    October 1 - October 7, 2007
Heading into October, we have some terrific Grateful Dead music to cover this week, including a good selection from the brilliant September-October, 1976 tour.

Our first track this week is from Springfield, MA, on 10/2/72, and features a slightly different main jam for the era, which is to say no Dark Star or Other One. Instead, the band embark on a purposeful, efficient jam of Truckin’>Jam>Morning Dew, with lots of exploration throughout. This is the final night of one of the greatest tours of the band’s first 10 years, a run that would pick back up a couple of weeks later in St. Louis (with a quick stop at Winterland on 10/9/72). Many consider this to be one the best tours in the band’s history, and with three Dick’s Picks from the tour already released (DP 11, DP 23 and DP 36), there is a good case to be made for that claim.

Next we’ll step into 1976, during the band’s second major tour after their return to the stage in June. From 10/1/76 in Indianapolis, we have the second set jam, a typically unique 1976 sequence featuring Dancing In The Street>Drums>The Wheel>Ship Of Fools>Dancing In The Street>Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad>One More Saturday Night. 1976 was filled was crazy and inspired second set sequences like this. From the next night in Cincinnati, we have the first set closing combination of Let It Grow>Might As Well; 1976 was a banner year for Let It Grow, and this one is no exception to that year’s hot versions. Also from 10/2/76 in Cincinnati is the second set jam featuring Dancing In The Street>Drums>The Other One>Stella Blue>The Other One>Sugar Magnolia (we hope you don’t mind two Dancing In The Streets this week). The head and the tail of this jam are missing from the master reels, but the 40+ minutes in between are certainly worth hearing. Finally from 1976, we have three selections from the tour-closing show in Detroit. From early in the first set we have the combination of Sugaree-Minglewood Blues and from later in the first set we have one of the best Scarlet Begonias in a year in which they played plenty of great renditions, and the set-closing The Music Never Stopped, with a gorgeous outro jam.

Be sure to check in next week when we’ll have some great music from 1984, 1989, plus some other excellent material. As always, we encourage you to email with questions or comments. It’s always great to hear from you.

    Shit flinging
Couldn't there just be a "Shit Flinging" section, then those who want to do just that can have their own little den. Just an idea...

Nice selection this week David - Thanks. BTW, if you could find some time to either fix the stream from early September for "Greatest>Sugaree" - it only streams "Greatest", or just add "Sugaree" to another week, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - keep up the great vibes!

Let it Grow has always been a fav of mine....great selection! There is some great stuff in the '76 four night run at the Boston Music Hall, including another amazing Let it Grow. The Worcester '88 Let it Grow rips as well.

i've pointed out that 'music stopped/sugaree' a billion times. (it's from the aug 27 week.) marye and izzie both know, and i sent an e-mail to lemieux, too. i don't think it's gonna get fixed. pleasant that there haven't been any complainers (yet.) are we turning a positive corner?

as they say, a pleasing miracle. There's a Grow from, i believe, 84 in Las Vegas that i had an aud of that I've lost track of time, date and tape. Driving subtleties from Brent, and Jerry just would not let go, and kept climbing. Man, if i could track that down again... this be one nice too!

We THINK the tech folks have fixed this and the Sugaree link should actually play Sugaree now. If, however, this is not happening for you, please speak up. Thanks!

The Let it Grow you are talking about is the Grow from 8/31/81 in Vegas. I have had that show for years and it is great. Let it Grow was a rare occurence in Vegas...possibly a nod to the barren desert surroundings?????

The Music Never Stopped. Damn! I'll check back tomorrow to see if it's fixed. BTW: I love the Dancin's, though having them in one listening period is a bit much to take. I'm sure there were alternate selections available without duplicating tunes in the list. Although, the Dead didn't really start mixing it up a whole lot until after Brent came on. Thanks, Dave.

I might be wrong about this, but I think that the 8/31/81 Grow was the only one ever played in Vegas. I think I remember someone telling me that a while back. I have a friend who is a stats freak who used to help out with the Dead Base books each year and I think he told me that.

Is that a hint of Mind Left Body in the outro? You don't hear that too much after 1974 and prior to 1990. Sweet stuff!!

Listened to most of this week's music. The Truckin >Jam>Dew is very nice. Dew is more laid back than usual, with Jerry really taking it easy on the vocals, but hey, you gotta mix it up. I listened to the first Dancin' sequence and enjoyed it, but like most '76 sequences, the transitions are bumpy and imo a bit forced. The tunes are still played well though. Love the Grow >Might as Well. The Scarlet is also very nice but I found that I don't enjoy the Before Fire Scarlets as much. All in all though, good stuff. BTW, if you want the real goods, go to last week's taper's section and listen to the Dark Star sequence.

With Lemeiux still not commenting on the whole situation on here, screw him. We can at least be civil with each other on here and try to help each other out, regardless of the powers that be. There are several people on here with a ton of knowledge and vast collections of great music. That is really why I still come on here. I have traded some great stuff with people on here and only furthered my large collection. We know Rhino sucks, but it is still possible to find true tapers still out there. What they have going on here has little to do with "tapers" and the true sharing of music. The free tunes are great each week and some of the new connections I have made have been super. I will try to help out anyone I can and let's keep trading!

Screw Lemieux? Please forgive me, Marye and Izzie, but screw you, EP. Perhaps you should check out "Forums>Dead Heads>Tapers." Seems to me that that would be a more appropriate place for you. These posting are supposed to be about weekly stuff. Leave all negativity behind. I have (I hope.) btw, 'Dancing ... Saturday Night' is awesome!

"Perhaps you should check out "Forums>Dead Heads>Tapers." Seems to me that that would be a more appropriate place for you."-written by enjoyingtheride So you are in agreement that the so-called "taper's section" isn't the true place for tapers....thanks for making my point that much more clearer. You may have found a purpose on here.

with all due respect to everyone's strong feelings on the subject, and I mean that sincerely, I can't change it, Iz can't change it, and the various folks participating here can't change it, for good or ill. Which being so, please weigh the benefits of venting further against the benefit of hanging out with good folks and seeing what else there is. It is not for me to say what the right choice for you may be. But historically I've found that Deadheads are pretty good at making a pretty good scene of the most deeply flawed situation, which historically has been just as well, as most situations turn out to be deeply flawed at one level or another. So if we could be spared another round of people hurling invective at each other, that would be sweet. But it's up to you guys.

When was self-censorship promised....???? Your another part of the overall problem...why would you want to try and stir the pot more? We can go that route though.... Marye, it should be known that many of us have a lot more respect for you. What you write makes good sense. Peace is better than nonsense. Izzie's attempts at drive-by sarcasm are less than sad, especially in her role of moderator on here.....it explains a lot about this site in general.

i always thought this was called the 'taper's section' not because we should be able to tape this stuff (which we should, imho), but because the material was culled from various soundboard tapes. doesn't matter to me, in the end. i still get to enjoy the music, and i still 'record' the music. the sound quality has taken a nosedive, but it ain't bad for the most part. i'm wary of ruining a good thing by admitting this, but i do have the entire taper's section available for trade. send a private message if you want. and i'm right behind you on the above post, csmiller. but hurling invective at anyone, be it each other, lemieux, or even rhino, has proven useless. and, by the way, i like izzie's sarcasm. it's the yang to marye's yin. anyone have 9/6/91?

It comes from a concept foreign to Rhino, Inc.....it is called communicating with others on here, AKA Rhino's customers and consumers. Try it, you might like it.
