When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

I was on the job at an all day presentation that I was video taping, running the camera and recording. I learned about it during a break at 11 am. It was hard for me to concentrate the rest of the day. I felt a big hole in my life. Later friends gathered at our house and we all went over to GG park to join the heads gathering together in grief. There was a large circle of heads on the grass, with lots of candles and pictures of Jerry, and people singing along to guys with guitars and drums.

I read the news that day, oh boy

The day the news of Jerry's death broke, I was starting a new job in a new city and pretty overwhelmed by everything that entailed. I was unpacking boxes, meeting new people, shaking lots of hands and nodding vigorously as my new bosses explained my new duties, and I didn't have much time to think about it.

Until later. That evening there was a gathering of people in the park near my new apartment, so I went down there to listen to the songs and read the signs and try to process the whole thing.

    I'm still processing.

I, too, was surprised by huge public outpouring of grief. My primary show-going years were the late '70s and early '80s, a time when the Dead was widely considered a cult band that was barely relevant to the music biz or mainstream culture. By 1995, I had not been to a show in years, and I didn't realize how big the "cult" had become. But the public reaction to Jerry's death--the front page stories, the mass gatherings, the musical tributes--was a lot like when John Lennon was killed. And that was when it first hit me that the Dead's audience was damn near as big as the Beatles.

And I think it's bigger now than it was then.

TTB was great at Red Rocks, btw. I also traveled up to Bend to visit a friend and caught a show (just one of the two) there. It was super cool to see some of the same folks I had met at RR, some of whom were following TTB through several cities on the current tour. Strangers stopping strangers. High fives, hugs, and other things were exchanged. Reminded me of the olden days, it did.

Well, yesterday actually. I can remember that Jerry's death was reported on the national news and was front page news the following day. Apart from my one Deadhead friend, this surprised everyone else I knew. The Dead obviously were nowhere near as well known in the U.K. as The States, and most of my friends assumed they were just a strange acquired taste of mine. An obscure cult band from the 60's with a very limited following. They didn't know anything about you lot.

I heard a sweet guitar lick, an old familiar sound

I heard a laugh I recognised come rolling from the earth
Saw it rise into the skies like lightning giving birth
It sounded like Garcia but I couldn't see the face
Just the beard and the glasses and a smile on empty space

Box 4297 arrived 5/30. I just got home from a trip three weeks later this Monday and finally opened it up. Wow, its big! Not quite so overwhelming as Boxilla. First thing, I dove into Red Rocks 79, a show I was at...incredible recording, incredible show. I'm a happy deadhead.

I remember that show, too. The benefit for Bob Fried, it listed Kieth and Donna, Kingfish, and Jerry Garcia and Friends. The anticipation was running high when the band came on stage, I think Bill Graham introduced each member at a time, not sure my memory is fuzzy. But when we knew it was the whole band, the crowd went crazy! I think that was the last performance of Blues for Allah.

VGUY elfa shelving is good you can choose between wire shelving or their decor shelving which is wood. Let’s you design exactly how you want the shelves to lay out. Solid stuff. Enjoy.

I agree with JJC, I have elfa shelving that's 25 years old in "office" loaded with books,,, not a bit of warp.

Last year did all my cd's and lps in Elfa.

For LP's I'd get 16" wide shelfs, I did the 3 foot width and had to go back and add extra support rods.

The stuff is real easy to install, uses a top rail (J shaped) and the down rods just hang off it.

Stuff is not the cheapest, I lucked out and the annual sale was going on, got a third off. So 3K worth of shelf, for 2 K.

Looks like maybe a 50% off sale going on now.

Added - oh,, you'll find at The Container Store

First, it was only 2K :-)

But really I don't know how else to store your collection. I have over 5500 cd's and 24 feet of lp's.

Stack them on the floor?

They were in boxes for years in the closet, now I can see them.

When you consider the cost of the collection, 2K for shelves is nothing!

If we didn't have the money to piss away, they still be in boxes! I'm almost 70, if I don't spend it now my son will spend the bulk of it on drugs and women. The rest he'll waste on something stupid!

Surprised nobody has mentioned Kallax shelves. Or maybe somebody did and I missed it? Anyway, they're relatively cheap, easily available if you have access to an Ikea, they look OK and they' re a lot better for storing records than those milk crates I used to use. And you can put you GD box sets on top.

Glad that *almost* everyone seems to have gotten their boxes, even if some had to pay exorbitant fees and endure surprisingly long waits. Glad, too, that wiping down the discs seems to eliminate most problems.

Got to listen to the Nassau show start to finish on a long drive across CA 128 (Mendocino coast through the Napa wine country, with a stop at Anderson Valley Brewing in Boonville) yesterday and it was fine fine fine. I think next up for me will be the '85 show so many have raved about. So much to explore in this box!

