Holey Cape Cod! Wednesday Sept 19, 2012-leatherback turtle mudt
A 7 foot, 655-pound, underweight leatherback turtle was found stuck in the mud at Cape Cod Wednesday September 19th, 2012. Leatherback turtles of such size are usually about 1,000 pounds in weight. The leatherback turtle was treated for oxygen and blood deficiences and re-released in the sea; as they have never survived nor lived in aquariums. Co-incidentally that evening, Stu Allen & his Mars Hotel band segwayed into the "Terrapin Suite" with the strains of darkness, in excellent pacing at the local community hall, Ashkenaz, in Berkeley, California. Zow! Also co-incidentally, Trinidad seaside developers or sum such governmental bozos bulldozed hundreds of baby leatherback turtles on the beachside coast in mis-taken needs for a project. The spokesperson for the news video I saw on BCC was quoted saying, "you have to be nuts to do such a thing." Dozens of baby turtles were seen in boxes crawling about with the news person's statement, they are faced with a dominant preditor potential and usually do not suceed in reaching adulthood. ...7 foot aging turtleback panter sez..."uh huh uh huh...." .

You'll probably be pleased as punch that the latest installment of the Taper's Section includes a segment from 11-17, something you'd requested only last week!

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music from 1972, 1973 and 1989.

Our first stop this week is on 11/15/72 in Oklahoma City, where we have a nice batch of typical 1972 first set material featuring Bird Song, Jack Straw, Candyman, Big River, Sugaree, El Paso, Box Of Rain, Deal, Cumberland Blues.

Next up is music from 9/17/73 in Syracuse, NY, where we have more first set material, including Sugaree, Mexicali Blues, Loser, Looks Like Rain, Row Jimmy. This was the tour that featured horns occasionally in the second set, which although interesting at times, was thankfully a short-lived experiment.

Lastly this week we have the entire first set from 10/12/89 in New Jersey, the second of a five night run at the Meadowlands. From this show, we have Hell In A Bucket>Sugaree, Blow Away, Tennessee Jed, Queen Jane Approximately, Bird Song, Jack Straw. Our apologies for the three versions of Sugaree this week, as well as a couple of Bird Songs and Jack Straws.

Be sure to join us next week for more tunes from the vault.

Probably a top 5 all-time stretch for the band, so many great shows. Dicks 26 is hugely under-rated. I dearly loved my hissy Jersey City and Hofheinz cassettes, among the first to wear out. If there is anything in the vault that sounds good enough to issue, I think it would be a winner.

Dick's Picks 26 is from 4-26/27-69. Do you mean Dick's Picks 23 from Baltimore 9-17-72, DP 36 from 9-21-72 Philly, or possibly DP 11 from 9-27-72 Stanley Theatre Jersey City? True, you really can't go wrong with any of the Fall '72 stuff.

I guess Veneta is or will be a fine, popular choice for the next 2H-72 release, whenever it happens. As the Europe 72 box fades into the rear view mirror, we will hopefully see periodic Fall '72 releases again, after a ~7 year gap.

I would agree that 9/17 until the end of the month constitues one of the great 2 week periods in GD history. I don't think Oct/Nov is at quite the same level, though still solid. 9/15 and 9/16 circulate only in partial SBD and would be welcome releases, if they exist in full, or close to it, in the vault.

Agreed on all of the Fall 72 comments... though I actually think October and November have the edge on September collectively... They are a bit less tight, but more wide open and "out there" and lots of Keith electric piano. Seems like they were moving rapidly into the jazzy 73 sound and November is the benificiary of this evolution. Hofheinz yes! And those mid-October Dark Stars with the Philo Stomp, and oh God Wichita Wichita Wichita.... One of the Top Five periods? Easily. My favorite? (if I had to pick) YES. Even over Europe 72... (!)

when the time comes for release, post-Europe 1972 shows get the same love as Europe Tour! (Still can't believe I actually OWN Europe '72!!!) 'stache - you know how 4/07 always was kept under wraps? Let's hope it's the same for 9/15 & 9/16, among others. I'm listening to 9/15 in my car. Oh, well. Not even wide open windows on the highway can help this one! Will get through 9/16 and then the jewel one - 9/17/72. Can't remember - how's 9/19? And then 9/21 - yay again. And we're pretty good through the end of the month. I guess all we can hope is that the wheels keep turnin' business-wise, 'cause we've got a lot of classics to look forward to! Soon come, as they say in Jamaica. I'm ready for an announcement, y'all.

