When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

Vguy - Saw an interview with one of the Wizards, or maybe it was the King, on the Indie 102.3 site through Colo. Public Radio News today. Covered some about them and the recent Field Of Vision festival in Buena Vista, CO. Didn't know they were Aussies. Covered a tiny bit of the Spotify thing too. Buena Vista sits at almost 8000 ft. altitude and I'll bet it was a gorgeous setting with the Collegiate Peaks as a backdrop. Finally going looking for them on the tube today.

I got the 50th Anniversary of Made in Japan last week. It's includes all three shows which they recorded for the album. Apparently they have been out before, but this is the first time I have heard them. Same set list every night - but they improvised and each show has it's own unique feel.
Having said that, put Highway Star on from any of the three nights and the effect is the same - feels like your house has been hit by a thunderbolt.

I saw Deep Purple in the fall of 1972 while they were touring the Machine Head album. Elf and Buddy Miles were the warm up bands. My recollection is that they were unbelievably loud. Although occasionally hearing Smoke on the Water on the radio, I don't think I've actually listened to Deep Purple for more than 50 years.

I didn't see Deep Purple until 1974, when the classic line up had dissolved and David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes had joined. I also remember them as being unbelievably loud -it took me a few minutes into each track to distinguish what they were actually playing.
The next time I saw them was in 2018. Sound systems had improved exponentially by then. Although loud I could still hear when I left the show.

The JGB Warfield box has arrived this afternoon. Ripping right now.
I saw Deep Purple first time in Jan. 20, 1973 (Frankfurt Festhalle). Yes, it was loud.

I saw Deep Purple in August 1970 at a festival held at Plumpton Racecourse in Sussex, England. It was 2 months after "Deep Purple in Rock" was released. They were very loud compared to most of the other bands, with the obvious exception of Black Sabbath. Being outdoors meant that one could adjust the volume by moving further away from the stage. Deep Purple were very good and finished up setting fire to a (fake?) Marshall stack which was impressive as it was dark by then.

Like Gerd, my JGB Warfield set arrived this afternoon. I'll crank up the hi-fi tomorrow.

....I am looking forward to your opinion of KGLW. I will say this. Impossible to pigeon-hole them into any musical category.
Look up the videos of them in Europe this summer.
Edit. Not sure if I believe it, but reports coming out that there were zero arrests at their festival. No incidents other than an unfortunate death the first night due to a medical issue. Estimated at 10k attendees from 45 different countries.

Purposely did studio non-video stuff to get a feel for it.
Onward to the live. There's already Field Of Vision stuff up.
Will reconnoiter and report.

I've gotten a bunch of shirts over the years, and most seem to shrink after one trip thru the dryer, but are still wearable. I got the Cow Palace shirt (2003?) man that was one hell of an ugly shirt, but it was quality and lasted for years. Although, not as hideous as the WA states of Dead shirt, I mean, I put that thing on I'm taking a serious mocking from my wife, it is horrendous. The Fillmore West was/is a quality shirt, still wear that one. And also, I got the 60th shirt, and that's a very quality shirt, but now sold out. I've had the best luck with Jerry shirts though. Bought 3 in like the last 18 months, all quality, all still in the regular rotation. If a shirt shrinks or becomes unwearable, I save it for my quilt lady, who makes me a t-shirt quilt every 3 years or so, reduce, reuse, recycle....

Yes it’s thin, but it isn’t 100% cotton and is cooler in hot weather.
I don’t dry it complete in the dryer, pull it out while still damp and let it air dry. So it’s still in pretty good shape.

PF found Rats Nest. Patragonic should be next. Lemmy would approve.
Im not an expert. But I'm whole hog into them currently, and I dont see this trend faltering anytime soon.
If you wanna just relax, hit a few tokes and watch their early videos. That's what I do!
Sleep? Checking them out now Stolz. I hear Sabbath / Trouble / Cirith Ungol right out the gate. Touch of Gizz.

Vguy72, Sleep is amazing, I would check out Dopesmoker, but The Sciences is the crown jewel of their discography, also the offshoot band Om is really good. Another great band in that vein is Green Lung, which is like Leafhound doing the WickerMan soundtrack

Post hiatus was excellent already

1972...yummy.

