When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

I was on the job at an all day presentation that I was video taping, running the camera and recording. I learned about it during a break at 11 am. It was hard for me to concentrate the rest of the day. I felt a big hole in my life. Later friends gathered at our house and we all went over to GG park to join the heads gathering together in grief. There was a large circle of heads on the grass, with lots of candles and pictures of Jerry, and people singing along to guys with guitars and drums.

The day the news of Jerry's death broke, I was starting a new job in a new city and pretty overwhelmed by everything that entailed. I was unpacking boxes, meeting new people, shaking lots of hands and nodding vigorously as my new bosses explained my new duties, and I didn't have much time to think about it.

Until later. That evening there was a gathering of people in the park near my new apartment, so I went down there to listen to the songs and read the signs and try to process the whole thing.

    I'm still processing.

I, too, was surprised by huge public outpouring of grief. My primary show-going years were the late '70s and early '80s, a time when the Dead was widely considered a cult band that was barely relevant to the music biz or mainstream culture. By 1995, I had not been to a show in years, and I didn't realize how big the "cult" had become. But the public reaction to Jerry's death--the front page stories, the mass gatherings, the musical tributes--was a lot like when John Lennon was killed. And that was when it first hit me that the Dead's audience was damn near as big as the Beatles.

And I think it's bigger now than it was then.

TTB was great at Red Rocks, btw. I also traveled up to Bend to visit a friend and caught a show (just one of the two) there. It was super cool to see some of the same folks I had met at RR, some of whom were following TTB through several cities on the current tour. Strangers stopping strangers. High fives, hugs, and other things were exchanged. Reminded me of the olden days, it did.

Well, yesterday actually. I can remember that Jerry's death was reported on the national news and was front page news the following day. Apart from my one Deadhead friend, this surprised everyone else I knew. The Dead obviously were nowhere near as well known in the U.K. as The States, and most of my friends assumed they were just a strange acquired taste of mine. An obscure cult band from the 60's with a very limited following. They didn't know anything about you lot.

It’s a fact they have never made any effort to send the box numbers in order of purchase. I too ordered within 10 minutes of it being public. I have purchased every release they have released through the site, almost always within minutes of it going for sale. I have never come close to a low number. I just looked at Dave’s #1 - 10775/12000 🤣🤣. That said while I’m definitely a collector ( my view on the perspective of reissue, “it’s ok” is known. They made a promise an are sticking to it at least with the complete release) I never tripped on the number. I was glad to get the music and hoohah.
I am loving this as I do with all releases but I’ll be honest the theme does seem to be looking for a reason to be. I like another poster here wish they had fill in the blanks(space) a little more. The Fillmore East could have been complete. I’m a bit skeptical about their reason of the tapes were no good as they also tended to be with other artists 🤑😥😆. But it’s ok. While I have my preferences of course I really enjoy the shows and am lucky to have been to any number of them.

First things first, everything okay with the bathroom breaks?

Yes, mine arrived this afternoon. Still at work but FedEx sent me a picture and it is there.

Will be taking a look in a couple hours.

I had barely reached the bathroom when the knock on the door came, so after gently shooing the young salesperson off the stoop I returned to begin what I had not had time to begin the first time. All is well in that regard, but at the ages many of us have reached, that's no given! :)

Well that’s what I was thinking right after I pulled the trigger right when the box went on sale. It’s been sitting by my reading chair since Friday with me contemplating unloading it rather than keeping it. I’ve got about 10 box sets and been collecting official releases since Dicks Picks 5. I was waiting til I started to hear some joy in the feed, which really started rolling in today. Anyone got some pearls to help with my dilemma?

Good to hear DHB!

This box is a beast. Hoping to dig in on Thursday.

Hope you all enjoy it out there.

