    this week's TS
Of course, I jumped on the '72 clip like most others probably did. I'm working on the '82 clip right now, and you're right DL it's starts off nice and burning with a ripping Minglewood opener (that pretty much ended as a phenomenon in '82, right?) After the tune, they follow that with a peppy version of TLEO, marred slightly by Weir's comically out-of-tune guitar. Why he didn't better use some of the extensive "tuning" break, to actually check pitch is slightly unfortunate. I'm up to the 'early after the breakout' Dupree's, and enjoying it so far! Thanks for the picks as always DL and Thanks Dead.net!

    Springfield '72 PitB
Quite a muscular ~pastoral-spatially itinerant "Playing in the Band" in Springfield; w/good strong playing by Bob, and good cymbal rhythms from Billy.

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll check out some music from 1972, 1982 and 1987.

Our first selection this week is from the final night of the first leg of the Fall Tour of 1972, with music from 10/2/72 in Springfield, MA. From this night, we have music from the first set, featuring Cumberland Blues, Jack Straw, Don't Ease Me In, Playing In The Band. There's a reel change during Playing, so you'll hear a cut, but otherwise this sounds as good as all of Bear's recordings from this era.

From a decade later on 9/11/82 in West Palm Beach, FL, the Dead would celebrate Mickey's birthday in style with a really hot show, and from that night we have the entire first set: New Minglewood Blues ; They Love Each Other ; Me And My Uncle > Big River ; Dupree's Diamond Blues > C C Rider ; Loser ; Looks Like Rain ; Tennessee Jed > Let It Grow.

From five years later, the first night of a three night run at the Spectrum on 9/22/87, we have the start of the second set, featuring. Gimme Some Lovin', China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider, Samson and Delilah>Terrapin Station. That's Spencer Davis on Gimme Some Lovin', a very high-energy sit-in.

Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes from the vault.

Gimme Some Lovin' with Spencer Davis! He appeared as a guest again in Los Angeles on 12/10/89 for CC Rider and I'm a Man. His Spencer Davis Group, with Stevie Winwood, was a favorite of mine back in the mid-60's, along with the Dave Clark 5, when rock was played on AM radio. Really like the 1972 tunes from Springfield! Thanks DL
