Grateful Dead

Very impressed with this Jimi Hendrix box. 3 cds crammed with amazing guitar playing - works in progress, jams, alternative ( alternative to what, I wonder?) takes - all of it essential.
I am not as keen on the documentary on the blu ray disc. Way too long, and apart from a few clips of Jimi live it's a bit boring. Like hearing some blokes talking about home improvements.
One thing that did interest me - the way they tell it on the documentary, live gigs during 1970 were seen by Hendrix as far less important than the work he was doing in the studio. Almost a necessary evil, to help pay for the studio work. I don't know if he saw it that way all the time - maybe he did.
Certainly some psychedelic albums were studio works of art in their own right, rather than just recordings of songs to be played live. After the first album, up to Blues For Allah, all the Dead's album were like that. Totally distinct and different sounding from the way they played live in their respective years. Although, unlike with Jimi Hendrix, they have always been perceived as inferior to their live sets.

Mention of Woodstock - my favourite live performance by Jimi Hendrix took place there on 17th of this month. Fascinating film. All those people wandering off while he was playing. I suppose after 3 days of peace and love they'd had enough, and just wanted to go home.

What a great story. You should share that with the guys at the Deadcast, they love to use stories like that. Their episodes on the Summer Magic shows have been outstanding, and they have included lots of tour stories (including a few from a guy I know who goes by the name DNA). I thought the episode on the Berkeley Greek shows really captured the feeling of those times, thanks to the stories contributed by concert goers. Like one guy talks about descending into the pit in front of the stage and feeling like he'd entered some sort of hive mind where everybody was moving together like a flock of birds. Yep.
TTB is so great at doing covers that I'm almost worried that they're ignoring some great original material. I don't think there's an another band out there that could cover Sly the way they do, or the Mad Dogs and Englishman. Lately they're doing Lovin Cup>Leavin Trunk and I don't see how it could be any better. But there's so many good songs, especially from the I am the Moon albums, that seem to have been shelved lately. Gravity, Aint that Somethin, Soul Sweet Song. I spose they will cycle those back in at some point.
Right now I'm listening to a bunch Dave Holland. Went down the jazz hole and remember how much I like the quintet stuff from around 2000, especially Prime Directive. Great writing, great playing. Best. Bass. Tone, Ever.

Woodstock 1969 Recordings? Listening to this full weekend of Woodstock it would seem that in it's entirety every second was recorded(announcements and other stuff) on what sounds like cassettes from the ambient microphones, and only a sbd + Ambient microphones were used when reel to reel was recording so they have patches for the reel changes. Patches aren't the best sounding, but you get the full experience of being there!

Lots 'o teases in the TTB sets. RR one night Derek quoted Power to Soul into Machine Gun (Jimi, natch), full-on Dreams (Gabe Dixon does a nice job, but Gregg can never be replaced and I heard him sing that so many times).

1stShow -- excellent story. I'll have to go back and listen again. I caught every show the GD played at RR but you know, all the years combine, and they melt into a dream...
