No doubt that the best shows I saw were the Frank Zappa concerts I attended: Cologne 1979, 1980 (together with Santana), 1982, 1988 Dortmund 1988 Frankfurt 1992 (The Yellow Shark) Besides some Dylan shows incl. his recent appearance in Düsseldorf. Tom Petty 1992 in Essen was pretty cool as well.

This year's Bonnaroo "Super Jam", featuring John Paul Jones (Zeppelin) on bass, QuestLove Thompson (Roots) on drums and Ben Harper on guitar was the sickest, most disgusting, face melting, psychedelic experience I've had in a long while (since Phil's Vegoose 2006 marathon, in fact). The Flaming Lips @ this year's Bonnaroo was also one of the best shows I've ever seen. Now that they have a full time drummer, their music has gotten back to professional levels. They always put on a great show and Wayne Coyne is probably the most personable rock star in history. They did "War Pigs" for a sound check an hour before they actually started the show that was incredible! The whole show was a magical mix of music and imagery finishing with The Rolling Stones, "Moonlight Mile" for an encore. A very psychedelic show in many regards. DSO @ The Funk Box in Baltimore, MD. 2003 & 2004 were two of the best shows I've ever seen, period! ABB @ Bonnaroo 2003 with Herring, Trucks and Haynes - incredible! Dave & Friends Cruise 2006 - "Private Island" concert featuring Trey on guitar was off the hook! World Party's US tour last year. I saw three shows (Bonnaroo, Ram's Head on Stage and The Recher Theatre) and all were good. Bonnaroo featured Ian Dury (Blockheads) on guitar which gave it a special groove but this current version of Karl Wallinger's band hit their stride at the Ram's Head on Stage show, IMO. Karl shares the most personable rock star status with Wayne Coyne. Please come back to the US, World Party!!!! Metalica, Summer Sanitarium Tour in 1998 (Baltimore, MD.). Peter Gabriel during his last US tour @ The MCI Center (now the Verizon Center) in DC. Last year's Bonnaroo "Super Jam", featuring Trey, Mike Gordon and the Benevento and Russo Duo was also killer. Trey's 70 Volt Parade @ Ohio's Veteran's Theater in 2005(?) was a great show and performance. Most every Particle show I've seen has been magical. I haven't seen them since Charlie Hitchcock left the band, though. CSN&Y 2001(?) @ MCI Center (now the Verizon Center). Neil Young broke every string on his guitar playing the last song "Cinnamon Girl", then used the dangling strings like a drum on the body of the guitar and frets, leaving it on stage practically smouldering under a spot light. I saw why he was considered the grandfather of grunge, on that particular night anyway. "That nug really tied the room together, did it not?"

Has anyone seen the Goosecreek Symphony? Someone recently turned me on to them but I have not seen them live. They are descibed as sounding like the Grateful Dead if they were from Kentucky rather than California or if Jimi Hendrix and Bill Monroe were in the same band. They went defunct in the 1970s and have recently reformed. I'd be interested to hear any experiences seeing this group.

