When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.
ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.
With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.
These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.
It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.
Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.
First Full Listen
August 12, 1979, Red Rocks. Chosen because I wanted to go with one that I'm not familiar with but still from an earlier Brent selection. I also recall really liking the August 13 Denver show that followed.
And this also sounds fantastic. Nicely balanced, monster wave dynamics, crispy at the top end, rich definition at the bottom.
I've always figured the box sets were meant to be a step above the Dave's releases. And so now, this 60th anniversary bemouth as a step above those annual box sets.
While You're ETR...
It would be cool if everyone mapped their personal tour?
I was in Boston today, tomorrow heading to Shoreline...
August 12, 1979; Red Rocks, Morrison, CO
Oh man. That was fun. Interesting little break after the stand alone Lost Sailor, but bearings were found. Black Peter started to build into a Cosmic Charlie there at the tail end.
Tomorrow I'm head to NYC for the Fillmore.
As I deal with FOMO....
....the Sly release Gary brought up looks nice.
Ebbs and flows.
Frost 1983..
Is this the worst sounding show ever released.. ? (nice Space, BTW..) - LOVE the (rest of the) box.. BW from Copenhagen
Red Rocks 79
First show I pulled as well Fivebranch. August of 79 with Brent and man you can really hear and feel the difference. We start getting the Go To Heaven tunes and Saint would have to wait until the end of month. Really enjoyed this show. Alpine 80 is next. Short show and I guess that is why Dave gave us part of 81 on disc 3.
Were you at this one Firstshow?
Box received yesterday
sitting on the front porch. My house was leaning off it's foundation which took some tricky engineering to get it inside without tipping over the house. First world problems, I realize.
Enjoying all the comments, especially Docs. I am so busy, it might take a week before I dig in, never less the liner notes. Again, first world problems.
Keep up the good times folks, I plan to read each and every post as I always do.
Peace and Love. JimInMD

Pre-ordered Sly and the First Family yesterday.
Can't wait to hear his early stuff.
As written before, did see Larry Graham with Prince in 1998. Funky!
PFunk played our arena 4 times between 1976 and 1979. Saw 1977 and 1978. Seriously FUNKY! Got to see the Mothership land!
DV 8-12-79
Yessir, I was there about 5th row looking right down at that new guy with the long hair killing it on the keyboards. Who is this guy we were saying. Hendrixfreak was also in attendance IIRC. And Nitecat too. We all were saddened when the next two nights went to McNichols as it rained. Those two shows had some transformative moments but the 8-12 show wins I think. HF may have a different take on that? I just remember the energy Brent seemed to bring and the interactions of he and Jerry especially. Jerry smiling and giving Brent that "go man, go" look when he was soloing. Great set list too. 8-12-79 also tops the next visit to our area too, the 15th anniversary show in Boulder, of which I saw the Sunday show 6-8-80. The 6-7-80 setlist looks a little better so maybe I missed the better of the two?
Thanks for the memories DV!
Cheers
Gary & Sly
I ordered also.
FYI - I have 4 fillmore shows from 68,,, not sure where I got them, but they sound alright.
They did 4 shows, 2 a day (early and Late). Not much difference between set list.
'83 Frost Audience?
I think it's PCM SBD, Audience sounds distant like the stage mic's picking up the crowed between songs.
Port Chester..
These 3 discs are worth the price of the box alone.. the "Ripple" will melt your heart..
Red Rocks August 12, 1979
I was at those with you, DV and 1st show.
I shared my remembrance of that 1979 run (along with disaster narrowly averted) on the Oroboros thread.
Check it out.
"Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself."
Oh Yes Oro-1
The cabin fire!
A cautionary tale.
Vivid details that reminded me of a similar place I was at near Estes Park one time. Only without the tragedy narrowly averted. We will survive!
Cheers
Back to Front
I have time to dive into the box this afternoon, and am fairly certain now that I'll go from the most-recent show back in time to 1969, except for the cassette, which I'll listen to whenever my new friend with the cassette deck can have me over for listening.
