Hey kids just signed up on here. I'm from Ny just moved to san Francisco. If any awsome people want to help me find my way around this City don't hesistate to let me know! See you all at the furthur shows at the fox!!!!!

I was just racking my brain trying to recall all the shows I've been to, perusing the shows lists. What a walk down memory lane! I finally know how many shows I've been to! 27. It was hard remembering all of them hehehehe. Life changing show? I dunno. My first show was at the Forum in LA in 1989. But I think the most memorable shows were the Cal Expo shows in June of 1990 where myself and two friends backpacked to San Francisco, walking around Haight/Ashbury and happening upon, a house with 710 on it. It was the one on Ashbury St.. We weren't looking for it but my friend kinda had a "hey?, isn't that....?" moment. And no, we didn't knock on the door! From there we went to Sacramento and camped out at the Cal Expo shows. Now, THAT was freakin' fun! Since then I've played in a band, came out, and just have been keepin' on keeping on. Thank goodness for the Sirius Grateful Dead channel! Now for fun, I'm flying planes and singing in a choir. Was born in San Francisco and moved to Phoenix when I was 5, so basically a brown on both sides Phoenician. Grandparents lived in Marinwood and I've visted SF many many times. I was looking for a good copy of the 5-17-77 show which I heard on Sirius but can only find streaming/bad recordings on the internet archive.org. Where's the best place to download shows?

Hi everyone, I'm brand new to The Grateful Dead, I DO NOT OWN A SINGLE RECORDING OF THEM!! I've been into Phish for a number of years, (and am excited by the rumours of them coming to the UK next year) have a large collection of Live Shows and all of the studio albums. But I keep reading how they are pretenders to the thrown and that The Dead were the Kings. So, where do I start? Which studio album is best for the uninitiated, which Soundboard should I start with? All advice will be gratefully received.

Workingmans Dead or American Beauty maybe, but I'd go for something recorded live, try Dick's Picks, I'd recomend Englishtown,1977. The bus came by and I got on That's when it all began

Hi! I am working on research for a film about DIY music venues, and in the process have stumbled across accounts of the Dead's 1967 "Great Northern Tour." I have read that this was one of the first instances of a major band financing an entire tour themselves. I do not know much more than this, or am I very knowledgeable about the Dead but I thought someone here might be able to answer some questions and shed some light on the history. This is a boring and long-winded post, apologies in advance :) My name's Lee - I'm a 29 year old British guy living in Colombia, although I'm about to embark on a around-the-world-overland-trip (seriously!), starting and finishing in Patagonia, Argentina. This is thanks to my grandmother (RIP), without whose inheritance such a thing would never have been made possible. When I was a teenager (90s), I played the guitar* and was into the rock-music-styles of the time - you know, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Chili Peppers - plus some of the older school stuff, Led Zep, etc... (*I still do, but now have a chronically inflamed middle finger, which limits my guitarring to slide blues with cigarette lighters - chords and scales are a thing of the past for me these days. But, I digress...) We had a friend called Howard, and he was *really* into The Dead. I mean *really*. His devotion was scary. All of us, myself included, were awed, mystified and intimidated by his devotion to this band. We never listened to the Dead, probably simply out of fear that we would become like him. Listening to the GD, for us at the time, seemed like a dangerous slope that, once embarked upon, one might never be able to climb up again. Howard would sometimes break out of a conversation he was in the middle of in order to listen to a GD song that suddenly came into his head; sometimes, he would close his eyes and rock his head to a GD song that he was simply singing along to mentally, he didn't need a walkman/discman (as portable music was back in those days). Howard was nuts for the Grateful Dead. I avoided them as if they were heroin. The Dead represented a scary alternate dimension, one which I left well-the-fuck-alone. For 10 years, I forgot about them. Then, while planning for my trip, I bought an iPod with 120GB storage. I started downloading discographies of anyone and everyone, and (almost as an afterthought) included a Dead discography in my shotgun-blast-of-bittorrent-discographies-to-download-because-why-the-hell-not. It wasn't *every* Dead album, naturally - but it was a collection of the studio albums plus a handful of live sets. That Grateful Dead discography sat ignored on my hard drive for about a week. Then, idly, I clicked on the "Aoxomoxoa" folder. From the first few notes of "St. Stephen", I knew I was in trouble. Big trouble. I felt like Howard. It *rocked*. I fell in love instantly. In a wild frenzy, I started clicking randomly on songs/albums just to see if everything was as good as Aoxomoxoa. I discovered "Black Peter" (on an album titled "History of the Grateful Dead"), then the next track: "Smokestack Lightnin'" - a cover which is actually *better* than the original (which doesn't happen often, I'm a big Howlin' fan). In fact, I'm listening to it right now. Wikipedia's biography of Jerry Garcia exacerbated my love for the band, and the plethora of live perfomances on Youtube was yet another distraction. I consider myself a little old and mature for cheesy hero-worship, but it's difficult not to be impressed by the life story of Jerry Garcia. "[Lee] has just discovered the Grateful Dead, and it is a life-changing, epiphanous event"... ...read my status update on Facebook - causing a couple of Facebook-acquiantances to respond... "Welcome...." (I paraphrase), "...you've got a lot of catching up to do...". Quite. GD fans/enthusiasts/addicts exist everywhere, so I have found. I tried to find a Dead song that I *didn't* like, just to see if there was one. I dutifully did ('Born Cross Eyed', Anthem of the Sun) - but it took me forever to find. The Dead have, for me, a greater "Good Song/Bad Song" ratio than any other band I know of. So why have I bothered to sign up here and puke out a semi-coherent stream-of-consciousness at a forum of people I don't know, about a band that I (really) know hardly anything about? I guess it's because I have to share it with someone - all of the above is a long-winded way of saying... "I just discovered The Dead, and it's really cool." Lee out :)