couldn't begin to tell you all the GREAT shows that i have seen- after of 1000's of live shows (i use to work in radio so for a five year period i must have averaged 4 shows a week- every type of music imaginable- add this to an early love of concerts- my first at twelve years old= a lot of music) let's try Butthole Surfers Toronto 1987- two drummers, gibby setting stuff on fire, Terressa the toothless toppless dancer, the upside down sex change operation, as well as other 16mm films, smoke and mayhem for a continuous 90 min.- one of my favourite bootlegs i have made- the flaming lips opened but they were backlit and covered up with a smoke machine so they were heard and not seen- both band ripped through a cover of R.E.M.'s this one goes out to the one i love- just ripped the humour out of them. 1988/1989 were good also R.E.M. back in 1985? This is when they rocked- a whole encore set made up of requests from the crowd Phish N.Y.E. in Worcester Mass?- the one with the Giant clam. The Art designer from the Residents had something to do with it... very fun N.Y.E. in Florida 1999/2000 What can you say bad about a band that plays ALL night- the trip was unforgettable- my wife was seven months pregnent- we left a cold snap in Canada- drove down and left with a ton of memories. Ornette Coleman- playing the Victoriaville musique d'actualle festival - standing on the pulpit of a Cathlic Church in small town R.C. Quebec- free jazz blow out- Same festival i saw Fred Frith play Three times- one of the best music festivals in the world and it is in a town of a couple thousand french canadiens. Los Lobos 1983 Toronto at the 'Junkie' bar 'Larry's Hideaway'- took my girl friend to see King Crismon that night(Three of a Perfect pair tour) and ended up at a tiny bar dancing on tables, with hardcore punkers, greasers, rockabilly babes, hispanics, and other outsiders- i had their first E.P. but Los lobos blew everyone aawy!! it was like being at the best wedding reception in the world- love, laughter, acceptance and fun. This is why next to the Dead, Dylan, Phish i have seen Los Lobos the most.- i get to see them in 10 day's at the Bluesfest in Ottawa. (Dylan, Van Morrison, Moe) Acid mother Temple and the U.f.O. Paradisio- i saw them about two months ago- if after all these years i can still be amazed- and walk out of a show thinking that i just saw something i had never seen before you knows its good. From japan, AMT has been turned away at the border twice, the third time was a charm. Killdozer 1989? in toronto at the Drake- Just me and my friends- got really drunk with them after this show in a van in the rain, trying to interview them... they inject humour with the intellect not being cheated. Slow, Loud, Funny. Bongwater- Montreal 1992? same week i saw Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Overkill. Kramer played a Hofner Bass with his head, while Ann Magneson wore lingerie, and belted out tunes. Talking Heads at the second Ploice Picnic in Toronto, along with the English Beat, they stole the show- made the ploice look like punks onstage. The Talking Heads were doing the Remain in Light Tour- Busta Jones- Adrian Belew- and 9? others on stage. Maybe 1980? Joe strummer weeks before he died at a industry party- reminded me of why i was so angry growing up- and seeing the Clash (twice) Dylan- one shows was great i'm sure. Dead- i really enjoyed the Hamilton run of shows- i didn't have to cross the border- and could twist all my friends arms that never wanted to travel to see them- but really i have too many shows to narrow it down. This is just some- Honourable mentions Residents- the history of music in three parts tour, Lou Reed - New York City Tour with half japanese Planet Drum- in Vermont- Left the Air at my Radio gig- drove from Ottawa to Stowe and back again in the same night. Tortoise- one show in Toronto at Lee's Palace- was exceptional Red Hot Chili Peppers with their original guitarist, T.S.O.L., and Thelonious Monster played for all twelve of us in Barrymore's Ottawa. Elvis Costello- with or without the Attractions. Henry Rollins/Jesus Lizard/Rage Against the Machine/ Sonic Youth/Fugazi JOHNNY FUnKin' Cash and the June Carter Family- We had to steal a friends parents car (i was sixteen) to go see them- they played on a revolving stage at Ontario Place for $5 - they opened with Ring Of Fire- played the whole night- it was so cool- not so cool was explaining why we took their car to a concert... but it was Johnny Cash man!!! They were pissed but thirty years later i live next to them, and had them over to dinner- i explained why we did it and all these years later they found it as funny as we do. what's so funny about peace love and understanding.?!

I went to see the show at the Sunken Gardens Theatre in San Antonio, Texas back in 1985. That was my first psychedelic show and I have been in line with that ever since. Ronnie Montrose opened up and the feeling from each show was out of this world. I guess you could say that was one of the defining moments that put the acid spin on life and really opened up a new world. I have never taken acid, but people who have and read my poetry or seen my drawings are sure I did and just forgot LOL. Santana and Eric Johnson on stage at the same time comes pretty close. They were at the Sunken Gardens as well. Love ya, Uncle DeadHead.

The opening act for the second time I saw Ronnie Montrose was a band called PoDunk (sp?). They went all over the place with wonderful sounds. If you ever get the chance to catch them, expect to have you mind blown. Another cool act you should see when possible is WireTrain. They opened for Dylan and were out of this world. . UncleDead.

