My favorite summer festival is one that features incredibly unique, professional, unsigned, independent artists that truly need a high-quality exposure event to boost their careers to a level so they can earn a decent living performing and recording their musical visions. Not sure that one exists? If it does, please let me know who I can reach out to in order to be considered for a performance slot.

Watkins Glen, '72. The unexpected Friday night sound check was some of the sweetest most laid back jam I've ever heard the band do. Lots of fun despite being quite unprepared. Spent Friday night sleeping in the trunk of a car! Right up there with Barton Hall '77. I was tripping heavily for that and couldn't be sure that it was really as good as it sounded until I heard a recording of it later.

This is more of a main stream music festival but it always sprinkles in some good bluegrass (Billy Strings, and Infamous Stringdusters to name a few) John Mayer, Robert Plant, promise of The Real, Margo Price and others have given the festival some character.

I can't stand festivals! There's more than one band and sometimes more than one stage. The time spent going between stages as well as the short sets each band plays is not for me. I would much rather go to a Grateful Dead concert and get nothing but the good ol' Grateful Dead. This also applies to other acts that I might want to see.

It no longer happens, but my favorite festival fo all time was the Rooney Fest. I was lucky enough to be able to go for about 10 years in a row...This was in Deposit, NY (Upstate)... I would love to hear from anyone about this festival, as it was like a big Family Reunion of Freinds and Kind people dancing and getting muddy for 3 days - It always rained! I have not touched base with many in a long time... It was an old-time bluegrass/jam band festival. Once you got off of the road to the festival it was all private land and 'Johnny Law' was not allowed on the premises. Now I live in Big Rapids, Michigan and I think the festival of choice is Dunegrass, previously posted, DSO and Grisman.

