    Boston Garden '94
I was at the Boston Garden show and it was one of my favorite shows to have attended; awesome Help > Slip >Franklin's opener; probably one of the best So Many Roads I've heard sung, Jerry pours his heart and soul into it, check out the intensity as it gets toward the end. Second set was no slouch either, with a great Scarlet>Fire and Terrapin.

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music from 1978, 1989 and 1994.

Our first selection is the start of the second set from 2/4/78 in Milwaukee, a very good show sandwiched between two great shows in Mdison and Cedar Falls. From Milwaukee, we have Samson And Delilah ; Dupree's Diamond Blues,; Dancing In The Street > Terrapin Station> Playing In The Band.

Next up is the end of the first set from 2/7/89 at the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, featuring a couple of brand new songs to start things off. Just A Little Light, Standing On The Moon ; Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again ; Bird Song. The lyric for Just A Little Light included the line “it could be just another mule deer…” before it was changed to “whitetail” later in 1989. As an east coast native, I'm partial to whitetail deer, so I was happy with the change.

Our last selection is from 10/1/94 in Boston, featuring the entire first set, Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; Walkin' Blues; Althea; Me And My Uncle > Big River; Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues ; So Many Roads ; The Promised Land. The DAT source from which this came has a little bit of digital noise, but rest assured the vault master DAT is in great shape.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

It looks like this is the Dupree's Diamond Blues that graces the 'hybrid' first set featured on disc 1 of Dick's Picks 18. In addition, the Playing in the Band featured here is the second performed by the Dead in 2 days! The performance from 2/3 appears on disc 2 of the set. It's also interesting to note that there is no mention in the liner notes of the 2 songs that are culled from the 2/4 Milwaukee show.

on the wikipedia page for DP18 it mentions 2 songs from 2.4.78 being used. I would imagine this show will get released at some point. It seems to be the the recordings for this show are in the vault. It is strange they did not note that material from 2.4.78 was used. Dicks Picks 28 has a few patches. That may have not been noted in the liner notes either. One during Eyes and the other during Morning Dew.

Dave's notes suggest he considers this is 'a very good show sandwiched between two great shows'. Unless we move down a tier from Dave's current wont to pick 'great shows that sound great', I don't think we'll be getting this one anytime soon. Maybe in ten or fifteen years. It's cool now and then to hear the soundboard, especially since it's not on the archive. In addition, it's pretty common knowledge 'It's All Over Now' from the first set is the other tune from 2/4/78 that graces the 'hybrid first set' that comprises Dick's Picks 18 disc one. Since it isn't part of this week's offering, I wasn't commenting on it. As an aside, I tend to frequent www.deaddisc.com for all my Grateful Dead oeuvre inquiries and the Taper's Section Index is great, too. I hate to bother LIA, but he hasn't updated it in a couple years...

okay, clearly this EPIC show is more than on Dave's radar...the FANTASTIC 1st set presented here was a Jam of the Week less than a year ago as was the TREMENDOUS pre-drumz of Set: 2... Fall of 1994 had a bunch of awesome moments, especially during the MSG run (Dupree's breakout on 10.13, MONSTER Scarlet>Fire on 10.14, Rainy Day Women encore w/Dylan on 10.17 to name a few) but there were 2 KILLER SHOWS, 10.1 & 10.5, that need more recognition... Set:2 of 9.29.94 is another severely underrated set of GD (super-slow, absolutely awesome Eyes!) and an honorable mention to Set:2 of 10.3 as well (UNREAL setlist!!) but 10.1.94 was a blast, this will be officially released one day... oh yes, it will be... 'without love in the dream it'll never come true...' ♤

Great show in Wisconsin. I like 'Samson And Delilah' and 'Terrapin Station.' Bob Weir's rendition of Dylan's 'Memphis Blues' is very good from 1989 Oakland Convention Center. Just can't keep from humming and snapping my fingers as I listen to 1994 set at old Boston Garden. There's 'Franklin's Tower,' 'Walkin' Blues,' 'Althea,' 'Me And My Uncle,' 'Big River...' WOW! "I'm gonna sit right here until I die..." >Ramblin Bob
