Not long ago, as part of the Bill Graham museum exhibition (soon to appear in Skokie), I heard a great presentation from Danny Scher of BGP about how it came to be and the thought that went into it. At the time, it was pointed out how much Bill was thinking of Dead shows in the design--where else are there foot baths in the restrooms? But having come up in the smaller venues, I share Hamal's view quite a bit.

Dislike of Snoreline for Double T
Too big, the lawn is too far away, getting in and out of the venue and parking lot was always a hassle...We all got preferences. I preferred the smaller venues like the Greek and Frost.

What was not to like about the venue? I only saw '98 Other Ones no Dead. But loved it, for a huge venue had a lot going for it.

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1976, 1985 and 1989, from the east coast, the Midwest, and the west coast.

Our first selection this week is from 6/18/76, the middle night of a three night run in Passaic, NJ, on the Dead’s comeback tour of small theatres, featuring first set music: The Music Never Stopped ; Sugaree, Mama Tried, Crazy Fingers, Big River, Brown Eyed Women.

Next is the end of the show from 6/21/85 at Alpine Valley, where we have Space > Truckin' > Black Peter > Around And Around > Sugar Magnolia, Baby Blue.

Lastly this week is the start of the second set from 6/19/89 at Shoreline, the middle night of a three night run: China Cat Sunflower ; I Know You Rider ; Playing In The Band ; Crazy Fingers ; Playing In The Band Reprise. The next show, on 6/21, was broadcast nationwide on pay-per-view, which I’d always wished the Dead had done more of.

Be sure to join us next week for more music from the vault.

I say this a lot......this show NEEDS to be released. The whole run would make a nice DVD/CD set.

Listening to this selection makes me regret that I skipped so many shows at Shoreline. I only saw 2 in 88 and 1 in 89, and then not again until 94. I really never liked the venue, but they played some great shows there as evidenced here and on the View From the Vault release.

this was my first 3 day run of shows, big sister bought my tix for my hs graduation present. first night was awesome. the second night, i smoked some killer norcal herb for the first time, and it literally knocked me on my ass. i fell down onto that gnarley gravelled parking lot ground and managed to smack my chin so hard i had to go to a local medical facility to have my chin cleaned up, gravel pieces extracted, bandaged and bruised, my sister and i made it back to the venue in time to catch the first set birdsong and second set. missed my first Frank's tower, but the scars and memories live on..
