When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

I was on the job at an all day presentation that I was video taping, running the camera and recording. I learned about it during a break at 11 am. It was hard for me to concentrate the rest of the day. I felt a big hole in my life. Later friends gathered at our house and we all went over to GG park to join the heads gathering together in grief. There was a large circle of heads on the grass, with lots of candles and pictures of Jerry, and people singing along to guys with guitars and drums.

The day the news of Jerry's death broke, I was starting a new job in a new city and pretty overwhelmed by everything that entailed. I was unpacking boxes, meeting new people, shaking lots of hands and nodding vigorously as my new bosses explained my new duties, and I didn't have much time to think about it.

Until later. That evening there was a gathering of people in the park near my new apartment, so I went down there to listen to the songs and read the signs and try to process the whole thing.

    I'm still processing.

I, too, was surprised by huge public outpouring of grief. My primary show-going years were the late '70s and early '80s, a time when the Dead was widely considered a cult band that was barely relevant to the music biz or mainstream culture. By 1995, I had not been to a show in years, and I didn't realize how big the "cult" had become. But the public reaction to Jerry's death--the front page stories, the mass gatherings, the musical tributes--was a lot like when John Lennon was killed. And that was when it first hit me that the Dead's audience was damn near as big as the Beatles.

And I think it's bigger now than it was then.

TTB was great at Red Rocks, btw. I also traveled up to Bend to visit a friend and caught a show (just one of the two) there. It was super cool to see some of the same folks I had met at RR, some of whom were following TTB through several cities on the current tour. Strangers stopping strangers. High fives, hugs, and other things were exchanged. Reminded me of the olden days, it did.

Well, yesterday actually. I can remember that Jerry's death was reported on the national news and was front page news the following day. Apart from my one Deadhead friend, this surprised everyone else I knew. The Dead obviously were nowhere near as well known in the U.K. as The States, and most of my friends assumed they were just a strange acquired taste of mine. An obscure cult band from the 60's with a very limited following. They didn't know anything about you lot.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they gunned you down"

From the corner of my eye I saw the sun explode
I didn't look directly 'cause it would have burned my soul
When the smoke and thunder cleared enough to look around
I heard a sweet guitar lick, an old familiar sound

I heard a laugh I recognised come rolling from the earth
Saw it rise into the skies like lightning giving birth
It sounded like Garcia but I couldn't see the face
Just the beard and the glasses and a smile on empty space

May the 4 winds blow everyone's pre~orders safely home, and I hope it's soon.
When you do get it I must say, the 1982 Landover, MD bonus filler is awesome and the Shakedown is one of my favorites now. Killer extra jam at the end after the end of that song, they almost go PitB!

Mine is now about 20 miles away in Liverpool. Unfortunately, it won’t get delivered until I pay the customs fees. The request for payment will arrive by post and it hasn’t got here yet. Perhaps, another 2 to 3 days.

Sly was so far ahead of his time. Those first five albums are stone classics, and the singles he released during that period as good as anything anyone ever did ever. Everyday People. Stand. Hot Fun in the Summertime. Family Affair. Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf. If You Want Me to Stay. Oh, and he was pretty good live, too. He stole the show at Woodstock.

So sad the way all that talent went down the drain. So sad that nobody could help him. But at least we have that music. His best stuff sounds exactly as great and as fresh as it did back then.

So long, Sly,

Wrote this on the DaP54 page, sorry to repeat.

Not a huge Beach Boys fan, but I love Pet Sounds and have complete respect for Wilson's song writing and impact. The man was a gifted artist who helped change music for the better. Plus they played with the Dead.

I think he was born about the same time as Garcia. Can you imagine how different things would be if Garcia was still alive and still contributing? Two great artists, I guess it's a little unfair to compare but.. well.. I guess I just did.

Be well all, flying my freak flag at half-mast and will play Pet Sounds at some point today.

... I must've heard it in that movie about Brian Wilson's life that came out in I think 2015 or so. It went something like this; The character playing Wilson is in a pool chatting with some one else not in the water and says "Don't be too shallow for the deep end!" Or something to the effect of. Now I don't know if those words were actually spoken in real life way back then, but it sure sounded too cool! I've used it in conversation a few times myself for added allure. Anyways,...

... Rest In Peace Brian Wilson, thanks for the "Good Vibrations" as one would say.

69-72 CD’s all played without error and sounded grate.
2-24-71 was awesome, as was the filler. At some point I will need to do the Port Chester run in order.

7-15-89 spinning now.

Nice work Conekid.