Just wanted to say hello to all and greetings from the great white north! Up here we like to jump out of (some say perfectly good) airplanes but this time of year it's a bit chilly at altitude so we have to find other things to fill our time. Pumpkin carving, for instance, can be fun and educational at times. I will post some photos of my jack-o-stealie if I can figure out how. Blue Skies!

just saying hi to all good folks out there--in here. I love the nutbox bit above. listening to grateful dawg right now, just finished Festival Express. I have to admit that I used to be foolish or maybe time wasn't right but it took me until summer `90 to allow myself to be dragged to a Dead show. Never mind I'd had chances or invites since around `85 before then I was a little familiar with some tunes. I had lived in the ''greater Chicagoland" and moved east to NC and moved back to Mn before I finally got on the Dead bus. I'd been on the trippy know ffor a while and when the two combined in that summer of the Rainbow Gathering in my back yard I was literally changed. My music taste slowly grew from one vine into a whole vineyard. All thanks to the Boys. Can't live in the past but damn I missed many great shows. That's why I keep on trying to incorporate music shows into any traveling. Keep on. maybe more later thanks, jeff

Online I go by onthebus91, which will tell you a little about me. I saw about 25 shows in the late 90's. I'm married with one kid here and one other kid from earlier. I'm a bookseller, lazy blogger/writer, and a horrible but persistent drummer. I drum while my kid, who has musical talent, plays guitar. I moved from Chicago to Dayton, then to Los Angeles, now to Houston. I'd love it if Phil & Bob brought the band down here, but who am I kidding right? My favorite books are Deadbase X, Hunter's Box of Rain, and some off the wall fiction like Christopher Moore or Jasper Fforde. I think I'll start a favorite books thread if there isn't... I am new here, and glad to be here...Been a big fan for a while now (only 30 but have loved The Dead for about 15+) I got off the bus for alittle bit when I met my wife but there is something about the music that just draws you back. I was a youth minister for 6 years & I'm trying to break into the professional music ministry racket right now. When I was going to my Christian college there were a bunch of Dead Heads that I partied with. After I graduated I'd still see them at shows, & now I'm still in contact w/ some of them on Facebook. As I said in another thread (that rhymes), I'm leading a praise band at a church right now & I'm trying to work some Dead-inspired improvisation into the mix. The other musicians aren't really familiar w/ Jerry & the gang, though, so it's a slow go (<=more rhyming). The church body I'm apart of is Missouri Synod Lutheran--ordinarily very conservative--but here in the NW district we've gained a reputation as synodical rebels. My personal religious views would probably make the average Christian cringe as I lean toward the mystical. I love delving into Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Sufism, & Native American religions as well as the desert fathers of Christianity & so-called heretics like Meister Eckhart. T'sol for now! Good to have you aboard. I, too, am a sort of renegade Christian who leans toward the mystical. Anything that is conducive to spirituality is alright with me. I was raised a Christian fundamentalist, spent most of my adult life in the Episcopal church and recently joined a very liberal congregation in the United Church of Christ. If you haven't discovered it already, check out the Religion, Spirituality and Deadheads forum. Anyway, good to have a fellow seeker on board. Peace.

Sup' I'm Colin but ya'll can just call me Fatty. I've been a Dead Head since my sixth grade year, that makes me 18 now. I was first introduced to the dead through my uncle. Who's been a Dead Head himself half his life. He has given me most of the GD albums I own, I think I have about 9 or 10 all together. But the reason why I love the dead is because they're such a great feel good band, and when I feel my worst they make me feel my best, and that's why I love them.

I am the dogwagen and live all over the US on the road but have a little hangout in Oregon for my collection of VW's and dogs. The wife takes care of all of that while I travel the US fixing and maintaining commercial wind turbines so we can stop relying on foreign oil and the conventional energy sources available also big fan of cycling all types single speed, road and XC mountain.I am 43 years young and refuse to grow up have been listening to the Dead for years and so miss Jerry but I will always have the music to lift me up.