"There Ain't Nothing Like A Grateful Garcia Gathering", and ONLY ONE day to go, the bus is up and running again! Its next stop will be the Grateful Garcia Gathering 2007 being held once again on August 2 - August 5. The 3G's will celebrate and pay tribute to the life, art, and music of legendary guitarist Jerry Garcia on what would be his 65th Birthday. This music and camping festival will once again take place at the picturesque Camp NCN Campground located in beautiful Black River Falls, Wisconsin. The campground features 60-plus acres of brilliant surroundings with tall trees that shade your camp site. For your fishing, swimming, and water sports pleasures we have a five-acre natural spring fed lake with sandy beaches, modern bathroom facilities with showers, and other luxurious accommodations. Campers will be able to have campfires at each individual campsite and firewood is available at the campground! There will be plenty of awesome vendors on-site for you to check out, a kind and friendly atmosphere, and a stellar musical lineup for all to enjoy! In addition, there is going to be BEER, WATER, SODA, CHERRY GARICA ICE CREAM, a memorabilia "Jerry Garcia Shrine" near the main stage. All attendees are encouraged to bring pictures, candles, ticket stubs, tie-dyes, old posters with Jerry's signature, any and all related items related to Jerry Garcia, or the Grateful Dead! You can place it at the shrine for all to enjoy! Festival attendees will be able to enjoy the sounds of local and regional bands who were influenced or inspired by The Grateful Dead such as, Rootstand, Chinese Fingertrap, Boney Fingers, Baghdad Scuba Review, Bowser, One Eyed Jack, Grateful Beth & The Volunteers, Jana Holland, Covert Operations, Space Quakers, Macyn Taylor, The Northwoods Band, The Weavils, Downer's Grove, The Wandering Foolz, The High Strung String Band, Bar Tab Band, Run Side Down, CedarTown Boys, The Yokanizu Project, The Orin Project, and many more! We are also opening a second stage for more live music to fill the air! All these bands will all be performing their own original tunes, plus a few covers of The Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band. All this, in tribute and honoring of Jerry Garcia, which will also mark the 12th Anniversary of his untimely passing. Singer/Songwriter Bear, will emcee and perform in between set-ups and take-downs of the performers, and may invite up special guest! In addition, there will be a very special fireworks display (weather and drought conditions permitting) for this exciting weekend of camping, music, friendships, harmony and love! The real thrill of the Grateful Garcia Gathering is the return of Melvin Seals & JGB for TWO NIGHTS! David Kemper (original drummer of the Jerry Garcia Band) will be joining Melvin Seals & JGB. The 3G's just wouldn't be complete without a musical cohort and true friend of Jerry's to be part of these wonderful festivities. Melvin Seals and David Kemper are longtime friends of Jerry Garcia. The vision of the Grateful Garcia Gathering is to keep the spirit of Jerry Garcia's music alive by bringing the music and the Deadhead fans together as family! Opening for Melvin Seals & JGB (For Two Nights) is the Grateful Dead's Donna Jean Godchaux, Mookie Siegel of the David Nelson Band (and formerly a member of both Phil & Friends and Ratdog), Wendy Lanter of Hope in Time, and Jeff Mattson, Tom Circosta, Klyph Black and Dave Diamond, all of the Zen Tricksters, now create music together as "Donna Jean and The Tricksters." MoonAlice is a powerful and talented bunch of musicians many of you have seen and heard jamming throughout jamband scene! This new band will open be opening for "Donna Jean and The Tricksters," featuring Roger & Ann McNamee (The Flying Other Brothers), Barry Sless (pedal steel and lead guitarist from the David Nelson Band, Phil Lesh and Friends, Kingfish, Cowboy Jazz, The Rowan Brothers (Peter, Lorin & Chris), Pete Sears (Rod Stewart, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna, John Lee Hooker, Steve Kimock, Jerry Garcia), G.E. Smith ( click link http://www.greenmirror.com/gebio.html ), Jimmy Sanchez (Dr. John, Roy Rogers, Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, Tom Waits, Boz Scaggs). Lots of musical talent in this band! Boris Garcia (For Two Nights) will be opening for "MoonAlice." Here's what Dennis McNally (Bob Weir and Ratdog publicist) had to say about Boris Garcia: "During my 25 years with Grateful Dead Productions, I listened to a lot of jamming, both electric and acoustic. Recently, though I still work with Bob Weir, I've been approached by a fair number of bands to help them, and have usually not been moved enough by the music to say yes - until I heard Boris Garcia. They fuse a bluegrass/country/folk sound with a jazzy rock improvisation mode and really excellent songwriting. Some say it reminds them of Tom Petty, others of old Byrds. Either way, I like them, and want to share them with my larger family. So here y'are!" After 4 long years of memories, camping, music, and friendships made in Black River Falls Wisconsin, the long strange trip is over for the Grateful Garcia Gathering. The venue in Black River Falls will no longer be holding music festivals after this summer is over. The new home for the Grateful Garcia Gathering is now hosted at Legend Valley ( www.LegendValley.net ), just 20 minutes East of Columbus Ohio! Legend Valley's (formerly Buckeye Lake Music Center in Ohio) owner Steve Trickle has been in contact with the organizers of the Grateful Garcia Gathering - Tim Sundog Corcoran and Anthony Lee, since last January about the possibility's of holding it at Legend Valley, a place where the Grateful Dead performed June 11th 1993. Steve said, "This would be the natural setting for the Grateful Garcia Gathering to be held each summer". The agreement was made by a mere handshake, and a smile! The 3G's is always set to date in between Jerry Garcia's birthday August 1st, and his untimely passing of August 9th. The Grateful Garcia Gathering is scheduled for the weekend of July 31st - August 2nd 2008. Legend Valley is Ohio's #1 camping, music outdoor amphitheater. Its also home to Hookahville, Cabin Fever Festival, and Built to Last. Many great artists have graced the stages at Legend Valley such as The Grateful Dead, Ratdog, Bruce Hornsby, David Grisman, Arlo Guthrie, Ekoostik Hookah, Blue Travelers, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, AC/DC, Waylon Jennings, just to name a few! I'll take the NOT STRICTLY BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL in Golden Gate Park every Oct. It's grown to cover 3 days and stages. In the past few years they've had hundreds of acts including:Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Joan Baez, Ricky Skaggs, Bob Weir and The Waybacks, Dolly Parton, Billy Bragg, Doc Watson, Hot Tuna and many others. It's a great scene (gets a little overwhelming when 20,000 people hit one stage to see Dolly Parton or Willie at once, in a space meant for a lot less) and it's ENTIRELY FREE> First week in Oct. this year. See you in San Fran.

