I just want to thank you, David, for the many enjoyable hours I´ve spent in the Taper´s Section over the years. I´m grateful, to say the least! Bless your work. Love The Dead.

For sure I would expect more from this show. Most likely this pieceBig Railroad Blues The Music Never Stopped (very nice) Don't Ease Me In -- I can't remember who is on the tape in between sets. But I think it's James Brown clip Touch of Grey Estimated > Eyes

    ...so more
Well, now I have managed to listen to a bit of the City Island show, and it confirms my memory! Jerry sounds, quite frankly, awful! Vocals out of tune, and worse still, out of time. He gets the chords wrong on Alabama, his phrase structure, usually his great strength, is ragged, he sounds totally wasted, and not in a good sense! I know, I am gonna be called a hater, ragged on, whatever, but this sure sounds like an off-night, by any standards, to me!

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music spanning 15 years of Grateful Dead history.

Our first selection is from 11/7/69 from the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, featuring Next Time You See Me, High Time, Good Lovin', China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider. There's a cut in the master reel (reel change, actually) during High Times, but otherwise this sounds pretty darn good. The next night, of course, was released as Dick's Picks Vol. 16

From four years later on 9/7/73 at Nassau Coliseum, we have the end of the first set, featuring Row Jimmy ; Looks Like Rain ; Deal ; El Paso ; Bird Song ; Playing In The Band. It's always the sign of a great show from this era when the first set featured both of the big first set jamming songs (Bird Song and Playing).

Lastly this week, from City Island in Harrisburg, PA on 6/23/84, we have the start of the first set featuring Alabama Getaway > The Promised Land ; Peggy-O ; Little Red Rooster ; Brown Eyed Women ; My Brother Esau. There were quite a few really good shows on the summer tour of 1984, running right through the Ventura shows later in July.

Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes from the vault.

....to have, in particular, this '73 Birdsong in such great sound, cheers! I must say, the two shows at City Island were, as a group, I think the WORST I ever saw at one venue! I am not making any general comments about early vs. middle, vs. late Dead, the place had very bad karma (just down river from Six Mile Island and the near melt-down), bad sound, bad shows, just kinda bad all around. But, hey, maybe others have different memories than I!

Thanks for the previously unheard 1984 soundboard. Based on trend, we'll hear more of this in the coming weeks in either the Jam of the Week or Taper's Section. Either one would be most welcome. Something about this makes me long for bike trips in the Black River State Forest. Can't wait! Thanks again Dead.net.

No, grateful prof, your memory is good. Saw some smokin' shows in '83 and '84 (Hampton and Merriweather come to mind) but City Island was sub-par both times. Sucks, because it was my backyard.

i loved some of 84. but my criteria for most all shows was i needed phil!!! listen to richmond 84. phil's booming! and when phil's 6-string bass was booming, there is NOTHING from the 70's that can touch that sound, even how amazing phil sounds on the recent single 72 release. playin' in the band is like a 20 min phil solo! i loved saratoga 84, too. one of the greek shows from 84, the one that opened with dancin' sounds great to me. thanks david!

...Saratoga shows were great! The first one, '83 was a special night. I recorded the show from under the ampitheather, and Phil was about as loud as I had ever heard him, he exploded the place during the Dew. Sounded far less impressive in the balcony, or under the stars (which had its own charms). LOST MY MASTER RECORDING as the years rolled by, dam! The second set was extra long, I remember moving to a second tape, while the other tapers hoped to fit it all in on one, and being very happy that I did when the fired up Throwing Stones after the Dew...Good times, miss them!

Sorry to hear that you lost your '83 SPAC Master. That's gotta hurt. My sympathy.Man, what a night it was! How we ever made it across Vt and back into NH I just don't know... Saw and recorded nearly all of Summer '84. It is Kansas City 7/3/84 that I always come back to. Just one of those nights with a crackling vibe leading up to, during, and after the performance. Pristine AUD Master that night!(See Day one: Nov.1st 2015 30 days of Dead). Alpine Valley July 6,7,1984 ain't too bad either, but tired and road worn by then. Merci beaucoup Monsieur Lemieux shwack in nh

I just watched the Leafs lose their last game at the coliseum tonight, which is fitting as they have a very poor record there....or anywhere for that matter. Oh well...at least they announced they're gonna blow up the team. On a side note, I always felt that they should have had a banner commemorating the spring 90 shows the Dead played there.

.....I did not find my car until the next morning (just a bit after I found my mind), you might say I was a bit "altered", a good thing I did not find it and try to drive I think!
