30 Days...
Not to be that guy, but how are winners being chosen? I've submitted correct answers several times within very few minutes to no avail. Is this an 'insider's' game?
rabbit from a hat
pretty sure a name is picked at random from all the perhaps thousands? hundreds of correct answers and that when you entered has no bearing at all. as others have mentioned i too have also wondered and wished they'd post how many people entered and how many were correct. not interested in the odds or winning, just would be interesting. i've been playing since the penultimate year and have won 3- 4 times, mostly in the first four years. i haven't won in the last 6 years, maybe longer, despite a 99% correctness rate. but like i said i'm just here for the food.
diggin this tasty choice for today. sure hope i win
Penultimate
Means next to last
Antepenultimate=3rd to last
Preantepenultimate=4th to last
Propreantepenultimate=5th to last (don't tell Dave)
Draw
I have to believe its a random draw of whoever sent in the right date and venue. Some days are far easier than others. Try to be write on the day when they give you a 30 second snippet of drums from some random show between 1979 and 1995 ... Ha!
Winners to my understanding
Chosen randomly. You don't have to be first anymore like in the olden days. I don't even think you have to have the exact venue anymore. I forget the exact rules but take your time and just get the right answer in before midnight. I think a fine prize is all this free music anyway. 🎶
Loser
Found the 2 possible shows yesterday. Found the right one. Somehow wrote down the other one. F***** SPAC! What a loser. Today i feel good lets call it 14 of 15.
SPAC
1. Not in Western New York
2. Deal not played there in penultimate SPAC appearance either, which would have been 6-27-85. (Final SPAC show was 6-28-88)
Winners & Winners
To be honest I think we are all winners. We get the opportunity to play, engage and receive some wonderful music. For me, I do my best to enter but without any expetcation of being selected (on the rare occasion I submit the right answer) given I am in UK which makes p&p super costly and tedious for all concerned.
International rules
I think you have to be in the United States to win maybe even in the lower 48, not sure. But I agree, we are all winners for playing.
summer leaves are blown away
Beautiful rendition here, as they all are. Jerry plays his final notes of Let It Grow in a higher register than usual, which was my big clue today.
Thanks Dave & Co. :)
Right on, Smallz
One of my to-dos is to finish blowing the leaves today.
The podcast episode for WRS is really good. Posted two years ago tomorrow, actually.
The answer came
Morning comes, we follow the clues to the proper show.
Will try to avoid the wind and rain these next few days. Summers definitely gone.
What shall we say, other than WRS is an incredibly beautiful piece of music.
Certainly one of my all time favorite eras of the band.
Thanks David!
Early 1973, For Sure
The last third of this song is redundant, otherwise great Bobby.
STILL NO PIGPEN
STILL NO PIGPEN. 4+ years, and counting.
Jon Mitchell doesn’t listen well, eh?
They had pigpen on day 7.
redundant?
Evidently Jerry jamming is redundant????But not Bob's singing!!!
What A Great Tune
The other day I suggested that Jack Straw was my favorite Dead tune. I lied. I think WRS is my favorite Dead tune. A thing of absolute beauty and one of those Dead songs which is arguably better in the studio than live (except for Let It Grow which is awesome live). Looking forward to hearing this one.
Careful
be careful with ultimatums when you’re wrong on both!
Long Time Listener….
…First time WINNER!!! I’m ecstatic!!!
Prankster!
Congrats! Seeing your name in the today’s winner slot is so fun, added bonus to the incredible gift we all share in the 30DOD. Yes the real prize is the adventure, the discoveries, and each other. Maybe Dave & Co. can join Good Ol Deadcast one of these days to talk about the dynamics of selections, processes, goals, participation, and so much more re: 30DOD and more importantly all the endless nuggets to share about a day(or lifetime) in the life in the vault. So grateful!
Commercial break
Do you wake up in the morning longing for a rabbit hole to go down?
Do your ears have an incessant desire to sync music from two locations until it is "just exactly right"?
If so, ask your friends if "30 Days of Dead" is right for you.
30 Days of Dead has shown to be helpful to feed these desires.
CAUTION: Participants may experience a sense of community, enhance their technical listening skills, and generally be filled with excessive glee.
BWAHAHAAAHAA!
