Hornets' nests are fun to stir up.
8/13/87. McDonald's burger (no cheese). no stellarness, i say, none. (except for the Stella(r) Blue.) HAHAHAHAHAHA 12/12/69: personal chef making a 7 course meal, with 420 varieties of dessert to choose from. One man's grumpy opinion. every so often, a McBurger is "the only game in town", and it suffices. but having a personal chef making up a smorgasbord of yum? Excellent. Of course I think I'm more right than DL2. But he sure picks some good 'uns.

    Leggo My Ego
When I made an inquiry to Dave Lemieux about the Alpine '87 recordings, I also asked about Red Rocks '87. He said the tapes sounded excellent and that the performances were stellar. So who is more right? A handful of people who don't like '87 (or anything post '70s) Dead who blog on an internet forum, or the man who is releasing the music from the vault and the millions upon millions of people who have purchased "In The dark"? The anti-era sentiment around here is peculiar. Kudos to those here who get into ALL eras of the Dead.

    Speak for yourself Grumpy!
One thing I never do is tell other people what to listen too.It is well known that there is somewhat of a lack of releases from this era. Personally I believe that December 86 through spring 1990 has a TON of amazing shows and video. 1989 is pretty well represented though there are many more shows that should see release. Looks like 12-12-69 is defiantly going to be DP10 though.

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll check out some Grateful Dead music from 1973, 1979 and 1987.

Our first stop is on 12/6/73 in Cleveland, when the Dead were heading toward the of one of their best years, 1973, and from the first set of this fine show we have Beat It On Down The Line ; Deal ; El Paso ; Row Jimmy ; Greatest Story Ever Told ; China Cat Sunflower> I Know You Rider ; Around And Around.

Next up is music from Brent's first year in the Grateful Dead, 1979, with the opening of the second set from 12/5/79 in Chicago, the third night of an excellent three night stand. Shakedown Street, Samson And Delilah, Ship Of Fools, He's Gone > The Other One. I'm always a big fan of the pre-Drums Other Ones, and this one delivers.

Lastly this week is the start of the first set from 9/20/87, the final night at Madison Square Garden during their five night return to MSG after four years away. From that show we have Jack Straw> West L.A. Fadeaway, My Brother Esau,; Far From Me , It Must Have Been The Roses, Desolation Row. The Desolation Row gets cut off as that's where the tape flip is on this master cassette, but rest assured the entire song does exist on the master PCM digital recording.

Be sure to join us next week fore more music from the vault.

...this Shakedown is very Phil phriendly! And speaking of the shakes, that's just what Phil's low phrequency bombs are doing to my home's phrame and phoundation! HAHA!

Does that mean that your going to RELEASE this soon? How about all five nights in a box set? Or better yet, how about a DVD/Blu-ray Box of the run? We really need more shows on DVD/Blu-ray. The last one was Philly 89 and that was YEARS ago!

American Reality. I think some sort of 80's box would be worthy. And MSG Fall 87' has some big shows. My belief was the next 80's release would have a Brother Esau and West LA Fadeaway. All 5 nights from MSG seem to have highlights and Spectrum run too

View from the Vault 4 was OUTSTANDING! Two great 87' shows. Give us some more, we know you got 'em! I'm tired of hearing that nothing after 1974 is box-worthy. EVERY year has something and in most cases ALOT to offer.

American Reality there are definitely some great show's from 1987. More video from the late 1980's and 90's would be great too.

I'll stick with the 70's: wish there were more cameras rolling after Veneta. Thanks for the Cleveland tunes. China > Feelin'Groovy > Rider rocks.

at the '87 Alpine Valley shows. The vault recordings for this run have never circulated. I made an inquiry to David Lemieux about them and he said the Healy experimental matrix mixes didn't turn out too well. I'd still like to hear them. If better quality tapes and/or video from Alpine Valley '87 circulated, this run would be rated very highly among trading circles and convert even the most jaded of anti-80s Deadheads.

Of course the seventies were better , but who cares I still want some late eighties. When I became a deadhead most of the shows I had were middle to late eighties. With having a hard life I constantly was looking to the dead to lift me back up to the light of day and those eighties era shows helped me every time. May not be as good as seventies but it's all 'grateful dead'. So I don't really understand the hate for this era.

We should all take a break from this Grateful Dead thing and get some perspective. 70s 80s 60s 90s box set of rehearsals. that said, i keep coming back here to get the next DaP, even though I have told myself enough is enough is enough (too much of everything is just enough). rumor has it or fact has it 12/12/69. GOTTA HAVE IT. red rocks 87 must wait. there is no comparison. I have listened to one of those 87 RR shows...like an old piece of chewing gum. Week long romantic erotic getaway with the hottest person of your choice...or barbecuing solo with a copy of glamour. Which would YOU rather experience? "I'll take the former, please." re taking a break: listen to something DIFFERENT like Fitz and the tantrums, or Mindless Self Indulgence, or My Chemical Romance, or whatever. Sincerely, Grumpy Grumpkins

People need to put their egos in dry-dock for awhile. My friends at the time I got into the dead were calling me the devil but I'm still here.

We get it stoltzfus you can dial it back a little. You can't compare '69 with '87 the boy's were young in '69 and '87 Rocks Jerry was one year out of a coma and had to learn how to play guitar all over again (thanks Merl) you can't expect the same kind of playin' in the band. HAHAHA DaP 10 I am ecstatic. If any man got no sin upon his hand let him cast a stone at me for playin' in the band. HAHAHA

Thoroughly enjoying the 87, pretty typical of the songs they played that year but enjoyable nonetheless. Saw shows in Hampton and Chicago in the spring, in California in June, and at Alpine later on that summer. And sure enough in typical "only at a Dead show" fashion ran into 2 people that I had met at a campground on Mt. Tam in June among the 40,000+ throng at Alpine. How cool is that? "The Desolation Row gets cut off as that's where the tape flip is on this master cassette, but rest assured the entire song does exist on the master PCM digital recording" - do I sense a release in the works?
