A couple of images this show conjures are Brent sharing his piano with Bruce (the two of them smiling next to each other on the stool), and the Dire Wolf guitar appearing out of Space for I Need a Miracle. I was a little disappointed it didn't seem as meaty as I'd imagined, but really cool to see. Brent seemed a little "distracted" during the first set, singing a rueful Far From Me (the only one I ever saw) and initially starting his Friend of the Devil solo with the wrong effect clearly/jarringly queued up...hastily rectified, though, as I recall. I'll have to listen to this clip and see how well it matches up to memory! This was only the second, and last, Friend of the Devil I ever saw. Not exactly a rarity, but not the easiest song to catch, either, in the 80's. And yes, Dave, it was overcast and muggy. I had to miss the next day because of my final college final. Darn summer school! Tickets were, atypically by then, easy to come by ~ they put some more on sale at the box office that day, and they were cool ones, even: orange, with a dancing skeleton screened on.

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1972, 1981 and 1989.

First up this week is music from 7/16/72 at Dillon Stadium in Hartford, CT, featuring Deal ; Mexicali Blues, Stella Blue, Beat It On Down The Line, Cumberland Blues. This is the first Grateful Dead show since Pigpen left the band after the 6/17/72 show at the Hollywood Bowl; the beginning of a new era of Dead. This is the second live version of Stella Blue, which had been debuted the previous month in Hollywood. If you get a chance, I encourage you to listen to that Hollywood debut of Stella Blue, which features a very beautiful organ line by Pigpen, the only time the song would ever feature that instrumental part. It's a remarkably strong debut for Stella Blue.

Next is music from the strong summer tour of 1981, from7/8/81 in St. Louis, featuring the start of the first set: Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Feel Like A Stranger ; Peggy-O > Little Red Rooster.

Lastly this week is the entire first set from7/12/89 at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC, featuring Touch Of Grey ; New Minglewood Blues ; Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo ; Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues ; Far From Me ; Cassidy ; Friend Of The Devil ; The Promised Land. This would mark the first year of seven consecutive years the Dead would play RFK. I remember it was very humid and overcast at both of these 1989 shows.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

This is weird, I've been away from tapers section for 9 months. November thing brought me back. I hope you know how it goes, work, kids, family, more work.. And a show I was at is one of the three shows...weird..Anyway some thoughts. I took my friend Tommy to his first show. And they played Tom Thumb. I was thinking "how do they do this?" Another thing, at the show I'm thinking this is alright...Sounds the same..Now listening back 25 years later it is smokin'. I am going back to the archive to refresh my memory. Second set Sugaree, Saw the Buckeye Fake 88 with Hornsby, another Sugaree, I was thinking is this the only Dead song dude knows? I know....Anyway, this was enough weirdness I had to comment. 1/2 step, minglewood sounds killer. Thanx

I was thinking the same thing. I've never heard anything other than an AUD for that one.
