    Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

    This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

    Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

    Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

    So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Defective Discs
    The discs "skip" as if they were dirty, but they're not. I have 9 skips over 7 discs. Played them on different machines with the same results. Spoken to someone else who had the same problems with 3 of the same discs as me. Waiting for replacements...

    I've held off posting about this for some time, but after reading various comments of frustration, I can no longer resist. I was one of the "few" (rhino's words, not mine) who received defective discs in their Europe box. I've waited patiently (more or less) for 4 months, calling every other week and emailing every other week. Yesterday I received my replacement discs from Dr. Rhino. Well, the discs they sent had the same exact flaws as my original ones. Talk about being bummed! I own a high end HDCD player and an equally high end stereo and speaker set up. I painstakingly played the discs on my home set up as well as the car and computer. The discs are defective-it's that simple. I know a defective disc when i hear one. These are not limitations on the source tape, I've found a few of those and am perfectly willing to accept those. However, I parted with $450 hard-earned dollars and I expect to get what I payed for. The fact that GDM, or whomever, refunded part of my purchase price is nice, but given the option, I would prefer to pay the entire amount and have a flawless product, not a discounted price with a flawed product. GDM had the golden opportunity to do this Europe '72 up right, and instead, in conjunction with Rhino, decided to offer up a cheaper, inferior product, hoping us deadheads would just lap anything up that was fed to us. I have been a mail-order customer for 25 years. Never have I been so disappointed with customer service of any organization, not to mention the shoddy attention to quality and detail. You people in charge ought to be ashamed of yourselves. You can make all the excuses you want, but the bottom line is that you screwed your loyal customers in order to increase your profit margin. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME on you!

Actually (in the e-mail announcement) it states in the last line, of what I guess you would refer to as the header, "As a special bonus, the first 3000 boxed sets issued will be personalized editions." In the body of the letter, the second paragraph ends with the same statement. And no, I dinna' get your pm. Last time I know (think) that worked for me was Oct 12.

Thought to mention again the soundcheck from Luxembourg, which contains the only performance (that I know of) where Jerry takes the lead vocals on Big River. A perfect example of one of the hundreds of smaller moments...

I could be and probably am wrong but I do believe the basic math on E72 works out to less than $6.20 a disc or $20.55 a show not counting shipping and taxes. I have had hours of listening pleasure and probably listened seriously to only 4 or 5 shows so far. I for one don't feel screwed. My credit card feels a little tattered and torn......

stepineden72, I don't think most people feel screwed by the great music released in the box set. I think the people, like myself, who are pretty unhappy are generally feeling that in their case, customer service at Rhino dropped the ball in every conceivable way (and a few ways that I couldn't even conceive of). I think the music is outstanding. But the customer service/purchase experience was probably the worst I have experienced in 52 years of living.

Without disparaging the negative experiences of some posting here, I have to wonder how many people ordered their box, and received it with no problem? That was my experience -- I used a credit card that I knew wouldn't expire before 9/2011, sent it to my home, and I got pretty much what I expected in the way of swag. And, I never thought that anything but the box was the limited release, so it didn't bother me that the individual shows were released. As I said, I understand that others are upset with various aspects of the process, and maybe they are right to be. I do wonder how many folks there are like myself, who have no complaints. And who appreciate that in any human endeavor, there will be screw-ups. My experience with dead.net and rhino leads me to believe that things will end up all right.

Just wondering if any postal or Vat fees for anyone has come through meaning reimbursement thereof with hope? I haven't checked lately but I thought that was gonna come sometime hopefully for us internationals of this galactic planet. dope ~ loving the tunes!

No problems with my box order - went smooth. I've ordered quite a few things lately from the store (DP's mostly before they are gone) and there has been no problems. Big Donnie/Hot Cider Sam or whatever name will be used next is just trying to stir things up. I really don't understand this person's motivation.

No problem here. Received teh box September 5 in the Netherlands, in good shape. The numbered sticker (6600) a few weeks later, totally unexpected, I missed a thread I believe. However, the people that complain aren't lying, they happen to be extremely unlucky to say the least. I just ordered the 2012 Dave's Picks subscription. I had to reregister as a customer, I wonder what more I would have to buy before they recognize me, but hey, who knows what may happen?

Has anyone found this to be true? This is the response I got from "Dr. Rhino" regarding the two personalizations I just (finally) received, one of which was, of course, wrong. The two were numbered in the 7,100s. Regarding the numbering, the first 3000 customers had the option of having a personalized message included on their label. However, the numbers were distributed randomly. Anyone else get a randomly distributed number higher than, say, 3,200?