I did not see the Mountain Stage show (Sun afternoon), but, saw them the night before (Sat. nite) at a local dive called the Empty Glass, which used to be operated in downtown Chas'ton by one the Mountain Stage house band's guitarists- Michael Lipton. ...Goose Creek at the Empty Glass, a lil' hole-in-the-wall which, if packed, might hold 100-150 people. Indeed, the proper setting fer the Goose. Classic hillbilly-acid-rock. Check out their albums... I highly recommend "Words Of Earnest". Also saw there (at the Empty Glass), in 1992- Jorma and Michael Falzarano (duo) do some classic Hot Tuna/Jorma jams. One of the best shows i've seen. Also, have seen at Mountain Stage in Charleston- 1992- Bruce Hornsby (Bruce came out and chatted with us for 15 or 20 mins. after the show, asking how the Dead were arrangign certain songs/harmonies, etc., now that he was not touring with them... he is one first-class dude). 1991- REM. they played only two or three shows in '91... this was one of them. Various late 80's-early 90's shows at the Music In The Mountains bluegrass fest (Summersville WV)- Bill Monroe, JD Crowe, Ralph Stanley, Jim & Jesse McReynolds, Ricky Skaggs, Osborne Brothers, Lou Reid & Carolina, Chubby Wise, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Eddie Adcock, Country Gentlemen, etc...

a few favorite concerts (other than the dead) Living Colour-1989. My cousin took me to see the Stones at the Medowlands in 1989. Living Colour opened and blew the Stones away. They really had no business even coming on the stage after the torrent of rock offered by Living Colour (Unknown musicians) 1991-1993. Gettysburg bluegrass/music store. Every Friday night these local bluegrass musicians would gather in the small storefront in downtown Gettysburg and play the most amazing bluegrass I've ever heard. These were old-timers right off South Mountain or the farm. My friends and I made it a point to catch them most Friday nights. I wonder if this still happens? Rush/Primus- 1992. I think I still have hearing loss after this tight and intense show! Tommy the Cat at home in La Villa Strangiato! Pearl Jam (Lollapalooza 1992). I've seen them about a dozen times since, but this will always be my favorite. The Meat Puppets- 1993. Psychedelic cow-punk! Husker Du meets the Grateful Dead. I was at a loss for words for like three days after seeing these guys. Whatever happened to them? Phish- (Halloween 1994) My friends arranged this road trip to Glens Falls as my going away present (I left for the Navy three weeks later). Second set, three words: THE. WHITE. ALBUM. Insanity. Vacuums. Trey on drums. I love my friends! Allman Brothers 1997. Right after Christmas in Jacksonville FL. The first time I'd ever seen them. Hooray for Warren! String Cheese Incident 2002. Radio City. Burning Down The House! Bob Dylan 2004. I know Dylan can be hit or miss, but this particular show at American U was crazy. I almost wet myself when he played Hazel. Incredible. Dylan was on fire. My Morning Jacket (bonnaroo 2004) You know how the Dead could sometimes seemingly control the weather? Well, My Morning Jacket opened the heavens at the end of their set with a face melting 13 min Steam Engine.

....the fucking Eagles!!!!!! Actually, unlike my silver screen hero (The Dude) I saw the Eagles in the 70's (78 or 79, I think) at the Capital Center in Largo, MD and they were awesome! They played everything! Jimmy Buffett opened and no one knew him, then. He was actually very good, as well (I have to admit). Man I wish I had seen the Outlaws. I just re-discovered "Green Grass and High Tides Forever" and it reminded me of the great guitar players we had "back in the day" (and how many there were). Not that there aren't any around now a days. I never saw Phish but I wish I had, as well. I do have "Live from Brooklyn" dvd and the second disc is one of my favs. I've seen Trey with Phil three times and they've all been brain burners. I've seen Trey with Dave Mathews twice (Bonnaroo 2004, Dave & Friends Cruise 2006) and both were great although the Dave & Friends Cruise concert was completely off the hook, until the winter squall came on us and nearly washed us off the island. Trey is awesome! The Dude Abides!

