Week of April 14-20, 2025
Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1971, 1982, and 1987.
Our first stop this week is opening night of the Dead’s two night run at Berkeley Community Theatre on 8/14/71, where we have the second set: Truckin' > Drums > The Other One; Me And Bobby McGee; Sugar Magnolia; Not Fade Away > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > Not Fade Away, Johnny B Goode, Uncle John’s Band.
Next is the start of the show on 8/10/82 in Iowa, when the Dead were ending their summer tour of 1982 with an excellent show: Feel Like A Stranger; Friend Of The Devil; New Minglewood Blues; Tennessee Jed; Cassidy.
Lastly this week is the first set from the Dead’s final show at Red Rocks on 8/13/87, where we have Big Boss Man; Jack Straw; Row Jimmy; It's All Over Now ; Loser; Cassidy; Far From Me ; Box Of Rain. A wonderful and unique ending to the first set, in which all four singers sing lead on a song to end the set.
Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

Well, it sounds a little better than the 8-12-87 over on the Jam-O-Week but still very hollow like an aud. Think I'll just mosey on over to the To-hell-you-ride shows the 15th & 16th. I have a good set of tapes likely sourced from the remastered KOTO radio broadcasts. Their signal reaches a high spot between Ridgway and Telluride that I have enjoyed hearing some Bluegrass Festival sets from while on my way home from work. I remember a Jerry Douglas set I just had to stop for and listen to many years ago on the commute. Nice parking area at a scenic overlook where you can see a lot of Ralph Lauren's 17,000 acre ranch. Late for dinner but it was more than worth it, lol.
Cheers
really enjoy the Sunshine…

When I click to play on iMac it automatically starts to download a WAV file. So yeah now I've got Set 1 :). Plays like it should on an iPhone.
1stShow - spring into summer '87 is when Healy was first experimenting with his Ultramatrix and it seems really hit or miss, which is a crying shame from my personal perspective (ha) cause I saw a bunch of shows in that time frame, including this one. I mean, the entire June Alpine run is MIA evidently because it got fubared. On the other hand, an example of a really fine pull is the Ultramatrix from late in this tour at Park City 8/20/87. Haven't listened to the Telluride shows in ages. Having a local FM broadcast source is real bonus given the time frame. On a slightly different note one thing I've noticed with some Tapers Section uploads is that they can be very low on the overall volume - immediately obvious when I'm listening in-ear as I can't bring them up to a proper level for my taste and I know detail is lost. This is one of those uploads, which is why I finally allowed the WAV file to download so I could listen through Senns and the DAC in the headphone amp. That really helps for me listening to this set though the audience component is def dialed up too high for my taste - as much an audience as a SBD which is sort of a problem for me given everything. Part of the dryness I think is simply that that was how the PA sounded for these shows. We were second row Night 1 of this run and one thing that strikes me listening now to Night 3 is the distinct, in my bones, sense of "this is Red Rocks '87" in my sonic memory.
Thanks BC
That helps explain the sound quality. I think I remember that Park City '87 cut from a Taper's or Jam-O-Week being very good indeed. I was picturing myself there with the accompanying story someone added (you?). Would have been a great ski area two-fer after Telluride. Another missed opportunity alas.
Finishing up the other two on this Taper's on a snow day here. This '82 is awful nice (corn fed fillies, lol). Killer TOO on the '71. Then likely on to your suggestion over on What...Now, the R.T. vol. 2 num. 3, Wall of Sound 6-16-74 seems a tasty choice.
Cheers
