When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

I was on the job at an all day presentation that I was video taping, running the camera and recording. I learned about it during a break at 11 am. It was hard for me to concentrate the rest of the day. I felt a big hole in my life. Later friends gathered at our house and we all went over to GG park to join the heads gathering together in grief. There was a large circle of heads on the grass, with lots of candles and pictures of Jerry, and people singing along to guys with guitars and drums.

The day the news of Jerry's death broke, I was starting a new job in a new city and pretty overwhelmed by everything that entailed. I was unpacking boxes, meeting new people, shaking lots of hands and nodding vigorously as my new bosses explained my new duties, and I didn't have much time to think about it.

Until later. That evening there was a gathering of people in the park near my new apartment, so I went down there to listen to the songs and read the signs and try to process the whole thing.

    I'm still processing.

I, too, was surprised by huge public outpouring of grief. My primary show-going years were the late '70s and early '80s, a time when the Dead was widely considered a cult band that was barely relevant to the music biz or mainstream culture. By 1995, I had not been to a show in years, and I didn't realize how big the "cult" had become. But the public reaction to Jerry's death--the front page stories, the mass gatherings, the musical tributes--was a lot like when John Lennon was killed. And that was when it first hit me that the Dead's audience was damn near as big as the Beatles.

And I think it's bigger now than it was then.

TTB was great at Red Rocks, btw. I also traveled up to Bend to visit a friend and caught a show (just one of the two) there. It was super cool to see some of the same folks I had met at RR, some of whom were following TTB through several cities on the current tour. Strangers stopping strangers. High fives, hugs, and other things were exchanged. Reminded me of the olden days, it did.

Well, yesterday actually. I can remember that Jerry's death was reported on the national news and was front page news the following day. Apart from my one Deadhead friend, this surprised everyone else I knew. The Dead obviously were nowhere near as well known in the U.K. as The States, and most of my friends assumed they were just a strange acquired taste of mine. An obscure cult band from the 60's with a very limited following. They didn't know anything about you lot.

August 12, 1979, Red Rocks. Chosen because I wanted to go with one that I'm not familiar with but still from an earlier Brent selection. I also recall really liking the August 13 Denver show that followed.

And this also sounds fantastic. Nicely balanced, monster wave dynamics, crispy at the top end, rich definition at the bottom.

I've always figured the box sets were meant to be a step above the Dave's releases. And so now, this 60th anniversary bemouth as a step above those annual box sets.

Oh man. That was fun. Interesting little break after the stand alone Lost Sailor, but bearings were found. Black Peter started to build into a Cosmic Charlie there at the tail end.

Tomorrow I'm head to NYC for the Fillmore.

Is this the worst sounding show ever released.. ? (nice Space, BTW..) - LOVE the (rest of the) box.. BW from Copenhagen

First show I pulled as well Fivebranch. August of 79 with Brent and man you can really hear and feel the difference. We start getting the Go To Heaven tunes and Saint would have to wait until the end of month. Really enjoyed this show. Alpine 80 is next. Short show and I guess that is why Dave gave us part of 81 on disc 3.
Were you at this one Firstshow?

Enjoying all the comments, especially Docs. I am so busy, it might take a week before I dig in, never less the liner notes. Again, first world problems.

Keep up the good times folks, I plan to read each and every post as I always do.

Yessir, I was there about 5th row looking right down at that new guy with the long hair killing it on the keyboards. Who is this guy we were saying. Hendrixfreak was also in attendance IIRC. And Nitecat too. We all were saddened when the next two nights went to McNichols as it rained. Those two shows had some transformative moments but the 8-12 show wins I think. HF may have a different take on that? I just remember the energy Brent seemed to bring and the interactions of he and Jerry especially. Jerry smiling and giving Brent that "go man, go" look when he was soloing. Great set list too. 8-12-79 also tops the next visit to our area too, the 15th anniversary show in Boulder, of which I saw the Sunday show 6-8-80. The 6-7-80 setlist looks a little better so maybe I missed the better of the two?
Thanks for the memories DV!

I think it's PCM SBD, Audience sounds distant like the stage mic's picking up the crowed between songs.

Started with 85. Big Boy Pete.

Sampled a number of shows.

Read Doc’s comments. Succinct and accurate. No need for me to reiterate.

Let’s go Oilers.

I have time to dive into the box this afternoon, and am fairly certain now that I'll go from the most-recent show back in time to 1969, except for the cassette, which I'll listen to whenever my new friend with the cassette deck can have me over for listening.

VGuy and others--the fam-damily and I are heading to Vegas this summer, in order to make a circle tour of the Grand Canyon and the Utah parks. Any tips/tricks/advice, please? Should we hit the Hoover Dam? (I won't hit it too hard if we do--har.) I'm happy to hit lesser-known places, as I'm guessing all that beautiful rock looks great everywhere, and not just in the most-popular places?

Hey Oroboros, I remember your saga of Red Rocks and the Summer of '78, but somehow missed your tales from 8/12/79 and the '79 run. I don't think anybody'd mind if you reposted it here for us stragglers. Thanks?