I live in the desert, which is very hot in the summertime of course. In the mid-eighties, Santana played a show at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, Arizona. It's a small circular building with a round stage which revolves in the center of it. It was a moderately hot summer night and the temperature wasn't really unbearable. At the beginning of the show Carlos Santana announced that he didn't want to play in a closed air-conditioned building. So he requested that all the exterior doors to the theater be opened up and the air-conditioning turned off. He wanted to allow the instruments "To Breath!" Santana shows draw a really diverse crowd and everyone was into it. We were all hot and sweaty, but it was great fun. It was a great show. Come to think of it, I've yet to see a bad Santana performance. ; ) The months of July, August and September are the monsoon season in Arizona. Storm fronts develop out of the Gulf of California or the Gulf of Mexico and blow north across the desert. The rainfall and the drop in temperatures are a welcome relief to the summer heat. First, southern Arizona and Tucson receive rain showers in morning. As a storm moves northward the wind picks up sand and dirt from the desert floor and forms a large wall of dust. By late afternoon the dust storm reaches Phoenix. Usually, it's followed by a heavy downpour. The wind knocks over trees and the lightning knocks out the power in various parts of the city. The rain really cools things off, but the storms can be hazardous as well. Well, one July evening in the early eighties, the Pat Metheny Group was scheduled to perform at the Mesa Amphitheater in Mesa, Arizona. It's a medium-sized venue with a terraced lawn and open seating. On the afternoon of the show a monsoon storm was approaching the Valley which raised concerns about the safety of the crowd and the equipment on stage. Instead of cancelling the show, they decided to move all the equipment inside the Grady Gammage Auditorium on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe. It's a beautiful, Frank Lloyd Wright building designed with acoustics in mind. Since it was an open seating show, you could sit anywhere you wished. :) We sat in the balcony and the sounds from Pat Metheny's guitar filled ever small space of the auditorium. The musicians seemed to really get into the acoustics of the space and the sounds they created. It was one of the best performances I've ever attended.

If you haven't checked these guys out you should. I saw them a few times in the Bay Area before I moved to Maui (that was 6 years ago) and i think they sound better than ever now - they came to Maui about a year ago - they played at a small club called Hapa's - when we got there i went onto the floor and could feel the bass come up through my feet - tears of joy streamed from my eyes because i finally felt like i was "home" . . .Not much in the way of lyrics unless a lovely woman by the name of Audio Angel accompanies them during a set - but great jams/improv/drums - these guys are the shit - there are a lot of live shows on archive.org and also you can listen to sts9 radio at sts9.com if you want to check it out. . .highly recommend it:) ~KRISSY~

Brian has a tremendous band and his show bears no resemblance to the farce that is the current Beach Boys, which is actually a disinterested Mike Love and some hired guns. Los Lobos (June 2007) just plain blew the roof off the Coach House, a long time nightclub in San Juan Capistrano, CA. The wolf will indeed survive!

The last show I went to was in Spokane, Wash. July 2004. The woman I was dating at the time wanted to go see Shania Twain. At first, I was reluctant about it. But since Shania is easy on the eyes, I agreed to go. I was pleasantly surprised. Most of the members of her band are from Australia. Their music is not country western, it's more like Jazz-Fusion. The musicians are very talented and their music was really good. And, I've never seen anyone move around so much as Shania Twain. She is constantly in motion during the entire show. The opening act was a band called Emerson Drive. The lead guitarist was wearing a Grateful Dead t-shirt. During one of their songs, they broke out into an extended instrumental, which morphed into Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" for a while. I have to admit it was pretty good. ; )

Taj Mahal Trio 2006 Asheville @ Warren Haynes XMAS Jam - Everything that is awesome about music. Santana puts on as fine a show as there is, in my estimation. Best pure musicianship I have ever seen on stage - Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Is there anyone better at their instrument than Bela? Any answer would have to be an all-time virtuoso.

August 1990 Alpine Valles, WILineup was Fabulous Thunderbirds, Robert Cray, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Crazy Leslie and I had tickets for the show, but almost didn't go, as we were dreadfully hung over from the night before (don't remember what we did, but doesn't really matter-was something really eventful and fun at the time, for sure) but we decided to tough it out and go. Have rarely been so glad of a decision in my life. Show was HOT, is the only word for it. Encore of Stevie Ray's set included all of the above, plus Buddy Guy flew in in a helicopter, to join the other guitar greats on stage. Was a rockin' "Sweet Home Chicago" that went on forever. Guys were having soo much fun taking over lead guitar and playing with each other. Was breathtaking. Especially that song for 2 Chicago gals! Leslie and I both were cured of our hangovers long before the encore, and were thanking our lucky stars on the way home that we went. Next day she called me at work and said "Dude, was a crash after the show." For a while we thought that Clapton had died too, so were in telephone conference with each other for hours, with her listening to the radio, and me doing no work whatsoever. When we knew Stevie Ray had died, we were shocked and sorrowful. But as Leslie said "Couldn't have had a hotter grand finale for his life if he'd have tried." Was also 'bout the best non-Dead show I ever saw.