My wife loves the Dead almost as much as I do. And it's a good thing! I didn't know what she was going to say when she saw the new box set, and I thought she might get mad. She would've been well within rights to point out that we have numerous other financial needs, and I could've used that $600 ($700, really) to fix the cracked windshield on the Toyota, maybe buy a new clothes dryer, yada yada. Instead, she just goes: "This is so awesome!"

She loved all the swag, immediately put the fridge magnet on the fridge and flipping through the travel guide. She loves Pig, so I put on the Capitol Theater disc that has the killer Hard to Handle and Good Lovin. Next thing I know she's sitting in my special chair, the one I set up right between the stereo speakers so you get the best possible stereo image, listening with her eyes closed and big smile on her face.

I love that woman. Amazing that she puts up with me. I ain't rich or good lookin, but at least I'm dumb!

So much fun listening to this set. I played the Greek show straight through, was surprised to realize that the real highlight for me might've been that Stella. Just a soaring bridge on that one. Listened to some of the '69 this morning, some Red Rocks a little while ago. All of it great.

Feeling the gratitude here in La Casa del Crow. Hope everybody who's still waiting gets their box soon.

I have a friend with MNUFC (soccer) season tickets, and he was in a fit like yours while he agonized over whether to sell his tickets for the recent MNUFC match when Messi came to town. I said, "So, you love watching soccer, and your dog is named after Lionel Messi, but you might sell your tickets instead of seeing the GOAT so that you can have some money?" I asked, "On your deathbed, will you relish the day you watched in person while Messi played soccer, or will you relish the couple hundred dollars you stuck in your checking account and paid the gas bill with?"

I haven't seen him since the match to ask what he did with his tickets, but a wise friend told me once, "There's only two things in life--doing stuff, and remembering it" DO this box, so that you might remember it later. You will never remember what you did with the money you got from selling this opportunity to bask in the glory of the band we all cherish so damn much.

And as my dad says--free advice is usually worth what you paid for it. :)

100% right. If there is some form of consciousness after death, then the only thing you can take is your memories.
If you're laying in your grave and still think about money you've missed the point of life. Sure, easy to say when you have the greenbacks while alive, but even the poor can have great memories to carry them on that infinite journey when we shuffle off.

I just hope I know enough songs to carry me forever.

I've been watching Mobland on whatever channel it's on. Show started the other night, with the music over the scene and I was hey I know this voice, that's Johnny Cash. Whipped up the phone and shazamed it.

Was a tune called "God's Gonna Cut You Down". I thought it was great, never heard. Thought the timber of Johnny's voice was incredible.

Figured I'd pass along a tune name, if you never heard and you like Johnny.

Oh, BTW, I like Mobland :-)

Lowest number yet for a release, by a long shot. Like front row!

Spot listened to the '81 Hampton and Hartford shows for a litmus test and was overwhelmed by how great they sounded. Massive and full of GD richness. Dare I say perfect?

The individual detailing for the artwork on all the cases/sleeves/discs is appreciated. I'll probably pull 'em to shelve with the DaP releases and then store the box, as it is such a BIG BOY.

Formatting the book like an old travel guide is a nice touch ;-)

Beautiful box, not sure of the longevity of the faux wood, was hoping for something more rigid like Boxzilla or the E72 Trunk but it looks amazing inside and out. Trinkets are top notch. I value the boxsets at price per show so this puts it in the middle of the boxset pack at $30 a show with E72 being the cheapest and HCS being the most expensive.
As I was ripping I started listening with Fillmore West but the perfectionist in me was distracted by getting the title to the format I like as well as standardizing the disc counting to be consistent across the box - I settled with "# of 60" and start off the show listing as "yy-mm-dd ETR_60th Venue City State". I found the artwork at flickr under /photos/104729480@N03/albums/72177720326563000/

The Fillmore West sounded good over my computer speakers, looking forward to a more serious listening session.
Only notice I got was via fedex, still waiting on the T-shirt...

It's great to hear most everyone is getting their box... it sounds great. Unfortunately all the shared joy is a special form of torture for me as my box appears to be lost.