VGuy and others--the fam-damily and I are heading to Vegas this summer, in order to make a circle tour of the Grand Canyon and the Utah parks. Any tips/tricks/advice, please? Should we hit the Hoover Dam? (I won't hit it too hard if we do--har.) I'm happy to hit lesser-known places, as I'm guessing all that beautiful rock looks great everywhere, and not just in the most-popular places?
Repost your Red Rocks '79 Tale?
Hey Oroboros, I remember your saga of Red Rocks and the Summer of '78, but somehow missed your tales from 8/12/79 and the '79 run. I don't think anybody'd mind if you reposted it here for us stragglers. Thanks?
I Am
with Jeff. Would love to hear a retelling of tragedy narrowly averted or not averted.
Sabbath's final show now available streaming world wide.
Can't decide. Was a huge fan late'70's but will have to see price and details. Hoping the three can still jam and Oz can at least sing a few songs. Tickets for event sold out in 16 minutes per the band. Will it be a money grab or an exciting but sad goodbye.
Nameless Jams?
This is in regards to the Alpine Valley 1980 show.
So, I've gotta know! There is an uncredited 'Jam' (nameless?) in the segued end section of the song "He's gone" where it would usually blend into "The Other One" or "Truckin" on any given set list. I've started to notice more of these as my Dead collection builds {Built To Last} and this particular 'Jam' seems to be mostly in the early Brent years.
Though it doesn't always sound exactly the same, or stem from any one specific song exclusively, it has a familiar groove to it. To me this 'Jam' is more significant than say the smaller few minute versions of like the 3/10 1981 MsG NYc show. The Alpine Jam in question seems more like a song in itself such as the "Caution" that succeeds "He's Gone" from Nassau 5/6 1981 {DiP#13} for example.
Am I trippen too hard on this?! Anyways, just was wondering if the 'Jam' had a name.
Another release to reference for my querry would be the 12/4/79 Chicago show {DaP#31} and the 'Jam' after "Estimated >> Frank's Tower" couplet. These jams I speculate on also always seem to precede a 'Drums' segment.
That post was added to the 'Jerry & the Dragon' thread
Jeff
so type in
Fire on the Mountain, 1979, as told by Oro
into the site search box, and you should get there.
Too lengthy to post and 'hey now' wouldn't let me post it, however Marye rescued me and posted the story in honor of this show being included in in the new Big Box!.
" You see the hut, yet you ask, where should I go for shelter."
Deadhead brewer Fear And Loathing....
....Definitely check out The Valley Of Fire. But early in the day. Gets brutal during the summer. Hoover Dam tour is legit.
Shout! Video Sale
Hey now, Festival Express and the GD movie are on sale at Shout's Hidden Gems Sale through June 16. We now return you to your regular local programming...
That would have been NYE show
in 1977 that I delivered the Oroboros (dragon) to the Winterland stage door.
And then Jerry and I discussed it on Feb 4th 1978, in the hotel café, the morning after an outstanding Madison Wisconsin show (Phil bombed us into the zone during the opener "Cold Rain and Snow" the night before).
My brush with greatness. Beacon of light and one of the funniest persons I ever met.
That summer was our first Red Rocks show (the Dead and mine) in 1978. Then the 1979 Red Rocks show that following summer with Brent (included in this big Box) that several of us attended.
"Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself."
RONMARLEY1
But when I put them in a standalone CD player nothing will show up there. It says "audio CD" and "Track 1, Track 2...etc". A download won't solve that.
Jabberin' Joints Scoob!
Damn! I love the stage banter after "Wave That Flag" during the 1973 Nassau show!
Jerry first mentions the dilemma about attendees throwing joints up on the stage and how better to light one up and pass it along in the crowd. To which Phil bellows in concurrence about not wasting the weed cuz the band was already high!
Bobby chimes in about being high on the vibe from the audience.