This band seemed lost after their guitarist Mikey Houser died. But since Jimmy Herring has joined, they are playing with a newfound energy. These shows are fun and the vibe is as close to the Dead as you'll find in today's touring acts. It's all about the lyrics, the jams, the drums, the smiles and the good times. I've seen a few shows this year, but the Friday night, April 27 show at Orange Beach, Alabama is the best live show I've seen since Jerry existed. Yes, I felt a little old, but I still had a blast. Check them out in a town near you.

MusicRx- Dregs... yeah... I saw 'em once in college '78 or '79... Steve Morse is THE most underrated g-man in music IMHO... Also- the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. I've seen them twice, once in '80, once in '97. The Chicken Train ROCKS!

ELP in 78 or 79 in St. Louis was the best show I've ever been to, hands down. Others: Panic at 10KLakes, Zappa, Rare Earth, Robin Trower, Charlie Daniels Band at Kiel Opera House the night that Skynrd's plane went down, Jackson Browne, The Who w/KMoon, The Neville Brothers under the Arch and backed by FIREWORKS in St. Louis, JGB at Mississipi Nights, many Jake's Leg bar shows at Twenty North, couple Santanas, Metheny, and on Worst show: A KSHE triple bill topped by All Bros when they were all totally downered out; the songs went on and on and on with 20 minutes of "whhhaaaaooommmmmm........whooooommmmm" stuff at the end of every song.

In the late 90s. I went to two of the 5 night run. I got a wave from Ringo who was in the balcony (next to Joni Mitchell). They were both incredible. Also a couple of Allman Bros. shows in teh early 90s at The Santa Barbara County Bowl. One with Little Feat, one with Blues Traveler. Both outstanding shows. Many others. Many great Jerry and Bobby shows. And General Public has been great. Some Who shows are at the top. I could go on.

Went to an amazing ZPZ show at Meadowbrook Music Theatre 7/27. Simply the best band with the best musicians playing the best music now. If they are playing in your town I would highly recomend seeing them if you're on the fence. Those not on the fence are likely going.

Spacebrother and others. I saw Zappa Plays Zappa at 10,000 Lakes Festival on July 19. My brother and I got there early and heard the music of Zappa and I almost ran to the front of the stage for the soundcheck which we were lucky enough to see with only several hundred Zappa Freaks who knew what was going on by recognizing the music. I got a body rush just being there, I know that it was the most excited I was the whole festival. I was like a kid at a candy store and had a big goofy grin. . Then several hours later we got to see the show. These folks are amazing musicians. It brought back memories of one of the best other shows I have ever seen - Frank Zappa - Mothers of Invention with Adrian Belew in Iowa City in 77 or 78. Do not miss this band. Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Walt Whitman-Song of Myself

I saw Prince in the summer of 2004. He had Maceo Parker and the best drummer I have ever seen in his band (John Blackwell). It was three hours of non-stop music including a long solo acoustic set. He is an amazing guitar player and played it a lot that night. I also love seeing Pearl Jam. Last summer in Philly was really good. The Hold Steady are my new favorite, they put on a great show and have the best lyrics I've heard in years. I was lucky enough to catch on of the three Radiohead "Kid A" North American shows (Toronto). It was one of the best and rawest shows I have ever seen. It was very gritty and just amazing. Other great bands I love to see: Depeche Mode, Pixies, Donovan, Mercury Rev, Beck.......

12/29-31/97 - Great American Music Hall, SF: Incredible 3 show run. My friends and I were welcome backstage throughout the run thanks to sound dude Steve Young who we met during the Vinyl show on 12/28. The band I was used to hearing talk and joke throughout shows, including during songs, just put their collective heads down and wailed. 11/6/01 Madison Theater - Peoria, IL: CD release party for Warts and All vol. 1. Do yourself a favor, go to archive.org and stream Waiting For the Punchline right now. I've seen a ton of shows but it was during this song that for the first and only time ever I thought a band might actually tear the roof off a place. Also, just saw Hank III last saturday. If your musical tastes include both country and all that metal rock theater can offer go see that kid. 11/6/01 Madison Theater - Peoria, IL It was the CD release party for

Never been to one of their shows that did not absolutely floor me. Amazing dynamics from teeth-gnashing screamingly sick feedback to beautiful quiet pin-drop whispered ballads. Who else can get the Arkestra to sit in with them?? http://www.thebughunters.com
