When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

Deadvikes, yes, the drought of 88 was the real deal. It was dry and hot at Alpine Valley on 6/19/88. And crowded.

Was texting with a friend last night about our last show 30 years ago, 7/8/95. Like many, we walked out of Soldier Field not feeling good about Mr. Garcia's future. We got a good Saint of Circumstance and the Visions of Johanna was really good. How he got all the lyrics to Visions and missed pretty much every lyric in US Blues and others is a mystery.

Alas, thanks for the many good times and glad the rest of the band and the Deadheads have been able to keep the music and vibe alive for 30 years.

Any problems Texas has, Texas has asked for. 25 BILLION dollar rainy day fund! Early warning system, too expensive! Sad, sad story of course.
Republican rule since 92, almost the lowest ranking in the country for education, health care, pay. But they keep electing repub's. Big story in future will be water! We have ONE real lake, the rest are man made. We keep building houses like crazy, in dense packed neighborhoods, where everyone has a lawn and we haven't built any new reservoirs. This is almost desert country when left to it's own.

Sorry, enough of this talk on this page.

as always, excellent choices.

When is the third Dave's of the year usually announced?

I should have tracked that pattern over time, but I haven't.

And don't forget the BFA 50th!!!

I woke up this morning, and the first video on YouTube was for the Dave's Picks vol 55 announcement. I was a little confused as Dave was speaking in French, which although not surprising as he is Canadian, I thought I was either still dreaming or that I was watching a video intended for a different audience.

Dave was just being a prankster as Vol. 55 is from 10/28/90 in Paris, France. Dave goes on to explain that there are also filler tracks from the next night in England. So we are getting our first Bruce/Vince release in the series. Pretty cool.

It's mentioned below a "thank you" for the Healy Mix on 7/15/89 from ETR BOX SET. Funny thing is they clearly have this show in multi-track recording, in fact a better version of Truckin' from the 7/15/89 show that is clearly in multi-track recording format can be purchased on TMNS Soundtrack(2011). Not sure why they would put out a cleaned up soundboard for the box set version of 7/15/89 vs. multi-track recording??? Even in the 30 Trips box set there was a multi-track recording of 10/26/89.
The other '89 show(12/27/89) from the ETR Box is not a multi-track recording either, you can tell with the mix & lower volume when played....again this is odd that they wouldn't put out a multi-track version of this show either, they probably have it in multi-track recording, as the Bird Song from WIthout a Net was taken from 12/9/89 just a few weeks before, it is clearly a multi-track recorded version.
My guess is with the cost of producing multi-track recording releases, TPTB didn't find these two shows "multi-track" worthy. The 7/15/89 show has lots of cringe moments in it, both Jer lyric flubs, and miscuses....
I see #55 is now out, looks good...but I guess will have to wait for #56 to get that early Brent rockin' show!

This is great!

Thank you, Dave and pals! Merci beaucoup!

Please forgive any spelling errors on that.

Interesting that this comes on the heels of me reading both A Tale of Two Cities and The Hunchback of Notre Dame over the past month.

I sure didn't see that one coming.

Sure looks like an interesting show. And the French jokes should keep us going for months.

PS: In case you missed it (I almost did), you can get a vinyl version of Denver '73 and Austin '71 Road Trips "exclusively" from the Bezos River. It's mentioned at the way bottom on the monthly bulletin thingy. It pains me to say I will probably have to pass on these, given that I just shelled out for the DiP 4 vinyl, not to mention the big box. Unless, you know, there's a significantly improved remastered audio or something.

Has anybody else heard an audible glitch at exactly 2min 7sec into track one disc 7 trucking
This sound is not on any previously unreleased soundboard of same show
I requested a new disc 7 which might have the same sound
I’m wondering if it’s a manufacturing defect or not.

I hope that subject line means what I want it to mean. I know almost ZERO French and what I do know is half cribbed from Hercule Poirot stories.

But yeah! I'm glad to see this release. I don't really listen to this tour - when I'm in the mood for early Vince-era stuff, my go-tos are a couple of shows from September '90 along with the Feb '91 Oakland shows and Vegas 4/27-28/91. After that we're into the glory of Summer '91, some of the last real glory, and it is a bit of a different beast. So this will help expand my horizons.

I have the 30 Trips 10/27/90 show in my collection but I know I've played it exactly once. There's just such a surfeit of riches to choose from, and I just never seem to find myself saying, "you know what would scratch that itch perfectly right now is the Europe '90 tour"

Yes, I was indeed at all three Wembley shows. Well, two and a half of them. My girlfriend flipped half way through the 31st, so I decided to leave before the second set. Three nights of The Dead, a beautiful woman and a bag full of mushrooms - anything could have happened. And it did. If I had the chance to do it again, I would do it exactly the same way. Life was what it was.
My favourite of the three shows was the first, 10/30, but they were all memorable and full of incident.

But I'd like to pass the ball on to Frank Parry, who I believe was at the Paris shows. I haven't heard this particular show, but the previous night is great - musically better than the three I saw.

$99.98 for Vol. 3 #2
$174.98 for Vol. 4 #3
Didn't get to the checkout screen, as I was afraid I might do something rash, but there was a purchase button.
Didn't catch if this is a limited edition.

Edit - Why the CD version is also listed at $125 is a mystery as it can be had from RGM for less.

Great to see Dave jump into this era for a pick in this series. Caught them a couple of months later at Compton Yerrace where they played Valley Road. Really looking forward to this one.

In regards to the Oakland 12/27/89 source, in comparison to Deer Creeks Healy mix which is dry but good, I'm guessing the other is a 2 track Cutler discreet mix like Spring 90 the first box.