I went to this festival 4 years in a row, with the exception of this past year (sadly). All I can say is that this festival has never let me down. It is great. The vibe is by far the chillest "heady" experience around. The staff and audience alike are really cool. It doesn't always get the "biggest" acts, but I think that is part of what makes it sweet. Firstly, you are likely to see bands that you might not normally see, but love. Secondly, it helps keep it getting blown out and huge. It is also in a great location in the California Sierras. Simply put, a wonderful time!

I moved to Missouri from the desert in Ca., I was surrounded by famous artists who just did not jam around town. Although I did hear a garage band practicing down the street from my house one night, only to discover it was the Beach Boys playing a private party. But I'm sorry some parts of this summer in the midwest were just too darn hot. But these I enjoyed and recommend. Dogstock in Kansas, 4 stages for 4 days unbelievable # of bands new and old. Zoe (schwagstock) south central missouri an awesome experience Mushroom festival central missouri new event that was good last year and should be better this year. All had good music, good campin, good people, and reasonable prices. I have stopped attending the cattle drives of the money grubbers. older and slower, but still havin fun. watchin the rivers roll on and on. missin all those who've gone on before. I'll wait to hear the jam, when I go through that door. yet I imagine the combinations as I go through my chores. Take care everyone.

I tried to tell everybody but I could not get across Beside a local jamband festival called Come Together Music Festival near Toronto, the other festivals I've been to have been: Terrapin Station: A Grateful Dead Family Reunion in '02 Mid-Atlantic Music Experience in summer '03 Phish's It Festival, also in '03 moe.down a few years (2, 4 and 5 I think...can't find line-ups though) Bonnaroo '04 They were all really good, esp. Bonnaroo, one of the moe.downs, It and Terrapin Station. I found weather played a big part. moe.down the weather went both ways. It and Mid-Atlantic had shit weather at times. Bonnaroo was bad (rain, wind and/or thunder) about half the time. The music was usually good, sometimes awesome, sometimes tired or slow. Oh yeah, that's another thing. You need your sleep or rest, 'cause the drive, the walking, shopping/Shakedown and eating can take a bit more out of you than you think after a while. If you got the energy festivals are usually a blast, and pretty well organized, as well. You don't have to think too much, you just have to deal with road bumps here and there. Everyone's friendly and psyched. Big fun. I hope to go to Mountain Jam, Bonnaroo, either High Sierra or Rothbury, and !0klf. There are so many good bands. I've been hospitalized/recovering from surgery for about three years. I really dug dancing to the String Cheese Incident. That's a bit of a blow. Looking forward to hanging out with kind brothers and sisters.

Hey Kids, here's more scoop... ORIGINAL JEFFERSON AIRPLANE MEMBERS LAND IN ASTORIA OREGON Jefferson Airplane Originator Marty Balin will perform with members from the original band, who have not played publicly together since 1965. The historic event in Astoria, Oregon will bring together vocalist Signe Anderson (now Signe Ettlin), bassist Bob Harvey, and percussionist Jerry Peloquin reuniting with the man who started it all, Marty Balin. Their set will morph into a "family band" featuring members from the Jefferson Starship and the seldom seen Great Society, the band where Grace Slick began her singing and writing career. Darby Slick, Craig Chaquico, Slick Aguilar, and keyboardist Barry Flast will all be in the "family". Other performers will be announced, while surprise guests will not. The three day festival ticket includes parking, camping, music, and access to gourmet organic food concessions, has much more than a reunion of a lifetime planned. The spacious meadow, outlined by lush woodlands, also brings Country Joe McDonald, the Great Society, the Holy Modal Rounders, the Freak Mountain Ramblers, Alice Stuart, David & Linda LaFlamme and their band (four band members have 25 to forty years in the band) playing the music of It's a Beautiful Day, Marty Balin Band, Craig Chaquico Band, and much more. Information and ticket sales can be found at: http://www.concertforbigred.org When: August 22,23,24 Where: Clatsop Co. Fairgrounds, Astoria, Oregon What: Benefit for the Net Loft Arts Center and Lady of Honor Signe Ettlin Other headlining bands will be announced soon! ---- For those who wanna know, Bingo, Alexa Wiley, Jessica Stiles Band, Supertrout are also going to be on the program. We are still trying to snag more Dead related folks. Teddy Deane will be coming down for the show, by the way. His new Red Newt Records CD, So Far So Good, is finally here (the release party was up in Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island, a couple weeks ago). Gordo (who is the lead conspirator behind this) is trying to snag some truly major headliners, too. Early tickets should be a bargain. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Spanish Jam