I don't think there is ever a necessity to apologize for too many Sugarees. I believe that phrase is an oxymoron. I agree whole-heartedly about the need for additional releases of the fall 1972 tour. The St Louis shows were awesome but so were many others from that period. It seems that a revival of the Download series would be a good vehicle if there are great shows in the vault that perhaps don't live up to the sound quality deemed necessary for a Dave's Pick or Boxed set release. In whatever form, more fall 72 would be indeed welcome.

I raise up a Stone IPA. Here's to Sherbear....Willd, Witty, and Wonderous! We always enjoy your art and comments. About the '72 Fall stuff, just received DP 11 yesterday and exclaimed, "This is the best show I've heard!" I don't have that many '72 shows, but do agree: Springfield Creamery is epic (aching to see this mysterious VHS) and 9/27 was well worth the 30 bucks I spent on it. Although, I miss Pigpen, his sound, soul and unique chemistry he brought to the table, in this era, the song selection and Jerry's voice are the highlights of fall '72. Still, there are many shows I should hear within the Summer '72 to Fall '73 to completely grasp this evolution of the band.

9/19, like 9/15, as I recall, is a difficult to listen to AUD. How about a mini-box of 9/15, 9/16 and 9/19?

Love the three show configuration - however, I must say I'd love it even more if a by-month for the rest of '72 series of boxes went in to the works! Whoa!!! Greedy SOB I am, what? BTW - I closed my windows for the second disc/meat of 9/15. It's not so bad, really - in fact, excellent! How ever it is to be done, I'll be a happy camper - Go PTB!

Speaking of Fall '72 AUD's which I would love to hear in official SBD release: 11/13/72 Kansas City. If you have not heard this yet, well, much of the AUD is kinda painful, lots of patches etc., BUT it is well worth a listen - a monumental show. Anyway, if it is available in the Vault in SBD (anyone know?) the Dark Star > Dew in this show would leap to the top of many "best of" lists. Likewise, the 11/17/72 Wichita show is available in a so-so SBD, an official release would be so sweet. If KC is a loosy-jazzy space fest, Wichita is a balls-out rockfest. Something about these November midwest shows. Now THAT is a box I would buy. ("Cold Rain and Snow: Midwest, Fall '72")

Sound quality of what circulates definitely hampers my enjoyment for this period. There is no or just a partial circulating SBD for 10/21, 10/23, 10/24 and 10/30. And even for many of the shows for which a full SBD circulates, the quality is much less than stellar (see especially 11/26, 11/24 and 11/19). If this stuff is in the vault, I don't know what they're waiting on.

Bear made an audience recording of 11-13-72. There is no soundboard recording. That Dark Star>Morning Dew is spectacular! I would like to see the complete show for 11-18-72 as it contains a superb 'Box of Rain' (or so I was told by DL!) According to some info. from here much of the Fall '72 tour doesn't exist in the vault!

baking muffins. get to the place where i add baking powder and salt. Pigpen sings "I take a little powder, take a little salt". I love synchronicity like that.

Thanks for the link Wilfred, to the Nov 2009 Taper's Section. Must have missed that one.. While it is painful that there is no SBD for 11/13, I guess (as so often) we should thank God for Bear getting us what we have. The good news though is that it would seem that there ARE many chunks of Nov 72 in the Vault (listening to the great Brokedown from OKC right now thanks to you :-)