Customer services did respond to my e mail - 'I am sorry we are unable to assist with your problem, you will need to e mail Dr Rhino'. So I guess they do not actually assist customers??Anyway the doctor appears to be on house calls because my e mail to the address I was given has gone un-answered for over three days now. I cannot understand how any legitimate business would send out goods in this condition & wondered how many more customers have had similar problems. If you have not already done so, I would urge you all to check the condition of your discs. Apologies that this has been another rant. .

gr8ful, I feel your pain, but yours' is way worse than any that I have experienced. I only have 10 defective discs, and several ripped sleeves. Why hasn't this been addressed? replacement discs and sleeves should have all ready been sent out, what are they waiting for? This pretty much makes up my mind for me, I was on the fence about disputing the charge to my credit card, but with this and other posts, pretty much makes it a no brainer. I got a real bad feeling that we will never see replacement discs or sleeves, why hasn't anyone in management addressed these issues? Nothing on the web site or on this thread ie appoligies or instructions, just silence. I just can't help feeling taken advantage of by everyone involved in this process, first, get us to pony up the bucks, then, after huge profits, produce an inferior product, then, do not stand behind said product. And then they have the balls to put up Dave's Pick's and ask the faithful to put up another 100 bucks on a lick and a promise. Man, if it wasn't so painful, it would almost be funny. Now hear this customer service, do the right thing, answer emails, give us instructions, answer these questions, do something, anything.

I received my replacement disc (in the UK) today. I didn't receive a confirmation email that it had been sent. My original complaint was made on September 14th, so it's taken a while to sort out but hopefully other people's replacement disc's are now in the process of being sent out too... Thanks again to marye, for forwarding my complaint onto Dr Rhino and helping me out...my box set is finally complete!

Frampton- I pre ordered and was never told that a PO Box was not an option and later heard that they delivered other orders to PO Boxes.My order was lost and not shipped unitl I called them to see what was up. I finally received my order without a personalization sticker or numbered box. I am on show 7 and so far no skips, but there are some marks on discs from what looks like cardboard dust. Some ripped sleeves that are not created equal and there was really no chance not ripping them. What really stinks is that I am having a hard time really enjoying some awesome music- 1. because I am paranoid of finding skips and I am listening not just for pleasure but to see if I have one. 2. Still no personalization- some say this is minor, but it means a lot to me. We all put much emotion into these things because the music means so much and of course because they promised it. 3. It was misleading the way they proposed the extras- I had dreams of a t shirt, dvd, or heck pins like the ones in the '73 box, but we received two books that are nice but its nothing unique like this box should have been (c'mon its the '72 Europe Tour!). Anyway, said it before but I'll say it again- not even one official apology from anyone. I will continue to buy the music, but I do not feel grateful and that just plain sucks....

This is a true story which I would like to share about a friend at work that is a casual GD music fan with maybe 9 or 10 GD CD's in his collection of over 1000 CD's.He asked me politely if he can borrow one of the discs to determine if he buy Europe 72 II or some the individual releases. So I let him try out number 22 which had a good selection on it's 4 CD's. As I handed it to him I showed him how one has to be extremely careful like a lab technician with the cover due to it's fragile construction. I proceeded to inform him how I already had ripped 2 of the others by accident. He assured me he would be careful and at the end of the day he came back with his his head hanging low and apologies that he tore one of the corners even after careful handling. But despite this he informed me that besides the covers being the cheapest pieces of garbage he has ever seen, the artwork and liner notes were fantastic and the mix was probably the best quality Dead he has heard. He couldn't believe they would ever put such flimsy covers on such an expensive CD boxset. Enough said.

I have read many stories, both pleasant and grim, about experiences with the handling of this set, and I have finally decided to share mine. I ordered my "All the Music Edition" late this summer and was greatly anticipating its arrival. Around October 3rd, I decided to call customer service and ask why I hadn't received it. I was told by customer service that they "weren't sure when it would be shipped to me, but hopefully it would be within the next week." I asked how I would be compensated for the item not being delivered in September "as advertised." Customer service told me to email DrRhino in order to find out more information. I POLITELY emailed Dr.Rhino to ask when my item would arrive and to ask what was being done for those of us whose item was not shipped as advertised. The next day DrRhino dismissively responded that I would be emailed "when my item was sent out." I again emailed DrRhino explaining that I own a business and understand that sometimes things do not go as planned. When this happens, I always make some gesture to help maintain the satisfaction of my loyal customers. I asked again, "How will WE be compensated for this item not being delivered as advertised?"....... No Answer for two weeks, period. About October 17th, I cancelled my order and grabbed a digital copy from a friend's discs...absolutely free and just as enjoyable to listen to. After years of buying every release I could afford, I SADLY refuse to do ANY business with these people ever again. I tried to support the band, I always have; however, this treatment is so far from what the band would do, or ever has done, to me.

