gorgeous early Eyes -> China Doll
David,Thanks for the prodigious helpings of delicious Dead this week! I've only listened to the first selection from '73, and I gotta say that this early Eyes of the World -> China Doll is a monster. Just so beautiful and mature and such an early stage.

    Vince
Vince did seem to have the jitters at the start of Cold Rain & Snow, but he warmed up quick. Jerry introduced him to those of us in the Richfield crowd after the wonderful Bird Song. Great 2nd set too, with China > Rider leading off. RIP Vince, who left us in 2006. Terrific Dark Star > Eyes > China doll from Champaign: Those '73-'74 Eyes of the World jams were incredible.

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll dig into some music from 1973, 1988 and 1990.

We'll first stop in to the great show on 2/22/73 in Champaign-Urbana, IL, with the big second set sequence of Dark Star>Eyes Of The World>China Doll. Those last two songs were then brand-new, less than two weeks old, and would appear on Wake Of The Flood and Mars Hotel, respectively.

In 1988, the Dead played a three night run in Oakland to celebrate New Year's Eve, and today we're going to check out some music from the second show on 12/29/88, a very good show. The second set was also really tight, so we'll try to get some of that onto the Tapers' Section soon. Until then, here's the entire first set: Hell In A Bucket>Sugaree, New Minglewood Blues, Friend Of The Devil, Queen Jane Approximately, To Lay Me Down, Let It Grow.

We'll now play another entire first set, this one with added historical significance, as it's the first set Vince Welnick ever played with the Grateful Dead, on 9/7/90 in Richfield, Ohio: Cold Rain & Snow > Walkin' Blues ; Ramble On Rose ; Me And My Uncle > Big River ; Althea ; When I Paint My Masterpiece ; Bird Song ; Picasso Moon ; U.S. Blues. I attended these shows in Richfield, and as much as we all missed Brent, there was a new energy in the building, with all of us witnessing the birth of the last phase of the Grateful Dead.

Be sure to join us next week for more tunes from the vault.

of the last phase of the Grateful Dead. Kind of says it all.(Jerry introduces Vince before Birdsong) It should be noted that Vince Welnick really had no choice but to take the job offered by Jerry & the boys (I know, tough choice in any case). The IRS was breathing down his neck for unpaid royalties for Tubes unit sales and associated royalties. Who could have predicted that "9 Lives" Jerry would continue to long along that black, muddy river for another 58 months?

Remarkable how Feb 22 '73's inconsequential Dark Star-middle jam is abandoned in favor of the turn to Eyes of the World, which is such more exciting music in this performance, with the band at it so energetically. (I imagine the charge in the audience at this new music from 'em.) And noteworthy, at Vince's first show (and first following Brent's dying), their casual and calm competency in this first set. (But Phil's nearly unnoticeable in this recording, and it lacks much of the drums' energy, so sh*tcan any idea of releasing this commercially, if it's the only official source recording.)

If there are potentially releasable shows with Vince in the latter part of 1990, I would go with the second night of Compton Terrace from December later that year, any/and/or all three McNichols shows and/or the New Years akland run. If there is any thought about releasing "something" from Richfield, the Fall 1991 shows were, by and far the best they performed there. I would buy a Richfield box from 9/4-6/91withouit hesitation. I might even buy more than one, because these are good shows to turn people onto the Dead who may not be as familiar with them. Solid, inspired performances all around, and in my opinion, as good as anything from any other year, including the status quo years of '73 - '77. I love the Grateful Dead as much as anyone else, if not more. tptb shouldn't ever be afraid to step outside of the box more often. The Spring '90 Box was a step in the right direction, as was Road Trips: Vol 4, Number 2: April Fool's '88.