Just ordered brand new book: Loud and Clear: The Grateful Dead’s Wall of Sound and the Quest for Audio Perfection. there's a Billboard interview with the author.

Only 2 shows remaining to listen to, 3-16-73 (just started spinning, sound is grate) and 5-13-78.
Saved those until the end because DaP54 + bonus, and the ‘78 Box are newish and I’ve been listening to those in the car while I worked my way through the BBBS in my living room.

All CD’s so far played without error.
I gently blow each CD with a compressed gas duster after removing from the holder. Most CD’s had small specks of paper fiber, a couple CD’s had something stuck that had to be removed by a cloth. The worst was 3-20-77 where all 3 CD’s had a lot more debris than the others in the BBBS.

Overall very pleased with this offering from Dave/Rhino and Norman/Glasser.
I listen to all eras and this BBBS really helps fill in gaps in the overall collection. Goes to show, there are at least a few good sounding early 80’s recordings in the Vault.

This BBBS is set up like a tape case in the car. A mix of years, and filler with some shows.

So now that we know that 80’s shows can be cleaned up, bring on the Summer ‘85 Box.

....................and at the moment listening to the He's Gone jam from the '80 Alpine show with all the windows in the house open and hearing a whole lot of backyard fireworks shooting off.....

Sort of feels like the 4th. I'll be joining in next year!

Ah yes it's either an example of Catch 22 or I'm stuck in a hysteresis loop!
I've sent photos of the packaging, my DHL tracking and description and a wav of China/Rider from Veneta in '72 just to show how important this is!
I was going to shelve this for a while as I am currently listening to all of Dave's in reverse order so I'll just have to hope
I wonder how long it would have taken them to realise that there was an undelivered box collecting dust sitting in the corner?
Plus I've sent them a link to one on ebay just in case they need to replace it - may make them look harder!

...buying this box if you don't live in the States. The extra money in postage etc, the patience and effort required to make sure you actually get it, and a belief , not founded on seeing them on a regular basis, that the 80's weren't actually that bad.

The belief?

It is reality.

There are definitely some rough spots with Jerry's well documented issues.

I would not trade those times for anything. The whole time period shaped a lot in my life and so did their music. Enjoy it if you can.

Playing the Frost 83 set right now and it is stunning. Jerry’s guitar has the that clipped wah-funk tone that is propulsive and spacey at the same time. A little over halfway through the box and every show holds its own.

I feel for all of you across the pond and around the globe. Tariffs/import duties/whatever you want to call them are a tax and these taxes are currently excessive in many places. It hurts the overseas consumer, it hurts the manufacturer, it hurts both sides equally leaving us all poorer and the countries that impose these taxes less competitive and more susceptible to corruption.

It's 1897 economics, it's stupid.

Damn! They are so magnificent just as the other 1989 versions I know well, and some from 1990 too.
I just got three more shows ripped on my computer, both 1989s and the 1985 plus bonus disc. They are all sounding real good right now as the last show I downloaded and dove into before this trio was the 1987 MsG. All really good stuff indeed!

Probably I will save the last 4 shows in the Box for a little bit later. The Fillmore's both East & West, as a nice bit of primal Dead to finish up the 'Ride' along with the 1994 Boston show and finally the Shoreline 1991 to close it all out with a rollickin' Vince Era show.

Hoping all you Heads still waiting out there to get your Box see it soon!
Wishing everyone out there a Super Solstice! Daylight is all downhill from here.

My box arrived a couple of hours ago. Unfortunately I've been busy so unpacking will have to wait until this evening. It's baking hot here in the Nether-regions but it'll be cooler in the evening.

I started the box with Boston 1994, and ive made it to 1985 so far. Each show has something to offer with the 12/27/89 show really standing out. Bird song>Promised Land to close the first set of this fine show is pure magic!

Rock on, gang!!

Yes he played, there is a clip of him talking to audience before the gig explaining what happened and asking the audience to cheer for his mom, it is strong medicine, I saw the clip on the website savingcountrymusic.com,

Yes, he announced it at the beginning of the show. Very sad, but he held it together. He asked for a moment of noise, as opposed to a moment of silence. The crowd responded accordingly. Very nice tribute!

I madeit to1984 from the box last night. I've heard plenty about this show through the years but last night was my first focused listen, and I really enjoyed the show!

Excellent sound quality!!

I just saw a pick of what looks just under 1500 PCM Tapes !

It was in the comments of a post by Mickey on facebook from October 27, 2017 anniversary of the first taper section. " A look inside the vault"

edit; could be videos too, but there is a ton.

Does anyone know if PCM's were taped first set on one tape , second set on another? That would be over 700 shows .

For IanGillespie, I had a similar problem after paying customs and my tracking on Parcel force showed ready for delivery followed by custom charge created. I tried to contact parcelforce, without success and went to the depot and picked up my parcel and was told there is a problem with customs overriding deliver. This may be what's happened!
