When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

I was on the job at an all day presentation that I was video taping, running the camera and recording. I learned about it during a break at 11 am. It was hard for me to concentrate the rest of the day. I felt a big hole in my life. Later friends gathered at our house and we all went over to GG park to join the heads gathering together in grief. There was a large circle of heads on the grass, with lots of candles and pictures of Jerry, and people singing along to guys with guitars and drums.

The day the news of Jerry's death broke, I was starting a new job in a new city and pretty overwhelmed by everything that entailed. I was unpacking boxes, meeting new people, shaking lots of hands and nodding vigorously as my new bosses explained my new duties, and I didn't have much time to think about it.

Until later. That evening there was a gathering of people in the park near my new apartment, so I went down there to listen to the songs and read the signs and try to process the whole thing.

    I'm still processing.

I, too, was surprised by huge public outpouring of grief. My primary show-going years were the late '70s and early '80s, a time when the Dead was widely considered a cult band that was barely relevant to the music biz or mainstream culture. By 1995, I had not been to a show in years, and I didn't realize how big the "cult" had become. But the public reaction to Jerry's death--the front page stories, the mass gatherings, the musical tributes--was a lot like when John Lennon was killed. And that was when it first hit me that the Dead's audience was damn near as big as the Beatles.

And I think it's bigger now than it was then.

TTB was great at Red Rocks, btw. I also traveled up to Bend to visit a friend and caught a show (just one of the two) there. It was super cool to see some of the same folks I had met at RR, some of whom were following TTB through several cities on the current tour. Strangers stopping strangers. High fives, hugs, and other things were exchanged. Reminded me of the olden days, it did.

Well, yesterday actually. I can remember that Jerry's death was reported on the national news and was front page news the following day. Apart from my one Deadhead friend, this surprised everyone else I knew. The Dead obviously were nowhere near as well known in the U.K. as The States, and most of my friends assumed they were just a strange acquired taste of mine. An obscure cult band from the 60's with a very limited following. They didn't know anything about you lot.

I heard a laugh I recognised come rolling from the earth

...With no "Help on the Way" nor to "Franklin's Tower" it would seem? Since I had to type in more than or about 75% of the titles, I've given certain 'Jams' (with a capital) that had names their proper due. Especially in light of such odd appearances!
Yeah on the 1982 bonus filler I labeled the track after "Drums" ... "Space >> Slipknot" because it definitely gave that impression towards the end of the track. Also it seemed to segue into "Not Fade Away" almost as good as I ever heard a 'jam' do. Strangely like it belonged there, and quite naturally too. I wonder now have The Dead ever did a "Help>Slip> NFA >Frank?

Still! .... Enjoying the Ride. Also I truly wish all the well to everyone still awaiting their Big Box.

for me has been the 3.17.83 show from the Capital Centre. Great audio, interesting set list, inspired performances all around.

I knew I would like the '69 stuff, and the '72, and '73. I expected a show from Winterland in '77 to be grate and it was/is. And I knew the Berkeley show was super kool. But I was genuinely surprised to have my mind blown by a spring '83 show. In great sound. With a PITB>Dark Star? Are you fucking kidding me? And then a really good Space. What is that melody Garcia keeps playing? Sounds like some ancient Appalachian folk song, but I can't place it. (Can you?) and then TOO>Days Between? And a damn good Good Loving, encore Lucy in the Sky with Acid? This is my face when it's been melted off.

Second best surprise has been the audio quality on the Red Rocks show from '78, which I'm told is one of the last Betty boards. Might be my favorite of the Red Rocks shows. So much good stuff in this box.

Upside out, inside down? I had that problem with the Europe '72 cover too. We will survive.

SMYLER,
Thanks for the suggestion. Searching online doesn’t produce a local number. So I called the only quoted number. This was an automated service, it took several minutes to get through to a point where they’d connect me to a human being. Then followed a 20 minute hold until I got to the head of the queue. The call handler was very pleasant and helpful but couldn’t give me a number for the local depot. She could see the glitch where their info showed that I both owed payment, hence the delay, and also that I had paid already. She couldn’t arrange delivery today, but I should get it on Monday. Time will tell. The tracking info does now show it can be delivered, so that’s an improvement.
I did try the old faithful trick of not pressing any keys in response to the automatic system so that they’d connect me to a human but their system was too clever and simply kept asking the same questions over and over. I guess I just wasn’t made for these times.
Now it’s back to trying to catch up with the backlog of music I’ve bought but haven’t played yet, only a 100 or so albums to go.

Garcia is playing The Handsome Cabin Boy during Space. Absolutely gorgeous, haunting, passage (a personal favorite.) I wasn't there but found out a little bit later that my youngest brother was. Remember him saying that the wave of energy that shot through the crowd with the opening notes of the Lucy in the Sky encore was off the charts insane. The inclusion of the show in the box was one of the many reasons I had to get the box. I caught much of this show on the GD Hour later that spring I think. My first exposure to The Days Between and mind blown.

I had answered that for Fivebranch June 7th (97 posts ago), lol! But not having the box I went to the archive and enjoyed a great show. What a surprise! Great setlist. And like Bluecrow I had some of that show on a tape from BITD on the Grateful Dead Hour. Also my 1st connection to Days Between and I still think this may be the best one.
My previous post said just look to what Garcia was recording on his days off to figure out what he is noodling in the Space. Back then it was with David Grisman where they were doing Handsome Cabin Boy.
Cheers
Edit: I can remember BITD being so impressed by that new song Days Between that I kept playing it, and rewinding it, until I got all the lyrics written down. (no internet then kids) The wife said did you write this? Um, no hon. That would be Robert Hunter.