You know it is bad when someone says, "I only have ten defective discs." Unkle Sam just said the same things I've been saying, and it didn't sound like he was some sort of an agitator "stirring things up." He's just yet another guy who got scammed. Yet another guy who realizes that E72 problems should have been resolved before Dave's Faves got started. Ten discs???? 48 discs? Who needs to "stir things up" in this Rhino-created shitstorm? Please. Dr. Rhino should be indicted for grievous malpractice.

The thing that is interesting to me is that in the Real World, there are few people who would plunk down $450 for 73 GD discs of night after night of a tour. The ones responding here are among the very few who would. Happily. And out of those comparatively very few hard core fans with both the interest and the money to buy this set, there are a good number, like myself, who have been so alienated by Rhino and their crappy customer service and laughable number of mistakes that we will likely never give Rhino any more money. If the GD members knew, and really cared about selling these ultra expensive boxes in the future, they would be livid.

If I was Rhino, I would be pressuring vendors involved (sleeve makers, pressing plants) to refund money or replace defective product. I wouldn't waste any time going forward with litigation if they dragged their feet, either. But in the meantime, I would apologize and do what I could to make things right. I wouldn't worry about money lost, I would worry about customers lost. Far more important. Sadly, the shoddy customer disservice at Rhino is, in some ways, worse than the problems involved. They clearly are only about money. When a forum moderator has to intercede so a guy can get one replacement disc, then 'Houston, we have a problem.' She's gonna be running around like a headless chicken for the next ten years if that's how things are gonna work. It's surreal. And then you have Blair Jackson milling around asking people what their favorite Dead cover tunes are. "Hey--did you know it was twenty years ago that Bill Graham died?" Gee, Blair--we were thinking about more important things. We had to pay for our sets. We got scammed--that's why we're banging on Dr. Rhino's door--get lost. "Oh, ok--did I tell you that there's a new 1976 Road Trips?" KOO-KOO! KOO-KOO! KOO-KOO!

i too had the same problem. i was one of the first to jump on board - and because i was one of the first 3K - i was given the option to personalize. i chose "wharf rat" - and what i got was a generic sticker that said "europe 72 box set" - with a box number above 3600 - i contacted dr rhino and was told the same thing. the numbers were issued at random. this is complete BS. if i was given the option to have 1/3000 without the personalization or 1/7200 with a random number and personalization - i would have chosen the 1/3000 - rhino screwed up on this one - i'd be okay with it if they were honest about it. hey, buddy - we overlooked your box number - we're sorry - sometimes these things happen - but to come back and say they never promised the the first 3K folks a number between 1/3000 - but only a personalization is crap. they finally sent me another generic sticker that said "wharf rat" - the entire experience with rhino has me turned off. i won't be ordering daves picks, or any other Dead.Net merchandise. the truth is they don't care about us little folks. hey - remember, we were one of the first 3K to commit to this project. that in itself is worth a box number between 1/3000 - period. this is first grade math.

My wife had ordered me the Egypt set for a Christmas present this past year, it came missing one of the 3 disks. It was such a nightmare process dealing with the Rhino staff and especially Dr. Rhino trying to get the missing disk sent to me that I cancelled my Europe 72 boxed set pre-order that I had placed on the first day it became available and told them I'd not be putting another dime in their pockets. I'd love to have the boxed set but I cannot support Rhino records financially or otherwise after my experiences with them. -Andy

I emailed Mark Pinkus to let him know what his minions were saying. He asked for my set #s, which are very, very close to yours. This was last week. I am waiting to hear back from him. If he doesn't respond, or punts, we can certainly consider our alternatives. It's almost like Rhino set out to inflict as much misery as they could on the Grateful Dead's most loyal supporters. Maybe it was the result of a bet, like in Trading Places: "Mortimer, what if we treated customers who were willing to spend $450 or $900 on CDs as badly as possible? If their address changed, we could force them to spend hours and hours on the phone providing us the new information. And then we still could screw up the order! We could send it to the wrong address, or send it a month late. We could mess up the personalizations, send them out separately, and then give some of the first 3,000 numbers in the 7,000s. Do you think they would stand for this and still buy from us? It's a question of whether their Deadhead loyalties are hereditary or learned. I will bet you one dollar that we can not drive these loyal customers away, even with the worst customer service in the history of mail order businesses." ;-)