Still,... Enjoying The Ride!
IVHS72-Track Names
Hmmmm, you’re right there. Not sure what to make of that.
Grand Opening
Head first dive into the box. Exploring 1976 right now!
And, yes, I know there’s no show from ‘76. 1976/6000 is the one sent to me.
They didn't embed the song titles on the CD's?....
....thats kinda lame.
RONMARLEY1
Learned something today. I'm re-ripping the discs again and the info is there. Not sure about my car though. I don't have CarPlay and my iPhone doesn't integrate with the car stereo, so I rely on discs and a USB drive I have.
Information
Cds have a thing called the PQ code - look it up
Try Exact Audio Copy
And stop ripping as mp3s - they give you cancer
Missing disc..
Sadly, my box was short of a disc.. Whom do I ask to send me one ? Is it "the good doc. Rhino" - or.. ?
Rasta5Ziggy
There speaks the voice of experience. Amazing when it happens, no recollection of it after it has passed.
Song Titles
I ran into this same problem with Dave's 54 and Ronmarley1 let me know that Grace Note hadn't updated the info, I had to google Grace Note! Anyway I tried again a few hours later and the info was there when I downloaded or is it uploaded it to I Tunes. Don 't know how that will help you on your CD player but this has happened before and I don't know why it wouldn't be taken care of before the release. Also I think it's kinda lame that there is no cover art when you download it to I Tunes either. That's on almost all the GD releases.
Mild Freak Out
I put the first CD in, Apple Music read it, but when I started the import, it failed. Tried another disc, same result. “Well fuck.” Tried a few troubleshooting tasks without luck. Finally ticked the “Use error correcting…” box and the first three discs imported just fine.
Phew!
So far…
I started with the 4/5/69 Avalon show on cassette. It’s great. I wondered if it was poor quality so they decided to get gimmicky and do the tape thing. It’s not. It should be made available on CD and/or streaming. Typical 69 fare, but the china cat->doing that rag is awesome. Solid duprees->mountains->dark star->st. stephen. Overall, happy to have it, just wish it was a CD as I never listen to cassettes anymore. Onto Fillmore West…
I couldn't resist...

In the house. Beautiful box. Shipped the cassette out to an anloag to digital conversion service to get a cd and digital file.
Going to Cracker, Cheap Trick - ! - and Big Head Todd today at Red Rocks.
80 degrees and clear, sunny skies - plus my bud has a handicapped parking pass (yes, it's legit) so we can pre-game in style.
Life's been good to me (so far).

Updates
10-3-94
Listened to the entire show Thursday night. Then listened to Around and Around again. That’s a grate jam. Then listened to set 2 again. Grate sound and a good choice for this Box. Confirms what those who went to shows during the Vince years already know.
8-20-83
Ultra-Matrix, first few songs are rough but then the sound settles in to what is expected for a recording from ‘83. Haven’t checked yet if I have a torrent of the show to compare sound quality.
Danehead, not the worst sounding release ever, I think that may belong to 7-31-82 set 1 from 30Trips.
3-17-93
Talk about unnamed jams, check out Space around the 7 minute mark.
Heading outside for the rest of the day.
Starting with the Grease tonight.
Sony PCM-F1 Beta
"So do we know for a fact if there are differences in how ultra-matrix cassettes were made; either a) from mixing the Beta HIFI tracks after the show"
Beta HIFI, were 4-track recorders where 1-track could be used to record the audience too make a Matrix later on.. Dec. '86 through '91 were on the fly Ulta-Matrix.
NiteCat
Thanks for the heads up. Grabbed Festival Express and the Movie. Already own three copies of the movie, starting with video tape. Think upgrading to Blu Ray matters? Hoping better opening scene graphics for larger screen TVs and maybe even a touch better sound. Nothing like recurring revenue...
Thanks so much Oro
The perspective means a lot to me. Now let's see how long I can remember.
Again, thanks and wanted the jealousy to be documented.
