Featured: Part 1 of a great set from the summer of 1969, plus a taste of a new tribute CD.
Of particular note in this program is “Hard to Handle,” which features Jerry Garcia on pedal steel. He played slide guitar on this song a few times, and pedal steel at least this one time, but eventually he settled on playing plain ‘ol’ electric guitar - to great effect! Compare and contrast with the legend 8/6/71 performance at the Hollywood Palladium: an audience recording appears on Phil Lesh’s wonderful compilation Fallout from the Phil Zone.
Also noteworthy is an early, somewhat unformed reading of “Casey Jones.”
Enjoy!!
