When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.
ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.
With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.
These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.
It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.
Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.
Shakedown Street 1982
May the 4 winds blow everyone's pre~orders safely home, and I hope it's soon.
When you do get it I must say, the 1982 Landover, MD bonus filler is awesome and the Shakedown is one of my favorites now. Killer extra jam at the end after the end of that song, they almost go PitB!
There's a riot goin on
Sly was so far ahead of his time. Those first five albums are stone classics, and the singles he released during that period as good as anything anyone ever did ever. Everyday People. Stand. Hot Fun in the Summertime. Family Affair. Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf. If You Want Me to Stay. Oh, and he was pretty good live, too. He stole the show at Woodstock.
So sad the way all that talent went down the drain. So sad that nobody could help him. But at least we have that music. His best stuff sounds exactly as great and as fresh as it did back then.
So long, Sly,
It’s arrived in the U.K.
Came yesterday. My next door neighbour saw it and brought it in from the doorstep. No customs! Sorry to hear you’ve been clobbered for duties Colin. Maybe my customs bill is coming in the post?
Now to unwrap.

Whirring At How Many Cycles?
(Just going for the spirit here) -
MOTM: I'm guessing the hummingbird's wing speed perfectly matched the vibrato on TC's organ, or clavichord, or whatever it was ... Cool.
Happy Heavenly Birthday to Howling Wolf. 6/10/1910
What a great musician, one of my favorites. The Dead did a great cover of Wolf's Smokestack Lightening.
new live Jerry coming soon
Read all about at Garcia Family Provisions: 6 CD set of 2/28, 3/1, 3/1/91 at the Warfield. Comes out 7/25, but you can pre-order now.
Back to your regularly scheduled box set chat.
Little known fact
Muddy Waters recorded " Smokestack Lightning" in 1954, two years before Howlin' Wolf. Although Wolf recorded a song called "Crying At Daybreak" in 1951, which is basically the same song.
Re: Dam... Brian Wilson RIP
Wrote this on the DaP54 page, sorry to repeat.
Not a huge Beach Boys fan, but I love Pet Sounds and have complete respect for Wilson's song writing and impact. The man was a gifted artist who helped change music for the better. Plus they played with the Dead.
I think he was born about the same time as Garcia. Can you imagine how different things would be if Garcia was still alive and still contributing? Two great artists, I guess it's a little unfair to compare but.. well.. I guess I just did.
Be well all, flying my freak flag at half-mast and will play Pet Sounds at some point today.
Speaking of music, "God only knows what I'd be without you..."
Quotes....
... I must've heard it in that movie about Brian Wilson's life that came out in I think 2015 or so. It went something like this; The character playing Wilson is in a pool chatting with some one else not in the water and says "Don't be too shallow for the deep end!" Or something to the effect of. Now I don't know if those words were actually spoken in real life way back then, but it sure sounded too cool! I've used it in conversation a few times myself for added allure. Anyways,...
... Rest In Peace Brian Wilson, thanks for the "Good Vibrations" as one would say.
Working my way through the Box
69-72 CD’s all played without error and sounded grate.
2-24-71 was awesome, as was the filler. At some point I will need to do the Port Chester run in order.
7-15-89 spinning now.
Box
Nice work Conekid.
Listened to Red Rocks 79 and Alpine 80 so far. 84 Greek ripped and ready to go for tomorrow.
Took a peak at the 89 Deer Creek and as someone has mentioned they used Healy's recording instead of Cutler's multi-track recording. Can't explain it. I will withhold judgement until I listen to it which will be a while. Having 20 new shows at my figure tips is fun and I am taking my time.
Love the posts.
Will they give us a MUATM this year? Man, I hope so.
UK - getting closer everyday
I’ve just paid £110.67 in VAT, so with any luck the box should land tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
As for the Beach Boys, I loved the surfing tunes and Pet Sounds and Holland are great albums. I think God Only Knows is probably the best single I have ever heard. It’s interesting how different people have different tastes. Of supposedly classic albums I think Velvet Underground with Nico is fantastic. I prefer Revolver and Rubber Soul to Sergeant Pepper, I have never heard Dark Side of the Moon and hearing Exile on Main Street for the first time recently didn’t impress me much. Just as well we all have different opinions.
Arrived Yesterday
My box arrived yesterday. I'm about halfway through ripping the CDs. Started listening with the 69 stuff... sound is incredible.
I'm a little disappointed however as mine has some minor damage (like a previous poster). One side of the CD case is banged up. CDs on that side were all out of their slots and there are tears in the holder and divider. So far all CDs seem ok, but it would be nice to have a pristine box for $600.
Also listening to 81 Hartford currently. Nice show.
Hope everyone's arrives in fine shape and you all get to enjoy the ride.
gratefulfreak
Sorry to hear your box has some damage issues.
Yes. for 600$ these should be shipped in such a way that damage is not possible aside from something catastrophic happenig in transit.
I've said it once, I'll say again...
UPS IS KING OF FREIGHT
Use them Dead.net!!!
Brian (Brain) and Sly
Sad indeed. Watched the 1985 Beach Boys movie a couple of week back. It is good but you can tell they never reality paid enough attention to documenting the ride like we know who.
Both will be missed. Saw a headline about Sly which stated he left the music scene for a crack pipe.
How many are grabbing artwork? Do they produce after sale's window closes or was a run number given? My favorite is the one on 6/16.
Drama starts where logic ends.......
FLAGGDRAMA..................
If you're out there, check you pm's. Just sayin'........

