The Grateful Dead’s strategy in the northeast was on the band’s collective mind from their first serious trips out of the Bay Area. When Sam Cutler came on board, the band upped their east coast gigging even more, topics we discussed extensively in our Skull and Roses season, including episodes with extended segments on the February 1971 shows at the Capitol in Port Chester, the April 1971 shows at the Fillmore East, plus a bonus Fillmore East Late Show, a touring strategy that culminated in the massive Watkins Glen Summer Jam in 1973 (part 1, part 2). The 1980 Radio City gigs got a spotlight in Dead Behind/Dead Ahead, and we hung out a bunch at Madison Square Garden during our In and Out of the Garden episodes about 1981, 1982, and 1983.
