Impressive 1st set playin'. Summer tour w/ my old friend Jeff S.

Before the days of the 'managed' buzz.........

That Friend of the Devil was sublime. I have not heard this in a long time but I recall FOTD being extra long or maybe Brent took an extra solo (or maybe they just messed it up) but it was great music on a summer night.

This was a cool show on a great day. 1st set opener was really cool. Saw the NJ shows on this tour. All were good, none outstanding.

First of 5 straight this tour. Would rate it higher but the Woodstocks hit a little hard that day. 1st Eyes too, oh well. They got better though!

This was always a fun venue. A little Hellatious getting in, but camping on that dirt lot, for some reason, was fun. The shows here were always well played. A fun stop on the tour!

I scored a laminate in the parking lot.It got me in 6 nights on that run & 3 of my friends the rest of the run including Cal Expo.

opening night on your east coast summer tour.this was a grate show only show i saw this summer to lay me down was sweet fotd to open the second set with brents violin fills beautiful very nice tenn jed we can run was grate cassidy was rippin to end the set you guys who didnt like this show must see way to many shows to be so picky this was a grate show truckin hes gone crazy fingers playin to open the first set also dint eddie brikell open thie year? or was that 90? this was the best day i had all year! except for seeing jgb in oldorchard beach with bob and rob acoustic to open the show and clarence clemmons on the sax setting in with jerry band all night!!!................aiko aiko

i remember that it was africa hot outside until the sun went down

This was my first Dead show. So, you know all the usual stuff that goes along with that. I had a great time. It was a fun day. That Africa-hot comment is surely true. That crappy old stadium was really a crappy old place to see a concert, but the sound was good, and it was always better to experience the Dead outdoors. Was one of the best setlists I ever witnessed. Pretty good for someone's first show, don't you think? It turned out to be one of the best Dead shows I ever saw....setlist & performance-wise.

DKNJ: Nice Show, FOTD was of a quicker tempo. I remember Jerry saying "How yall doin?" before the opener. It took about nine years to get into the lot due to the total lack of roadway infrastructure around that dump.

They rocked. Never was a big fan of Brent but he played his ass off that day. They were tuning up for the 1st song and I said to my buddy, "They can't possibly open with Playing in the Band - right?" And then they did. A hot opener to a hot day. Never saw To Lay Me Down before or since, so that was great. Uncle John's Band was red hot. A great summer show....

In no particular order, here is what I vividly remember from that show. (granted, I speak about his with all of my fellow heads who went with me or I met there) Way hot outside (maybe 100) Drove up from NJ with a Beer Ball tapped in a car (yikes) Concrete Jungle (trouble getting tent set up in the parking lot) Woodstocks (Must have ~ If you were there, then u know) Huge Drum Circle (largest I may have ever seen ~no seriously) Sunrise My Best friends first Dead experience (EVER) Blueberry Pancakes Traded my extra Buffalo for a Foxboro (it ryhmes I swear ~ try singing and skipping while saying it) Hot, No Shade and No Water Green Haze (ok, maybe it was just me) Gate crashers. crushing the porta- johns First set Playin in the Band (opened the show with it) Tennessee Jed (and My friend *1st show yelling Jerrys solo reminded him of spreading butter on bread (could be?) Our only gallon of water in the show was dosed (very much so) Did I say It was WAY HOT too The young girl next to us, grabbing our water without asking and taking a huge swig. (she hurled in about 20 minutes) I swear I remember this ~ Vividly I remember trying to get out of the parking lot after the show, not moving at all and buying a Gin and Tonic, falling asleep, then a good friend of mine, Mark, Banging on my window, hours later (I think) scaring me to death.(still in the lot) Driving home ~ saying I should not be driving home ~ Swerving off the road 1 or 2 times. Rushing home to get my best friend to court that morning (yikes) He made it and we look back on that show and weekend as one of the highlights of our lives. REALLY. Two nights later on a special Fourth of July edition of 'Nightline,' an acoustic performance of Jerry and Bob playing 'This Land Is You Land' with members of Los Lobos aired. It was shot in the parking lot of Sullivan Stadium, out by the busses, with little divider thingies set up to help keep them from attracting a crowd I imagine. I recall nervous roadies in the background looking beyond the partitions to see if in fact the guys banging out this tune was drawing curious folks in or not. Bob and Jerry and at least one member of Los Lobos took turns singing the verses. Good, good stuff.

