Hey Man, Yessah- some adventurous playing during the Fall '84 East coast swing for sure Lots of Knob Twiddling in Hartford We all came away with Good AUD Masters from Hartford, both nights. The talk of the tour was, of course, the "Majestic" Augusta Maine performance. In a word, Fantastic! The Playing reprise surprise... Yup, good stuff Merci beaucoup Monsieur Lemieux shwack in nh

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music from 1973, 1983 and 1984.

Our first section this week is from 10/29/73 in St. Louis, the first of a two night run on an excellent tour, about as close to the a promotional album tour as the Dead would get, as Wake Of The Flood had been released just two weeks earlier on October 15, with the tour starting on October 19 on Oklahoma City. From the end of the first set we have Don't Ease Me In, Black-Throated Wind, Tennessee Jed, Race Is On, Row Jimmy, Eyes Of The World>China Doll, Around and Around.

Next up is music from 9/4/83 in Park West, UT, featuring the first set: Bertha>Promised Land, Friend Of The Devil, Little Red Rooster, Tennessee Jed>My Brother Esau, Althea>Hell In A Bucket, China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider. It's always a treat to play the then-new My Brother Esau.

Lastly this week is the first set from 10/15/84 in Hartford, CT, featuring Hell In A Bucket > Sugaree > El Paso; Bird Song ; C C Rider ; Tennessee Jed ; Jack Straw > Keep Your Day Job. This tour was filled with adventurous playing, including some truly majestic shows like 10/12/84 in August.

Be sure to join us next week for more tunes from the Grateful Dead vault.

That's a good question jeffr: I'll estimate we're still 2 months off. Anyone know what "114 days" printed up top refers to on this Sept. 8-14 Tapers Section page? Thanks for the '73 feature!

Yes, the days left until the 50th Anniversary year of 2015 starts.

Sounds like that Park West '83 set is an AUD source. Matrix maybe? I don't know how much experimenting they're doing in the vault, but this doesn't sound like the board tape on archive.org...

Definitely sounds like an AUD. I've noticed that a lot lately - even on Sirius - last week had Buffralo 5/9/77 AUD and Nassau 1/10/79 AUD.

Thanks for the tip on the magic number up top. http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2012/11/26/deadhead Here's a good read about Grateful Dead and their recording history, from the New Yorker. It mentions soundboard guru Dan Healy blending-in audience sound during concerts. The Park West '83 show must-ve been one of those recordings! Interesting info about Betty Cantor, too.

Boy, would I love 10/12/84 to be the next Pick. I recall hearing the tapes in the vault were not great or maybe not complete and the crunching sound glitch in the second set was messy, but this was an incredible performance. Thirty years ago. Hell, Dave could even chat on the rocky coast of Maine! Lots of Puffins and Terns for our viewing pleasure. Why do I torture myself with these thoughts?
