK ON!

Hey now, TooMuchIsJustEnough! Your "tag" reminded me of a Tee shirt I bought at a bar after a show at The Boston Garden. Wondering if you got the same shirt?

I got the box set last Saturday, and hope you'll receive it soon. You will NOT be disappointed!

Arrived in Central New York State around noon today. Looks like FedEx really tossed it around, the compartment that holds all the sleeves has cracks and tears at the divider and corners. Sleeves were out of their places. These things never travel well...

Someone asked for a copy of Philly '78 so I'll check that out...

My box set was last seen leaving Bloomington, CA on 5/31...nothing since. Maybe they are trying to pinpoint my exact address and drop it onto my porch via drone? Or maybe she's lost and gone forever...

It was supposed to arrive today but I'm guessing that is not happening...

Just got mine, 1626 / 6000. No emails or hints it was coming like some other shipments in the past. It is an amazing box and collection and I can't wait to dig in. Not sure where I'm going first yet.

I have the same 4 pics by the way.

Hey BIGBROWNIE, My box set contained the exact same photos you listed; along with three unused tickets from 3 different shows, a DEAD 60 key chain, Refrigerator magnet, a frame-able 8x10? nice colored Enjoying The Ride poster, a map of US regions and venues selected for this box, what appears to be a "backstage pass" designed for this box set, 3 bumper stickers. And of course 60 CD's, the travel guide, an informative statement from the Owsley Stanley Foundation and the Avalon cassette. (at least they didn't send an 8 track tape!). I intend to ask my brother to copy the cassette from his hi-end Nakamichi Deck to a CD. Be Kind.............

In just exactly perfect condition. So much for going to hell in a Snowcat, have managed to stick around long enough to see the big beautiful box arrive. Note of thanks to the PTB in the great beyond for the grace of allowing me to keep enjoying the ride and remain on this plane of existence a bit longer.
While handing out thanks... Dave, Mark, Jeff, etc. Well done. Presentation very nice. Wife gave a stamp of approval, reminds me to catalog and make sure catalog is in my will. Funny Gal. Not like other girls...

No surprise in the faux wood, looks nice and hoping it can withstand the years ahead. Inside, the large plastic envelope holding what reminds me of a storefront or telephone pole handbill/poster. Artwork throughout very much like tape cases back in the day (still have roughly 750 tapes, many decorated similarly, and a few trivia sheets that were handed to me in the parking lots of Worcester, Oxford, bearing artwork as well).
Bumperstickers bring a smile of fond remembrance, as does the picture of the stuffed bear atop a rig at Oxford.
Only moment of slight surprise and a minor frown was the #5077. Clearly not handed out in the sequence of orders, unless in reverse. Ordered in the first 10 min of announcement, expecting should have been in the low hundreds is my thought, if not in the 2 digit range. No worries, has no bearing on playability.
Rest of the swag cool... tickets, passes, key chain, magnet. Our media room has several framed show posters and photographs, the accompanying mail order tickets for the show dates framed with them. Nice to see others think similarly...all memories of youthful, free spirited good times worthy of preservation.
Tour guide looks great, and I enjoy reading show notes and that sort of thing while listening to specific shows. Also nice for the enlightenment of the generations to come, that end up with these boxes some day down the road, when our rides have come to a close.
All in all, nothing left to do but bask in the music and smile, smile, smile.

It's real, and it's spectacular. Thank you, Dave, Marc, Rhino, et al.

What's odd is that after watching the front yard all day I had gone into the bathroom, then heard a knock, so hurried out, assuming it was FedEx come a-calling . . . it was a very lovely young woman who was asking if I would be interested in any insect control. I politely told her I would not, so she smiled and we parted amiably. I went back into the bathroom, came out a few minutes later, and there on the steps was the box!

Now to call up the friend with a tape deck and get this party started! DeadVikes, you should be getting yours any moment now, too?

And there was no shipping notice; when I checked my order status yesterday via the order confirmation e-mail I got a 404 error. So the thing to do is just forget your cares and gently wait . . .

Be kind, then rewind.