Casey! What a lineup! I'm going to be on the wrong coast, but my advice is, do not miss Vince Gill. Not pyrotechnic exactly, just a darn good musician and by all accounts a sweet guy. I've never heard this officially, but I've heard that back in the day his playing caused Mark Knopfler to invite him to join Dire Straits. For whatever reason, he stuck with country... (I recommend to the general attention his duet with Dolly Parton on "I Will Always Love You," which of course Dolly wrote. First time I heard it on the radio I had to pull the car over to listen and find out what it was. It's on an apparently so-so Dolly album, but you can get it from iTunes.)

MICKEY HART BAND was simply outstanding last night!!! The Other One> Scarlet Begonias> Fire on the Mountain > GDTRFB was transendent. TOO was a wonderful ride and I wept at the wonderful Scarlet and this suite was grin and dance inducing throughout. It really was beyond words, such fine new tunes and tremendous renditions of favorites. Mickey has assembled such a fantastic group of musicians (don't ever miss Kimock!! and such sweet vocals and ensemble play) and this show ranks as one of the best post GD shows I have been lucky enough to witness. And then they treated us to an encore of Pappa was a Rollin' Stone that would make the Temptations proud. 10k is unbeatable for the vibe, the venue, line-up, and times with new and old friends, brothers and sons. This is alread a classic and we get Phil & Friends tomorrow night! I am so grateful!!! So that is the news from the northlands.

Phil & Friends on Saturday night- Perfect cool Minnesota evening with a little breeze, and they start around the time that the sun is setting. Then take a break and come roaring back with the light show and so much more!!!! Glorious and majestic interplay between great players at the top of their art. I believe this is accurate for Phil's seltlist, but after that 10 hour drive home yesterday, I maybe a bit muddled, but here goes: 1st Set: Shakedown Street, Alabama Getaway, Ball & Chain, New Minglewood Blues, BIODTL, Althea, Cosmic Charlie (Scofield & Campbell absolutly ripped it up on Althea and went wild on Cosmic!!!! ) 2nd Set: Casey Jones (at double time speed), Jam > Don't Let Me Down > Eyes of the World> Jam > Wheels on Fire >Mason's Children, Viola Lee Blues >Deal >Viola Lee Blues >Bertha > Viola Lee Blues reprise. E: Tom Thumbs Blues John Scofield sat in for the first set, but he was the only guest that night. (Teresa Williams was not there @ 10k). I thought Phil looked energized (he was grinning up a storm), as the band jammed well and they teased us constantly (china cat tease, TOO tease, Wheel tease, Mr. Charlie tease, etc. etc.) during those wonderful jams. I gotta say that I truly enjoy this version of Phil & Friends. Greene, Campell, Molitz, and Molo were charging right out of the gate! (Wasn't there a rider tease in there as well, or am I having a flashback of '77?) Anyway, ladies and gentlemen, please give a listen to their version of "Don't Let Me Down", it was a wonderful surprise of a John Lennon song with perfect vocals from the boys. Exceptional!! Also, I would have LOVED to see Kimock sit in, especially in that second half. Kimock's stratospheric guitarwork with Mickey Hart Band (on Thursday) was transportive, and the MHB's version of Sugaree was stellar (Kimock had some amp problems during the first 3 songs or so, but then got it 'just exactly perfect'). And his playing was so expansive, textured, atmospheric runs, and just downright tasty (shit, I ran out of adjectives). Jen Durkin and George Porter's vocals were wonderful (and his bass playing was the BOMB, er as my boys would say). Hollingsworth, Reyes, and the master of the talking drum Sikiru Adepoju completed Mickey's palate of colors that day. I was just excited to see both Phil and Mickey having so much fun, playing so well, and surrounded by musicians that they are inspired by and they want to play with. In my opinion both the new and old blood there, enhanced the whole show and there was fine improvisation, musicianship, exploration, heart and soul, all those qualities that drew me to the Dead back in the early '70s. I saw both bands pushing it, taking chances, not playing it safe, either in song selection or in their performance. Phil and Mickey both looked like they were having the time of their lives. And I was along for the ride. Big time. BUT I suppose if Master Kimock had graced the stage with Phil that second half, it might have just cracked the spacetime continuum and that could have then erupted with a new crater (in my mind) at the 10,000 lakefest venue, which might have endangered us all. Or maybe the boys are saving that for next time? Ahhhh, next time!! (Homer Simpson voice and saliva drool).

