    February 16 - February 22, 2015

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll cover a dozen years in Grateful Dead history, with music from 1973, 1977 and 1985.

Our first selection is music from the final night of a three night run at the Universal Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA, on 7/1/73, a really solid batch of shows to rap up a short west coast tour of Vancouver, Portland and Seattle, as well as these LA shows. The Dead would take the rest of July off to work on Wake Of The Flood, but heading east for the massive Watkins Glen shows at the end of the month with The Band and the Allman Bros. Band. From the 7/1/73 show, we have El Paso ; Loose Lucy ; Truckin' > Drums > The Other One > Wharf Rat > Me And Bobby McGee; Casey Jones.

From four years later, we have the start of the show on 5/4/77, the final night of a five night run at the Palladium in New York City on the exceptional Spring Tour of 1977. The Palladium had previously been known as the Academy Of Music, where the Dead had played a seven night run in 1972 just before Europe. From 5/4/77 we have Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Big River ; They Love Each Other ; New Minglewood Blues ; It Must Have Been The Roses.

Our final selection this week is the start of the second set from 6/22/85 at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin, where we have Keep On Growing > Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance. This was the start of the short, but excellent, Summer Tour of 1985, with shows on either of the tour in California (the Greek in Berkeley before, Ventura after).

Be sure to stop by next week for more tunes from the vault.

I am with you Jim! The playing into Comes a Time jam is perhaps the most impressive improvisation of the year, lovely, lovely stuff!

    older taper section streams
Thanks for finding that 5/4/09 one, but am I the only one unable to play the older taper sections? At a certain point, there must have been a switch in the player used or something, and the fly player comes up, but it just will not play. I'm using a (4 year old) macbook pro. Any suggestions for a player or something to download that might work better are appreciated, or at least confirmation that the problem is on my end rather than dead.net. Thanks! and yeah the sound is a bit muddy for the 5/4/77, but it's nice, and I'd like to hear more of it!

So, they DO have something from early May '77 after all. This year's box set could turn out to be a very pleasant surprise!

Possibly my very favourite 2nd set on the May tour -- fits on a single CD, which is very convenient. Sound on these 1st set numbers makes me think a full release very unlikely. BUT 5/4/77 would make a nice bonus disc somewhere :)

5-4-77 Terrapin Station>Playing In The Band>Comes A Time>Playing In The Band I was @ this show & easily my fav from the tour ...it's underrated & the above segment contains some of the most mind blowing & creative liquid improvisation you could hope the GD would play! ps. could someone tell me exactly what date did the above originally air on the tapers section??

The sound on 5/4/77 is a little rough to start with, and there's a splice too. But it settles down very nicely and starts sounding very good. This show's performance far outweighs some minor tape difficulties at the start of the first set. So let's release this show and about 10 others from this tour in a couple months :)
