Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll tune in to a double dose of Grateful Dead music from the Spring Tour of 1978, with a bit of 1984 mixed in.

Our first stop this week is on 4/19/78 in Columbus, OH, where we have the start of the second set, featuring Samson And Delilah, It Must Have Been The Roses, Estimated Prophet > He's Gone>Rhythm Devils. It was at this show where the Dead would debut Werewolves of London at the end of the show.

From the next show, on 4/21/78 in Lexington, KY, we have the end of the show, including the second straight performance of the aforementioned Warren Zevon song as the first encore. From Lexington, we have Rhythm Devils> Jam > Stella Blue, Truckin' > Playing In The Band, Werewolves Of London, U.S. Blues.

Lastly this week, from the end of the show on 4/14/84 in Hampton, VA, we have Morning Dew > Throwing Stones > One More Saturday Night, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

4.19.78 Columbus bit,, Samson And Delilah ; It Must Have Been The Roses ; Estimated Prophet > He's Gone and the 1st set, which is not featured has such a good flow. 1st Set, Check it out people 4.19.78 !! I heard both 2nd set portions from 4.19 & 4.21.78, on Sirius the last couple of days. Plus 5.17.78 is going right now. (1st "Mississippi Half-Step > Franklin's Tower") a couple other nuggets I like from 5.17.78 - It Must Have Been the Roses Looks Like Rain Tennessee Jed Tuning ; Lazy Lightning > Supplication are killer. And a 2nd set funky jam out in Not Fade Away delivered right on time

....from some hit-and-miss tours. Love the drums into Stella Blue, which is still being played like they meant it! The Hampton Dew > Throwing Stones made me think of the strongest version of this segway that I at least ever saw, the first Saratoga Show. Cheers to all!

THANK YOU DL2! THANK YOU DL2! THANK YOU DL2! I've not heard the second encore to 4.21.78 since it was played . . . if its out there, I've never found it. I attended it and obtained an audience tape fairly soon afterwards. The opening Promised Land was cut at front as the Boys+Girl started on time which was a shock. The Dire had an awful cut. No one I knew got the second encore, US Blues, because who expected a second encore in Lexington, KY with an arena only about 1/5 full. Rupp Arena - the home of the University of Kentucky basketball team - used to sell the entire venue for all rock shows . . . about 26,000 souls. According to my eyes, and Latvala confirmed it when he was still alive to me, they only had about 5000 in the audience. Lexington was, and still is, very much a country town vis a vis big acts and many rock shows didn't sell out or were less than robustly attended (Neil Young's "Rust Never Sleeps" Tour; The Who; Jethro Tull; KISS; Eagles; Fleetwood Mac; ELO; were all late 70s shows that didn't sell out - though all did far better than the Dead in 78). What I remember most about the show - besides the stage banter antics from Set 1 - was the achingly lovely Stella, and the Werewolves encore. For you young'uns, this was pre-internet, pre-email, pre anything! The large number of folks "touring" like they did starting in the late 80s was pretty rare, so show "facts" . . . particularly for us in the middle or south of the country . . . weren't broadcast or readily available. Warren Zevon had scored big with this tune and it was an FM staple at the time. To hear the Dead do it was hilarious . . . Donna and Jerry's Werewolf "ooooing" was almost too much to bear at the end of the trip! Anyway, we local Heads have always been proud that the Stella Blue warranted inclusion on the first box set . . . So Many Roads. As I hope others hear and agree, the balance of the second set (No Samson, Ship of Fools, Playing here, but worth a listen on archive.net) I've always thought was spectacular. Interesting jam, fragile Stella, red hot Truckin, and not one but TWO good encores. RELEASE IT!!!! (or, at least, mail me a nice SDBD!). Thanks again DL2! The US Blues is as fine as I remember it! Sorry I'll miss you in Chicago, but will always remember our visit in Alpine for the Reunion - hope you can still fit in that Bleacher Bums shirt I gave you. DCFHOF . . . it's time. Kentucky Scott