Greetings from England, Has anyone seen the All The Music E72 yet? What does it look like/contain etc.? I did order one when I realised I'd missed the original Complete Recordings offer. Then, wow, I got my miracle and got upgraded to the Complete Recordings steamer trunk box-set. This duly arrived and I'm a very happy bunny - (no faulty discs thus far). Check Bickershaw! Rainstorm Daydream! The thing is... I'm an avid GD collector (or, as my wife likes to call it, "a complete lunatic") and I'm tempted, if only for completion's sake, to splash another chunk of my meagre earnings on having the All The Music set too. But, is it worth having? - especially as I will get caned with huge import taxes on top of the $450. Maybe it comes with more robust cardboard sleeves? (now that would be a miracle). So, any comments from anyone who's seen it? Regards Mike

Ha, ha, ha ! I guess you wife must have a few sisters state side. Honestly Mike, I wouldn't be too fast to waste another $600.00 (US) on a "Wing & a Prayer" for maybe better sleeves. But if you do feel the need to part with your hard earned wages there's a $125.00 Bird Feeder, a $60.00 guitar strap and a lot more over priced items in the dead net store.

No. 7034/7200 - even though my order must have been among the first 100 or so (#DNxxxxxx). And just the standard sticker, not the personalization I ordered. I've had absolutely no issues with the covers so far. Given the high number and late arrival, I'm wondering if there was a second printing of the orginal box set with more sturdy covers. Who knows, perhaps Rhino realized their mistake and printed better covers for the AllMusic and single-show editions. I wonder if anybody out there is in a position to compare them? The music is of course magical, with unexpected nuggets of pure bliss popping up everywhere. My fellow commuters will have to get used to my silly grin and non-stop foot-tapping. Thank you, Rhino, DL, JN, Blair and Grateful Dead!

I had one scratched disc and ripped covers but there is a real reverberation of anger over this one. Rhino is going to lose so much money due to non-payment of defective items that they just don't really care about E72. Whoever oversaw and rushed through this project is like the guy who decided it was safe to put the BP well on line that blew up. I don't think this whole thing bodes well for further GD sales from Rhino. They must be as sick of the Deadheads as we are of them.

This is the biggest ripoff I have ever seen. I forked over $450 almost 12 months ago for an advertised personalized and numbered box set. It is November and I still have not received a personalization or a number despite repeated promises that they were on their way. Not acceptable for any retail purchase. I am done with any purchases from Rhino period and am calling my bank to dispute the charge. Complete incompetence!!

Of all the comments I've seen in both big threads on E72, the hardest thing to get out of these people is a personalized sticker. Everybody got a number, most in a special first class mailing. To be fair, some people did report getting their personalization. I just took a good look at the sticker and it's actually made for a name as well as a number.

Hey everyone, If you are one of the original 7200 for the full box set have you received your sets? We had three on order and only received one. Two were for gifts with birthdays that have since passed. I've had about 10 emails to "Dr. Rhino" with only the feedback that they'll monitor shipping. Bla Bla Bla. My credit card was charged for three sets about two months ago, and yet, I still don't have the goods. Just wondering if anyone has an alternative to resolve the mess? Hate to say it, but it kind of feels like a scam when a company takes your money on a pre-order and then doesn't ship... Any contacts in email or phone at dead.net or Rhino would be much appreciated! I am astonished that some have still not received their box sets yet. In your case, where you ordered three and received one, I suspect that something has gone awry with processing your order. I would suggest sending a PM to MaryE with your order number and as much other info as you can muster. She is frequently the angel of last resort in such matters.

With Rhino, we have to stop giving them $$. When they know we'll keep coming back with a handful of cash despite their mistakes, false advertising and atrocious customer service they have no incentive to change. Their business model is downright criminal but hey it works very well for them when you keep showering them with forgiveness and coming back for more..

UPS finally brought me my all music edition box set and I'm stoked!!! I was laid off and just couldn't think about getting this when it first was introduced. But as soon as I got a job I ordered the all music edition. I'm a little jealous of those that were able to get the steamer trunk and books. But the music is the what it's all about and the extras are just icing on the cake. I want to thank Rhino, the band and all involved for bringing this joy into our lives. Don't look for me without head phones for several weeks to come! Peace in the valley

The All Music edition I ordered in June hit the doorstep here in Boston this afternoon--a welcome sight on a Friday. 4/7 is rolling through the headphones now.... For those curious about the All Music materials: you get the discs in the one-pack-per-show cardboard covers everyone seems to have, if the pics I've seen online of that are accurate. Wasn't quite on time, but everything seems in order otherwise.