Dead dot Net says it was shipped. Fedex says they have not received it. Tracking number shows only "label created 5/28."

I hope if it is lost or crushed or something that they held a few in reserve and can give me another one...

This is a mega-set. Despite the appearance of a "wooden" box, I was virtually certain it would be thicker cardboard. S/N 4342.

Arrived in great shape, but I don't understand why I got no notice of the shipment. I always get them when the last Dave's Picks Edition is dispatched. I guess that is a nit.

Like others are saying, I got it without any notification it had shipped. I think this is a 1st of my 30-40 items from Dead.net. The only reason I post something is that FedEx left it in front of the garage, where there's no overhang. Typically delivery folk walk 20 more feet & leave packages on the stoop, which is covered.

No big deal on a typical day, but we had heavy storms forecasted for about an hour after it was dropped off. ....And we got 'em! So I was extremely lucky that coming back from lunch - & low & behold - spotted the package just before the downpour.

I don't get much from FedEx, but expected better. Just a word of caution: Watch for that box like a hawk...or a crow. Whatever.

Just popped in the 69 shows. Wow, is all I can say right now. Very impressed with Bear's recording is the 1st thing that's striking me here.

Still not a robot.

That's all I'm saying, really.

I'm probably about 10 years younger than you, but I feel that time is catching up to me now and I sure wouldn't mind seeing those golden era (for me) shows released sooner rather than later.

There has been a ton of music released over the years and that's a grate thing, and I sure do appreciate it, but while in years past I would collect it all, that has since fallen by the wayside and I now only buy when it appeals to me.

There are still a few shows I am hoping to see released and I check back every now and then, but honestly I am not fanatical about the other releases any longer and will not pull the trigger just for anything.

Something Dave and Co. should keep in mind as the fan base ages.

Many of these (mine included) arrived with nary a peep from anyone, save the initial order confirmation.

Like a first kiss, not knowing when it might arrive only sweetens the moment it does.

All is well, safely rest, your box is nigh . . .

I got this magnificent set last weekend, after getting a notice from FEDEX it would delivered Saturday. It was, undamaged. A beautiful box set, I think the best ever. However when I started ripping them to put on my iPhone, I was shocked to find that of the total of 60 discs, only 5-6 of them had any data of any kind on them. When I insert them they come up "no disc or track information available. Do you want to continue to download". When I put them in my CD player same thing happens? WTF?? The discs play just fine, magnificent sound quality. The disc labels are fine, I can read them okay. Has anyone else encountered this? I guess I'm going to have to manually enter ALL the data so I can play it on my iPhone........

I think I was just a little naive believing the Parcelforce tracker. They still say the item has left the country of origin, but that was on 28th May! Looking at the DHL tracker, who will transfer it to Parcelforce, they say that, as of today, it is still in California. Maybe the end of next week, maybe not. It’s still something to look forward to.

Love hearing what everyone is listening to first. I'm going with '93 the Cap centre. The new songs (at the time) don't get enough love and I really enjoy them. Lazy river road, Liberty, Eternity and Days between all good stuff! Hey, throw in that Playin' into Dark star and I'm all game. Jerry seems engaged and the band is tight!

The CD’s don’t come with the song names embedded in the data. You either have to type it yourself or download it.

What ICECRMCNKD said. If you wait a bit, someone will rip them all, enter the data, and upload the data to the GraceNote database. Once that’s done and you try and rip them again, the data will be there. Since it’s 60 discs, that may take a while.

I got the box on Tuesday and the album titles and unique inconsistencies were there. Since you already tried to load them, I don't know if you have to rediscover, but if you do, this may help:

To make iTunes look for CD information again, you can try these steps:
Select tracks in iTunes
Select Get CD Track Names from the Advanced menu
Insert a disk
Select the disk in iTunes
Select Get CD Track Names again from the Advanced menu

You could try Exact Audio Copy that has the option to use the information on the cd
It's the first thing the cd player reads to work out start/stop times emphasis on/off etc
Or...you could cut and paste the information on the Wikipedia page which will give you something to do on a wet Sunday afternoon!