Listened to Red Rocks 79 and Alpine 80 so far. 84 Greek ripped and ready to go for tomorrow.
Took a peak at the 89 Deer Creek and as someone has mentioned they used Healy's recording instead of Cutler's multi-track recording. Can't explain it. I will withhold judgement until I listen to it which will be a while. Having 20 new shows at my figure tips is fun and I am taking my time.

Love the posts.

Will they give us a MUATM this year? Man, I hope so.

I’ve just paid £110.67 in VAT, so with any luck the box should land tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
As for the Beach Boys, I loved the surfing tunes and Pet Sounds and Holland are great albums. I think God Only Knows is probably the best single I have ever heard. It’s interesting how different people have different tastes. Of supposedly classic albums I think Velvet Underground with Nico is fantastic. I prefer Revolver and Rubber Soul to Sergeant Pepper, I have never heard Dark Side of the Moon and hearing Exile on Main Street for the first time recently didn’t impress me much. Just as well we all have different opinions.

My box arrived yesterday. I'm about halfway through ripping the CDs. Started listening with the 69 stuff... sound is incredible.

I'm a little disappointed however as mine has some minor damage (like a previous poster). One side of the CD case is banged up. CDs on that side were all out of their slots and there are tears in the holder and divider. So far all CDs seem ok, but it would be nice to have a pristine box for $600.

Also listening to 81 Hartford currently. Nice show.

Hope everyone's arrives in fine shape and you all get to enjoy the ride.

Yes. for 600$ these should be shipped in such a way that damage is not possible aside from something catastrophic happenig in transit.

Really high energy first set (all i've heard so far)

Bird Song>Promised Land first set closer is a perfect example of why the GD are in a class of their own. Absolute powerhouse versions of both songs!!!

Wow

Sad indeed. Watched the 1985 Beach Boys movie a couple of week back. It is good but you can tell they never reality paid enough attention to documenting the ride like we know who.

Both will be missed. Saw a headline about Sly which stated he left the music scene for a crack pipe.

How many are grabbing artwork? Do they produce after sale's window closes or was a run number given? My favorite is the one on 6/16.

The new box set is nice and great and well done and all...BUT THE PRINTING ALONG THE CD SPINES IS BACKWARDS...so now I must keep the 20 CDs on my shelf UPSIDE DOWN...$600 and we get treated to a 4th grade mistake! I wonder if we all complain we will get shipped replacements. I also wonder if this means no grammy this time for the otherwise lovely packaging and swag.

I was thinking the same thing, but, after putting disc back in box after ripping, the thought occurred to me that it was done on purpose, so when you open the box and look down you can read the spine print.

Guess I'll just leave them in the box where they belong. Was noticing last weekend how much the display looks like a theatre, with that red velvet, the rows, the artwork (I'd add a photo if I could).

I rarely if ever touch the levels since Dave and Norman started cranking them out, but with these '91 and '93 shows, I'm needing bluetooth and bring out the equalizer- lower the mid range and bump up the lower and upper frequencies. Ahh.... much better......

I keep my old trusty Yamaha EQ at the ready, but rarely use it. I used it last on Dave's first show. Can't remember number, but 4h show of spring 1987 tour.? I had to do the same thing there . Lower the mid's and boost high and low frequencies to smooth it out for my stereo. This is the same pattern I used to use on audience tapes way back when. Most mics I noticed had a tendency to boost mids and roll off highs and lows. In an interview with Dan Healy in 1991, when asked about where more work needs to be done with the sound system; he replied "with microphones." 1991, and still needed better mics (phones) not the other. I am sure that research still goes on all the time as P.A. systems continually push forward from Bear, Healy, Meyer, and Featherstone's hard work.

It does make a nice smile on the EQ.

out of nowhere I got the urge earlier this week to listen to their "metal" album on that toob

It is now nearly 7pm local time on the day Parcelforce promised delivery. They haven’t been. Their tracker still shows customs charges need to be paid. However, the part of their website that can take payments tells me the charges have been paid. I used their contact form querying this and will get a response in two working days (Perhaps Tuesday as they don’t work weekends). Let’s hope I see it sometime next week.

One - 1972-12-05 NRPS, Boston Music Hall
Two - No Other Deluxe Edition 2019 by Gene Clark
Beautiful!!!
Now back to waiting mode.
Cheers
G.

Colin, I find myself in exactly the same situation.

I do recall collecting one box set, maybe Pacific North West, from the local Parcelforce depot, which wasn't actually that local, but was no more than an hour away. It might be worth trying to call your local depot tomorrow morning and see if you can collect it directly from them tomorrow, if you want to get it sooner.