Sign me up! What's that 1-800 number again?
This is my first year doing…
This is my first year doing this and I LOVE IT!!! I am having so much fun!!!
So much fun.
Somehow I've been doing this from the beginning.... 2010 ... yes I'm old .... Every year is more fun than the last... missed one this year cuz Dave beat me.... much as I hate to admit it...lol ...I can't even express in words how cool this all is. Jerry would be proud I think! Rock on and ALWAYS be cool to each other
The alpha and the omega
First listen clues me in to the fact that this version is coming out of something rather than a cold start. The ending is a full stop, so it eliminates any long jam into another song. Found a Jerry riff that synced up just right.
back on track after missing 3-in-a-row
found that Deal from yesterday with help from Bobby's set break announcement. pretty sure I found the match for today. glad to be back in the groove after missing 3 days in a row this week for either running out of time or not listening and just looking at setlists.
Some of my favorite musical moments so far from this month: Feel Like A Stranger the bass is delicious and there's a moment where it sounds like they're about to go into an Eleanor Rigby jam. The little tuning "jam" before Victim after the preceding Sugaree from that show sounds like it could be from a Genesis song. Plus that Victim freak out jam and when they come back in for the ending expertly. Love the sound of Pigpen's voice and the loudness of the bass in Alligator. And the Terrapin>Sailor>Saint is chef's kiss to me. I love the sound of Brent at that time and everything sounds so smooth and I want it constantly pumped into my veins. The Black-Throated Wind guitars are great. And that Deal!
Thank you for the musical goodies! Excited for the second half of the month.
Larger sums
Yeah, I kinda wish Dave had given us the previous song too for todays gem but the full "Weather Report Suite" is a nice touch. I prefer my abridged "Let it Grows" preceding a "Deal" and if it's a Brent show more than likely it's a BIG Deal too!
Weather Report
Thank you, Dave, for introducing me to this show! That’s as psychedelic as I’ve ever heard. The x-factor in full effect for this Weather Report Suite, and my ears were fortunately open to perceive the mind meld at work.
Congrats Prankster!
I finally got today's but I had to pretty much brute force it. Fortunately there was a good clue early on so I could listen to 30 or 40 versions relatively quickly. Took some time, but it was another civilized puzzle.
What Are People Sayin'?
Based on headyversion data, this version of WRS is the 40th best alltime. And based on my own proprietary algorithm, based on herbibot data, the show it came from was the 60th best show of that year.
Jerry's unique guitar tones…
Jerry's unique guitar tones at the end were key for me locating the correct version as has been mentioned. Speaking of keys, I really appreciated them being so prominent in the mix, which is not always the case. Man did the Dead ever play some long sets back then. True road warriors.
I can't find this one
I listened to 51 versions, and I must have missed something.
I would like to know how many people enter daily/monthly, and I agree that a Good Old Grateful Dead podcast episode should be devoted to the 30 days process.
Weather Report suite
Today was pretty difficult, but it helps that there were so many good shows during this era officially released.
52
I found a setlist for a 52nd show, but no audio for it. SO I picked that one.
So good
Amazing how many shows were officially released. guess this one snuck through lol
As well to count the angels dancing on a pin
WOW hate to admin I have not spent a lot of time with Weather Report but have always loved Let It Grow. So freaking beautiful, Phil was absolutely perfect this night! The Most Beautiful Live version up to this point in time in my opinion.
I AM... I AM..... I AM.........I AM!
Bingo!
Thought I'd try here then there then... 3rd try! The outro of the song before it and those piano notes right at the beginning of the suite here give it exactly. Almost thought it got too late and I would miss trying a guess today. Finish the suite and then read a bit before bed. 15/15 woo hoo! Enjoy!
Heh.... the Pigpen poster still does not realize that Alligator was offered up this year... C'mon man, read a little. Poke a round a bit as they say ya just gotta...
Cues .... clues
Those are the same places I've been looking but still no match and I've exhausted my resources. Now skimming for what I might have missed.
Re: Clues
Well…if you consider it’s the full suite and not a set closer *and* you can eliminate the previously released stuff, it’s not an impossible task. Consider the timings too.
Stuck it out
I caught it maybe on my third listen ,,, thought it would be quick and easy but not today. I'll enjoy it now.
