    Grateful Dead Hour no. 1103

    Week of November 9, 2009

First of two programs featuring the second set of 9/10/91, later released on the boxed set 30 Trips Around the Sun. This hour also includes a track from the live album Let It Rock by the Jerry Garcia Band. Recorded in 1975, this ensemble featured the wonderful piano work of Nicky Hopkins.

If you’re not familiar with Hopkins’ work, take a look at Julian Dawson’s biography, And on Piano… Nicky Hopkins. He played with all the major English rock acts of the ‘60s, most notably the Rolling Stones, and then came to California to play with the Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and (for a short time) the first edition of the Jerry Garcia Band.

P.S. I had the great privilege of writing the liner notes for Let It Rock, which included a rare interview with drummer Ron Tutt.

    Enjoy!
