    May 12 - May 18, 2014

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll check out some Grateful Dead music from 1972, 1973 and 1987.

Our first selection this week is from 1/2/72 at Winterland, the first show of what would prove to be one of the best years of Grateful Dead music in their 30 year performing career. From this show we have the end of the first and the start of the second set, featuring Brown-Eyed Women, Casey Jones; Good Lovin'>China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider>Good Lovin'. This split Good Lovin' remains one of the coolest sequences of a great year.

Next is music from the terrific 10/25/73 show in Madison, WI, where we have El Paso, Row Jimmy, Playing In The Band. The start of El Paso is missing from the master reel, but this is otherwise a great-sounding, and well-played, sequence.

Lastly this week is the start of the second set of the Dead's final night of a five night run at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where the band played Hell In A Bucket > Iko Iko > Looks Like Rain > He's Gone. This run of shows marked the Dead's return to Madison Square Garden after a four year absence.

Be sure to join us here next week for more great tunes from the vault.

methinks there is no IKYR in the 72 sequence
i could be wrong, of course. My memory is like swiss cheese: lots of creamy goodness, with a few holes. In any event, it is a great jam. Thank you for the weekly treats, y'all. s'fus a-ha! no IKYR. Great jam.

Is from Tempe 11-25-73. 72-73 and 77' are my favorite years from a day-in , day-out stand point. Although some of my favorite Dead tunes are not performed in any of those. Ex. Mountains of the Moon. Release 6-10-73. A monster setlist with some monster versions from a top show in a top year.

1987. From a fascinating east coast run in September. Would make a cool box if some prime cuts or full shows were used. That exact clip is 2nd set opener 9-20-87. I got my money on a sweet West L.A. and Brother Esau for one of the upcoming releases (Daves or box ). And this show fits the bill. Plus it has desolation row. Plus double encore.