As far as the box set, I've listened chronologically and am up to the 93 Cap Center show. Too many highlights to mention all, but that Greek show is a fun listen. Worn out copies of tapes of this and will continue to get a lot of play for me.

Don't see a comment section for the new Dave's Pick. Hmmm

Iron Maiden...first saw them July 1981 at the Fox in Atlanta. Had original group. Was on the Killers tour; it was killer.

It was:

Whitesnake (the old bluesy version with Lord and S-Paice-(y.))
Maiden
Priest.

Sidn't sell out til day of show. Fox holds 4,600. Was a night of blues, then raw Metal.

G

nbd but yeah that 2-07 glitch is there. sounds like a tape artifact? maybe these Betty Reels weren't the circulating source? Sound is fantastic on this listen to Disc 1 of Fillmore East 1971 mash up.

edit - when I wrote "fantastic" I meant to write "freaking fantastic". OMFG

No dude, I wouldn't say that's a defective disc, sounds more to me like a defective audio source. Like the original reel tape got wrinkled or something. To me upon first glance (listen) it sounds like static from the show mics, but upon further audio analyzing (in my brain) it seems clearly something baked in to the recording somehow and is unrepairable, nor patchable.

Consider it an unknown 'fart' from some one at the show close to a mic!

Yes, I was at the Paris shows. I was on the bus hired by members of the Spiral Light fanzine. I was working at Loughborough University at the time and I had a job getting away at not long after the start of term and later driving down to London each night for the Wembley shows.
Both shows were great and I’m glad they are both released. I preferred the first as 9 years of waiting to see the Dead again meant I was jumping for joy and very excited. It’ll be good to hear the second night again and see if on reflection it was good as the first.
There were loads of Americans there and I’m not sure that the French knew what hit them! Great atmosphere. It was a small venue and the sightlines and sound were both superb - way better than Wembley.
There was a little puzzlement when Hornsby started Stander on the Mountain as many wouldn’t have known the track. Same for Valley Road at Wembley. It’s nice to hear Hornsby again. I was glad to hear the jazzy piano prominently played in the Dead sets again.
The standout moments were the Box of Rain which got a huge cheer and then the whole seemless sequence of the second set through a pretty wild drums and space.
Pity you missed the Werewolves encore at Wembley Daverock. Jerry gave it his all, though he had a bad cold. At the end of the last Wembley concert I was knackered and eager to get home. My friend urged me to hang around a bit saying that we were unlikely to see them again. Sadly he was right.

Indeed there is a glitch at about 2 min 7 seconds in Truckin'. I bought the download version of Enjoying the Ride and I can confirm that the glitch is present in the digital file that I purchased. So, asking for a replacement disc will probably not get anyone anywhere. If this glitch isn't present on other soundboard copies from this show, then it's endemic to the files used to create the digital files and CDs for the box set. You can draw your own conclusions.

These are 2-track Betty Boards in ETR per DL on GOGD East Coast Pt 1. Recorded for the band to listen to for selecting songs for Skull and Roses.. Can't really explain the glitch not being present on earlier circulating versions, but leading theory, for me at least, simply being that it was another 2 track source circulating and not Betty's. I got to thinking if any of Betty's tapes ever circulated in the "old days" prior to the unfortunate storage unit event. Can't think of any, but its not like I was plugged into the high level trading networks. Anybody have any insight into whether any of Betty's work circulated way way back in the day?

The Philly Electric Factory 2/69? Bring it!!

....prime example of why I really love going to shows solo nowadays. Who am I gonna complain to? Myself? Trick question.
Early Sly Stone vinyl shipping notification today. "Dammit Vince. You ordered this?"
"I'm solo"
"Oh yeah?!"
"Yeah!"
"Move along. Move along."

There is no 'glitch' but Jerry's guitar has some strange timing (sounds like an edit but isn't) and there is a sound like someone kicking an amplifier on stage!
No error in manufacturing though

I had never heard Valley Road before they played it. It seemed inexplicable at the time - I wasn't sure what to expect at these Dead shows - but it wasn't this ! Truth be told, I hadn't actually heard of Bruce Hornsby before he started playing with The Dead.
I went on my own on 30th, and as I said, that was the show I enjoyed most. Sitting right up at the front, and the sheer buzz of actually seeing them in the flesh. The only other time was in 1981 at the Rainbow. But the energy level seemed much higher on my ill fated second night. Straight away with Help-Slipknot- Franklins they were right on the button and it seemed destined to be a great night. Being Halloween a lot of people had dressed up, which added to the party atmosphere.
On the plus side, when we left after the first set I gave our tickets to a couple of blokes standing outside - who looked as though they couldn't believe what had just happened. I couldn't myself...

Hey.. to all those Europeans out there chiming in on these shows. First, glad to see them released. You guys get to hear us comment if we were there and I am really enjoying hearing your tales. Second.. I have always been curious, were they psychedelic moments, i.e. was it readily available at the time at the shows? Here, you might have to poke around but something was shakin' on shakedown street. Right up until the end, those were the days.

Did 1990 (and 74 and 72 I guess) achieve liftoff?

Any comments?

I think I achieved liftoff before that. I’d known the Dead long before but missed 72 and 74 for one reason or another. I saw them many times in ‘81 and loved it but somehow lost track for a while. But back in ‘85, however, I had a bad accident (broke my leg in several places after a fall) and was in hospital for several months. A good friend from work brought me loads of tapes and for a while people would wonder why a man in traction had such a beatific smile on his face!

    Still haven't heard the cassette

But other than, I think I've listened to the whole thing. Except for the Stanford show, which was in such poor audio I decided to skip, at least for the time being. And the '94 show, come to think of it. All good things in all good time.
