Week of February 9-15, 2026

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1971, 1972, and 1973, all within a couple of calendar dates of one another.

Our first stop is on 10/22/71 in Chicago on Keith’s first tour with the Grateful Dead, where we have Ramble On Rose ; Cumberland Blues ; Cryptical Envelopment > Drums > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment.

Next is a huge second set jam from 10/24/72 in Milwaukee, where we have Truckin’> Drums> The Other One> He's Gone > The Other One.

Lastly this week is a similar second set jam from a year later on 10/23/73 in Bloomington, MN, where we have Truckin’ > Nobody's Fault But Mine Jam> The Other One> Drums> Jam > Weather Report Suite.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

Phil was leading the way in the 72 jam, Jerry seemed to have backed off from wherever it was going. So many on and off ramps in "TOO" jams. It might be just my imagination but I sometimes hear Jerry teasing with the notes from the song People, from Funny Girl. 72 and 73 both have it, whatever it is. It's not a note for note sound. More like Jerry putting the notes in just the right place while Phil, Keith and Bill get lost in the Avante Garde jazz jam. Bobby hits the notes that make the Jam whole as if it were written out as opposed to " Lets Jam" and see where we end up. The 73 show has, I think, the house organ in the mix. Not sure where I read that or if that was this show. I can picture the stage crew comenderring the Wurlitzer. It's our now! Good Ole Grateful Dead for sure.

Doing OK and best to you.
Think I'll dive into these fine cuts today. Just a dreary cold day out there anyway. Looks like this 1st one is from DaP 3. Did Austin R.T. 11-15-71 recently. Should pair well with that.
Cheers

OMFG - really and truly
-
The 2 Brew Town Fall 72 shows right after Vandy and the equipment theft.
-
and now 10/23/73 Bloomington and sure enough that does sound like Keith is playing the "House Organ" at times. FTR - straight up killer Fall '73.

I went to IA and found a Charlie Miller upload. The reviews are mostly from those at the show. This reviewer " Reviewer: duckpond74 - - November 30, 2010
Subject: a little history here ." Gives a good blow by blow, literally Bill getting stomped by the security guards. And a bit about Keith and the crew and the Wurlitzer . Seems like the Beer Tour had some crazy moments right down to Jerry and Phil just sitting down on the stage. All rave of Keith killing the Let it Grow. Got me some listening to redo. and rereading. Glad this weeks Tapers is being enjoyed by all the names I see at 30 dod. Best website on the net. Great folks to chat with. Enjoy yourselves it's later than you think. .

10-24-72 TOO is certainly an enthusiastic hard charger. Surprised Bob didn't break strings in there. Sound is incredibly clear even on my crappy computer especially compared to the '71 offering. And they didn't even list that cool Philo-style Jam and trippy Space in there.
Cheers
This week is a fun exercise in TOO comparisons.

1stshow78 Wants to know. Toooo Funny. Congratulations my friend. Your posts are the best. And Thanx Dave and Co. on the Bobby Birthday week. Saw the Hartford show and St Pete. Seems like yesterday. Hard to write a review on the 80's shows after diving into the TOO Sandwich. I took your advice. Dove deeper. I found a TOO into Sitting on Top of the World back into TOO. Only the Dead can Trip that song out. Best I can say for the mid 80's show is when we walked out most were pleased. Some folks never figured out the Dead had to change or they would have gone nuts. Again thanx Dave for throwing the Memphis Blues in. Incredible lyrics that hit home when the band is firing on all cylinders. Peace all. cYa!~