Glastonbury was an incredible festival this year! some of the stuff I checked out... Jimmy Cliff Buddy Guy Neil Diamond The Verve Leonard Cohen ...there were stacks of other bands. There was all the crazy stuff with Amy Winehouse punching a fan in the audience, Pete Doherty not being too wasted to play. The latest newer up and coming English bands. James Blunt actually sounding like he was playing from the heart instead of being a wanna be pop boy like he sounds like on his albums. Lots of surprising stuff. Like the way the English don't waive their drug use around quite so openly as Americans, same with dealing, couldn't see it happening very easily, unlike US festivals. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Are you kind?"

What's up guys, I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about the inaugural Chicago Bluegrass & Blues festival, this 11/22 at the historic Congress Theater, all benefiting the Saving Tiny Hearts Societies fight against the country's most common birth defect. www.cbgbfestival.com The first 10 folks that hit me up at michael.raspatello@gmail.com will get a pair of tickets mailed to them. We're excited for you to help us spread the word about this righteous endeavor

The Schwag are a Grateful Dead tribute band and they truly keep the vibe alive with their summerlong festivals in the heart of the Ozarks (salem-ish, MO) They have been playing for about 18 years and truly embody the passion and spirit The Dead started...True torch-bearers. JGB has played there, as have the members of String Cheese Incident..they have a wide array of music, from Reggae to Bluegrass, and everything in between...along with a bunch of vendors, great prices on food, their own store with all of the necessities and much more, etc...All of this on a breathtaking campground with thousands of beautiful, kynd, likeminded Heads. visit: www.theschwag.com for audio samples, pics, chat forum (including live show downloads for free) more importantly, visit: Camp ZOE (Schwagstock) -pugdog420

mkay, I've only been to one venue... 10klf, only missed one year to date, but I would find it hard to top.Excellent camping, hardly ever a line more than 1-2 people (usually none) for either a beer or to use the restroom, and the last couple years had killer lineups. If there was a gripe, it would be the cold showers. Putting a couple of picnic tables by the food vendors wouldn't kill them either.

I went to Wakarusa in 05, 06 and 07 and except for the heat and chiggars had a ball. Yarmony Grass at Copper Mtn. last August was cold - it snowed one night - but I stayed comfortable and it was a ripping weekend of music. This is a String Cheese family event, with all those guys plus Keller, RRE, Cornmeal, HBR, Greensky... awesome fun in the Colorado mountains. They also do an eletronica thing in June - Sonic Bloom Festival - with folks like STS9, EOTO, Pnuma... Looks worth checking out if you're into the space. Gonna try Desert Rocks this year and planning on some great times.