What is drama but life with the dull bits cut out...........
Box set CD back spines printed upside down!!!
The new box set is nice and great and well done and all...BUT THE PRINTING ALONG THE CD SPINES IS BACKWARDS...so now I must keep the 20 CDs on my shelf UPSIDE DOWN...$600 and we get treated to a 4th grade mistake! I wonder if we all complain we will get shipped replacements. I also wonder if this means no grammy this time for the otherwise lovely packaging and swag.
CD spine print
I was thinking the same thing, but, after putting disc back in box after ripping, the thought occurred to me that it was done on purpose, so when you open the box and look down you can read the spine print.
hope that made sense....of course i could be wrong
Canadaland
WTF?
I support you to no end and this is what you give me.
Shameful.
By the way toronto. You are equally to blame. Letting that scumbag score the overtime winning goal in game three, being up 2-0.
Going to spin 71 now to de-stress.
Thanks for listening.
Edit:
I stand by my comments. But that comeback was balls.
Upside Down?
Guess I'll just leave them in the box where they belong. Was noticing last weekend how much the display looks like a theatre, with that red velvet, the rows, the artwork (I'd add a photo if I could).
I rarely if ever touch the levels since Dave and Norman started cranking them out, but with these '91 and '93 shows, I'm needing bluetooth and bring out the equalizer- lower the mid range and bump up the lower and upper frequencies. Ahh.... much better......
Box set arrived....
....in digital format. Thanks to friends in high places.
You know who you are. Much love.
Second Set Boston Garden '94
Top shelf GD.
What a way to close it out.
Cap Centre 1982..
What is the story with this show ? Is the 1 set in the Vault.. ? The second is great.. BW from sunny Copenhagen
Any day that a new King Gizzard record drops....
....is an awesome day. Check it out when you have the time!
Upside Down? Five Branch
I keep my old trusty Yamaha EQ at the ready, but rarely use it. I used it last on Dave's first show. Can't remember number, but 4h show of spring 1987 tour.? I had to do the same thing there . Lower the mid's and boost high and low frequencies to smooth it out for my stereo. This is the same pattern I used to use on audience tapes way back when. Most mics I noticed had a tendency to boost mids and roll off highs and lows. In an interview with Dan Healy in 1991, when asked about where more work needs to be done with the sound system; he replied "with microphones." 1991, and still needed better mics (phones) not the other. I am sure that research still goes on all the time as P.A. systems continually push forward from Bear, Healy, Meyer, and Featherstone's hard work.
It does make a nice smile on the EQ.
speaking of KG&TLW
out of nowhere I got the urge earlier this week to listen to their "metal" album on that toob

Just wanted to publicly thank Dennis for supplying me the files on the cassette.
All hail our brother Dennis!!!!!!!!!!!!
Upside down ?
Think something may be upside down, but not really sure ? A good starting point may be checking to see if you're the right way up yourself.
Box Set- I should be so lucky
It is now nearly 7pm local time on the day Parcelforce promised delivery. They haven’t been. Their tracker still shows customs charges need to be paid. However, the part of their website that can take payments tells me the charges have been paid. I used their contact form querying this and will get a response in two working days (Perhaps Tuesday as they don’t work weekends). Let’s hope I see it sometime next week.
With Proudfoot banging the Motorhead drum....
....I figured you'd enjoy Rats Nest.
Thanks Dave and Friends
Amazing 60th Celebration! - truly grateful for all of the work involved in putting this together. I wasn't sure where to start listening, but I'll go with inspiration over time, which is the usual path. I'm remembering before Dick's Picks all the stops and starts of releasing such high quality shows, and here we are with more than I can even imagine. Glad to still be on the Golden Road with you all.
While Waiting
for the Big Box.
Just finished listening to two wonderful albums on our back porch on a warm Friday night:
One - 1972-12-05 NRPS, Boston Music Hall
Two - No Other Deluxe Edition 2019 by Gene Clark
Beautiful!!!
Now back to waiting mode.
Cheers
G.
Parcelforce
Colin, I find myself in exactly the same situation.
I do recall collecting one box set, maybe Pacific North West, from the local Parcelforce depot, which wasn't actually that local, but was no more than an hour away. It might be worth trying to call your local depot tomorrow morning and see if you can collect it directly from them tomorrow, if you want to get it sooner.