I looked, I am not seeing any shows where they played "Help>Slip> NFA >Franklins. Nice thought though.. opportunity = missed.

Edit: Yes, I typo way to often. Corrected and apologies.

Edit2: What's with all this unnecessary violence? Cheese and rice. For what it's worth, I said the same thing during the attempted assassinations a while back. Violence = megabad. I love the lyric Strangers Stopping Strangers Just to Shake Their Hand. I don't like the lyric One Way or Another this Darkness Got To Give. But here we are.

Still making my way thru the box in order. Enjoyed the really early stuff, but most looking forward to the late 80's and 90's, which isn't normally my era but those are peak shows for those years, and I was at LSD @ Crap Centre. A show I've frequented over these many years. I remember specifically lighting up a cigarette before LSD during the break and wondering if I should because the girl next to me had a baby! Oh brother, it was so bad by 95 there were like little day care centers, leave the babies at home people

Anyone have trouble with any discs so far? The first 2 Hampton 81 discs I get "Cannot read disc" Gonna see if I can extract, might have to ask for a replacement (God help me)

For JiminMD, thank you for the research on that song combo I was mussing about.

I know there had been a few instances where the band did a "Help>Slip>Frank" & added another song to it, along with maybe an official "Drums" or segue jam. Probably somewhere after "Help on the Way" and before "Franklin's Tower" like they did 10/9~1976 in Oakland. Where they slipped in a "Samson & Delilah" with "Drums" around the "Slipknot" section of the song. Actually they list it as between TWO "Slipknots" and it's the first show of Dick's Picks #33. Yeah, too bad they never did that song combo with "NFA" it would've sounded awesome. I figured the best odds( if it had been done) were in the Vince era maybe? Guess not!

Great stuff! Jerry seems happy. A little low in the bass. Strong finish out of space.

I have the whole show in stock, was just surprised when I got to the end and they weren't there.

I thought that would be the case, just getting 2nd opinion :-)

update - just checked my "stock" copy,,,, very shitty recording compared to "official". When I downloaded the archive I sorted thru every show to get the "best" sounding one. So this crummy recording must have been the best out there!

I like the Greek run, but I would prefer the Box to contain SPAC, Merriweather, Pittsburgh, etc.

Or combine those with the Greek for an even bigger Box.

Imagine how those shows could sound all cleaned up……

Each person's interests will vary, of course ... We already have the 2 from Frost, but between there and Ventura there are lots of great shows to choose from:

I would most want SPAC, Merriweathers (both, as they're pretty epic and I was there) and the first Ventura show w/Sat Night > Fire. But something from the Greek run, or Blossom, and/or Hershey would all fit the bill also.

I was completely unaware that this ever happened. There's a grainy clip of the good parts on Jambase, one can google it. Pretty awesome, but I as an unabashed Phil fan, I am clearly biased.

Thanks so much for posting this my old friend from around the corner and down the road.

And Strat/Wolf/ConeKid... I'm right there with you. 85' is sprinkled with magic pixie dust, sure there are vocal anomalies and the recordings are not pristine, but there is a raw energy in some of those shows that runs through my veins when the moon is full and the planets are aligned.

Denver's famous jazz musician, Charlie is known as the Jackie Robinson of classical music being the first man of color to play in a major symphony orchestra (upright bass in the Denver Symphony Orchestra and later with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra). Later changing to jazz and was a standout in Denver's jazz culture in the Five Points area jazz scene and especially at its center, the Rossonian Hotel. Five Points (see PBS documentary) was the Harlem of the west as it was the biggest jazz center between STL and the west coast. Charlie played with all the greats including Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Errol Garner, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, and Lionel Hampton. He helped convince his cousin George Duke to switch to jazz when George told him that he "wanted to be free".

Also listening to disc 3. Actually like 93 disc two it would not play. Someone on here had a similar problem and found that wiping the disc with a cloth fixed it. In both cases it worked. So this was my first California show and magic it was. Shooting star and all...... Hit the Triple Rock brewery for a pint or two and then off to the Greek. This is best sound I have heard for this show too.

Oddly enough and based on the posts here I think I was amongst the first to get the Box and thats in Vancouver! I too got no notice of shipping and was just about to inquire when there was a knock on the door.

50 years ago tonight I was up at Winter land for a knockout of a show with the Good old Grateful Dead. Keith & Donna Band & King fish were also on the bill. Kingfish really tore it up. Hopefully this show will be released with the Blues for Allah 50th anniversary release.

Just listened to Hartford 81 first set yesterday. Holy crap!! I hate to say it but it's been awhile since I've been blown away by a release but this blew my doors off. The energy level is through the roof and Jerry is super hot. I was waxing my car and listening and had to stop and just listen. I couldn't concentrate on the waxing at all !

#5415 has finally arrived in Scotland. I had identical problem as Colin Gould with Parcelforce. Paid £110.67 last Friday. Box is huge but a lot of wasted space in it. Love the book and ephemera. Going in reverse order so Boston 94 playing now which I've never listened to before. Happy Daze. 🌹😎❤️

This morning I received a request from Dutch customs to pay €111 VAT and €16 administration costs, something I find excessive. Together, those costs are equivalent to $146. With $98 shipping, I have now paid in total $844 for the box. Hopefully I will have it in house early next week.

My sympathies on having to pay so much

They just make up fees and taxes

Mine is not moving.
Last shipping update was arrival Frankfurt Airport, June 3rd.
I guess taxes and fees will be similar here (if I ever get it).
Cheers,
G.

Just announced, The Grateful Dead Movie on August 14, in theaters in 4k and IMAX.

Should be cool. Watched this and the bonus footage 100s of times, but always enjoy the big screen.