Like the band is in the audience! haha

with Jeff. Would love to hear a retelling of tragedy narrowly averted or not averted.

Sabbath's final show now available streaming world wide.

Can't decide. Was a huge fan late'70's but will have to see price and details. Hoping the three can still jam and Oz can at least sing a few songs. Tickets for event sold out in 16 minutes per the band. Will it be a money grab or an exciting but sad goodbye.

This is in regards to the Alpine Valley 1980 show.
So, I've gotta know! There is an uncredited 'Jam' (nameless?) in the segued end section of the song "He's gone" where it would usually blend into "The Other One" or "Truckin" on any given set list. I've started to notice more of these as my Dead collection builds {Built To Last} and this particular 'Jam' seems to be mostly in the early Brent years.

Though it doesn't always sound exactly the same, or stem from any one specific song exclusively, it has a familiar groove to it. To me this 'Jam' is more significant than say the smaller few minute versions of like the 3/10 1981 MsG NYc show. The Alpine Jam in question seems more like a song in itself such as the "Caution" that succeeds "He's Gone" from Nassau 5/6 1981 {DiP#13} for example.

Am I trippen too hard on this?! Anyways, just was wondering if the 'Jam' had a name.
Another release to reference for my querry would be the 12/4/79 Chicago show {DaP#31} and the 'Jam' after "Estimated >> Frank's Tower" couplet. These jams I speculate on also always seem to precede a 'Drums' segment.

Jeff

so type in

Fire on the Mountain, 1979, as told by Oro

into the site search box, and you should get there.

Too lengthy to post and 'hey now' wouldn't let me post it, however Marye rescued me and posted the story in honor of this show being included in in the new Big Box!.

in 1977 that I delivered the Oroboros (dragon) to the Winterland stage door.

And then Jerry and I discussed it on Feb 4th 1978, in the hotel café, the morning after an outstanding Madison Wisconsin show (Phil bombed us into the zone during the opener "Cold Rain and Snow" the night before).

My brush with greatness. Beacon of light and one of the funniest persons I ever met.

That summer was our first Red Rocks show (the Dead and mine) in 1978. Then the 1979 Red Rocks show that following summer with Brent (included in this big Box) that several of us attended.

Damn! I love the stage banter after "Wave That Flag" during the 1973 Nassau show!
Jerry first mentions the dilemma about attendees throwing joints up on the stage and how better to light one up and pass it along in the crowd. To which Phil bellows in concurrence about not wasting the weed cuz the band was already high!
Bobby chimes in about being high on the vibe from the audience.

Still,... Enjoying The Ride!

There speaks the voice of experience. Amazing when it happens, no recollection of it after it has passed.

I ran into this same problem with Dave's 54 and Ronmarley1 let me know that Grace Note hadn't updated the info, I had to google Grace Note! Anyway I tried again a few hours later and the info was there when I downloaded or is it uploaded it to I Tunes. Don 't know how that will help you on your CD player but this has happened before and I don't know why it wouldn't be taken care of before the release. Also I think it's kinda lame that there is no cover art when you download it to I Tunes either. That's on almost all the GD releases.

I started with the 4/5/69 Avalon show on cassette. It’s great. I wondered if it was poor quality so they decided to get gimmicky and do the tape thing. It’s not. It should be made available on CD and/or streaming. Typical 69 fare, but the china cat->doing that rag is awesome. Solid duprees->mountains->dark star->st. stephen. Overall, happy to have it, just wish it was a CD as I never listen to cassettes anymore. Onto Fillmore West…

In the house. Beautiful box. Shipped the cassette out to an anloag to digital conversion service to get a cd and digital file.

Going to Cracker, Cheap Trick - ! - and Big Head Todd today at Red Rocks.

80 degrees and clear, sunny skies - plus my bud has a handicapped parking pass (yes, it's legit) so we can pre-game in style.

Life's been good to me (so far).

Listened to the entire show Thursday night. Then listened to Around and Around again. That’s a grate jam. Then listened to set 2 again. Grate sound and a good choice for this Box. Confirms what those who went to shows during the Vince years already know.

Ultra-Matrix, first few songs are rough but then the sound settles in to what is expected for a recording from ‘83. Haven’t checked yet if I have a torrent of the show to compare sound quality.
Danehead, not the worst sounding release ever, I think that may belong to 7-31-82 set 1 from 30Trips.

3-17-93
Talk about unnamed jams, check out Space around the 7 minute mark.

Heading outside for the rest of the day.
Starting with the Grease tonight.

"So do we know for a fact if there are differences in how ultra-matrix cassettes were made; either a) from mixing the Beta HIFI tracks after the show"

Beta HIFI, were 4-track recorders where 1-track could be used to record the audience too make a Matrix later on.. Dec. '86 through '91 were on the fly Ulta-Matrix.

Thanks for the heads up. Grabbed Festival Express and the Movie. Already own three copies of the movie, starting with video tape. Think upgrading to Blu Ray matters? Hoping better opening scene graphics for larger screen TVs and maybe even a touch better sound. Nothing like recurring revenue...
