    February 13 - February 19, 2017

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have music from 1978, 1979, and 1991, three distinct periods in Grateful Dead history as defined by three different keyboards players.

From 5/7/78 in Troy, NY, toward the end of Keith and Donna’s time with the Grateful Dead, we have the end of the show, featuring Iko Iko > The Other One > Black Peter > Around And Around, US Blues.

From exactly one year later, on 5/7/79 in Easton, PA, we have the end of the second set, featuring the tail end of Not Fade Away> Black Peter> Around And Around. This was from Brent’s first tour with the Dead, and if you listen closely, you can hear a bit from a third guitarist, John Cipollina.

Lastly this week, from 5/5/91 at Cal Expo, featuring Vince on keyboards, we have the start of the second set, featuring Eyes Of The World >Man Smart (Woman Smarter) ; Ship Of Fools ; Truckin' >Terrapin Station.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

    Speaking of '91
Just listened to the Tapers Section Lemiuex posted from 5/91 and there is a wonderful Eyes of the World. Vince's synths add great atmosphere without the intrusiveness that Brent's plinks usually left on top of the mix, and the absence of Brent's vocals really makes all of the difference (compare to 30 Trips 1988). In fact, Vince's synths sound more like Brent's from '80 / '81, which were nice, and sat well in the mix. Jerry is also sounding better in this '91 performance. If you're not into Brent, but want to hear some good Dead, check it out. There is also a Truckin' and Terrapin in there.

    91, Cipollina, quicksilver
Good post spacebrother, I agree, 91 was a great year, loved the Bruce and Vince shows. Those final shows for Halloween 91 were off the hook, with Gary Duncan from Quicksilver and Carlos Santana, they need released. Dont forget Copperhead, Cipollina's band from the early 70's, great stuff, and as far as Quicksilver. start with Happy Trails. They don't make em like that anymore.

played the cafeteria at my college. I think I bought the album the next day. (In those days, the merch machine was not what it now is...)

At least performance-wise. My '91 wishlist is to see the following get the official release treatment... 4/1/91 4/28/91 6/9/91 6/16-17/91 6/22/91 (fantastic show!) 6/24-25/91 and pretty much every and any show from September, October and December....especially 9/26/91 and 10/31/91. There are so many great performances from '91. Really can't go wrong with most.

Who's playing the 3rd guitar on the 79 selection? The Round and Round is surprisingly good.

3rd show of three. Rare stand in the "Vince and Bruce era" with only Vince on keyboards. Great jam out of Trucking - it gets a little Spanish somewhere in there - and Terrapin, so sweet. Night 2 many of us below the right stacks were possessed by wild dogs - coyotes and wolves: howling away!! Fun shows.

Out of all the sit in guitarists I've heard, he definitely sounds the most familiar with the material - he seems to know all the changes in Black Peter, which has some interesting twists in the bridge part - and he's right there the whole time... I'll look into some of his music...any suggestions?

I dunno if Steve Keyser is still online here, but he's on Facebook and is the keeper of the legacy in many ways. Including a video, if I recall correctly. And hey, you can start with the Quicksilver Messenger Service albums. Then there are the Dinosaurs. Also Thunder and Lightning, with Nick Gravenites. You too can revisit my misspent youth; I'm sure it's all online somewhere!

All our misspent youth is here, somewhere... Cippolina and Quicksilver were overshadowed and way underrated.... Happy Valentine's Day hippies....
