    Halloween!!

I was 15, my brother 18….couldn’t believe they did Halloween in Columbia, SC of all places. Cool, but a bit of an odd show. And seemed really short. Damn that place was steep! Pumpkins were cool and Dan Healy was doing weird stuff through the PA. Still have the stub!

    First show

Buddies were driving down from NC and had a ticket for me. We had a hotel room walking distance and a bunch of doses. So it wasn't just my first Dead show, it was my first trip. At the time, I didn't know the routine so I didn't miss the parking lot scene as we routed our way through the rainy streets. We were lost immediately, even though it was a three block walk. Space/Werewolves blew me away and then the acid blew me away. (Took a second hit during Werewolves.) It's a little foggy from there. After the show, we eventually made it back to the hotel room. A buddy had bought a t-shirt and I spent a couple of hours (or maybe 15 minutes) sitting on the floor looking into the full length mirror. Every time I pulled the shirt over my head, I was back in the show and the Dead would be in the middle of Not Fade Away. When I took the shirt off my head, I was back in the room. Shirt back on head, I was back at the show and the band played the exact next note of NFA. It was awesome and just a little unsettling. Somebody called a friend in Richmond and we hit the road around dawn because they had an empty suburban house and our room was total squalor.

We saw both shows in Richmond and missed the riot because we were inside already. I missed a midterm and failed German during this completely unplanned journey. I was already somewhat formed as a college sophomore. But the experience helped send me down a happy path that I still follow...

'I spent Halloween with the Dead'

Of course the only show of the tour I was going to that I didn't have a ticket for. So I had decided to make bumper stickers for my first & only Dead Halloween show. They were on fluorescent orange paper with black inked art and words that said, "I spent Halloween with the Dead" haha- how original. It was raining so my pre-plan to sell them in the lot was not happening, & I still needed a ticket! I decided to walk between the line of cars on the road outside the parking entrance waiting to get in. I was handing out my stickers through the car windows saying something like, "free bumper stickers, Happy Halloween!" then if they opened their window to get one I'd ask if they had an extra ticket. I was doing this for what seemed to be forever. It was hard to see, wet in my rain poncho & it was getting close to show time. A van pulled up, opened it's side door & as I got in to hand my stickers, they said my name!, closed the door & I was off, glad to be dry & blown away to see folks I knew all the way from Philly!! What's the chances they happen to see me then & pick me up? Oh- but the reality hit as we were driving closer to the arena, I didn't have a ticket! I said you guys don't happen to have an extra ticket do you? As they all turned to vibe a friend I didn't know, it seemed it was my lucky day.
And it didn't end there. "Funiculi Funicula"! That's a favorite of mine reintroduce from my italian youth & the movie 'Easy Money'. But wait there's more, this was the first show of all my dead head yrs that I called the opening song!
Of course it would be Werewolves of London, it was Halloween, my favorite holiday! & I was inside with my favorite band!!! xo

Werewolves! (Thought it was Sweet Home Alabama there when they first started cranking out the initial chord changes. Five-song second set, lots of space in the middle. Unusual.

We were looking forward to our first Halloween show for some time and when it rained, even though it was an indoor show we were somewhat bummed because it put a damper on the lot scene. The Space intro into Warewolves Music was some of the best Dead I had ever seen. Something happened and it was like the the light switch was just flipped off. The rest of the show was downhill. This is the first 3 star rating I have given so far for my list. Just a sketchy performance. Still love 'em though. Dougles

Of all my many tapes, this is one show I come back to over and over again.... Sure, the highly unusal opening of a bonefide Space into Werewolves of London is electrifying. But it's the clean, clean playing of everyone throughout this show that needs commenting. Especially in the outstanding second set, this is apparent. My tape (and I wasn't at this show) is missing the Looks Like Rain and Might as Well; as well as the Ship of Fools. But each of the other four tunes are played to perfection, folks. In the first set, The Music Never Stopped is noteworthy, but it's the West LA Fadeaway that is the true standout- the best version I've ever heard. So, those of you fond of '85 shows, this here is one show to track down, if you don't already have in your collection. ps: the intro into the jam following Playin' is incredible (as is the entire jam, naturally), and the solo in Not Fade Away is one of the finest you'll ever hear...

