    Early winter '78
Hi Jeff: 1978 was a really good year for Dead shows. I was very impressed with the February concerts, overjoyed with 2 July shows at Redrocks, except for wrecking my truck driving back to Louisiana, then capturing a December 19th show in Jackson MS. I was disappointed in 1979, and for 11 years after, when the Godchaux's were gone.

    hey ted
Are you talking January-February '78 or December '78? I like them both, but I'm assuming you mean the earlier one...P.S. Nevermind I just saw the links, it just confirms my thought that December '78 is underappreciated. Even, though November 1978 is that much more underappreciated. Just how much do we hear from the 'Egypt with Love' tour?

    Fall '72
I sure enjoyed the late summer and fall of 1972: I was lucky to have seen 3 shows. To confirm David's evaluation, indeed, the band played consistently well. Personally, I favor the tour stops from February 1973 through October 1974 when Wake of the Flood and Mars Hotel tunes were performed. The jazzy jam in Eyes of the World was exquisite. In addition, the "Feeling Groovy" jam within the transition from China to Rider is outstanding. Moving on a few years, I really liked the winter tour of 1978 too. Thanks for the selections this week.

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we Grateful Dead music from 1972, 1978 and 1989.

Our first stop this week is a quartet of shorter songs from 12/11/72 at Winterland in San Francisco, where we have China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Ride, Box Of Rain ,He's Gone. This is from the tail end of what’s arguably considered the best Grateful Dead year in terms of consistency of great playing, from Europe to Veneta to the three legs of the Fall Tour to these shows at home, and a tremendious New Year’s Eve show to end the year.

Next is the first set from 2/1/78, the final night of a three night stand in Chicago, where we have this great batch of Dead music: Jack Straw ; Friend Of The Devil ; Mama Tried > Me And My Uncle ; Ramble On Rose ; Cassidy, Sugaree.

Lastly this week is the first set of the first show of another great year in Dead history, where we have this terrific batch of music from 2/5/89 at the henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, where we have Touch Of Grey ; Feel Like A Stranger > Franklin's Tower ; Little Red Rooster ; Althea ; We Can Run ; Desolation Row ; Don't Ease Me In. This was also the last-ever run of shows at the Kaiser.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

Glad the Tapers Section is up and running, hope you were not ill, David. I recently had a conversation with a number of Head friends about what songs, if any, we prefer the studio version of, over any live versions. In general folks thought a number of tunes off of American Beauty might fit the bill. For me Box of Rain is certainly one of them. This is no diss at all, for me the studio version is perfect, while live version all tend to have, well, "issues". The version here is a good one, but many are not, and not just vocally. Anyhow, I am curious if others want to chime in---are there tunes (and not "live" albums) that you think the studio version is, in some sense or other, the best?

I always thought Cosmic Charlie was never done as well live as on the album. I think I read that Garcia was never happy with the live version either.