This is the where I fell in love w/ the song "CASSIDY".Beautiful lyric,melody+title.I was only 19 at this show,but that song always stuck w/me(Got it a few more times over the years)Now I have perfect boy/girl twins:Robbie+(You guessed it)Cassidy!God Bless Grateful Dead.

This was my first (and sadly) only show. It was so HOT! The show and the temps - I remember wet t-shirts and tripping out on the sun setting over the stadium. Awesome experience all around - music, friends and Los Lobos was good too. Amen.

HOT!!! PREGNANT!!! And not paying attention-much!

My buddy and I fixed up his microbus and tripped up and down the East Coast going to every show, which even included the Fall tour in October. It was cool that we were out of PA at the time and that we worked in a bar with a bunch of other deadheads so we could work in between some of the shows.This was a great tour!

i was at this show and what A GREAT SHOW IT WAS. BEING IN THE FIRST 1 SHOWS I SAW AND THE GOODIES I INGESTED EARLIER MYSELF AND A FEW FRIENDS I WAS WITH thought we had missed the first set until about tenn jed. now the 1st set opener playin>crazy fingers>wang-dang-doodle was truly amazing and will never forget it. you see last time played in dead base among other places such as here but you never see anything about that nd set FOTD opener. i think the last set FOTD might have been as far back as 78' any comments by anyone else would be great. either post comment or send me a personal message. my hard cove dead base has been in an out of town friends possesion for a while now so i guess i can research myself via internet.

edit of 1st comment. i was at this show and what a great show it was. being one of my 1st 10 shows and after the goodies me and my friends ingested. after the opening playin>crazy fingers>wang dang doodle we thought we had missed the 1st set untill about tenn jed when things slowed down a lttle. now as great as that opening trio was you read about the last 1st set versions of these songs in dead base and others such as this site. but you never hear anything about that 2nd set FOTD opener. i have to research a little more but i might even go back as far as 78' or 79' as last set2 version of this song. any comments out there? either post it or send me a personal message please. thanks and keep up the good wok deadnet and fans everywhere

Two things about this show. that FOTD to start the 2nd set was the best I'd ever heard. yes, an extra jam segment in the middle and seeing Jerry's face on the big screen smiling as he sang on a gorgeous summer evening has been ingrained in my mind ever since. I can listen to that tape (or mp3 now) and it takes me back to that night. the other was after He's Gone when Jerry decided he wasn't quite ready to turn it over to the drummers and started playing Eyes. Weir had to literally run back out and start playing and no one could hear Jerry singing the first verse because Healy had already turned down his mike. We were cracking up!

This was my very first concert ever, I was 16 and what a great experience & show it was!!! It was soooooooooo hot that day the sweat was pouring off us but what a show it was. I am so GRATEFULthat I got to see the DEAD prior to Brents death a year later and Garcia's in 95. I went to this show with my boyfriend who also died in 1990 so this day will live on forever as one of my best memories!!!! Forever a Fan

First show, hopped a wall to get on the floor at the start of the show. Spent the show 30 feet from Brent. The Fantasy Jude was amazing... everyone singing na-na-na-na-Na-Na-Na-Nah at the top of their lungs... Never forget it.Oh, and it was hot as hell that day (as someone mentioned). Some girl got heat stroke and passed out in front of me and my buddies -- we had to carry her out to the ushers. Everyone was really cool and we just slid back into our primo spot on the floor.

It was an amazing show. And I remember walking around that dusty parking lot absolutely blown away, realizing that I was "home".

I flew up from Florida for the first two shows of this tour to spend some time with my friends Mark Way and Tom Rigby. Although the Rich Stadium show two days later was good, this show was exceptional with 1st and 2nd set opening rarities that were as good live as they read on paper. One thing that remains in my mind to this day about this show was the support the Band gave Brent while he sang 'We Can Run But We Can't Hide'. I could tell how much they loved him. History has shown that Brent had demons that apparently were insurmountable. I was devastated when I heard of his passing and, for me, the Band was never the same after it. I love all of you and I'll see you in Santa Clara.

The event will showcase a previously unreleased Grateful Dead Concert from Sullivan Stadium, Foxboro, MA on July 2nd, 1989; the tour-opening show from what would be one of the Dead's best tours of their final 15 years performing. In addition to the full show, Dead & Co will show footage from the fall tour, behind the scenes & interviews leading up to the summer tour. The meet-up happens Wednesday, May 11, 2016 @ 7:00pm.