Hey heyyy, I'm SteveI'm 22, been listenin' to the Dead since I was about 15 or 16. They've made an impact on my life in ways I can't even begin to describe. Some of my other favorite bands/musicians are Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Janis Joplin [Big Brother & the Holding Company], The Doors, Blue Cheer, Quicksilver Messanger Service, Jefferson Airplane, Sublime, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Muddy Waters, Rolling Stones, The Who, Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan.... I could go on and on, but for the most part I keep an open mind when it comes to music. I'll give anything a listen once, even if I have a feeling I won't like it. Gotta keep an open mind though. I live in Michigan and have my entire life, although I've traveled a bit, mostly east and south, I've never been west of the Mississippi, unfortunately, but this summer I'm lookin' to change that. I love traveling. I also love to read and draw, and especially writing. I write short stories in my free time. I like to watch films, but MUSIC and LITERATURE are my 2 absolute favorite things in life. I love to love, I'm positive and always try to see the best in people. I'm accepting of everyone, and I don't judge, cause lord knows I'm not one to pass judgment. I've taken dozens and dozens of drugs, and it's easier to ask me what I haven't done, then what I have done. Used to be out of control with it, but I've calmed down a lot. I'm an addict, and have lost a part of myself from harder drugs and liquor, but I feel there are parts of me that I thought were gone for good that are coming back slowly. In short, I love life! :) and the Grateful Dead embody everything I feel and think about life.

I'm 48y/o and have never owned a vehicle that didn't have Dead stickers. Come to think of it, all of my fishing boats have/had Dead stickers, too. My pets have all been named in relation to Dead tunes. I have mixxed feelings about the Dead these days. After reading a few of the tell-all books (Skully!) and considering the scene's craziness started in the 80's; huge shows, the overdosed and the young junkies, herion for sale, undercover cops who ignored the growing heroin presence and busted only the acid people, babies laying in the grass untended while mom and dad twirled in the dark, the smell of urine in the parking lots, etc. Brent and especially Jerry totally addicted and unhappy. Hmmmm......the dark side of the scene was pretty terrible. On a lighter note, I was never as happy as I was dancing at an outdoor summer show, especially Alpine and Deer Creek. If I had a bottle of how that felt I would drink most of it and give you the rest.

I live in NJ and currently I am attending Raritan Valley Community College for Liberal Arts and Math and I am really enjoying schooling. I saw the Grateful Dead four times and the Jerry Band twice. My first show I believe was the Jerry Band on Halloween night with Werewolved of London for the encore, not sure of the year though. I am interested in traveling and I just got in a huge fight with my dad and hence I plan to move out as soon as possible. So lots of interesting and exciting change going on in my life! I am on the road to good fortune, just have to stay the path and follow my instincts and heart. Ok, that was a much better intro lol. Look forward to hearing from you!

Vince here from Lancaster, Ohio.Currently on disability from several things. Severe sleep apnea, narcolepsy, diabetes II, degenerative back and knees. Working with Ohio Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation coming up. Will be training for some kind of computer job providing my new stimulant works. Found out that the Grateful Dead was still around in 1986. Found them at Buckeye Lake Music Center 1991 and went for five years to shows. Also went to Further '97 & '98. The Dead in 2003 and Rothbury July 4th, 2009. Would like to find a taper that has The Dead @ Rothbury 2009 and other shows. Have about 30 sets and or whole shows to trade but will have to find a someone 'round here to duplicate them for me. Maybe Barnaby. My real name is Mike, but I don't hear that much anymore, most just call me some variation of Funk, be it Funkatron, Funkadelic, Funkenstein.... I really don't mind which you land on... 24 years young, dead to core since the boys ripped my head open and turned me into a smiling mush at the P.N.C. shows in NJ in 2004.. Seen a fair share of live Dead and Phil shows, never any ratdog, no luck at the Furthur show couple months back, but mostly just love diggin into the archives that I'm so grateful have gotten taped so well. Without Jerry it's just not the same, kinda bums me out to go see the cover bands or constantly changing reinterpretations. Some tell me to get on that Ratdog wagon that its the best it's gonna get without J Dog but we'll just have to see. Never seeing the band when it was truly kickin, or even growing up with the music doesn't stop me from being true red white and blue space yo' face space cowboy. Moving back and forth through various parts of NY my whole life, I just moved down to St. Pete, Florida check out this southern sunshine vibe. Magnetic to good vibes, miracles stick to me like velcro, I'm a working man and in no way a flower child, a road dog, or a deadologist, but I know what I love and that's the sweet & changing sounds of the GD. Hello my name is Nathan, I am 16 years old and currently in the 11th grade. I work at Wegmans and live in upstate New York. I'm a new found lover of the Grateful Dead wanting to increase my knowledge on everything about the group. I started listening to them not too long ago and have been serisouly hooked. Obsessed. I came here to be apart of this great community, browsing the forums and gaining access to new information. I'm currently reading Rock Scully's "Living With The Dead" and also the "Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics" of which I both bought and really enjoy, while adding more Dead literature to my list.