Well, after much begging from my DeadHead buddies,we stuffed into my VW Rabbit, and made the "trip" from Charlotte NC to Columbia for a Halloween that changed my life! I had heard alot of tales from my Head friends, but,as many of you folks know, nothing could totally prepair me for the culture shock that awaited me as I entered the doors of The Columbia Col.!! The first person to greet me after going thru the turn-stiles was a sweaty,red-faced guy who got right in my face and blew a bugle with all his might, and then laughed loudly (eyes bugging half way out of his head). I knew I was in for quite the evening after that.-AND I WAS!!-Lots of wild costumes. Two huge Jack-o-lanterns on either side of the stage. The lights went down, and they went into a strange "Space", into Werewolves. Of course once the music started,I got my first look at the sight that (I think) makes quite the impression on all "newbees" THE DANCE!!! The twirling, wiggling flowing motion. At first all I could do was laugh and laugh. It was like I had found my own "special" group of like-minded friends. Although I did not know all the songs yet,I really liked the music.Looks Like Rain, and Tenn.Jed really made an impression on me in the first set.The second set opened with a fun Shakedown into Playing.I was hooked!! I remember two or three guys who had a bucket of Glow Paint running all over the arena slinging the glowing liquid on everyone and everything they could! Great fun, great friends, and "grate"music.-I had to see them as quickly as possible to make sure that I hadn't dreamed this! Two days later I was in Richmond (with no tickets) to seek more of what I had experenced in Columbia.Richmond turned out to be my only "miracle show". But that's another story!! :)

Bob said after Music. Still one of the best Music's ever.Who knew the show would take the gaspipe like that? Weird. Typical. When the going gets weird.... well you know the rest. RIP Mr Thompson I still have the Set I analog. “The Omnipotent Grateful Dead!”

My only trip to S. Carolina!I had never seen it rain as much as it did. Hurricane whatever broke up over Florida and headed north along the East coast. Wow, and everybody was really dosed heavily... Or was it just me. One of the more stranger shows that I had seen. I love the LLRain with all the echos. Overall a really good weird show!

I was turned on to The Dead a year before (shortly after my 14th birthday in Sept. 84'), but my parents wouldn't let me go to a concert. When some friends of mine were going to the Summer 85' Merriweather Post Pavillion shows, I begged and begged and begged to go... no deal. lol As a 15th birthday present, they bought me tickets to this show and 11/2/85 Richmond.

This campus show had many first timers, who were stunned at the Space opener, wondering why the Deadheads were going nuts and "would the whole show be like this? Uh-oh." This show was fit really nicely with my energy and attitude and I was flying high. One note is that drums was two solos, first Billy, then he left and Mickey had the stage. Nice jam out of the drims solos, rather than Space (which they already played, remember).

I remember the pumpkins on both sides of the stage. I saw someone running down the street with one after the show. We were so dosed my friend tried to jump into a police car. I think we scared him. then the riots the next show

It wasn't the best show but it sure was fun. Our UNC Deadhead group chartered 3 buses from Chapel Hill, so about 120 of us Tarheels invaded the other Carolina for the Halloween feast of the Dead. The show started off great but after the Music Never Stopped, the Music stopped. The energy somehow got sucked out of the band. The second set was short and not that inspiring. It was a little bit of a letdown especially after the hot start of the show..

I converged with 3 old friends and a hefty sack of dried fungi (more old friends) for this Halloween party. The opening of "Space /Werewolves combined with the visuals of the lights and jack-o-lanterns sent thingsu to another level.3 of us goblins melted into our nosebleed seats, unable to move a muscle (or wanting to), being one with the tunes while one werewolf prowled the Coliseum the entire show, only to appear when the lights came up. No complaints on the first set but things did appear to fade as the night went on.

Looking back this show was a let down having never played in South Carolina I thought for sure we were getting a blow the roof off the joint type of show. Many times when it was either a long ride or new building/state they would SMOKE the joint. ie Boise ,Lake Placid, Lewiston Maine ... And many more. Not this night though. Ya WAREWOLVES after all these years but still I think they could of dug deeper on this night. Trust me when I say I have no complaint though was still a fun show and the tour itself was one for the ages. Might be most fun I ever had on a tour. The group I hung with every show made it all of these shows from Summer tour on we were all in every night.

wow - mind-bending space before the first song, and Werewolves was a hoot. Space reared its head all night - in West LA and Playin', and then a legit "Dr. Evil", ominous-sounding piece after drums that resolved into transcendent Mr Fantasy. Great night for Brent.