Ripping the 3/16/73 show today and in the liner notes Dave mentions the great performance on 1/10/79 at Nassau. I know this has been called for release for years. And it is 79 so yes, if they have it in the vault let's get it out......

My Dave's #56 prediction is a show from April 82. What are you all thinking?

You know the rest….

Pulled the trigger on the ALAC digital files. No post-card, no cassette, no bells and whistles, no ripping. Just the music. Best option for me… a few shows I really wanted are here and this beats buying overpriced shows piecemeal from that place.

Instant and hassle-free download. No tax, no shipping and even a discount promo code that worked which put me at just under $6 per disc out the door. Works for me.

Started with 10/3/94 at Boston Garden which complements 10/1/94 from TTATS quite nicely. Fare thee well indeed from the Brokedown Palace that was the Garden. Think it became the Fleet Center in 95 and Jerry never came back of course. Nice song to go out on. Peace all.

Dennis,

Looking at Google Om Trio are described as a jazz/rock band. Om do have three members (only 2 on the albums I mentioned) and definitely don’t sound like jazz/rock. The only instruments on the first two albums (from memory) are drums and bass guitar with some mumbled vocals. Well worth tracking down.

The old Boston Garden was replaced by the Fleet Center at North Station. The Grateful Dead would've been the first band to play at the Fleet Center in the Fall of 1995. We got our mailorder tix for the Boston run the day before Jerry died.

Fun fact: Construction on the Fleet Center began on April 29, 1993. Although the new arena was intended to be situated slightly north of the old facility, there were only nine inches (23 cm) of space between the two buildings when construction was completed.

I went on a tour of the new facility on one of the dates the Dead was supposed to play there in 1995.

Love those 94 Boston Garden shows and Jerry was clearly giving it his all. Great shows that I enjoy a lot.

Heartbreaking to hear you had those 95 Fleet Center Dead tickets for concerts not to be.

Was bummed when all the arenas went with those corporate names around the time. Loved those Celtics-Lakers games in the 80’s as well. Lot of history in the Garden. Of course Lakers now play in the Crypto.com Arena. Ouch.

Loving the Box shows so far. Frost is a little rough but I grew up in Boston so likely don’t appreciate the mystique and history there. Gimme a good Worcester show and I’m happy! But the Garden of course is sacred ground for me.

The Frost show from the Dead 60th box is a Quantum Leap back to 1983 Palo Alto, crowd noise and all. Since you are there trippen' & tapin' with the rest of the Heads as one would imagine!
Your purpose seems to be to figure out what all that odd stage banter after the first set from either a roadie or promoter is supposed to mean.

Still,... Enjoying The Ride!

You are correct sir about the 83 Frost Show.
Fine for the old maxell cassettes in the eighties, not great for a professional produced box set in 2025 which cost over $600.

In fairness, I’m not a huge fan of these matrix sourced shows. I remember this issue came up for me with DaP 36 (Hartford 3/26& 3/27/87) as well which I didn’t love. Many did. All good. Apologies to our beloved curator who did love that one as I recall.

Still digging in but ETR is an overall, appreciated box. Still lots to listen to.

I'm with Flag on the Ultra Mixes. I did listen to the 83 Frost, it didn't sound that bad to me after I adjusted to the sound. Still the shows both before and after did sound better. For whatever reason(s) 83 and 87 seem to be more uneven than the surrounding years.

I agree with WaveThatFlag on the overall impact of the box. To me, it exceeded expectations and there was more to really like than I expected.

In fact, I am still enjoying it.

So Dave just announced in his Seaside Chat that 2/1/78 is going to be the show for Vol 57. I think that is cool as we already have 2/3 and 2/5 from the old Dick's Picks release (I can't recall which number it is). I do like getting the "adjacent" shows to older releases. If we are not getting a box set with successive shows in it, it is nice that the Dave's Picks series can add these shows in. I have no familiarity with this show, but it should be fun to listen to for sure.

Dave also comments that he and the crew are committed to having the variety of shows from different eras/years in the series. I also like that provided that the 2026 subscription gives us something 1970 or before. I think we are due for that. I also think it is about time that 2/15/73 gets the nod. I see someone has mentioned 2/9/73 as well. Maybe both can be Vol 58 with the bonus disc and all, although there might not be room to fit both shows in their entirety even with the bonus disc. I had both shows on tape and very early in my tape trading days. So there is sentimental value to me for those shows.