Good morning rockers!!!

First thing I checked out was the Boston 72 discs. There's some great stuff there!! Then backtracked to the FW69, oh my goodness............

Pretty unhappy about the chop job on 2/20/71, some amazing stuff ended up on the cutting room floor. I'm a big Other One guy, but this one doesn't move me. At this show, the excellence lies in the etheral performance of some of the shorter songs, especially the Pigpen material like Big Boss man and Next Time You See Me. And of course, Truckin'.........

Overall impression: too big, sprawling, lacks focus, no unifying common theme, glad I bought it.........

Music is God's gift to man, the only art of Heaven given to earth, the only art of earth we take to Heaven.....

Rock on,

Doc
Music,
The greatest good that mortals know
And all of heaven we have hear below

No confirmation, Fedex says "Label Created" for the last 5 days.
Contacted Dead.net customer service for some kind of confirmation, no reply.
Nothing left to do but wait, I guess...

Just got the email for the limited prints from each decade. They're all great but I love the Stanley Mouse one. But they had sold out by the time I finished reading the email! I guess that was the pre-order for the set of 6 so I wouldn't have gone there anyway but wow, that was fast. We are everywhere. Good luck on order day if you want one.
Cheers
Edit: The print representing 2005-2015 by Helen Kennedy is the winner!

Thanks icecrmcnkd, I suppose mine did as well. FINALLY! I received my official dead dot net shipping notification 7 hours before it arrived on my doorstep! It is truly a boxzilla! I opened it on my lunch break, pulled the book out and started reading. Back in the office now. I think I’m going to start with the cassette first just to see if the old Yamaha tape deck still works. From there, I’ll see where the road takes me…

Happy listening, all!

All get the box in the next few days. I have been busy, but have peaked inside. Looks like a lot of fun for a long time. I understand the anxiety created by a big expenditure on an important item. So far, I have had only modest anxiety when a couple of Dave's shipped with wrong address. Hoping to get it corrected soon. Love hearing reports of folks jumping in at different time points. Can't wait to get going and catch up.

Nearly 60 years after it was recorded, a legendary early club set from Sly & the Family Stone will finally be officially released. "The First Family: Live at Winchester Cathedral 1967" will be released July 18 on High Moon Records.

I finally got 2 tracking numbers from the customer service, by request. One for the US and one for Germany, both DHL.

Funny thing is, DHL US stated departure twice, one on June 2nd and also 3d!
DHL Germany (local tracking number) confirmed arrival in Germany twice at the exact same times.

Hope the box is at the local customs office now for processing.

Good luck to everybody who's waiting, fun to everyone who has it already.

Cheers
(New arrival Greif Hell Vollbier)

Very pleased with the sound.
Hope that there are a lot of 80’s recordings in the Vault that can be cleaned up like this.
And especially, Summer ‘84 and Summer ‘85 Boxes.

Now on 10-3-94. Sound quality is as expected for the era, but doesn’t sound like a monitor mix which is a bonus. Time for a Vince era DaP. My preference being 3-30-94.

After some back and forth between FedEx and Dead dot Net CS I have learned (I think) that my box has yet to ship! This explains why there have been no tracking updates. Why it hasn't shipped a week after intro? I can only assume it's a logistics issue with Gnarlywood. I'm guessing they fill one pallet/container/truck at a time and only pass it off to FedEx when it's full. I guess my box didn't make the cut-off and is waiting for a full whatever. If this is the case, then it's likely something out of control of our friends here. It sucks, mostly because I had built up strong anticipation for this box (and I'm only a seven hour drive up the coast), but there's nothing I can do about it but wait.

So to all who don't yet have their box, it may be held up in a similar situation.

In the meantime, I went to DaP 54 for comfort. What a show!
